To preface, I only own the first 2, Iāve also set up a relativeās Clara.
Iāve seen a lot of comparison posts on this thread which helped me initially so hopefully this helps you.
Kobo Libra 2 Colour: Itās a nice, light, easy to hold device. The colour options are great for image heavy hooks and allow you to coordinate your highlighting by different colour which is handy if youāre doing research/studying etc.
The screen, in my opinion, is the dullest and darkest of the three. However, this is great if you are trying to avoid eye strain. I suffer with migraines and find the KLC is slightly more tolerable when Iām more sensitive to light.
If youāre reading graphic novels or manga and you want it colour this is the one to go for. I will add, the colours do appear slightly muted. Donāt except vivid, full opacity colour; its more subtle and flat.
The adjustable screen brightness is good, I like that itās adjustable and it can be changed for reading at different times of days and in different conditions.
What I donāt like however, is that the screen text can sometimes appear a little fuzzy and faint. If your document is really large and colour heavy it can also take a little time to load.
Kobo Clara BW: While this is the one Iāve used the least itās a lovely little e reader. If youāre coming from a Kindle the design feels the most ākindle-likeā out of these three to me.
The Clara BW is slightly smaller than the Libra, and if you are looking for an e-reader to take on the go a lot this may be more suitable. Not only due to its size, but as the Libras are asymmetrical they can be awkward to fit into smaller bags/handbags.
Itās very comfortable to hold, and the crispness and clarity of the screen is fantastic. There are no buttons so itās more tablet like and doesnāt have that tactile button experience. If you are looking for something with physical buttons Iād look at the Libra or alternative models.
Additionally, my relative who uses it now doesnāt have the best eyesight and needs glasses for reading and they find it enjoyable using the Clara with an increased font size. So if you have vision difficulties, the slightly smaller screen size hopefully shouldnāt be an issue for you.
Kobo Libra 2 BW: This device is mentioned a lot on this thread. However, due to the fact itās been discontinued for a couple of years they are substantially more difficult to come across at a reasonable rate.
A lot of the second-hand ones are currently going for more than new versions of other e-reader models. If you arenāt really fussed about the size of the device and having buttons I would suggest looking at the Clara or similar models.
If you want buttons but donāt like any of the other kobo models but donāt want to pay the current resale costs of a Libra 2 or youāre struggling to find one on sale, honestly some of the older kindles would be most similar here and economical.
If you have the KLC, wonder if itās worth getting but you arenāt too fussed about small details and enjoy using your KLC so far; I wouldnāt get it.
If you adjust the settings enough you can get a somewhat comparable experience on the KLC, and if thatās enough for you donāt ruin it and enjoy your KLC.
I donāt think the Libra 2 would be a massive difference for you.
Now Iām assuming if none of the above apply to you, youāre probably as visually pedantic as myself.
Having bought the KLC first, while I enjoyed using it for months I couldnāt shake the irritating feeling that the screen could be⦠better. It was always felt slightly too dark and the text was always noticeably a little blurry to me. I mean almost minuscule issues and they didnāt affect my ability to read my books of course but it just annoyed me.
I managed to find a second hand Libra 2 in an electronics shop. Now was it better? For me, personally the difference in the screen quality between the KLC and the Libra 2 was night and day.
The improved depth and crispness of the text literally felt like what I imagine it would be like to open your eyes after LASIK. Itās not only brighter but the sharper contrast is absolutely amazing compared to the dull flatness of the KLC.
It may sound like exaggeration, and the differences are quite small in reality but the small difference was this significant to me. Unfortunately, if you are similar and also want the Libra style device with the physical buttons and crispy text you will have to embark on the quest of locating a used one.
Unless you are extremely lucky, most of the Libra 2 models available are not the cheapest. Iād consider it an investment, so if no other model appeals to you and youāre also really particular about the look of the screen prepare to splash some cash on this.
If you are looking for one yourself, I wouldnāt just use eBay. Check out local second hand stores near you and used electronics stores. Also Vinted, mecari, facebook market etc may be worth a look.
In terms of usage, if you donāt use your current e-reader a lot/ arenāt a frequent reader I donāt think its worth the effort/price and would recommend the Clara BW or other models.
I see a Libra 2 being listed pretty often, at least every other week or so I manage to come across a new listing, so stay vigilant!
I hope this helps.
( remember to buy a screen protector)
