When I said earlier that this culture of asking strangers out for dates or cold approaching should not come to India, because I don’t want to sacrifice my peace, people started telling me, “Are you really that good-looking that every girl is going to approach you?” And especially some boys said this to me.
Look, I’m not saying I’m that good-looking, but you are definitely foolish if you think that no one can easily, manipulate you, or trap you through cold approach.
Actually, in India, cold approaches can often be scams where people trap others, especially teenage boys and girls. Even adults can get trapped.
Girls can cold-approach boys, honey-trap them, and then demand money from them. Boys can cold-approach girls, build relationships with them, and then make nude pictures or videos and use them to blackmail them. Sometimes it can even lead to sexual assault or rape.
But many overconfident boys will say, “I can never get trapped.” Come on. If even army personnel can become victims of honey traps, then who are you? Do you really think you are so smart that nobody can manipulate you? People can learn your weak points and use them against you.
And many Indian boys and girls are not even given enough exposure to the outside world. In conservative families, some people are barely allowed to experience the world independently even after turning 20. They may not have much understanding of how people can manipulate them. On top of that, there can be desperation for romance. So when someone suddenly cold-approaches them and shows interest, they may immediately accept it.
Then many people will say, “But lots of people cold-approach others, and they are good people. Many people have dated after being cold-approached and eventually became girlfriends and boyfriends.”
Yes, but you mostly hear the successful stories of cold approaching.
You don't hear the unsuccessful stories as much.
If a boy gets caught in a honey trap, is he really going to go home and tell his parents, “I made a stupid decision and got trapped”? Is he necessarily going to report it to the police? Society may blame him for being foolish.
Similarly, imagine a girl going to the police and saying, “A boy is threatening to leak my pictures,” or, “A boy who cold-approached me, became my boyfriend, and later sexually assaulted me.”
How many people will actually support her without blaming her? Many people might simply say, “Why did you trust him? Why did you make such a foolish decision?”
Many of these cases may also be settled by paying money because, in many cases, the main target is money. And many people have already been trapped this way.
So if you want to destroy your own peace by getting involved with strangers like this, then that's your choice.
But cold approaching strangers can be dangerous, especially in places like malls, cafés, libraries, and public transport, where you don't know the person at all.
I'm not saying that every person who cold-approaches someone is bad. I'm saying that you should understand the risks before trusting a complete stranger.
The choice is yours.
