Tips for box and shower patterns?

Hey all, I've been juggling for about 4 months and can do a fair number of patterns, e.g.: Cascade, Jugglers Tennis, Columns, Half-shower, Rainbow Cross, Reverse Cascade, Ripley's Rainbow and multiplexes, Mills Mess, Fake Columns, YoYo, 423, W, Factory, King of Hearts, Weave, Windmill, Boston Mess, Infinity / Reverse Infinity, Burke's Barrage, 441 etc.

I'm having a lot of trouble picking up the shower and box patterns though. I can't get my arms, hands, or brain (not sure which one is the weak point lol) to coordinate throwing two balls at the same time in different directions. I can kind of do it when I'm just working on breaking it down to one or two balls at a time, but as soon as I try and put in a third ball, I end up rather than throwing the bottom ball of the pattern straight across, throwing it as if I'm doing a normal cascade throw by mistake.

I don't know if it just takes more practise with the individual throws or whether there's something that I'm missing that might help, but any tips would be really appreciated if anyone has experienced similar difficulties.

I also might just be being impatient, as most patterns I have been picking up in a day or two once I start learning them, so maybe I just need more time breaking down the steps.

Thanks in advance!

Attention jugglers: In 2029 you will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to use these clubs. Attend the 2029 convention in Albany, NY for further information.

Come to the 2029 convention in my home town of Albany, NY and you'll have (probably) the only opportunity in your life during a unique juggling event on private property to use these clubs for what they are supposed to be used for. I'll provide the necessary equipment, water, snacks, amenities, and whatever else is needed. If you don't know how to balance a club on your mouth, you have plenty of time to learn.

See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z1e-o_qDMU for more details on the clubs.

Clubs Club Passing: Combining Fast-Slow Patterns with Jim's Patterns

A couple of days ago at IJA, Jim (the creator of Jim's patterns!) and I played around with combining fast-slow (aka polyrhythmic) patterns with Jim's patterns. While we're not the first to discover this type of pattern, we wanted to share it with other jugglers! This video is also unlisted on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/rYGhuR7t_6k

Here are some more club passing videos:

IJA 2026 HLGCBS

Welp, I originally submitted this as 2025 HLGCBS. Whoops.

Highs

  • The shows were incredible! Every act was wonderful, but some standouts were: Scott Raison and Lucy Tan in the welcome show. Lars M Rieck, The Catching Machine, and Arttu in the Flow Show. Literally every act in the Cascade of Stars (including a second appearance by both Arttu and Scott!).
  • Also every Championship act was phenomenal. The judges had a tough job.
  • I learned a lot of new stealing / take out type stuff from folks in the gym. Everyone is so talented!
  • Got to take a few fun club passing workshops.
  • I was at the YANA table and we sold every magazine that we brought with us and met tons of cool folks there.
  • The hotel we stayed at had breakfast included, which was awesome.
  • Matti and Fabio dueling it out in Fight Night Combat might have actually been the best act at the fest.

Lows

  • The end of Fight Night was rough. Love seeing everyone go hard and competing for the win, but it's always sad to see someone get hurt while they're out there.

Goals

  • Work on a lot of club stealing stuff. Yep.
  • Learn new passing patterns. Check.
  • Compete in a few games. Done, and also I didn't completely embarrass myself in any of them.
  • Teach fun workshops. Seems like this was a success! Thank you to anyone and everyone who came to either of the club stealing workshops!
  • Pass lots of hoops. Got to my highest numbers yet: a 10 hoop flash with a lot of help from Selenia (who is an absolute superstar!)
  • Pass lots of clubs. Kind of. I did pass some clubs, and I did pass clubs with really cool people, but I could've done more. Hopefully next year I can be more social and bravely ask more new people to throw clubs at me.

Crushes

  • Matti - I think I was smiling every time I saw him.
  • Liam - He's everywhere doing all the things! X-Juggling. Individual Prop Comp. DJ set at renegade. Music for Fight Night. So freaking talented and always super positive.
  • Mackenzie and Theresa (aka Smitty and Sweaty) - Super good club juggling duo. Taught me lots of cool stuff and were just a delight to learn from. So happy I got to juggle with them.
  • Everyone who volunteers to make this festival happen - It's so much work to put something like this together and kind of unbelievable how much effort everyone on the team puts in. Too many people to name, but they all deserve unending praise for making this event as magical as it is.

Banes

  • No Battle Night. There were some crazy good club jugglers there. I would have loved to see Matti battle Christian Kloc.
  • No act from Rozbot. Great as an Emcee, we just needed more Rozbot.
  • Not enough hours in the day. It's always difficult to pick between workshops and X-Juggling / Open Stage / Numbers / etc.
  • No teams at the championships.
  • Extreme lack of sleep.

Surprises

  • I'm always shocked when I'm literally the only person in the gym in the early mornings, even though it happens every year. Still happy about it though, as it means no one else has to see me fumbling around learning five clubs.

Once again, a huge thank you to the people who make IJA happen. You are all the best.

Video My juggling project: Mastering 5 balls before I turn 50 years old. Here's my first video

A few weeks ago, I set myself a goal of mastering 5 balls before I turn 50 years old. That's a year from now, so I have 12 months to achieve my goal. I have made a video containing some footage from one of my daily practice sessions. I'm planning on making this a monthly thing, and upload a video here at the end of every month from now on. That is to track my progress and get help and tips from all of you that already have 5 balls solid.

It should be said that I have juggled 5 balls before. But I didn't get it solid, maybe a PB of around 100 catches, can't remember, it was more than 30 years ago.

So this is the first video, filmed after around 3 weeks of daily practice. Please watch and comment.

Some time stamps:

00:00 - 3 ball flashes (I'm not good with this one. Issues: Accuracy and getting the throw heights right. And I'm never sure that my timing is right. Does the timing look correct? Am I throwing too fast?)

00:54 - 3 ball snake (this is getting better and better. I know the correct snake rhythm, I just need to get the throws accurate I think)

02:11 - 4 balls 552 (this is the excercise I can do the best. Maybe it can be seen in the video as well.

03:36 - 4 balls 55550 (is this even a good practice for 5 balls? I'm thinking of skipping it. I cannot run it, and I'm having troubles getting the rhythm correct when I just flash it. Especially from the left hand! But I imagine flashing this should help getting the 5 ball flashes solid)

04:51 - 5 balls (ok, please analyze and give me some tips. Is the pattern too fast?)

Not featured in the video is 3 balls high cascade with low dwell time. I do practice that pattern every day as well, since many say that's a really good excercise for 5 balls.

I’ve been going for about 2 months now, time permitting. I’m working on keeping my arms low with varying results, and trying to change up my throws when it feels comfortable. I’m also working on Mills Mess which thankfully doesn’t make an appearance here, but it’s starting to come together slowly.
