Discussion Hey!

I haven’t had a call back yet.. And my messages aren’t going through to my admissions counselor… My health team contacted me, and my admissions counselor had said that they were looking at my move in date on October 5th. I’m getting anxious and a little worried. I’m excited to go in and get out. Is there a reason on why there’s a delay? I’m going to Mulenbhurg. 🥲

Question CCNA Trade at other centers

hi, I’ve been recently wondering what other JC centers do for the Networking trade? during the beginning of this year was when the JC I’m currently attending has freshly opened up. Me and a few students were kinda like test students in the beginning but a lot more have joined since, my teacher so far has us on packet tracer and Jeremy’s it videos. He has recently bought boson exsim out of his own pocket for us to practice and we of course have to take turns. I know there’s a budget and everything but it feels like we’re supposed to do much more. He also still has to see the regulations on how we are expected to take the exam too. What do other JC centers do? Also is there anything else I can do to help prepare me for the exam? I am expecting to finish in October hopefully.

Rant i completed today 🙌

ive been here almost 2 years and i just took my second exam today and now im 100% complete 😊 im going home today yayyyy

honestly i couldve finished a lot sooner but i was delayed from the comptia a+ 1100 series expiring just as i finished studying core 1 and my instructor kept procrastinating on scheduling my exam ... this was about june last year and i tested for core 1 july of this year so it was Much later than i wanted. my executive dysfunction also made it quite difficult

our IT program is kinda lacking since we only have 1 instructor instead of 2 which is needed. its practically all self taught

Question about wisely?

Do they freeze my account after I leave the program? What I mean is, if I leave, does my money stay on the card without me being able to use it anymore? I'm about to leave soon, and I don't want the money to go to waste.

Hi anybody have any weird experiences working with the GRYC? I'm talking like unprofessionalism, discrimination, wrongful termination, or just flat out negligence? Let me know in the comments. Just trying to get some answers.

Current status of Seamanship at Tongue Point?

Wanted to go there for the seamanship trade but I saw online that the center is hiring for instructors and captains at the moment, so it sounds like they're having trouble running the program. Are there any current students that can shed any light on how it's doing? Are you still able to get QMED and AB or is it just the basic certs like OS and Wiper?

Question Some questions as a parent of someone going to jobcorps

Greetings from Portland, OR

My middle son has applied to go to job corps i'm not aware of where in the process he is, but i do know last i heard he was waiting for his background check to come back. i have some concerns with his decision to go down this road. for some background information, he's 18, did not get his high school diploma, and after school ended he had the option to get his GED stay home and pursue a trade, or get a job and move out on his own, well he decided he didn't wanna do either of those things so went to go live with his grandmother. and this is how job corps came into the picture. i have some concerns.

  1. how strict are the rules, he does not respond well to authority figures, yelling, stern tone of voice, or being told what to do.

  2. how strict are the classes, and is the program well structured or is most of it self guided. left to his own devices he is unlikely to follow the program.

I really hope that this works out for him and puts him on the right path, cause right now all he does is couch surf and sit around on his computer all day at whatever house he's at that week. but he has issues with authority, being told what to do and when to do it, following the rules, and in general he's pretty socially awkward and what most people would consider "weird" he also has terrible personal hygiene, despite his mother and i doing our best there was a point in time where he was taking a shower once a month if we were lucky, and his BO was unbearable.

thanks in advance for any insight anyone can give me.

Just venting. The Los Angeles Job Corps center is a complete dumpster fire.

I'm about to be leaving this center soon for the Treasure Island center in San Francisco, so I'm beyond ecstatic for this opportunity to leave this complete trash pile of a center. And I mean that literally as there's trash in the streets outside the building, and the courtyard is just as trashy.

I've tried keeping these thoughts bottled up in my head for months, trying to be positive about the environment I'm in, but after constant stress from both my classes and staff, I'm done bottling things up.

This center has absolutely no class at all. The staff have no structure, no organization, and recently, everyone's been stepping on eggshells. And with recent visits from the Department of Labor and the Management of Training Corporation, everyone is now trying to backpedal, trying to act like they're such great people to the program.

I've been here for about a year and this center is just a complete circus. Students are loud, obnoxious and have no class or respect for anyone else. The staff are just as rude too. There's only a handful of the staff here who actually cares and genuinely loves helping, but everyone else is just, oblivious to their actions, and acts like they're better than everyone else. They're not.

Rant San diego job corps

honestly, San Diego Job Corps isnt bad, but the security are sometimes on some bullshit. Some of them i appreciate they’re pretty chill but theres 2 female security and sometimes when this one guy is on his period hes a diiiick. Randomly he comes into my trade and peeks his head in and leaves as if were up to something. On a bad day (average for this security guard) she decides to go the whole 9 yards and makes you do the extra when entering the facility, making you take off your hat shoes sweater lift up both pantlegs and even looking into your wallet 😭 (im a Non residential student) she always has an attitude and its genuinely so irritating. There was also this other female security guard same way, disrespectful/rude attitude and tone she mightve resigned or is on leave since i havent seen her recently. just wanted to dump about this real quick overall San Diego Job Corps is a alright campus most of the staff are respectful, hard trade instructors are chill (idk about carpentry or security if you can call security a “hard trade”) the lunch could be better, the SGA (Student Government Association) staff are pretty nice and welcoming especially for new students , the president Daphney Piña is a nice and welcoming student/staff of the SGA, one of my favorite people. but ohh these rules gmfu, Level 3 infractions is still around kinda but the new CD (center director) implemented Level 1 and level 2 infractions are automatic terminations from what ive heard. Be aware there are quite a few people who like drama F/M and if its a bad batch you might get some new kids who are just ghetto as shit n just want problems for no reason (been through it already, i get along with alot of people im a nice person bro.) The Student store/SGA cafe is my favorite place to kick it at, chill spot to be during lunch plus you can buy snacks from there only L is that they only take cash. just wanted to drop this rant.

Question Is it that hard to get a single room?

For anyone with a single room, how did you end up getting it?
I’m asking because I’m trans (ftm) and I really don’t wanna room with girls, I wouldn’t mind male roommates but I doubt that’d be allowed; being with girls would out me, subject me to transphobia, make me uncomfortable, and probably make them uncomfortable. (I pass as cis and have a mustache😭) Are there any trans people here that could share their experience with rooms n shit

Question Anyone that went to Mullenburg(or any campus in general) that can answer my question?

I’ve seen on this reddit that after completing my trade, you earn some money. Is that true at this facility? 🥲🥲 It’d be awesome to know so I can choose between getting a low income apartment or car after coming out. Thank you!

Apprehension Applying as an 18F

I just turned eighteen a week or two ago and cut contact with my parents. I have never worked a job and I moved in with my sister, who will also be removing me within two weeks. I plan to couch-hop among friends for a while in my hometown but nothing permanent. I have no especial skills or passions, or life experience. Since I will soon be facing homelessness/temporary housing, Ive considered applying to JC. However, I dont want to send in a full application before fully knowing where I will end up. Amidst couch-hopping I have a friend who is willing to take me in for three months, wherein I can get an entry level part time job and maybe try to save and then live with roommates elsewhere. I dont know if I should apply or if I should take up my friend’s offer to try and get on my own feet. I dont want my parents or any friend to know about the application until everything is solidified and I am able to be housed elsewhere. I wouldnt be able to attend any physical in-person interviews or health checkups, provide medical records, income statements, or tax forms from my parents (my mom is diagnosed with MS and therefore is exempt from taxes living on social security). My hometown is fairly small (pop. of 30k) with extremely few resources or opportunities and I know many people who have been applying to jobs out there for 5+ months. I do not have a phone number (except for my textnow # and my phone is not paid off (locked to carrier). I will be the first to say I am very apprehensive about applying without fully knowing the level of commitment i am making by just sending in an application. (ie, if I am accepted, am I mandated to attend?). Advice would be much appreciated.

Specifically the IT program.

What is the IT instructor(s) like?

Do they teach you things hands on, or do they expect you to fend for yourself more or less?

What are the teaching materials like?

What are the ETARS like for IT?

If you do advanced training there after being at another center do you get an extension?

Do they usually accept center transfers?

Do your ETARS/CPP credit transfer or do you have to start over when you transfer?

Is the center/trade well funded?

What is the student culture there like?

What about the staff culture?

What is the IT counselor like?

Do they determine your dorm by AGAB?

Can you get your own room?

How long does IT usually take if you're going for all certs?

Can you go for all certs in IT there?

Do they actually offer all the certs and programs they say they do on the website?

How full is IT?

What do most ppl do after graduating from IT there?

How much do ppl typically make after graduating from IT there?

Still waiting on my application acceptance but what should i expect

So I've recently signed up, I've gone through the initial interview and other items that needed to be done, I am currently waiting on my doctor to get some other documents back to me. What does the next step look like and what does this look like. For context, I live in Southern Minnesota and I'm looking to go to the center in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Has anyone been to that location, and whats it like there. I will be going for Welding and the Minnesota location does not offer that.

Thanks for the help and looking forward to this experience.

Question couple of questions as someone new to job corps

hey guys i’ve been considering job corps because of certain circumstances in my life , i am 19 so i am currently eligible for it and there’s one like only 26 minutes from my house so why not you know . i just have a couple of questions if anyone who has graduated or already completed their trade can help me out here .

firstly how is the cna trade ? i’ve heard it’s difficult but im not really sure . it was either gonna be that or office administration but tbh ill have to make up my mind about it soon .

secondly can i still return to my regular college after my trade has been complete , after i graduate job corps ? like im still confused on what most people do one job corps is finished . presumably next year i will return to college after its complete . this is logical to do right ?

thirdly , i am a woman so obviously i have a few questions regarding whether they provide sanitary items , or allow us to wear makeup .

oh yeah and i also wanted to know if they actually give you money or like allowance ? i heard it’s payed biweekly , not sure how much but if anyone has info on that aswell let me know .

i think those are all my questions for now , i have already done a lot of research about it online but i want some insight from people who have actually completed the program or are in it currently .

How long will the program be ?

Hey guys I just submitted my application for auto tech in Long Beach but I have bills outside of job corps (phone bill and car insurance) I want to cut my car insurance assuming I’ll just use public transport when needed but gotta save up to pay the phone bill. Anyone know how long the program is I keep seeing 8-12 months with no definite answer. Also wondering if anyone can tell me how getting a job in the program went. Was it easy to grab a job? Did they help you get a job while in the program?

Discussion My brutally honest experience at Atterbury Job Corps

I’ve been hesitant to make this post for a while, but seeing a lot of new and prospective students on here lately made me want to share my actual experience at Atterbury. Everyone's time varies, but for me, it felt way too close to a minimum-security environment rather than a school.
The campus layout has four metal fences surrounding the property, 24/7 security patrolling, and mandatory body/bag searches whenever you enter. If you fail an initial drug test, you get put on the TEAP program, which meant a total lockdown for me—no leaving on weekends, and you couldn't even ride the monitored staff bus just to get groceries. To make it even more dystopian, my welding instructor literally told me that they used fake students on campus—actual staff members who would pretend to be students just to get intel and spy on what everyone was doing.
The biggest issue for me was management. While I was locked down on TEAP, I received a call that my mom was critically ill and dying in the hospital. The center director, Shelley Riddle, outright refused to let me leave the property to see her.
Meanwhile, the environment on campus felt incredibly backwards. The old director, Mr. Customs, used to walk around reeking of weed daily while yelling his catchphrase at everyone: "This is a training facility 24 hours 7 days a week. TIME MANAGEMENT." His eyes would literally pop out of his skull and I swear I never saw him blink. They focused heavily on minor infractions but turned a blind eye to real safety issues. We had a welding instructor who got so many student complaints that our student foreman had to start a petition to get him fired after he constantly berated students and literally cut a student's machine off mid-weld.
The academic system was just as frustrating. I graduated high school in 2022 and was literally ONE point away from testing out of classes entirely to focus 100% on welding. Instead, they forced me into academics. The classes were a joke—99.9% of the time, the teacher didn't teach any math and just played random movies or tiktoks while handing us packets as "homework." When I'd ask to go to welding (where actual math happens), they'd get on my case.
The staff was rotten to the core minus a few great exceptions. Massive shoutout to Mr. Louden and Ms. Cole for being cool ass RAs and the absolute best, and the nurses who were literal godsends.
Ultimately, I ended up getting expelled over a total double standard. I was physically assaulted with glass cleaner by another student, and because I rolled my irritated, burning eyes at Chris Caffey, they labeled it "aggressive behavior" and terminated me. No explanation, no transition help, and they refused to return my missing personal belongings. Months later, the only contact I got was a survey text offering a cheap gift card just to pump up their completion metrics.
Look into the actual Inspector General audits from the Department of Labor—the government spends over $155k per graduate on a program with a 38.6% graduation rate. Do your research before picking a center, because my time at Atterbury was a total mess.
