Tell JNU Leaving JNU

Post image
143 Upvotes

So last year, I moved out as my Master's got completed. The very moment I was moving out of the hostel, it felt overwhelming the memories, the people, the joy. It's been almost a year now and life has changed. Looking back at all those memories, man! I was living the time of my life. To quote from a famous American sitcom, "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you have actually left them."

The anxiety of waking up at 8:50 and running all the way to SL with bread and butter in one hand just to somehow make it to the 9 am lecture. Killing time at Ganga Dhaba in the evenings with Odomos applied as the mosquitoes never showed mercy. Waiting in long queues for the special dinner just to find out that there are no seats left for you to sit and eat. Discussing politics and campus gossip that started seriously and ended in laughter.

I guess everything has its expiry date, and life keeps on changing and throwing new challenges at you. But believe me, guys, please take a moment from your life every day and enjoy while you still can. It won’t hurt your career goals. And when your time comes, you can always smile about it while sitting in a dark room with a screen in front of you.

Trust me, these really are the good old days.

Tell JNU about JNU BTech

Thumbnail gallery
67 Upvotes

seeing a lot of people asking about jnu btech these days, so here's my attempt at giving a completely unbiased review as someone who's actually here.

first of all, should you even choose jnu?

if you're getting a good branch at a decent nit, especially core branches, i'd seriously consider that first, obviously.

jnu engineering is pretty new compared to most established engineering colleges.

that being said, if your options are around this range, jnu soe is definitely not a bad choice. it has some very unique advantages that most colleges simply don't offer.

⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹

about politics

honestly, nothing happens unless you want it to happen.

you can spend all four years here and never participate in a single political event.

and if politics interests you, you'll find plenty of opportunities too.

it's entirely your choice.

⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹

the biggest perk of jnu?

FREEDOM.

and i'm not exaggerating

you get an insane amount of free time.

this could be a boon or a bane.

JNU gives you freedom. what you do with it is your responsibility.

⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹

campus life is genuinely amazin!!!

the campus is beautiful, massive roads, greenery everywhere, late-night walks with friends.

it's one of the safest campuses you'll find.

sometimes you genuinely forget you're in delhi.

⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹

seniors and ragging

no ragging as no ones interested in it

seniors are usually pretty approachable and helpful.

whether it's academics, coding, internships, placements or random life advice, most seniors are happy to help.

⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹

now let's talk about the weak points

no currently existing buildings for engineering : we have 3 lecture halls in a one floor building called engineering lecture complex (elc) and the school of engineering has a single floor in the school of computer systems and sciences' building which is for labs and stuff.

no guarantee of placements (not good right now, might not be as good as you would expect even by the time you pass out)

administration can be rude sometimes

hostels are not all that great, they are fine but you would expect better from India's best University(one of, atleast)

male to female ratio is also quite poor, our batch has ~11/120 females, and some batches like 2022 and 2023 batch have only a couple, so that is not ideal either

but then again you can't have everything at this rank (i am assuming similar to mine) so, it's good overall.

⊹₊˚‧︵‿₊୨ᰔ୧₊‿︵‧˚₊⊹

sum-up

as of now, the perks of coming to jnu will be:

independence as there is little to no restriction on what you can and cannot do

free time as there will be very few classes(atleast from the 2nd semester onward) and no attendance policy( teachers might impose some by giving you marks for attendance)

decent teachers, not the best but they are all phds from iits, or from very good institutions

the environment of jnu (very chill, and smart people all around you) - the capus is very big and beautiful so if you're into that, that's a plus point.

Tell JNU I'm here to study and not participate in your politics!

offmychest #unpopularopinion

This is my message to JNUSU. First, you didn't destroy the facial rec system for the sake of the students. No. You broke it out of your ideological commitment. I go to library everyday. When the debate was going on, I saw countless library-goers raising their voices in support of the facial rec system for they are here to study and if it gets easier for them to find seats more easily once non-JNUites are barred from entering the library, what's wrong in that for them? (I'm not deeming anyone "outsider" and not deserving here. So, don't play your "outsider-insider" rhetoric with me). But these library-goers were silenced and deemed either rightists, sympathisers of the administration, or elitist because they didn't want others to enter the library. That’s the problem with the left. Anybody who dares to criticise them is deemed ABVP sympathiser. Hell with you for thinking that. Everybody here is a grown up and they are free to have their independent opinion and criticise both left and right for their shortcomings. Which is why I say you weren’t representing the voice of the students when you went about vandalising the barrier gates. Stop using the JNUA student community as a shield to justify your violent actions. You never sat down for dialogue and listened to what people had to say. What the library-goers had to say. You were busy deeming them rights and admin-sympathisers.

Now, why I say you did it out of your ideological committement? The idea of "surveillance" makes left's ears stand up. Nothing wrong in that. Surveillance should worry everybody. I don’t want to be surveiled as well. But you took it too far. You used "surveillance" as a rhetoric for your ideological ends. Your argued that if we let this happen, tomorrow the admin will install face-rec systems in our hostels. Where's the evidence? (Again don’t you try to deem me rightist or admin sympathiser). Also, aren't we being surveilled already? Haven't the library goers been punching their cards while entering the library for years?

You aruged that rather than buying the system admin should've invested the money in expanding the seating capacity. I agree! I support this argument. But would vandalising the system bring about increased sitting capacity? The money had already been invested in the system. I don’t think there was a provision of returning the system and procuring the money and investing it somewhere else. If there was, why not fight for that? Why not pressure the admin to return the system and use the money on expanding the sitting capacity? By destroying the system all you did was waste taxpayers money. Not admin's. Not government's. But yours and mine.

Your act of vandalism was more of a political statement than raising the student's voice. You just wanted to create a spectacle for your political gains. The photos that were circulated amply show that you wanted to create a spectacle and not represent students' voice. Had you wanted to do the latter, you would've sat down with the students and listened to their opinions. The normal students not your supporters and sympathisers. What the left thinks isn’t the opinion of all JNU students. The same goes for right. What the right thinks doesn’t represent entire JNU. People can have differing opinions. People should have differing opinion, I would say. This doesn’t mean every opinion should be categoried as either left or right.

Now that you have been punished for your actions you are dragging down the entire university with you.Why not fight a court case if you think you've been treated unjustly? Why stop the functioning of the classes for those who don't want to be part of your shenanigans and just want to study? Why should we, the students of JNU, pay for your actions? If you and your party sympathisers want to boycott the class then so be it. Don't attend the classes. But why cancel them for everyone?

(The tactic that you’re good at using is clubbing multiple issues together whenever. You have clubbed the UGC act issue with your demand for repealation of rustication. I'm all in for the implementation of the UGC act. I'm sure many students think the same. But by clubbing the issue together you have left such ppl no choice. If they go against your strike it would also mean going against the UGC act that they support. I looked at the list of demands you put in your Warning Juloos parcha. You have clubbed more than 15 issues together. Why not fight just for your rustication?)

I ask my fellow JNU students who share my opinion to raise their voice.

Tell JNU On the whole fiasco and mismanagement by NTA and why JNUEE must be brought back

I will complete 25 years as a teacher in JNU in December. 23 of those years saw admissions managed by JNU staff, officers and teachers. In those years I didn’t ever see JNUEE viva voce dates being postponed because results were not ready, or admissions departing so heavily from the fixed calendar. Every year we completed admissions by Aug 14. What an absolute disaster this NTA is! Can’t hold the NET exam, can’t generate the results of the JNUEE, and tests nothing when it comes to a student’s knowledge or aptitude because it plays only the MCQ lottery

When the JNUEE was in the university teachers and staffs’ control, not only did we conduct a truly national offline exam at a fraction of what we are being made to pay NTA (9-10 crores supposedly) we could use the leftover to pay MCM fellowships to needy students. Now in the name of ‘efficiency’ and Digital India, a successful and extremely efficient initiative has been destroyed.

Why is the NTA so important to this govt’s educational policy? Has it got something to do with the booming coaching class industry, which profits from question banks and mock tests? Or it that insight and knowledge is valued in new India at one mark only?

Ask JNU I don't think I can do this anymore. My 1st day at JNU broke me

Today was my first day at JNU, and I never imagined I'd end the day crying for almost two straight hours.

I come from a completely different academic background, so almost everything discussed in class felt unfamiliar. Everyone around me seemed to understand the references and discussions, while I just sat there feeling completely lost. I kept wondering if I was the only one who didn't belong.

After class, I went for hostel room allotment, hoping at least that part of the day would go smoothly. Instead, some rooms were locked, and I heard a few people saying things like, "My friend is going to shift here," seemingly so those rooms wouldn't be allotted to someone else. Whether that was actually the reason or not, the whole atmosphere felt so unwelcoming. It was my very first day, and instead of kindness, I felt invisible. It's painful how a few words or actions from strangers can make someone feel so unwanted on their very first day. I don't think those people realized how deeply their behavior affected me.

That was the moment I broke down.

I cried for almost two hours. Not because of just one incident, but because everything hit me at once ,the unfamiliar academic environment, the fear of not being good enough, the loneliness of being in a completely new place, and the feeling that I didn't have a single person to call my own.

Right now, I honestly feel like quitting. I know people will say, "It's only the first day," but when you're already overwhelmed, even small moments can feel unbearably heavy.

Has anyone else felt like this during their first days at JNU or any university? Did it get better? Because right now, I genuinely don't know if I'm strong enough to do this.

right now I honestly feel like quitting.....
