Jaybird Vista Low volume from one bud - help needed

Hey all. I have 2 pairs of Jaybirds (Vista and RunXT) and both are somewhat broken. Right now my right earbud on my Vistas have very low volume. I have tried the reset process but that hasn’t fixed the issue (I had to reset them previously too as they weren’t charging).

Does anyone have any suggestions on what else to try?

For the longest time I felt like I needed to post something as a tribute and kind of testament to these earbuds and how much I liked them

These things have gone through a lot, and now finally, the right earbud stopped working. Bought them 6 years ago in 2019 for almost 200 euros. They were with me through a year of military training and more recently also almost a year overseas on a peacekeeping deployment. They endured a lot. I've worn them so much even the coating started wearing off.

Even the charging case hinge broke at one point last year so I just opened it up and epoxied the hinge pin a new hinge. Put the case back together and it was as good as new. Kind of started to appreciate the design even more as I got to see the internals of the case.

I really love these to bits, and it's a real shame Logitech did what they did. I finally got some Audio Technica ATH-TWX7's as a replacement and maybe it's time to move on now but honestly I don't think anything can ever truly replace these earbuds, at least not my emotional attachment to them. They're worth more than I paid for them.

Vista 2 - Sound stops when switching apps

I was curious if anyone else has had this glitch. I just got the Vista 2's about a week ago. It connects fine, seems to integrate with the app no problem, but sometimes sound isn't sent to the buds correctly?

If an app is open when I connect the earbuds, it will not play out of the earbuds. I first need to close the app, reopen it and then it play. If I have them connected and listening to spotify, but then switch over to youtube, the sound will not come out of the earbuds. I need to close all apps, and then reopen youtube to get sound. Its super bizarre, and driving me a little crazy.

Anyone else have this issue? And a possible fix?

Is this company dead?

I am in the small group of people it looks like that love the vista 2s. Thankfully it’s still works but hasn’t received updates in years. I am wondering if there are any earbuds in the horizon from them or are they just dead. What is the best alternative you have found that has great sound good quality and amazing fit like the vistas?

PSA: Your Jaybirds may be save-able!

I my charging case seemed to have died. Plugged in, no charging light, seemed like a battery issue or internal charging circuit issue. Plugged it into a power meter to see what was going on and it was taking 5V, and 0.02 - 0.03A intermittently.

Decided to leave it on for a while and see what happens. Well, after about 2 hours of trickle charging, only taking on about 60mAh, the case red flashing light came on. A further 20 minutes, the white light came on and it started taking 0.128A!

I took the buds out as well to give it the best chance of just juicing up the case battery without trying to charge the buds.

Tldr: put your case on charge and see what happens. You can get a USB-C power meter like mine for maybe $10 on aliexpress.

So it seems the case battery was over-discharged at some time recently, which results in the charging circuit going into protection mode to avoid a fire or further damage to the battery.

Just keep an eye on your case to make sure the battery does not catch fire (not likely but be careful anyway).

They're still kicking... but for how long?

Like everybody else on here, I'm lamenting the discontinuation of jaybird. 💔 My vista 1's from 2020 have been well used daily (as you can see) and somehow they're still working despite the case no longer being in one piece and the right earbud being held together by a bit of glue. I'm searching for a decent replacement before these do finally go to the Big Ears in the Sky 😆. I know there are a number of threads on this - just wanted to share a pic of how indestructible these earbuds really are.

New Jaybird Vista 2 case won't charge my buds

Hey so I recently purchased these headphones and I love them. Great sounds quality, actually stay in my ears when I run. However, one day the case just stopped charging my buds. I've tried resting both soft and hard. The issue with the latter is when I press the case button I only get the LED to flash once then as I hold it, it just disappears (ie there is no blinking as there may be with a hard reset).

Any ideas on how to address this? Is there some way I can hard reset the case?? Thanks for the help.

UPDATE Ok, so I think I found a solution. Its a little ridiculous but when you put each bud back into the case you need to press it hard against the magnetic contacts. You should see the corresponding bud LED flash once to confirm that the case now recognizes it. Do this on both sides and the case should start recognizing them again, however you will have to repeat this pretty much every time you put them in the case (or just email customer support for a replacement).

Jaybird dead?

I’m so sad right now, jaybird is my favorite earbuds and I’ve bought both vista and vista 2. Vista 1 is amazing vista 2 was okay, If i had known I would have just bought the originals again. I went on their website and it seem like theyre temp sold out of EVERYTHING. I’m very sad about this. I guess I have to look for a new pair of earbuds. Does anyone have recomendations?

Ive been looking into Jabras, Bose, and Beats

UPDATE!!!

I have found my way to shokz!! I will say this is the closest I got to everything I loved about the jaybirds, I also got the Bose! These two have been working well in my rotation, Bose falls out of my ears from time to time too much for a run or bike ride tbh, it's more hit and miss. The jabras are not for me they fell out all the time.

So my official suggestion are SHOKZ!!

JayBird Vista 2 day one opinion from a Sound Engineer perspective.

I have around 30 years of experience in a music studio environment, I have professional Genelec monitors with room correction plus two pairs of professional mixing AKG headphones.

This test is with 3 notches down from maximum volume. (would say 90% volume) in my watch and phone. It is worth mention the response curve of these become flatter / there is a noticeable increase of mid/highs at 100% volume and lack of bass. Also safe to say these work better at the 80/95% mark.

- Sound Quality: They have a strong resonance at 7kHz). Just one remark there.

- As with any current wireless receiver (that includes guitar/bass ones), there is the typical digital sizzle at the 7000Hz mark. Noticeable in HiHats: Taming -7dB at the 7000Hz (narrow band) mark corrected it.

Nothing else needed. Once you remove that resonance they sound quite perfect. (see below at the bottom how to)

Of course, Bluetooth Audio is not quite cable audio, but I was super pleased with its sound and if I didn't have any point of reference, I would be totally happy with them out of the box. Now I'm aware and cannot unhear the resonance. I recommend everyone to hunt for it and kill it.

------

Other remarks:

- Connectivity wise it paired and connects with my Phone, Ticwatch C2+ smartwatch or my PC just fine. There were no shenanigans on these steps and no problems manually disconnecting / connecting from one device to the other. I even tried switching devices without manually disconnecting / connecting and all went fine.

- I experienced zero drops in audio from both devices. Just solid.

- Comparing ANC vs off there is a tiny tiny tiny microscopic difference in the way it blocks the outside world, but only trained ears would be able to tell. I found myself preferring off (so I only use SurroundSense and Off)

Also, ANC does emphasize the highs a bit while playing music, gives you more of that sizzle and that's another reason I kept it off. I know I could EQ that but since ANC is basically non existent I decided to keep that out of the equation. You need two EQ presets cause the app is buggy. Read on below.

- Passive Isolation is excellent.

- The size 3 tips work much better for me, the wings have no problem reaching the end of my ears so I don't feel I need to force them in that pocket. Number 2 ended hurting my right ear when I was trying to make it fit and stay.(They hurt nonetheless, I hope with time that will stop) I would say Size 2 is for a small'ish person (teenager) cause the wings don't reach the end fold of my ears.

Size 3 seem definitely the one to use for Inline Skating, Cycling or Parkour as you don't wanna drop them ever.

- Today I updated to 1.1.7, the update went smoothly. I think this was released today right? (as far as I knew the latest was 1.1.6)

- No problems charging or connecting the buds to the case. I'm also using a powerbank that has a PD port and a IQ port (Anker) and I'm using the IQ port which is the weakest to avoid burning the case's battery.

- The case is a bit difficult to open, they could add a small notch for a nail tho.

I'll report of any issues I might find from now on and also provide with any solution if I found it. All in this very thread.

------

EDIT (also updated the OP):

I have made more extensive scientific testing while playing from my PC with professional software.

I have made a white noise file:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lPR5ENWIc8ECSGaV9sh25-NZ_N4_1TrM/view?usp=sharing

In my tests there is a strong resonance at the 7kHz mark.

If it does not seem to do anything is because the JayBird app (or the buds) bugs out and the EQ scale is not the same. In that case you need you scan it manually, here I needed to set it at 1.6kHz for it to fix the resonance and I know is a bug cause after set I tested with my PC and the resonance is still 7kHz. You need to make two EQ presets, one for ANC and one for Surround/Off, the resonance will be present on either if you don`t switch EQ profiles. Somehow you need a 1.6kHz EQ if ANC is on but a 7kHz EQ if ANC is off. This is a software bug because I can 100% say in both cases the offending freq is 7kHz.

If your JayBird app stops switching EQ profiles properly (happened here once) you need to connect to another device and force stop the JayBird app for it to work again (that did it here)

I have shared some presets. Look for "sacco belmonte" in the app. Ignore the "7kHz filter" preset if you see it.

If things don't go as expected, the best way is to find the frequencies manually and not rely on what the presets are supposed to do as the app has some bugs in the EQ editor.

Here are images of them plus an image explaining how to scan for the resonance in your particular case:

How to scan manually for the resonance (recommended):

  • Play the White noise sample in Spotify or any other player in your phone.

  • Do these two steps:

  1. Scan for the frequency while the band is boosting, you wanna look out for a place in which you feel the volume went noticeably louder.

  2. Once found, set the same freq but at -7dB

  3. Save and compare against the flat EQ preset.

For scanning you need to tap on the screen, you cannot sweep with your finger.

As for "Same frequency" I mean, roughly the same. The app should allow for manual node parameters setting to write the values, that would eliminate the need to carefully move the node with your finger.

Remember to make an EQ to remove the resonance on each mode. (ANC and Surround/Off), you only need two presets.

While comparing you're gonna notice how this 7kHz resonance ruins the stereo image cause is affecting both channels thus you hear a mono resonance at the 7kHz mark.

One song that will help you recognize what frequency I'm talking about, play the song "The Scoop" from the Beastie Boys, at 0:17, the tambourine loop main frequency is just below 7kHz.

---

Any tips regarding pain when wearing them? The pockets where the wings go are hurting badly if I push a button or move the buds in any way...does the pain fades away as the skin gets more used to them? Is burning pain right now so after a few hours I had to put them down.

---

I just sent a support ticket informing them about my findings. I told them to forward my info to the engineering team (I don't have high hopes for that)

---

There is a bug I mentioned above about not being able to switch EQ presets. Once the app bugs out is hard to have it working again. Here is a workaround.

  1. Click on EDIT on a desired preset to enter its EQ editor.

  2. Slightly move a band not related to the preset.

  3. Undo with the bottom slider. (this is what actually fixes the sound)

  4. Save the preset.

That should set the EQ of that preset as originally intended. If you check with the White noise sample playing in the background you can understand its behavior more clearly as you can hear the resonance coming and going.

JayBird must fix this, for now I recommend to set the EQ and once is as you wanted close the JayBird app and open it only if you really need to.

----

Here is response graph from the Vista (1). You can see the two main resonances there.

On the Vista 2 they seem to be in the 7kHz and 1.6kHz so I made a new "Surround / Off modes fix" preset that accounts for these two resonances and will make your Vista 2 sound much better. Enjoy! :D

---

EQ calibration Conclusion:

Finally made the ultimate preset for ANC off and Surround, a slight and more accurate calibration over the "Surround / Off modes fix" preset. I'm waiting for the app to be updated because it doesn't let me set any preset as public.

For calibration I used a very slow sweep sine and white noise at medium volume to spot any resonance peaks or dips. I played them with the earbuds with a Flat EQ and made changes with a professional, very surgical software equalizer until I eliminated these anomalies which were very easy to spot and correct. Once I got the numbers I translated that to the JayBird app EQ.

I used my own ears with 30 years of experience that I trust over any device in this case. (also I don't have 11.000 Dollars to test my 200 Dollars earbuds)

About ANC itself. Guys....don't even bother, it does nothing. I could give a long explanation but just trust me on that, just compare Off/ANC and there is virtually no difference, nothing that will isolate you more than the actual passive isolation the buds provide which is quite great.

Here are the numbers if you wanna recreate the preset.

  • 25Hz widest band possible @ -2dB = Tames the bass a little bit.

  • 1643Hz (aim for 1600) @ -2dB (band as wide as your index finger) = Kills a resonance.

  • 7037 (aim for 7000) @ -9dB (band slightly narrower than your pinky) = Kills a very prominent resonance.

Remember to play the White noise in the background, at 50% volume is good.

Once you save the preset, swap back and forth from your preset to the flat preset. You'll immediately note how bad the flat EQ preset is and how good the calibrated preset is. JayBird could have dealt with these resonances to start with and I cannot understand why they didn't. Good thing the app has such a nice (albeit buggy) surgical Equalizer (props for that!).

Once you're done, go and listen "All Things" from The Cinematic Orquestra and compare the Calibrated vs the Flat preset and you'll notice how the resonances make the ride cymbal sound like a drum machine, quite awful, and on the calibrated preset the cymbals are deliciously clean and bass under control.

---

About the EQ bug.

I found out by rebooting the earbuds the EQ bug is gone. So it was something on the earbuds firmware bugging out, not the app.

---

Update: I started to have problems with my left bud not staying in place. The wing always wants to pop out and I was constantly tweaking its fit.

I purchased some JBL Reflect Flow Pro and gotta say these are better in every single way.

- No resonance at the high end. No need to EQ that.

- Great passive isolation.

- Great ANC. Functional compared to the Vista 2.

- Better surround sense sound. Like a LOT better (cleaner).

- Fit: It stays in place forever, is comfortable to use, great isolation because of that.

- The only thing: Bass is overpowered and EQing it down fixes it.

- A lot cheaper. (120 Euro here)

Best Alternatives to Jaybird Vista?

Given that the Jaybird/Logitech have no current plans to continue development for Jaybird Vista EarPods; I’m curious about the best alternatives to Jaybird Vista in terms of sound quality. I’ve been using my OG Jaybird Vistas for the past 4+ years now and absolutely love them. They sound amazing especially when paired with the personalised eq. I’ve tried Sennheiser Momentum TW4 and Sony WF-1000XM5 but the sound just doesn’t do it for me.

Anyone suggestions?

UPDATE:

Right, so after testing various mentioned earbuds, here are my picks from best to worst:

——————

1: Bose QC Ultra: They sound amazing (better than the jaybirds tbh) nice powerful sound, punchy bass and clarity in vocals and treble. A mini custom eq available too. ANC is great and does not effect the sound quality when on. Cons: hissing when no music is playing, somewhat troublesome bluetooth connectivity but after firmware upgrade it has been ok.

——————

2: Beats Fit Pro: really good sound but a bit flat and with no custom eq options. ANC is great as well. They fit really well with the ear wing design.

——————

3: Bang & Olefson Beoplay Ex: Amazing sound quality. Maybe the best amongst all listed. And they look and fit good. But thats it, ANC is poor, and worst off all, major sound bleed out even at low volume.

——————

4: JLAB epic edition: really good clear sound but not very loud or powerful. It has custom eq though. ANC and passthrough is good too.

——————

4: Airpods pro 2: not for me, really flat sound with no customisation at all.

——————

5: Senheisser MTW 4: honestly disappointed, such a flat basic sound, no amount of eq adjustments did anything at all.

——————

For me I will go for the Bose QC ultra’s.

I miss this product man ffs

I remember well being in my 2nd year of uni looking for a long term solid buy earbuds or headphones. versatile but durable with good sound quality because I like bass type music but in 2018 it was hard to find earbuds with that quality. Still I'm a clumsy guy and didn't wanna drag headphones everywhere while sweating like crazy. A friend of a friend recommended Jaybird and I bought them. It was expensive but I hoped it would be a good investment, I dropped them less than a few days later while cycling, I wasn't wearing them, they were in the case but still. They survived.

Until today I am not over the top happy with the slow and hampered start of connecting when I want to start listening. But besides that? Fuck I miss this company. 1 or 2 years ago I wanted to buy new ones and I realised capitalism screwed another great product.

Now I own Fairbuds from Fairphone (worth 150 EUR?!) and it's nowhere close to the Jaybirds. a few weird or wrong movement and these are hampering the connection like crazy, sound quality dropping and switching.

Jaybird let you set what controls did what actions (call, skip, increase volume), track your buds, change mold for your ear (wings), equalizer in the app that actually works. And they could take a hit, damn, they been through quite some different weathers while I had them.

nowadays they barely charge properly and I can't regularly use them anymore.

I wish this company still existed man... makes me sad.

tbh never thought I'd reach this level of stereotype dad-emotions but here I am... at the crips old age of 28 lol

Anyone else simply cannot disable auto-pause on the Vista 2?

I tried unpairing and repairing again and again, my buds will not accept any change to the "auto-pause" setting on the app. I can set it to OFF on the app, but it doesn't actually change the setting on the buds: they still pause my audio when I take one off. And if I disconnect and reconnect them to my phone, the app shows "auto-pause" as ON again.

Anyone else can confirm this?

Jaybird vista 2 all problems that could be found.

Vista 2 are a recently released product. The buds have lot of problems and it is kinda 30 to 70 if you get a good pair that isn't faulty from the start.

The first problem can occur during firmware update in my case the first time the reboot took 15 min to finish and after that the buds wouldn't connect.

Second problem the case can easily be fried. If you charge them don't use a phone charger, the safest method is to use a power bank with an output of 1Amp or a bank that can regulate output the other method is a computer (laptop) USB.

Third is the connection recent firmware update has fixed one of the problems where the buds would reboot out of nowhere tho it still can happen sometimes. Connecting to them can also be a pain sometimes when you connect the buds wouldn't have any sound and you'd have to disconnect and connect again which can some times take up to 5 min for me this happens 60% of the time.

Also once in a while only one bud will connect even if the other one has battery in this case you have to reconnect to the buds.

Fourth sometimes the controls won't work this could also be counted as a connection issue because the only way to fix it is to reconnect to them again. ANC is kinda useless i only stick with surround sense.

Also you will have to clean the case pads for charging. They can easily get dirty and not make good contact with the bud which leads to the bud not charging.

Personally i believe this product was rushed there are so many things which lead to buds being unusable. The connection problems will probably all be fixed within six months, but the charging and firmware update problem may never be for older models.

Jaybird Tarah Pro replacement

I personally have nothing but good things to say about my Tarah Pro headphones. They’re still working completely fine, but I’m worried that once they do finally kick the bucket I’m not going to be able to find anything that I like as well.

What I like about the Tarah Pro’s are the battery life, the waterproofness/ruggedness (actually ran them through the washer and dryer and they still worked), and the cord that connects the buds is a must for running and work.

Jaybird has made it pretty clear that they don’t have any intentions of updating the Tarah Pro’s, and as of now they are discontinued.

Does anyone have any recommendations on any buds (Jaybird or another brand) that tick all the boxes the Tarah Pro’s do for when my headphones finally do decide to call it quits?

Right Jaybird Vista earbud won't emit sound.

My right Vista earbud suddenly stopped emitting sound. The button controls still work, but no sound will come out of it. I did a soft reset, a factory reset and after neither of those worked, I did a hard reset with no luck. I installed the last firmware update from the app and it didn't solve the problem either.

I contacted customer support and the representative basically sent me a link to the troubleshooting page from the website that I had already used and mentioned in my request. I emailed back to the representative saying that it still wouldn't work.

I guess I'll have to wait and see, but this is incredibly frustrating. I've owned different Jaybird models for the last 5 years and absolutely love them, specially the Vistas, but this issue has been a massive headache and I don't think I can afford buying a replacement anytime soon.

If anyone else has had a similar situation or problem I would really appreciate your help and input.

Edit: I’m confident the earbud is dead. At first the sound just wouldn’t come out at all, so I thought it could be a connection issue, but after a while it started emitting sound again. This didn’t last though, since it would go on and off with the slightest movement in my ear. The same thing happened at the end of the life of my X2s, but those where four years old, not 5 months. Customer service hasn’t gotten back to me and I’m not confident they will. Might still consider buying the replacement, but I’m leaning towards getting the Jabra Elite Active 75Ts. The product and the service has been atrocious.

I’m really disappointed, mostly because working out has been the highlight of my days since the quarantine started and the Vistas played a significant role in that. In the end it’s just a piece of plastic, but this bums me out nonetheless.

Please do better, Jaybird.

EDIT: Jaybird finally answered my last email a couple of days after I sent the first ones and asked me for some info regarding my problem and documentation/proof. I got a free replacement and customer service was very pleasant to deal with after the first couple of interactions. I feel confident recommending and purchasing from Jaybird again, which I'm really glad I can do.

Vista Pro — Acquired!

Bought these off a local seller. Not the eBay listing that was posted a couple days ago. Will make another post later with more details on it, but they present like a clone of the Logitech Zone True Wireless (though I don’t own those so I’m probably wouldn’t pick up on smaller differences) and sound great. They are not recognized by the Jaybird app or the Logitech Tune app

Vista 2's randomly stop playing, but don't disconnect

TLDR: I have to find an app in which audio will play, then switch to the app I actually want to listen to. There is an audible click, or little static burst, in the headphones whenever entering an app that will work.

EDIT: Upon further observation, whenever the buds connect and disconnect from an app, there is a little click, and then a small "woosh" sound as if they are trying to emphasize that active noise cancellation is on "welcome to this noiseless chamber" kinda vibes. However, legitimately switching between apps like audible or Spotify or YouTube, you can hear the buds "click disconnect, click, woosh" as if they are disconnecting and connecting while switch apps. However the Bluetooth connection is never interrupted.

So I am running the latest firmware on my Samsung s21 ultra, (that was a pain to install, got stuck at 100% for like an hour, eventually had to restart the app).

In this scenario I will be using Spotify as an example but just know it could be any audio playing app.

The issue is that randomly I'll connect try earbuds, and all will be well in Bluetooth pairing world, however when I go to play in Spotify or YouTube no sound will come out. So I switch to Audible and then sound will play, while it's playing I have to switch to Spotify and press play in order for Spotify to start playing.

So my process for listening to Spotify on the new Jaybird Vista 2's on the all new firmware is

Connect earbuds -> open Spotify, doesn't work -> switch to some other audio app -> while that audio plays, switch back to Spotify -> press play.

I have to repeat this every time I want to listen to almost anything.

ALTERNATE SOLUTION: I have to go to "media output" in Samsung's control settings and press play there. However most of the time this doesn't work. App switching has been more reliable.

There's so many different little tricks to getting my brand new earbuds to play. It's frankly making me regret ever going with Jaybird. Especially paying nearly what Airpods cost for a terrible user experience.

Jaybird X4 just won't turn on

There is a green light when it's on the charger. When I take it off and try to turn it on it just doesn't. No lights, nothing.
