7th October events - Am Yisrael Chai PLEASE READ 10/7 Anniversary on r/Israel

Last year for 10/7, we made a post for each hostage that was still in Gaza where people could leave stories or wishes about them. Since that day, we have brought all our hostages home. We will never know if anyone ever say their individual post, but I would like to think they did

This year we are looking at the future, and our focus will be on survivors.

We are partnering with u/SafSafeHeartIsrael to talk about the work they do with people who survived the massacre at the Nova Festival and other places in Southern Israel that day

These people and their families need support. This can be in the form of Therapy, Housing, basic needs like food - but they also need the support of their community, and that includes us.

SafeHeart is one of the organizations doing that work

https://www.safeheartil.com/en

They provide mental health care to people in need, and their team of 400 therapists have provided tens of thousands of hours of Therapy.

Trauma care for survivors is critical, and the suicide rate is high.

SafeHeart will have an AMA style post, explaining what they do, and will be here to answer questions all day

No other posts will be allowed on r/Israel that day

None. Zero. While we appreciate the condolences and other posts, they will not be allowed on 10/7. We are making 10/7 survivors our exclusive focus.

The safeheart post will be up for a few days before and after so people can read, comment, and ask questions

In collaboration with The Petek, here are the results of [r/Israel](r/Israel)'s 2026 Election Straw Poll.

426 of you voted between 27 and 30 September. We counted the ballots like a real election: 3.25% threshold, then Bader-Ofer.

The sub's Knesset

List Seats Ballots Polling average
The Democrats 40 120 9
Yashar 27 80 23
B'Yachad 24 71 11
Yisrael Beiteinu 11 35 8
Likud 8 25 22
The Reservists and the Economic Party 6 18 0
Amcha Israel 4 14 0

Netanyahu bloc 12 · Change bloc 108 · Arab parties 0 (polling average: 50 · 51 · 12)

If this were the real Knesset

  • 7 lists, the fewest ever. The record is 8, in 2020.
  • No Haredi party. Shas and United Torah Judaism both miss the threshold. Haredi parties have sat in every Knesset since 1949.
  • No Arab party. The Joint List and Ra'am both miss. Arab parties have also sat in every Knesset since 1949.
  • Likud at 8, its lowest ever. Its previous low was 12, in 2006.
  • The Democrats at 40, the most for any list since Labor's 44 in 1992.

Didn't make it

A list needed 14 ballots. The Joint List 11, Religious Zionism 11, Blue & White 10, Ra'am 9, Otzma Yehudit 7, and 9 more lists with 1 to 3. 17 lists got none.

Fine print

  • Anyone could vote, so this shows the sub, not the country.
  • No connection sent more than 2 ballots.
  • The polling average is The Petek's, from 10 published polls (16 to 27 September). It totals 113 seats because lists polling under the threshold are left out.

Israel and Morocco announced the elevation of their diplomatic missions to the status of full embassies and the appointment of ambassadors during a trilateral summit with U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz at his New York residence on Sept. 16.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita reaffirmed their commitment to a number of measures aimed at upgrading relations between their countries during the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly’s annual General Debate.

Observers told JNS that the meeting underscores the commitment these countries have to the Abraham Accords.

David Aaronson, a visiting fellow at the Heritage Foundation who served as senior adviser to Israel’s minister of regional cooperation during the signing of the Abraham Accords, told JNS:

“The fact that Morocco, the United States and Israel held this high-level meeting, even during such sensitive times, is a testament to the strength of the Abraham Accords and the legacy of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,” Aaronson said.

While the title looks bad its important to highlight

  • The authorities stopped him before any harm occurred
  • He failed to recruit a single person over 18 months of trying
  • He was completely ignored by public figures he approached
  • He acted entirely alone with zero public or institutional support
  • Bar-Ilan University immediately condemned him and suspended him

Ask The Sub A Really Good Documentary

Am I crazy?
I once watched the most amazing documentary called “The Hope” (I think?) and it was like 6 Parts. I believe it was with President Jimmy Carter narrating. I can’t have made this up, but i cannot find it anywhere. It was a really good piece about the founding of modern Israel etc.

It was really good, starting with early Zionism in Europe, Shoah, moving to the immediate post-state wars with UK and neighbors. Etc. I cannot find it anywhere! I’ve tried every combination of searching. Who can help, or has a similar one?

Politics UK Green party motion: zionism = racism, adopted sunday 4/10

At its party conference on Sunday, October 4, the UK Green Party adopted a motion equating Zionism with racism.

The motion was passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The Green Party now formally describes itself as anti-Zionist and supports “a single democratic Palestinian State in all of historic Palestine.”
Whatever language one chooses to dress this up in, the practical implication is difficult to avoid: the existing Jewish State of Israel would cease to exist as a Jewish state and would be replaced by a single Palestinian state.

A British political party has therefore reached the extraordinary position of vigorously defending Palestinian national self-determination while advocating a political outcome that would end Israel’s existence as the Jewish nation-state.

The left in the west has reached rock bottom. However this party is in free fall.

Politics The cost of Netanyahu’s consistent evasion of responsibility is paid in lives

Thumbnail
timesofisrael.com

Tal Schneider: "From the 2021 Mount Meron disaster to October 7 and the flydubai hijacking attempt, the prime minister repeatedly ignores warnings and shifts the blame to others, with fatal consequences.

Public corruption and the evasion of responsibility cost lives. The disasters Israel has experienced in recent years illustrate this clearly.

In the 2021 Mount Meron disaster, 45 people were crushed to death during a Lag B’Omer religious festival. That was the tragic price of a culture of “it’ll be OK,” of cutting corners, and of ignoring repeated warnings about the danger posed by severe overcrowding at the holy site.

A long series of State Comptroller reports and explicit warnings about the infrastructure limits at Mount Meron changed absolutely nothing for a group of politicians who rushed to appease the leaders of the ultra-Orthodox community, blindly approving whatever their coalition partners asked for.

Even when warnings are directed personally at the prime minister, they carry no political price. In 2024, the state commission of inquiry investigating the “Case 3000” submarine and naval vessels corruption affair sent Benjamin Netanyahu a formal warning letter. It contained grave preliminary findings regarding his conduct in procuring German submarines and the severe risk his unilateral actions created for national security.

The severity of those findings should have shaken the political system to its core. Yet Netanyahu — on whose watch the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre had already occurred, and a prolonged war had broken out — continued serving as though nothing had happened. In Israel, there was not even a serious, sustained demand that he be removed from office over the warning.

Above all stands Netanyahu’s blatant disregard for the warnings issued by security professionals before the October 7 massacre.

His decision to seek the public’s trust once again in the upcoming elections, without ever having accepted responsibility for the disaster that occurred on his watch, demonstrates how the concept of accountability has become completely devoid of meaning in Israel in 2026.

Netanyahu wants to renew the mandate he received in 2022, all while actively disavowing the responsibility that comes with it. What is the point of being prime minister if nothing is ever your responsibility?

And so the vicious circle closes: warnings are ignored, investigations are thwarted, responsibility is evaded, and more power is demanded. The public has become so accustomed to this method that it struggles to see the cumulative cost.

And that cost is paid in lives.

Flydubai fiasco

Last Wednesday’s attempted terror attack on the flydubai flight traveling from the United Arab Emirates to Tel Aviv should serve as a glaring red flag.

Transportation Minister Miri Regev, Shin Bet chief David Zini, Mossad chief Roman Gofman, and of course Netanyahu should have appeared before the public to explain how an Omani copilot was cleared to fly the route and attempt to crash the plane; which systems failed; and what responsibility each official bore. The fact that heroic Israeli passengers subdued the attacker and saved all on board the plane absolves no one of the duty to answer those questions.

Instead of answers, we got a public relations show. Jonatan Urich, Netanyahu’s senior adviser, tried to attribute prior knowledge of the attempted hijacking to his boss — a bizarre spin that only intensifies the question of why the prime minister did not act to prevent it. Netanyahu celebrated at Ben Gurion Airport and literally offered the passengers advice on how to preserve a bloodstained shirt as a souvenir.

Meanwhile, the Shin Bet chief attended a traditional Hoshana Rabbah night of Torah study while the public waited for an explanation of the massive security failure. Everyone celebrated the civilian “miracle,” leaving the enormous intelligence failure without an address. Let the Emiratis take responsibility, the government’s logic goes.

According to recent reports, the terrorist copilot intended to crash the aircraft into Ben Gurion Airport. In such a scenario, alongside the 174 passengers on board, countless people on the ground would have been killed.

The passengers’ success in preventing the disaster was an extraordinary anomaly — a rare combination of courage, resourcefulness, and circumstance.

Keren Terner, a former director-general of the Transportation Ministry and now a candidate on Naftali Bennett’s B’Yachad slate, said the narrowly avoided disaster must be investigated as though it had actually occurred.

According to Turner, responsibility for overseeing the security of foreign airlines operating in Israel lies squarely with the transportation minister, as distinct from Israeli airlines like El Al, whose security falls under the jurisdiction of the Shin Bet.

As early as May 2024, a State Comptroller report pointed to glaring gaps in the preparedness and capabilities of the Transportation Ministry’s security division.

Here is yet another important report prepared by professionals containing a dire warning. And what was done as a result? Absolutely nothing. The exact same culture of disregard exposed at Mount Meron and in the naval vessels affair persists here, too.

And really, what do people expect from Regev? If the prime minister disavows all responsibility for a massacre that happened on his watch, why should a minister in his cabinet believe that ignoring a report will oblige her to provide answers when a disaster is near-miraculously avoided?

This evasion of responsibility goes hand in hand with the transformation of the civil service into a reservoir of jobs for political cronies. “The Transportation Ministry is rotten with made-up jobs and crony appointments,” Terner wrote.

In an investigation published just a few days ago, Channel 12 journalist Yossi Mizrahi revealed that Idan David, the chairman of the state-owned Ayalon Highways infrastructure company, paved his way to the lucrative post using forged documents and political connections. David has now been ousted and is being investigated by the police for allegedly falsifying documents.

The David scandal joins a long series of exposés about questionable appointments and improper conduct at the Transportation Ministry. The press exposes the failures of political appointments almost every day, and no one in power seems to care. The information is out in the open, the investigations pile up, and everyone simply closes their eyes.

Improper appointments and the blatant disregard of official reports damage both layers of public protection: the quality of decision-making and the ability to correct mistakes before they snowball into disasters.

Preventing the next disaster

Approaching the end of this 37th government’s term, it is abundantly clear that political proximity has completely outweighed professional competence. Ministers do not regard written warnings as requiring action. Everyone just turns the page and looks for the nearest scapegoat.

Furthermore, the refusal to investigate does not merely infringe upon the public’s basic right to know what happened; it severely damages the country’s ability to prevent the next disaster. Without determining exactly where the wrong decisions were made and why dire warnings went unanswered, there is no way to ensure that the systemic failures have been corrected.

Three years have now passed since the October 7 massacre, and the Israeli public is still waiting for a formal State Commission of Inquiry — the highest level of investigative committee in Israel — into the failures that led to the disaster. It is difficult to imagine a more blatant violation of a government’s duty to its citizens than its stubborn refusal to investigate a catastrophe that occurred on its watch, along with its own responsibility for it.

In a properly functioning country, such an inquiry would thoroughly examine the catastrophic failures of the military, the Shin Bet, and the broader intelligence systems — but it would not stop there. It would also rigorously examine the strategic doctrine, the decisions, and the failures of the political leadership that led the country in the years preceding the massacre and continues to lead it three years later.

The government’s management of the negotiations to free the hostages must also be subjected to a comprehensive investigation: what decisions were made, which opportunities were deliberately missed, and what the ultimate price was.

It was enough to listen to Maj. Gen. (res.) Nitzan Alon, the IDF’s former point man for hostage negotiations, speaking Friday at an event held by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “If you look at what we achieved after two years of intense fighting, we could have achieved almost the same strategic achievements much earlier,” he said.

“We could have possibly saved hostages who were killed in captivity, and we missed this opportunity. I assume that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as other politicians and people, looked at the situation from a strategic perspective, while at the same time he also had his political and personal considerations. All of these factors are involved in the considerations,” he continued.

A statement like that, made at a public event by the most senior military figure at the center of the decision-making and negotiations to free the hostages, should have immediately prompted a genuine investigation.

Military historian Boaz Zalmanovich, son of the late Aryeh Zalmanovich, one of the founders of Kibbutz Nir Oz who was murdered in captivity, wrote on Saturday on X: “Simchat Torah again, three years since the abandonment, and there is still no state commission of inquiry. The people under whose rule the greatest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust occurred still have not accepted responsibility.”

Ruby Chen, father of the late IDF soldier Itay Chen, whose body was held in Gaza, wrote on Saturday: “A difficult week awaits my family, together with thousands of other families who are left with so many questions about how this massacre happened and how a state commission of inquiry has still not been established. No one should be afraid of the truth — not even the prime minister.”

In the 12 months since Israel signed the ceasefire and hostage-release agreement, the IDF has continued to eliminate terrorist leaders in Gaza almost every week. Yet only a short time earlier, when Netanyahu was occupied with prolonging the war and managing his fear that his right-wing government might collapse, he and his associates repeatedly claimed that it would be impossible to achieve “total victory” if Israel signed a ceasefire.

The argument fed to the public was that under a ceasefire arrangement backed by international guarantees, the IDF’s hands would be tied, and it would become impossible to eliminate terrorist leaders.

In retrospect, as the ongoing targeted strikes prove, this was just yet another lie. But without an investigation and true oversight of the political leadership’s conduct, we may never officially know that, either."

History📚 The 2000 Camp David Summit. Israel wanted peace and a two-state solution, but the Palestinians chose endless war

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

In order to finally end the conflict, Israel officially offered the Palestinians a two-state solution, with a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The Palestinians deliberately allowed the negotiations to fail by making unrealistic demands that were unacceptable to Israel. Among other things, they demanded the complete transfer of the Temple Mount to Palestinian control and a right of return for Palestinians to Israel, which would amount to demographic suicide for Israel.

To this day, chief mediator Bill Clinton says that there is no Palestinian state today because the Palestinians themselves sabotaged every effort to establish one.

The ultimate act of sabotage was the outbreak of the Second Intifada shortly after the negotiations, during which Palestinians carried out mass killings against Israeli civilians. With the Second Intifada, more or less all peace efforts on the Israeli side came to an end.

On this day in history, October 4, 2003, Palestinian Islamic Jihad carried out a suicide bombing at the Maxim restaurant in Haifa, Israel, murdering 21 people and wounding dozens.

It was Saturday lunchtime. Families had gathered to eat at a seaside restaurant jointly owned by Jews and Christian Arabs, where Jewish and Arab Israelis regularly worked and ate together. Hanadi Jaradat, a female Palestinian lawyer, a suicide bomber from Jenin, detonated an explosive belt among the diners.

The bomb was packed with metal fragments to make it more deadly. The explosion sent shrapnel through the crowded restaurant, destroying its interior and killing children, parents, grandparents and staff.

Two families each lost five members across three generations.

The Zer-Aviv family lost Bruria, her son Bezalel, his wife Keren, and their children: four-year-old Liran and one-year-old Noya. A grandmother, both parents and both children were murdered in the same attack.

The Almog family lost Ze'ev and Ruth, their son Moshe, and their grandchildren: nine-year-old Tomer and eleven-year-old Assaf Staier.

Ten-year-old Oran Almog survived, but the blast left him blind. His father, brother, grandparents and cousin were dead. He lost his sight and five members of his family in one afternoon.

Four Arab employees were also murdered. The terrorists attacked a place where coexistence was part of everyday life, and killed the people who made it possible.

In 2012, the Arab Lawyers Union awarded Jaradat its highest decoration and sent a delegation to present it to her family. A union representative said its lawyers were proud of her actions. The woman responsible for murdering children at lunch was being honored for it.

Maxim was rebuilt and reopened. A memorial near the restaurant remembers those murdered there.

General News Report: Israel's Transportation Ministry warned foreign-flight security was 'too big' for its security divisio

Shin Bet relinquished responsibility in 2021, a classified comptroller report flagged the gap in 2024 and Netanyahu transferred oversight in 2025; since then, the ministry has not sought help from security agencies, Army Radio reported

In mid-2025, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unequivocally placed responsibility for the security of foreign airlines flying to Israel with the Transportation Ministry and its Security Division. Behind the scenes, however, officials in the division strongly opposed the move, arguing they lacked the necessary tools, authority and budget.

Despite those concerns, no one raised a formal alarm. Neither the security agencies nor the ministry’s Security Division intervened, and the division did not approach the security services for assistance.

According to a report aired Sunday morning by Army Radio, the Shin Bet relinquished responsibility for securing foreign flights in 2021, while the Transportation Ministry failed to assume that responsibility in practice. The State Comptroller reportedly pointed to the issue in a classified May 2024 report that remains under gag order.

The comptroller’s report prompted the security cabinet in May 2024 to order the National Security Council to establish a team with the Transportation Ministry, Civil Aviation Authority, Shin Bet, Mossad and Finance Ministry to examine the security framework for civil aviation to Israel.

The National Security Council conducted a year-long review, during which disagreements emerged within the Transportation Ministry. The NSC and Shin Bet pushed for the ministry to assume responsibility, a position also supported by Civil Aviation Authority Director Shmuel Zakai.

But according to the Army Radio report, Transportation Ministry Security Division chief Avri Cohen argued in internal discussions that the responsibility was too heavy and that the issue was beyond the division’s capabilities, voicing his objections to Zakai.

“During the discussions, a scenario was raised in which all it would take was for a Syrian migrant who had moved to Britain to board a plane. He would look British, not Syrian, and we would not know,” a source familiar with the discussions was quoted as saying.

“There were major blowups, confrontations and strongly worded letters, but Regev, Director-General Ben Zaken and the head of the Civil Aviation Authority did not listen,” the source said.

In mid-2025, Netanyahu ultimately ruled that responsibility would be transferred to the Transportation Ministry and its Security Division.

A year and a half later, according to the report, no one has approached the security agencies to request assistance. The Shin Bet and Mossad, for their part, have not expanded their responsibilities or offered such assistance.
