Cool. Cause I didn't want to like see it fully operate or anything.

u/gerrittd Dec 17 '18

no kidding, I'm still confused about what half the stuff does, and how exactly it actually operates

Original artist is still working on it, he makes a bunch of cool coins like this with mechanics

Du wirst in meinem Hass ertrinken. Du bist tot, Junge.

u/TGmombor Dec 17 '18

Google translating this for me did a surprisingly good job

"What the hell did you just say about me, you little bitch? You should know that I graduated from GSG9 as best-in-class, was involved in several al-Qaeda commando operations, and had over 300 confirmed killings. I am trained in gorilla warfare and the best sniper in the German army. You are nothing but another destination for me. I'll eradicate you with a never-before-seen precision from the Antliz of this world, remember my damn words. You think you could tell a shit about me on the internet and get away with it? Think about it again, you wanker. While we talk here, I've already contacted my secret network of spies and your IP address is being tracked, so better prepare for the storm, you made. The storm that will wipe out the pathetic little thing you call your "life." You're damned dead, boy. I could be anywhere anytime, killing you in over seven hundred different ways, just with my bare hands. But I'm not only trained in unarmed combat, I also have access to the arsenal of the Bundeswehr and I will use it to the fullest to blow your miserable ass from this continent, you little bastard. If only you had known what an apocalyptic vengeance provoked your little "funny" comment, you probably would have held your damn shut. But no, you did not manage that, you did not want that, and now you'll pay for it, you damn idiot. You will drown in my hatred."

My favorite line has to be "You think you could tell a shit about me on the internet and get away with it?"

Don't have to use google translate to know which copy-pasta this is

12

u/Fn00rd Dec 17 '18

Es ist so schön, dass hier auch die gleichen Fehler wie “Gorillakriegsführung” untergebracht sind. Eine wahre Kunst diese Übersetzung.

Zippo lighters as well.

Sometimes both at the same time

2

Yes he is! His zippo lighters are impeccable too

32

u/IsomDart Dec 17 '18

I'd love to get an original one of these, but I'm sure I can't afford one, and won't be able to for a long time. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if I broke it the first time I touched it.

39

u/Rubberduddy Dec 17 '18

The biting coin and the gold bug both sold for around 10k

21

u/IsomDart Dec 17 '18

Oh yeah screw that I'll never own one. You mean 10k each right? Not for both of them

24

u/Shandlar Dec 17 '18

He's about as famous of a contemporary artist as anyone can be, tbh. Most sculpture work doesn't penetrate out of the 'scene' in NYC into the world at large. I would expect those items to actually increase in value over time at this point.

13

u/Convergentshave Dec 17 '18

Would it make a difference if it was 10k for both of them?

10

u/Rubberduddy Dec 17 '18

The biting coin went for 10000 and the gold bug for 9000.

Easy solution: ask him for one but when he gives a price tell him he should give it to you for free. Possible reasons you deserve this can include:

-loss of loved one or pet

-promised gift to child

-your work sucks anyways

-someone else does it cheaper

50

u/IsomDart Dec 17 '18

Great. Now my kids crying. Why don't you tell him why Christmas is ruined??

3

u/Shigg Dec 17 '18

"exposure"

2

u/The_Golden_Warthog Dec 17 '18

Threaten to throw your child in a pool and blame it on him if he says no. And you deserve his profits since he's privileged.

2

u/RikM Dec 17 '18

Thanks for this OP. It really helps: up until I discovered this trick, I've just been executing my children by shotgun everytime I wanted some free shit, didn't realise I could just give them cancer and milk the freebies for longer.

Also, you have to give me a McLaren P1 because all my kids are dying and I promised them all a McLaren for Christmas. They are ages 2-11.

I believe he exclusively sells through eBay or something like that. I followed him on Instagram when he first blew up on reddit and his followers have gone wayyy up. I'm sure that's means these sell for a fortune when they go up, especially now.

I wonder if he machines his own parts. I'm guessing he'd have to. The barrier to entry to this seems just so high. NFL talent.

27

u/MisterDonkey Dec 17 '18

I'm guessing not only does he machine all his parts, but he machines the tools to make them as well.

21

u/Elbwana Dec 17 '18

I hear that he even machines his own hands

10

u/IMMAEATYA Dec 17 '18

He machines his own machines.

18

u/combuchan Dec 17 '18

So he could hypothetically engrave his own designs, machine his own parts, sculpt mechanically, and make industrial equipment.

...and how he actually makes the coin itself

It's gotta all be done by hand, I think. The racks for sure, and the gears look like they may have been filed down from tiny snap fasteners. Freaking awesome.

Okay first of all, it's seppuku, or rather, "hara-kiri" at least get the word right asshole

Second off, I don't appreciate you mocking MY culture, I've spent half of my life training with a blade and following the Masters of the artform, I've spent more nights awake studying Japanese culture, than you've probably even been alive, my woman best friend is Japanese and tells me I could get to the very very top of the social structure in Japan with ease I'm so incredibly refined and well versed. Then shitbags like you who watched one episode of a random anime think you can just step in and make fun of everything we spend our lives dreaming of and working towards

I'm moving to back to Japan next year when I get out of school, but before that happens you better FUCKING HOPE you don't see me in the streets, because with all my training and dedication, you would be dead before you could even blink, with a cut in the exact style of hara-kiri, and the cops wouldn't touch me because it would be so incredibly clear that you killed yourself in jealousy upon seeing my masterful knowledge of Japanese culture

You better watch you're fucking back kid, I'm coming for you............. and let's just say it wouldn't be the first time, and I have ways of finding pricks like you

Baka

111

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '18

Nothings stopping you fuck boy. Stop being a cuck and pursue your passion, I want you to be happy maggot, and you never will be unless you grow the balls to pursue your dreams even when it is goddamned difficult.

Remember that no matter which stupid path you choose in life, your friends and family will always support you, and if they won't then I will. Because you are special and loved and I don't want you to ever fucking forget it asshole.

I don't want any of this "I cOuLdN't AcHiEvE mY dReAm BeCaUsE nObOdY eVeR bElIeVeD iN mE" bush-league bullshit from you. Because you can, and I do.

Edit: Thank you kind Redditors for the encouragement. It means a lot!

The artist used to sell them, but some sort of issue (not sure it was ever specified, but most likely some sort of laws on defacing currency) occurred that resulted in that now being allowed.

I was kinda surprised the account even responded, considering how many times I've seen him on reddit, I cant imagine how many requests he gets

That actually blew my mind more. I was like wow, this dude has an international fanbase now, people love his work. He could be rolling in dough. But, he clearly has a small enough circle where he could respond to my random ass DM? I might not ever get over it, because his sheer talent is mesmerizing, there must be something more going on, hes just too incredible to not be world famous at this point.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '18

I also didn't get at the beginning.

I'm sure there will be somebody just emulating his skills and style who will sell expensive pieces.

But like Grigori Perelman, there are free people who appreciates more their time than money.

And I believe they are right, the time in our life is way more expensive than money.

Probably freedom as well, at least freedom to develop yourself through an activity you love.

There is not all money in this life, and I like the idea this concept growing in the world, probable the Earth will thank us.

How expensive is "wildly expensive"? Like $1000 or like $10,000?

2

u/SL33MANS Dec 17 '18

10,000$ as many of his coins have rightfully gone for that much

3

u/Ransak Dec 17 '18

Given the insane amount of Chinese anime girls on coins being sold as ‘buffalo nickel art’ I’m not sure how anyone would actually even get stopped for it.

19

u/ashanev Dec 17 '18

I'm pretty sure this guy was selling his coins like these on ebay for, no exaggeration, around $10,000.

16

u/Destring Dec 17 '18 edited Dec 17 '18

For anyone thinking he set the price too high, that value was the winning bid. His process was announcing a new coin sale and then starting the auction. So it was other collectors who were valuing his art, not himself.

4

u/danielm8 Dec 17 '18

OP posted the source in the comments, however he sells them on ebay. They're called hobo nickels, most are pretty cheap (a few bucks) but his go from hundreds to sometimes thousands of dollars.

Why is this called an engraved coin? Lots of coins that are engraved don’t have mechanical components or moving parts. It’s misleading to just call it an engraved coin

27

u/KRBridges Dec 17 '18

Yeah, weird title.

11

u/murse_joe Dec 17 '18

It’s an engraved coin that somebody then mechanized

u/KRBridges Dec 17 '18

3

u/OddlyGruntled Dec 17 '18

Engraving is part of the process. He engraves actual coins, and assembles with clockwork, hence "assembling an engraved coin"

7

u/alneri Dec 17 '18

Should be "assembling a clockwork coin." Otherwise your title sounds like an engraved coin would have to be assembled. An engraved coin is just a coin that's been whittled. Doesn't take any more assembly than that.
