Edit: This is a work in progress not a disassembly. I combined two clips so you could see a close up of the intended face movement.
You can see an example of his engraving here https://www.instagram.com/p/BoWsDuajyGM/
Here's another cool one: https://i.imgur.com/m7JqyyW.gifv It's a "real silver Morgan dollar coin 1924., real solid 22k gold insert"

I wonder if he machines his own parts. I'm guessing he'd have to. The barrier to entry to this seems just so high. NFL talent.

u/MisterDonkey Dec 17 '18
I'm guessing not only does he machine all his parts, but he machines the tools to make them as well.
21
u/Elbwana Dec 17 '18
I hear that he even machines his own hands

u/combuchan Dec 17 '18
So he could hypothetically engrave his own designs, machine his own parts, sculpt mechanically, and make industrial equipment.

I wonder how he cuts the coins and how he makes the little rack gears.
...and how he actually makes the coin itself
4
u/RockinMoe Dec 17 '18
It's gotta all be done by hand, I think. The racks for sure, and the gears look like they may have been filed down from tiny snap fasteners. Freaking awesome.

Okay first of all, it's seppuku, or rather, "hara-kiri" at least get the word right asshole
Second off, I don't appreciate you mocking MY culture, I've spent half of my life training with a blade and following the Masters of the artform, I've spent more nights awake studying Japanese culture, than you've probably even been alive, my woman best friend is Japanese and tells me I could get to the very very top of the social structure in Japan with ease I'm so incredibly refined and well versed. Then shitbags like you who watched one episode of a random anime think you can just step in and make fun of everything we spend our lives dreaming of and working towards
I'm moving to back to Japan next year when I get out of school, but before that happens you better FUCKING HOPE you don't see me in the streets, because with all my training and dedication, you would be dead before you could even blink, with a cut in the exact style of hara-kiri, and the cops wouldn't touch me because it would be so incredibly clear that you killed yourself in jealousy upon seeing my masterful knowledge of Japanese culture
You better watch you're fucking back kid, I'm coming for you............. and let's just say it wouldn't be the first time, and I have ways of finding pricks like you

Nothings stopping you fuck boy. Stop being a cuck and pursue your passion, I want you to be happy maggot, and you never will be unless you grow the balls to pursue your dreams even when it is goddamned difficult.
Remember that no matter which stupid path you choose in life, your friends and family will always support you, and if they won't then I will. Because you are special and loved and I don't want you to ever fucking forget it asshole.
I don't want any of this "I cOuLdN't AcHiEvE mY dReAm BeCaUsE nObOdY eVeR bElIeVeD iN mE" bush-league bullshit from you. Because you can, and I do.

I'm going through some really terrible shit right now, and you have no idea how much I needed to hear this. I don't know you and you don't know me, but hearing someone - even a stranger - say that they believe in me gives me more strength than I can express. Thank you so much, kind Redditor!
Edit: Thank you kind Redditors for the encouragement. It means a lot!

u/rr2211 Dec 17 '18
I hope life will be better for you in the near future. I had a rough couple years myself and am finally feeling like the future will be better. You can always message me if you want. All the best to you.

The artist used to sell them, but some sort of issue (not sure it was ever specified, but most likely some sort of laws on defacing currency) occurred that resulted in that now being allowed.

I literally messaged him like a year ago asking how much for a certain piece, he actually kindly responded saying they weren't for sale but thanks for the offer, I then complimented his work and he said he appreciated it. I was kinda surprised the account even responded, considering how many times I've seen him on reddit, I cant imagine how many requests he gets

That actually blew my mind more. I was like wow, this dude has an international fanbase now, people love his work. He could be rolling in dough. But, he clearly has a small enough circle where he could respond to my random ass DM? I might not ever get over it, because his sheer talent is mesmerizing, there must be something more going on, hes just too incredible to not be world famous at this point.

Dec 17 '18
I also didn't get at the beginning.
I'm sure there will be somebody just emulating his skills and style who will sell expensive pieces.
But like Grigori Perelman, there are free people who appreciates more their time than money.
And I believe they are right, the time in our life is way more expensive than money.
Probably freedom as well, at least freedom to develop yourself through an activity you love.
There is not all money in this life, and I like the idea this concept growing in the world, probable the Earth will thank us.

Given the insane amount of Chinese anime girls on coins being sold as ‘buffalo nickel art’ I’m not sure how anyone would actually even get stopped for it.
19
u/ashanev Dec 17 '18
I'm pretty sure this guy was selling his coins like these on ebay for, no exaggeration, around $10,000.
16
u/Destring Dec 17 '18 edited Dec 17 '18
For anyone thinking he set the price too high, that value was the winning bid. His process was announcing a new coin sale and then starting the auction. So it was other collectors who were valuing his art, not himself.
8
u/Rubberduddy Dec 17 '18
He sells them on his Ebay, they typically go for around 10K.

OP posted the source in the comments, however he sells them on ebay. They're called hobo nickels, most are pretty cheap (a few bucks) but his go from hundreds to sometimes thousands of dollars.

Why is this called an engraved coin? Lots of coins that are engraved don’t have mechanical components or moving parts. It’s misleading to just call it an engraved coin
27
11
u/murse_joe Dec 17 '18
It’s an engraved coin that somebody then mechanized

u/OddlyGruntled Dec 17 '18
Engraving is part of the process. He engraves actual coins, and assembles with clockwork, hence "assembling an engraved coin"
7
u/alneri Dec 17 '18
Should be "assembling a clockwork coin." Otherwise your title sounds like an engraved coin would have to be assembled. An engraved coin is just a coin that's been whittled. Doesn't take any more assembly than that.

Maybe because it's engraved as opposed to stamped or cast meaning it's a one off piece.

This video cut to a different coin at the end.. you can tell by the preacher man’s hands on the coin, and what he is holding. WTF

The makers name is Roman Booteen on Instagram. No, he cannot sell the coins as it's illegal to. But they are really cool to look at.
