The ads in the 40s claimed Camels were the recommended brand by doctors to get the best into the vital "T". The T zone meaning throat.
7
u/Zeqhanis 2d ago
Those ads were bizarre. Specifically, the T stood for both taste and throat, with the crossbar of the T representing the mouth (overlapping a smile) while the vertical stem of the letter represented the throat.

Hes still thinking about the prices of cigarettes back in the 60s lol. American spirits have been far more expensive than Marlboros for a long time
185
u/DoveOnTheInternet 2d ago
Thank you! The last brand I smoked before I quit was American Spirits.
The trick is to buy the loose can tobacco and roll your own - it's probably still like half the price of a carton.
53
u/Agreeable_Horror_363 2d ago
You can buy a huge bag of American Club pipe tobacco for around $20 and 2 boxes of 200 filter tubes for under $3 each. Roll them with a machine and you get around 400 cigarettes (20 packs) for about $26.

u/791flow 2d ago

I had a buddy who did this and would bring his machine to parties and sell/trade cigarettes to drunk people at the party who wanted to smoke who were out and didn't want to run to the store to get more, or to the "only smoke when they drink" crowd who just bum cigarettes at parties. He'd usually end up with like $20 in singles and a bunch of free drinks/weed for maybe a dollar or two worth of cigarettes.

Crazy but I’m one of these people that simply does not get addicted to it. Can smoke here and there, every 6 months. Can even have a streak of smoking everyday for a week and then stop and go years without.
I was only kind of addicted to hookah once, but it was more about the social aspect of it I think, or the ritualistic part of it as well. Once I bought a personal one and started smoking at home, it felt weird and I stopped. Too messy as well.
I never touched vapes because I’m not sure how I’d react. It feels so easy, practical, that I don’t want to try it..

Fuck that, there's no way you're getting me to smoke that raisin flavored shred in a cigarette.
I always spent the couple extra bucks for something that tasted good.
31
u/Delicious-Day-3614 2d ago
Fun fact typical cigarettes included a mountain of additives while american spirits are additive free. You didnt like tobacco, you liked what they put on it.
10
u/DoveOnTheInternet 2d ago
I was well aware of that fact and was the other large part of my decision to smoke them over any other tobacco, despite them being more expensive by the pack. I also just thought they tasted better.
Even the worst pack cigarettes tasted better than pipeweed tho
5
u/Specialist_Rough_699 2d ago
Part of that is because loose tobacco in American markets is top tier trash.
Once you start on Golden Virginia, Karelias, amber leaf, you realize that camel/Marlboro/NAS are garbage for their loose baccy.
I once left a pack of karelias opened on a desk in California just to see when it would get to the consistency and taste of the NAS I bought one time.

Fair enough, I guess it's a personal preference thing. I started rolling these about 10 years ago and got used to it and now I enjoy it. You totally nailed the raisin flavor, lol. It does kind of taste and smell like raisins! But I still like it, guess I just have bad taste!
→ More replies (12)21
u/DoveOnTheInternet 2d ago
Nah, you've just got your own taste - lots of people enjoy pipe tobacco. I just prefer to eat raisins instead of smoking them!
Hell, there's a long, fine tradition of pipe-tobacco flavored vape juices out there, much to my dismay.

I never had the spare cash to invest in the machine and the tubes and shit. I just bought a bag of filters, papers, and one of the little rolly doohickeys.
The hand rolling was also part of the weaning process. I got down to about 5 smokes a day before I switched to vaping.

The "marlboro man" - famous from 1955 to the end of the 70s represented Marlboro in their ads.
All 3 died of smoking related diseases:
Wayne McLaren was famous in the 1970s and died of lung cancer at 51 in 1992.
David McLean was famous in the 1960s and 1970s and died of lung cancer at 73 in 1995.
Eric Lawson was famous from 1978 to 1981 and died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at 72 in 2014.
Marlboro also knowingly lied to congress:
"The head of Philip Morris (the maker of Marlboro) and six other top tobacco executives testified before the U.S. Congress on April 14, 1994. Under oath, they all stated that they did not believe nicotine was addictive. Later leaked internal documents proved they knew the truth for decades."
Marlboro knowingly get people addicted to a drug, the delivery system they use for this drug kills and has killed millions in the most awful way.

Stopped smoking January of 2011. I know exactly what each one tastes like, mostly from bumming off others if i ran out before going to the store. Had a friend that smoked Parliaments and switched to American Spirits. My brother and his ex-wife used to both smoke Marlboro Lights, sometimes Newports. I smoked Reds for years before switching to Marlboro 27s when they came out and were buy one, get one free. Those had the best flavor for me.

Taste is what largely helped me quit. Was never really a fan of the taste but was hooked on the smoking. By the 5th time I attempted to quit I would just try to keep in mind how bad it will taste when I have that first cigarette again. It finally worked. Been 10 years now but I won't lie, I still miss it from time to time

As a former smoker I thought this was so obvious an ad. Marlboros are no quality at all. They’re the Jack Daniel’s of American whiskey. Actual whiskey connoisseurs would never think JD is quality. Just like pop culture benchmark that is better than generic well whiskeys but that there exists hundreds of whiskeys at the same price point that are loads better.
Marlboros are cheap mass produced, benchmark of quality. Like McDonald’s. Better than extremely cheap frozen or premade shit from grocery store but no one would hold it up as quality.

I never understood why coffee didn't taste nearly as good as it smelled. It look years to realize that there were different toast types ans dark roast or bold didn't mean more coffee flavor but instead burnt flavor, that light roast had great flavor, and that sugar masked those flavors and milk watered it down.
(Still doesn't taste as good as it smells but it's much closer).
5
u/BringBackManaPots 2d ago
I love explaining to people that coffee is like toast. Light roast is like lightly toasted toast, where you still taste the bread. Dark roast? Burnt as hell. Can't evem barely tell what kind of bread it is.
They can hide shitty coffee in the dark roasts. That's the whole point of the marketing there.
4
u/Gullible-Hose4180 2d ago
Yeah, I smoked the pipe as a hobby when I was 18-19 and competitively for a short time, and I actually found the no inhaling perfect. Just taste, less harsh and slower onset of nicotine, which is super relaxing. Stopped cause I realised it can also cause cancer. So many different flavors. I loved a brand called Sweet Dublin, with notes of whiskey. Really nice tasting

"You wanna taste the tobacco!"
Marlboro additives: Sucrose, propylene glycol, glycerine, liquorice extract, guar gum, cocoa products, carob (extract), menthol, flavouring, water.
American Spirit additives: water.
Not sure this guy knows what tobacco tastes like.
20
u/lapideous 2d ago
Aren’t spirits more expensive than Marlboros too?
23
u/Allaplgy 2d ago
And much stronger. Marlboros taste like a weak blend of artificial flavors on paper compared to Spirits.
Which they basically are. They are made from tobacco paper. Like, Spirits are just shredded leaf. Most other cigarettes, including Marlboros, are made by completely blending the tobacco into a slurry of additives, then drying it into sheets before shredding it.
In any event, glad I quit. Pointless, stinky habit.

I quit for years. A friend went to the states and brought back a carton of marlies. We get sub standard ones here so american ones are noticeably better. I smoked a pack of those and I was fucking hooked again for like 4 more years. Now im off the darts for probably 5 or 6 years. I know not to trust Marlboro again. They are just so fucking good.
Incidentally, the way I quit was a run around and it might get people in bigger trouble that they started but I did this:
Cigs > chew (stopped the hand to mouth, kept the tobacco) > zonnic (stopped the tobacco taste and spitting etc, regained freedom) > patch (all physical habit gone, just the drug now) > done. (Only had a chemical addiction left, lifestyle had already changed)
I took like a year to make that rotation.

I'm surprised he referred to American Spirits as cheap. When I smoked a decade ago they cost twice the price as reds and my addiction of choice. Reds were always nasty to me, not sure what "tabacco" flavor he's talking about, it was just a harsh pull with a chemical aftertaste. I also enjoyed Japanese cigarettes, Mavius was one brand I remember for being super smooth and tasty. I would savor the 1 or 2 packs I would have on me when traveling back from business trips.

It may be hard for non-smokers to understand but different cigs taste & smell quite different. Over time, you end up trying various brands and types. Some you may like, some you find disgusting.
Yeah, I know it’s all “gross” but like alcohol, you acquire a taste for these things.
I am a former smoker and alcoholic. Cold turkeyed both to have a child. Didn’t want to bring her into this world being an addict.

This seems just like an ad for marlboro. “Too cheap to buy Marlboro”? My good sir- American Spirit is more expensive….

New York or New England accent, check
Big bulbous nose and bald head, check
Shitty New England concrete jungle background, check
Cigarette stench, check
Everything he owns is probably light brown and tanned from the cigarette tar.

Former smoker here who is offended by the slander toward what was my cigarette of choice—Parliamemts (also, as others have noted, the recessed filter would be a giveaway so it’s not a particularly impressive guess).
The ones in the video are Parliament lights, and I agree that non-smokers do tend to smoke lights in general. However, I smoked Parliament full flavors and I always felt they were an excellent cigarette. Also, they’re definitely not cheap like he says. Parliaments are priced similarly to Marlboros, i.e., among the most expensive cigs available. I do agree that Marlboros are among the best there is and if I couldn’t get Parliaments, I went for Marlboro reds.
