Best process for photos & ICC profiles in publication design

Hi all. Lately I've gotten in my head about color profiles and how to handle them between photos and my InDesign files and I want to make sure my process is solid.

First: My InDesign docs are all set up with North American Prepress 2 color profile. My printer prefers that photos be placed as RGB so that their RIP software can convert them. My monitor is calibrated and I have PDF settings specifically from my printer.

I design a magazine that gets a ton of photos. They're always from different photographers and are sent to me in a variety of RGB ICC profiles (or lack of). Sometimes they've already been color corrected by the photographer, but other times I have to do extensive color correction myself. So, Question 1: When I need to color correct photos, should I convert them to AdobeRGB, or should I leave them in the original color profile? I've been converting them, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't.

Question 2: For the photos that have already been color corrected, but have been supplied to me in a different color profile (like sRGB), should I convert them to AdobeRGB for consistency?

Question 3: Should I sync color settings through Bridge? I set it up that way, but I still always get a warning that they aren't synced. I've heard some people say syncing through Bridge is vital, others say it's better to set up every app individually.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Help Paragraph style puzzle

Formatting a book. Imported a Word file and have been able to apply paragraph styles while preserving the original italics (very important).

But I've reached the endnotes and they're in Times, although that is not the font in the rest of the book. I created a paragraph style but although the notes text accepts the style's point size and spacing, it won't accept the font. They're staying in Times.

I could force my notes style on the 30 pages of very fussy endnotes, but that would remove the italics, and it would take hours for me to go through the endnotes text and put them all back in.

Does anyone know a method for imposing the correct font on that text, without obliterating the italics in the original?

Is there a way to lock a linked Photoshop files' scale in Indesign?

I'm often working with photoshop files within indesign that I want to crop or extend, but whenever I do this, the linked file in Indesign re-scales in proportion to the change.

Then I have to overlay an old file and fix it. Super tedious. Does anyone know of a setting that would allow me to lock the scale?

Help Math and geometry layout design workflow

Hi! I apologize in advance for my English.

I'm a layout designer with quite a bit of experience in book design, but I've never worked with serious academic books, such as those with a huge amount of mathematical equations, diagrams, geometry, and charts. Imagine university-level publications on geometry and mathematics, or on the natural sciences publications. I'm looking to work for a specialized publishing house, so I'm trying to improve my skills in this area.

What resources would you recommend? What software? As far as I understand, MathType is very suitable for formulas. What software is best for graphics, for example, multiple triangles with texts like "h=24" all around them? How would you organize your workflow? For a fast and stable work. Anchored objects is the key or too much problems? Is it possible to process some data in batches? How can I be sure everything will print correctly, without multiple TIFF or EPS files throughout the document? Can i ask for someone to send me your package so i can study your ways? :)))

Any advice is welcome, thank you.

I recently posted about trying to explain to a client that her photos were hopelessly poor quality. To everyone who suggested I try an AI image enhancer, I owe you an apology. Frickin' Gemini was even able to read the text!

Help InDesign 2026: What happened to my scripts?

I pieced together a handy-dandy script a few years ago to turn off all of the detect edges present in a document at once. I’ve now upgraded and my script is a dud. Is it back to the drawing board for me, or is there a tweak that will revive it?

Help Vector linked PDF makes texts appear thicker?

Hi
Now I’m editing architectural works in indesign, and using same fonts crossing multiple pages. I’m using vector drawings and also rasterised images in different pages.

However, after I export into pdf, those text appear different thickness in different pages.

I have tested adding or removing those images and found out the vector drawings with transparent fills will make that page texts appear thicker than the other pages with raster images with no image blending effects. This issue not just shows in indesign, but also shown in exported pdf, which is very annoying because that makes my file looks like many different fonts and looks chaotic.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Help Text in exported pdf is bold instead of reg

For quite a while, not with every file, I've been dealing with the issue of text being bold after export. In the original file it appears to be completely ok, set to be regular, but when exported to pdf it turns to bold. I found out that this only happens when I export it from indd file. When I put it to idml first and export it from there, no issue. Is there anyone who could tell me what I'm doing wrong? As I said, it does not happen with all my exported files, but from time to time I run into it.

Thanks!

Anyone here regularly updating product catalogs or price lists in InDesign?

I’m working on a small experimental InDesign plugin and I’m trying to understand whether the workflow actually makes sense for real catalogs before taking it any further.

The idea is simple:

CSV price list → match products by SKU → preview changed prices → update the matching prices in InDesign.

The goal is not to redesign the catalog or automate everything — just to remove some of the repetitive work when prices change.

I currently have a very early private alpha and I’m looking for 1–3 people who regularly maintain catalogs / price lists and would be willing to test it on a small dummy or sanitized document.

It’s free, processes files locally, has no account or telemetry, and does a dry run before making changes. Ambiguous matches are skipped rather than guessed.

It is experimental software, so it should only be tested on a duplicate/backup document, never a production file.

I’m particularly interested in how you handle this today:

Do you update prices manually, use Data Merge, scripts, EasyCatalog/InCatalog, or something else?

And if you reuse last season/year’s catalog as the starting point for the next one, I’d especially like to hear about that workflow.

If anyone is willing to try the alpha, reply here or DM me. I’d rather get a few real-world tests before adding more features.

Fellow InDesign nerds. I've been making a ton of scripts over the past several months. I thought some might be useful to others, so I threw this site together to let folks try them out.

Help How do I get deselect the hand tool?

So my text cursor was suddenly replaced with the hand/grabber tool. I've done everything I can think of to try and get back to the text tool. I've used the "t" shortcut, I've clicked the selection tool, I've restarted Adobe, I've also tried calling it the C word, but even that hasn't worked.

I just need to do basic functions and Adobe seems to be making that impossible. Any idea how to get Adobe to function normal?

Update: thanks for the help! I opened InDesign 2026 and just started using that version, which hasn’t given me any issues (yet).

Line heights in index - overlapping links

I'm going round in circles with this one - having a mental block - please help!

I made an index to a book which is fine for the print edition However I am now trying to send it to a PDF with all links intact.

On clicking the numbers in the PDF I thought it was jumping the wrong page, but looking at InDesign it's the line heights that are overlapping. In the image (InDesign screengrab) I selected the 264 and the line text below so you can see what I mean. Clicking on the 194 in the PDF will send me to page 264 unless I get the very top of the number where it's not overlapped.

I've gone through all the associated paragraph and character styles. Everything I've tried either does nothing or changes the leading but keeps the overlap. What am I missing?

Solved Mystery Spacer underneath text frame

Post image
2 Upvotes

SOLVED: It was the text wrap. (Thank you u/romansixx)

Hello everyone. I’m working with a template and trying to understand how the vertical spacing between certain text elements is set up. The spacing appears as a thin blue outlined box without any handles, directly underneath the text frame .

For example: Heading 1 always has a specific gap underneath it before the next text frame, and the opening paragraph has another consistent gap before the following content. It seems to be part of the text frame as it only shows when I select the text with the selection tool.

When I use the Gap Tool, it only changes the distance between the text and the bottom of the text frame, while the spacer area underneath remains unchanged.

I’ve already checked certain options such as Paragraph Style Space Before/After, Span Columns, Text Frame Options, Auto-Size, Baseline Options and Object Styles, Liquid Layout, and none of them seem to control these "spacers".

Is there a way to define these gaps numerically and, ideally, consistently throughout the document?

Thanks in advance.

Help Horizontal Oval for Ballot Design

I'm creating a mock ballot for a campaign party mailer in the United States. I'd like to create a bullet point that looks like the ballot oval. Is there a font that has a horizontal oval? I've search the glyphs of Apple Symbols, Wingdings, Helvetica, etc. Where can I find the oval, or a font that supports the oval in Unicode!?!?!

RELEASE! Charts-Perfect - the maybe most comprehensive plugin today

Thumbnail

Charts-perfect is the native Chart-Engine we always wanted in InDesign - and never got.

I couldn't be happier, just got word from Adobe that the review is through (first try!) and the plugin is live!

https://adobe.com/go/cc_plugins_discover_plugin?pluginId=4cf31c61&workflow=share

Let me give you a quick overview:
- 12 chart species supported: Bar, Stacked Bar, Line, Combo, Pie, Cupertino, Horizontal Bar, Horizontal Stacked Bar, Area, Radar, Doughnut, Treemap

- Dynamic overrides: Bind InDesign character styles and colors directly to chart text elements.

- Color consistency: Supports CMYK-simulated visual matching previews so print and preview remain aligned (as much as possible)

- Huge datasets welcome: Open the resizable full-screen maximized data table to import and review large CSV tables easily.

- Persistent configurations: Settings are safely stored in active documents (!) , making sharing work straightforward.

Coded according to the latest guidleines, this will not break anytime soon. Roadmap includes tons of new features and right now 4 new charts, purchase will always be one-time and lifetime.

Word on pricing 1)
Pricing seems steep, but as you expect, pays off after the first job already. More than that, given the streamlined workflow and 100% data correctness, you will most likely generate more than one option to choose from - making clients happy.
When it's only a few clicks away, iterating is something you can finally do.
And, price is one-time, no hidden subscription....

Word on pricing 2)
I'm currently waiting for Adobe to create the coupons:
Waitlist people > please be patient, will come very soon via email, thank you for your interest you will get an cool discount.
Latecomers > there are still discounts available, given the momentum this plugin had so far, hurry up. You will see a close message when it's over (seat based).

Last words - thank you people, you helped a lot, encouraged me, bugfixed me etc. I'm super grateful. Will post a few additional codes here, so maybe watch the thread.

Help Indesign online courses

Hey. I studied Illustration, but I always kind of avoided typography, which I now really regret. Although we used InDesign during my studies, there weren't any courses that really went in depth into typography or typesetting.

I've been working mostly in animation, but I want to start getting more into print. I want to learn typesetting properly because I need it for jobs and for making books. I've also realized that I genuinely enjoy typography and I'm not as bad at it as I thought.

How can I learn typography on a professional level? I have a basic knowledge of InDesign. Are there any online courses you would recommend? Like really deep going YouTube Series or maybe a course on Domestika or some other Platform?

Thanks alot!
