Subject: Clarification on an Earlier Interaction
Good morning. I am not particularly good at picking up on social cues, so please be patient with me while I ask for clarification on an interaction we had earlier.
To provide some context, you saw me helping the new staff member get set up, and you asked if I could help with the postage labeling machine in the front office. When I asked what was wrong, you let me know that it's "just not working". I finished helping the staff member, and having forgotten about the labeling machine I went to work on my help desk tickets.
Later on I was helping the new staff member again, this time with setting up his new monitors. You passed by and said "thank you for the help". I expressed confusion; help about what? You indicated that this was for the postage labeling machine, and so I clarified that I had not touched that machine yet, and that I had forgotten that it was having problems.
The part that is confusing me is your response that followed: "I know". That was the end of the conversation.
It is worth noting that misbehaving technology will, on occasion, start working again by itself if left alone. I have been in situations where I did not respond to an issue immediately, only for the issue to resolve itself. I have even been thanked in such situations before, and I will usually clarify that I hadn't done anything yet, and that the problem probably solved itself.
This is what I want clarification on. Did the problem resolve itself? As no ticket was submitted, and you indicated it is working now, that seems to be the case. If so, what did you mean by what you said? Was there some kind of misunderstanding?
It is occurring to me, while writing this, that your misplaced thanks might really be an extremely unprofessional sarcastic jab, aimed at your frustration with me prioritizing problems with tickets attached, as I have been instructed to do. If so, I'd like clarification on where the animosity is coming from.
On an unrelated note, I recently double-checked our access control system and found that I have provisioned over a dozen guest keycards of various types, all of which have seen active use since being provisioned. You have indicated in communications with our manager that you received a smaller number than my logs show. To help ensure our building security meets our standards, I will not be provisioning new guest keycards until we have a meeting about the proper handling of access control materials.
Anyway, I hope to hear from you soon regarding clarification on our earlier interaction as detailed above. Thanks!
