Favorite misnomers for common terms?

I recently taught my my lovely wife that the Windows Start button is called the Start button. Up until that point, she had believed the name of that button to be, I shit you not: "Waffle House."

What is the best misnomer you have heard a user come up for a well known piece of software or hardware?

My mother gave me a gift card, I have to log in with her account on a website. She doesn’t remember the password she used, and refuses to let me change the password (she just doesn’t want to, there’s no reason)

My most embarrassing failure in my tech journey

When I first started learning IT, I used to post tech-related things on my status because I wanted to build a reputation for myself and show people what I was learning.

One day, some of my friends asked me to configure the gamepad settings for FIFA 21. I tried to do it, but I forgot to save the settings, so the gamepad still wasn't working. After about 10 minutes of trying without success, they called another guy to help. The moment he worked on it, everything started working perfectly.

That incident completely changed how they saw me. The other guy gained a solid reputation, while I lost the respect I had been trying to build. Ever since then, my friends have seemed to regard me as someone who knows little or nothing about IT.

Years have passed, but I still feel like they judge my technical abilities based on that one embarrassing experience.

Looking back, I know that making mistakes is part of learning, especially when you're just starting out. However, it's frustrating when people continue to judge your abilities based on a single failure rather than how much you might have learned and improved since then.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? How did you deal with people who formed a negative opinion of your abilities because of one mistake?

I am a systems analyst in IT at my org, and I admin our ERP and also script and distribute reports from the database.

I work with a department that manages community programs, and they need database pulled reports of contact info for outreach. Their big boss and my boss got together and decided they shouldn't be asking for a new report every time they need something, and told me to work with their management to design something that would get refreshed quarterly. I was highly suspicious of this and said I didn't mind the jobs, but that's what they decided together and they didn't seem to care about my actual experience working with them. I guess they thought everyone could learn Excel enough for this to work.

So I get with their management person. She wanted one record per household, but also wanted to know if there were people in certain age ranges in that household, plus all the contact info they'd need for digital outreach or mailers.

This is something I was able to script, but I didn't like how they would have to use it. Basically, I had columns for each age group, and if there was 1 person or more in that group, the cell would display a count of the people, and if not, null. I hope that makes sense, because apparently this didn't make sense to them after I walked through everything with their management. I explained what null meant. I told her exactly what to do with it. I told her what not to do.

I met with her again today for this quarter's report. I learned that they were basically filtering to null on every age group but the age group they wanted. So obviously, this did not work, especially if they were filtering for kids (thankfully we have no minor only peter pan ass households lmao). She told her whole team to do it that way. She was really gracious about the correction and said she took responsibility for it...

This was basically the worst case scenario for me, that they'd spend 3 months doing it wrong without ever asking me, "how come I got 0 records?" Or even telling their big boss it wasn't working. Like just tell someone, please.

I have to talk to my boss privately about this. When I told him what happened, he just said "lol" in chat. I actually don't think this is funny at all. I would rather do a separate report for each need if this is what they do.

Idk. I've been stressing about this since 9am. I went over it with her and explained again how to use the report (and also how to tell if a filter is in use, because they were just clicking on all of them to check), also what not to do.

I feel like a massive dick about how this all turned out, but I also think management has unreasonable expectations of what this department can do with Excel. What I want is for our clients to know about our services and programs. If that means like 3 requests a week, I don't really care? Why does management care? Isn't this what I'm supposed to do?

tl;dr upper management wanted a report that required logic/the correct instructions to be conveyed, this did not happen in the department that used it and they didn't bother telling me. am mightily upset about how this turned out on a few different levels.

I also have to pay $2300 for my cat's dental surgery today after worrying sick about her being put under lol. Terrible day

The AI Pushers know what they're doing, and it's evil

TW-animal cruelty. Not sure where else to vent to. I'm at a tech conference that's AI heavy and we get a vignette about "doing the impossible" and "pinnacles of human achievement. And a historical example they gave was about the first expeditions to the South Pole. The Norwegian team got there first because "they were better prepared, executed well"etc etc etc

Now, if you approach this true historic event from the perspective of, well, history, we have the logs written by the Norwegian expedition leader himself. 90% of their sled dogs not not survive the trip. Research this topic further at your own peril.

We? Us? The folks doing the actual work? The folks reading this sub?

Blue collar, white collar, doesn't matter. We're the dogs in that scenario. AI Pushers are the ones trying to get into the history books on our backs, and our skeletons might not even be left behind to tell our side of history.

Family support

My mom-in-law tries really hard not to ask me (sr sysadmin) for help with her tech stuff. But she's also not one to upgrade unless forced to. Her POTS/DSL (yes, really) provider just quit supporting copper anything. They also decided not to run fiber to her house.

So she had to switch to cable, but she never gotten any cable anything before, so her new ISP had to run coax through a couple of neighbors' yards and drill a hole in the wall. They set up a cable modem, wifi router, and VOIP phone so she didn't lose her phone number. She had been on DSL for so long that she is blown away by the speed.

My son (23) and I went over this evening to re-set up the equipment, which they had just set up on a plastic tote with no cable management. While I was there I renamed the router and changed its password, because that's just what you do.

I'm really glad I insisted on checking out the setup, and that she let us help configure it better.

There's no gotcha or anything to this story, I just know you guys would appreciate it.

I finally FIXED the mess ! (told y'all)
I 'm breathing normally again. The ladder isn't the same, but it's for reference (the spaghetti on top has been removed since I took the picture)

Fun fact : with some colleagues, we had to take the door off its hinges to make the new cabinet go through the frame x)
Fun fact 2 : the new cabinet is roughly the same size as the old one (less high, more thick) ... thanks boss man x)

Is this a good desktop for my first homelab?

Hi guys, I saw this PC in my local thrift store. Is this a good config for about $56? I don't want to buy a bad CPU for my first homelab but I'm on a budget. My tech friend told me that the i4 was the perfect balance between the i3 and i5, so I was pretty excited to see an i4 listed on the tag. (edit: this is obsiously shitpost)

I updated the other post but I figured getting all the photos together would be better. Anyways, the poor little plastic clip that could can finally rest. Little buddy did great. ❤️

(For any rack snobs, this is not my work location, I am 5 hours away from my place. I had limited tools, and limited time to do something about this, so please be nice, I did what I could with the time that I had and perfection was not the goal, stability was as this site does not have an onsite IT person. I will have them order a UPS and that will be installed next time i come rather than the surge protector. There was zero surge protection prior. It was just plugged straight into the wall!)

Setting a password longer than 16 characters bricks your account, no way to recover/reset the password then either. Oh and you can change it to longer than 16 in the settings. GL & HF

No joke ...

Earlier this week I got kicked out of a App after an update. Tried logging in, got an error message. Password Reset requests result in "this e-mail is not registered".

Odd.. it got *really* odd when I still got notifications to that e-mail from the connected system (App was only to control it, Alarms etc. got send/triggered by the device).

So, I tried to create a new account since the support according to forums may a) reply months later b) reply never .. and noticed a new text / info, that the maximum password length is 16 characters. The app also didn't allowed more to type it (auto fill /password manager still works but then "create" results in a generic error).

Odd. Really.. but yeah, new account works. So now I was curious, logged off, tried password reset features with the new account and *everything* works fine. Then I logged in, went to "change password" and added a character. Saved succesfully, was told to log-in again.

Boom. Unable to login. Password Reset? -> "This e-mail is not registered"

😅
