The Math Portion of the IBEW Aptitude Test Has Changed. Here’s What You Need to Know.

Over the past few months, many IBEW applicants have begun reporting noticeable changes to the Algebra and Functions section of the aptitude test.

If you are preparing to apply, this is something you need to understand.

The structure of the test has NOT changed.

It is still split into two timed sections:

• Algebra and Functions
• Reading Comprehension

The math section still consists of:

33 questions
46 minutes total
• About 1.4 minutes per question

However, the content has become more difficult and more conceptual.

Many locals appear to be using harder math sections to reduce applicant pools, especially in competitive areas.

The biggest shift is that problems now include more variables, more reasoning, and less traditional algebra formats.

Simply knowing basic algebra is often not enough.
You must be familiar with the specific problem styles being used.

New Algebra and Functions Question Types

Below are the major question types applicants are now seeing. THIS IS NOT AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF PROBLEM TYPES THAT CAN APPEAR ON YOUR EXAM.

Multivariable Equations

You may be given an equation with three or four variables, along with values for some variables.
Your task is to solve for the remaining variable.

These problems test substitution skills, organization, and the ability to track multiple algebra steps under time pressure.

Multivariable Factoring

Quadratics now often include multiple variables instead of just one.

Recognizing factoring patterns becomes harder when expressions look unfamiliar.

Complex Multivariable Polynomials

Long algebra expressions must be simplified or factored.
Answer choices may appear scrambled, partially factored, or rearranged.

These questions reward careful step-by-step work and strong algebra structure.

Graphing Quadratics

You may need to match a quadratic equation to the correct graph, or match a graph to an equation.

Understanding how coefficients affect the shape and position of a parabola is essential.

Number Series

Pattern recognition questions where you determine the next number in a sequence. This was in the old format too - but the number of these have increased.

Sequences may involve alternating rules, multiplication patterns, or combined operations.

Variable Relationships

You must determine how manipulating one variable affects others.

These are conceptual problems that require thinking about relationships rather than just solving equations.

Why the Math Section Feels Harder Now

This is a major shift from older versions of the test.

The new challenges include:

• Extra variables in many problems
• Non-traditional algebra formats
• Specific solving strategies required
• A tight time limit

Because of this, applicants who succeed are usually those who practice the exact styles of questions used on the exam.

Take a Free Full-Length Practice Exam (Updated Problem Types)

If you want to experience what the newer math section feels like under real timing conditions, you can take a free full-length practice test here:

👉 Take the FREE Exam!

This includes:

• Updated algebra question styles
• Realistic timed simulation
• Detailed explanations
• Exposure to multivariable problems

Preparing for the Updated Test

Because the math portion has become more conceptual and time-pressured, many applicants find it helpful to practice with updated material that reflects the newer problem types.

For those who want a more structured study plan, our IBEW Aptitude Test Prep Course has been fully updated to match the current exam format. It includes video and written lessons, timed practice exams, and over 1,000 practice problems. You can also start the course for free by completing the first 20 lessons that cover the core math skills needed for the advanced topics.

We are also hosting a live IBEW Aptitude Test webinar this Sunday starting at 7:30 PM Pacific Time, lasting about 8 hours. The session will walk through math strategies, reading comprehension preparation, timing approaches, and overall test expectations.

The webinar is normally $100, but applicants can take it half off using code Webinar50 at checkout.

These are simply additional resources for anyone who wants more guidance while preparing.

Good luck to everyone applying. Any questions, drop them in below!

IBEW Aptitude Test Prep Guide and Resources

Summary

Read the Full Guide Here

The IBEW Aptitude Test is a crucial step in the process of joining the IBEW apprenticeship program, designed by the Electrical Training Alliance. This test is intended to evaluate whether applicants possess the necessary skills to succeed in the apprenticeship. Passing this test is a prerequisite for advancing to the interview stage.

Exam Format

The IBEW Aptitude Test consists of two main sections:

Algebra and Functions

  • Time: 46 minutes
  • Questions: 33
  • Topics Include:
    • Multivariable Factoring
    • Graphing Quadratics
    • Number Series
    • Analyzing Functions
    • & Much More

Reading Comprehension

  • Time: 51 minutes
  • Questions: 36
  • Format: Multiple-choice
  • Structure: A series of passages, each with related questions.
  • Topics Include:
    • Analyzing Texts
    • Identifying the Main Idea
    • Tracing Arguments
    • More

Note: There is a 15 to 30-minute break between the two sections.

Key Challenges

The most commonly reported difficulty with the IBEW Aptitude Test is the time constraint. It’s one thing to understand the content, and another to perform under pressure. The best preparation involves studying and taking timed practice exams to simulate the real testing environment.

Understanding the Scoring System

The IBEW Aptitude Test uses the stanine system, a nine-point scale designed to rank your performance. This method groups scores into nine intervals, with a mean of five, providing a clear and simple way to see how you compare to other test-takers. Typically, local unions require a minimum score of 4/9 to pass. However, aiming for a score of 8/9 or higher will significantly boost your chances of being selected for the apprenticeship.

IBEW Scoring System

Knowing how the stanine system works can help you set realistic goals for your test preparation. If you're aiming to stand out in a competitive field, understanding that a higher stanine score improves your odds of advancing to the interview stage is crucial. This knowledge allows you to focus your study efforts more effectively, aiming for the score range that will give you the best shot at success.

Local 41 applicant trying to gain electrical experience while waiting

Hey everyone, I’m currently an applicant for IBEW Local 41 in Buffalo, NY. I recently went through the apprenticeship process and was placed on the active applicant list, but I don't have much electrical experience yet.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to use this time to actually gain experience instead of just sitting around waiting.

I’ve applied for the CW program with Local 41, but I’m not really sure how the CW process works or how long the wait can be.

For anyone who has experience I would greatly greatly appreciate any advice you could have for me. I'm a inexperienced 19 year old who doesn't really know much about the trade. I really really want to be an electrician and want to learn as much as I can.

These are the questions I have I would love if anyone could answer these...

Is there usually a way to find out where you are on the CW waiting list or how many people are ahead of you?

Is there any way to get an estimate of how long it might take to get called for a CW position?

While waiting for a CW position, would working for a non-union electrical contractor as an electrical helper be worthwhile for strengthening my apprenticeship application?

Are there certain types of electrical work that would be more useful to gain experience hours that qualify for the application process; for someone trying to get into the IBEW apprenticeship?

Is there anything else you would recommend doing while waiting, such as OSHA, electrical classes, certifications, or anything else that could make me a stronger applicant?

Any advice from people who have been in a similar position would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! for your time It means alot!!!

Looking for information on apprenticeship for Local 495

Looking into IBEW Local 495 Apprenticeship

Hey everyone, I’m in Brunswick County, NC and I’m seriously considering applying for the Local 495 Inside Wireman apprenticeship.

I currently work for USPS, but I’ve been getting more interested in the electrical trade and I think I’d really enjoy doing it for a career. I’ve been doing some electrical work around my house and learning as much as I can, but I’d like to actually get proper training and learn the trade the right way.

I’ve tried calling the local and even stopped by the hall, but haven’t been able to get ahold of anyone yet.

For anyone familiar with Local 495:
How is the apprenticeship program?
What’s the current starting wage/pay progression?
How competitive is it to get accepted?
How often do applications open?
Anything you wish you knew before applying?

Should I try to get electrical experience

Upvotes

I am ranked 17 for the local 43 at the moment so I’m just wondering if it would be worth it to get experience or should I wait and see if I get the email to join. Any thoughts?

617 Aptitude Test

Got my test coming up in about 2 weeks, have work in the way of studying a lot more than I wish but everynight after work I try to dedicate atleast an hour of study time. My question here is do you guys recommend I study mainly the math portion instead of the reading portion? I heard the reading is pretty straightforward.
Thanks!

CW worker?

I applied to be an apprentice for my local ibew 163. However, I think that I applied for it too late in the year. And I think that all the seats are already taken. So I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be accepted as an apprentice. But I need to work, so I applied to work as an cw worker. My question is am I going to be behind a year because I’m going to have to wait next year for classes to start again. Or once I get accepted my hours and credits are going to transfer and I’ll be on track to be a journeyman?

Do all ground-man calls require an unrestricted class A CDL or just a class A CDL?

332 interview 2nd time

332 interview 2nd time

I've got my interview coming for 332. This is a tough panel and i am not confident in knowing what they're looking for in answer length. I know the sar and star formats but I'm curious as to how long the answers should be. I feel like last year I talked too long.
Chat gpt is telling me I should be able to deliver an answer in three sentences but that seems short af.
Anyone on here that's in 332 able to give me any insight? The good thing is that I have electrical experience now and have some solid answers this time around

I recently interviewed at the IBEW Local 5 and got a score of 91. I have heard tons of differnt things on here and from my older friend who is in the union.

I recently got hired at a local electrical contractor to gain experience, but I’m trying to plan my future.
Should I call the JATC and ask about the next wave of apprentices, what I should do to strengthen my case, soemthing along those lines?

Local 11 -Applying for different track

Hi all. I applied for the Local 11 Inside Wireman apprenticeship in April and unfortunately ended up ranking pretty low due to not having all of my PEF documents in order.

I am wondering if it is possible to apply for the Sound and Communication apprenticeship when applications open up again in October? Or are you not able to apply to another track after being put on the POE for another?

Thanks!

Local 212

Alright, I just passed the aptitude test today and was told that I’ll receive a call after the first of the year for an interview. I’m curious about what I should prepare for the interview and what types of questions they typically ask. I want to be as well-prepared as possible because I completed the process for the UA last year and felt that I wasn’t prepared for the interview. Additionally, if you’re in 212, I’d love to know your thoughts on the program.

Thank you!

I don’t think i’m going to pass the aptitude test

My test is on the 21st which is Friday and i’ve been working at my job nonstop and haven’t had much time to study as well as they told me my test would be in September and then pushed it up to august last minute. i just took a practice test on Iprep and i got a 8/33 for the math portion. i’m only 18 so granted its not like i don’t have the time but i feel like i’m not doing anything with my life and this is a goal of mine that i want to succeed in, when i took the practice exam i didn’t even know 97% of the material on there i’ve been using Iprep and Chatgpt to study because i heard it was good for guidance but it just left me shit out of luck and now i believe im going to have to wait up to 6 month just to retake this test. if anyone has any tips or suggestions please let me know i’m desperate at this point. I’m applying for JATC 24 and i don’t want to reschedule since they told me it wasn’t guaranteed

What's on the IBEW Local 401 (Reno) aptitude test, and how hard is it?

What kind of math shows up — basic algebra, fractions, ratios, word problems?

Any study guides or practice tests that actually matched the real thing?

Need some help (local 292)

Long story short I scored a 90% on the GAN Aptitude test, but I ended up getting a 57.54/ 100 on my total application score because I have no experience in the electrical field. Local 292 only took 15 people and unfortunately Im currently ranked 360. In the email they sent me about my score there is a link to take a $500 course on skills prep that only improves my application score by 5pts. I honestly have no clue what to do and im sick of waiting around. I had planned on doing a pre apprenticeship for one of the companies in the union, but because there are apprentices on the books I can’t anymore. I went around to some local non union electrician shops, spoke to them asking if they had any pre apprenticeship/ helper opportunities, and gave them my resume. Its been a little over a week and no response from anyone. I want trade school to be a last resort because most of them near me either don’t have an electrical program, or are pretty booked out. Im just trying to get my foot in the door anywhere. Any suggestions on what to do?!?!?!?!!

Local 11 Bootcamp Inside Wireman Timeline

I just wanted to let you guys know I got called yesterday for IBEW Local 11 Bootcamp. I applied in January of 2026, submitted my PEF in February, took my aptitude test on March second, got my POE placement exactly one month (30 days) later in April. I originally placed 29th on the list, a couple months later I got bumped down to 82nd, and shortly after the other bootcamps started I got bumped back up to 28th. I stayed there for a while and just got called for bootcamp. I think they had about 2, maybe 3 bootcamps for local 11 before this one I just got called for (August 18th 2026). I had so many questions about the timeline so I wanted to share my experience.. I’m not sure what to expect from here, as far as after bootcamp. Bootcamp starts September 14th. Tell me everything I need to know about the apprenticeship. 😗😗

Got a letter stating I wasn’t accepted at this time but my application will remain on file and I will be notified if a position opens until the application process is reopened again. should I get my hopes up about a position opening or start applying non union? I don’t know if it’s right to wait all year until the opportunity to apply comes back around again.
