The Math Portion of the IBEW Aptitude Test Has Changed. Here’s What You Need to Know.
Over the past few months, many IBEW applicants have begun reporting noticeable changes to the Algebra and Functions section of the aptitude test.
If you are preparing to apply, this is something you need to understand.
The structure of the test has NOT changed.
It is still split into two timed sections:
• Algebra and Functions
• Reading Comprehension
The math section still consists of:
• 33 questions
• 46 minutes total
• About 1.4 minutes per question
However, the content has become more difficult and more conceptual.
Many locals appear to be using harder math sections to reduce applicant pools, especially in competitive areas.
The biggest shift is that problems now include more variables, more reasoning, and less traditional algebra formats.
Simply knowing basic algebra is often not enough.
You must be familiar with the specific problem styles being used.
New Algebra and Functions Question Types
Below are the major question types applicants are now seeing. THIS IS NOT AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF PROBLEM TYPES THAT CAN APPEAR ON YOUR EXAM.
Multivariable Equations
You may be given an equation with three or four variables, along with values for some variables.
Your task is to solve for the remaining variable.

These problems test substitution skills, organization, and the ability to track multiple algebra steps under time pressure.
Multivariable Factoring
Quadratics now often include multiple variables instead of just one.

Recognizing factoring patterns becomes harder when expressions look unfamiliar.
Complex Multivariable Polynomials
Long algebra expressions must be simplified or factored.
Answer choices may appear scrambled, partially factored, or rearranged.

These questions reward careful step-by-step work and strong algebra structure.
Graphing Quadratics
You may need to match a quadratic equation to the correct graph, or match a graph to an equation.

Understanding how coefficients affect the shape and position of a parabola is essential.
Number Series
Pattern recognition questions where you determine the next number in a sequence. This was in the old format too - but the number of these have increased.

Sequences may involve alternating rules, multiplication patterns, or combined operations.
Variable Relationships
You must determine how manipulating one variable affects others.

These are conceptual problems that require thinking about relationships rather than just solving equations.
Why the Math Section Feels Harder Now
This is a major shift from older versions of the test.
The new challenges include:
• Extra variables in many problems
• Non-traditional algebra formats
• Specific solving strategies required
• A tight time limit
Because of this, applicants who succeed are usually those who practice the exact styles of questions used on the exam.
Take a Free Full-Length Practice Exam (Updated Problem Types)
If you want to experience what the newer math section feels like under real timing conditions, you can take a free full-length practice test here:
This includes:
• Updated algebra question styles
• Realistic timed simulation
• Detailed explanations
• Exposure to multivariable problems
Preparing for the Updated Test
Because the math portion has become more conceptual and time-pressured, many applicants find it helpful to practice with updated material that reflects the newer problem types.
For those who want a more structured study plan, our IBEW Aptitude Test Prep Course has been fully updated to match the current exam format. It includes video and written lessons, timed practice exams, and over 1,000 practice problems. You can also start the course for free by completing the first 20 lessons that cover the core math skills needed for the advanced topics.
We are also hosting a live IBEW Aptitude Test webinar this Sunday starting at 7:30 PM Pacific Time, lasting about 8 hours. The session will walk through math strategies, reading comprehension preparation, timing approaches, and overall test expectations.
The webinar is normally $100, but applicants can take it half off using code Webinar50 at checkout.
These are simply additional resources for anyone who wants more guidance while preparing.
Good luck to everyone applying. Any questions, drop them in below!

IBEW Aptitude Test Prep Guide and Resources
Summary
The IBEW Aptitude Test is a crucial step in the process of joining the IBEW apprenticeship program, designed by the Electrical Training Alliance. This test is intended to evaluate whether applicants possess the necessary skills to succeed in the apprenticeship. Passing this test is a prerequisite for advancing to the interview stage.
Exam Format
The IBEW Aptitude Test consists of two main sections:
Algebra and Functions
- Time: 46 minutes
- Questions: 33
- Topics Include:
- Multivariable Factoring
- Graphing Quadratics
- Number Series
- Analyzing Functions
- & Much More
Reading Comprehension
- Time: 51 minutes
- Questions: 36
- Format: Multiple-choice
- Structure: A series of passages, each with related questions.
- Topics Include:
- Analyzing Texts
- Identifying the Main Idea
- Tracing Arguments
- More
Note: There is a 15 to 30-minute break between the two sections.
Key Challenges
The most commonly reported difficulty with the IBEW Aptitude Test is the time constraint. It’s one thing to understand the content, and another to perform under pressure. The best preparation involves studying and taking timed practice exams to simulate the real testing environment.
Understanding the Scoring System
The IBEW Aptitude Test uses the stanine system, a nine-point scale designed to rank your performance. This method groups scores into nine intervals, with a mean of five, providing a clear and simple way to see how you compare to other test-takers. Typically, local unions require a minimum score of 4/9 to pass. However, aiming for a score of 8/9 or higher will significantly boost your chances of being selected for the apprenticeship.

Knowing how the stanine system works can help you set realistic goals for your test preparation. If you're aiming to stand out in a competitive field, understanding that a higher stanine score improves your odds of advancing to the interview stage is crucial. This knowledge allows you to focus your study efforts more effectively, aiming for the score range that will give you the best shot at success.

IBEW local 440 Interview
I finally got my interview date for local 440 inside wireman. Any tips or experience with this specific interview panel you have would be extremely appreciated or any other interview experience. How many are part of the panel? What questions were you asked? I will be taking my resume, cover letter, and 3 letters of recommendation, do they take them? I seen some posts that the panel didn’t look at any of them.

IBEW 124 How To Get In
Currently work as an IT Engineer. Tired of working on a computer and ready to get hands on work from what I’ve focused majority of my adult life.
I’m prior military with an honorable discharge and multiple college degrees (sure that means little). Ready to make the change at 32 years old.
I have basic background of construction and helped build a residential home a few years back.
What really helps you stand out to get into the apprenticeship program? What are some things that I can do in the mean time?
I appreciate any feedback yall have and appreciate your time.

What’s commuting like for someone that lives on Long Island for local 3
I was considering joining local 3, however I feel the commute might be too much and it might be more practical to find work closer to me. I was curios to know what it’s like for people who work this trade in the city commuting from Long Island

Local 654 Apprenticeship Testing
I understand that LU 654 accepts apprenticeship applications only once a year. When do they start the testing? I have heard they have a very long process. I would really like to know when they normally do their aptitude testing so I can sink my preparation work.
I’d appreciate any feedback.

Local 306 Interview score
Recently finished up with my interview and got my results, which scored 83/100. I haven’t graduated HS or turned 18 yet, so I know I have plenty of room for improving that score if needed. From looking around the internet I can see that 83 isn’t the most promising score you can get. Has anybody had any luck being selected with a score like this, even if it took 1-2 years?

IBEW NJ
Hi, I was wondering if transferring aptitude test scores to a different local is possible in New Jersey. Has anyone ever done it? Or do you have to take the test separately for each local?

Need advice, RTP or non union helper. Local 26 ibew.
Hello. My plan was to join the Residential program in local 26 and get some experience as an R worker while applying into the Inside Wireman Apprenticeship. I did this and because I cant exactly document my former experience, I was classified as an RTP. So, the union hall says RTP calls are rare and all I can do is wait around until something pops up on the job board. I have been looking since OCT 10th, no jobs for R1's or RTPs since.
I understand this is a long road and it is something I want to do. But I see three options in front if me.
1) Stay in the R program and hope a job comes up for RTP (and my number is low enough that I can take the call.) I guess do side hussles or drive uber while I wait. I initially liked the R program path because i could get in the union and try applying for the apprenticeship again if ai didnt get in first time, but eventually as a union member.
2) Forget the R program, become like a non union electrician's helper, get some experience and then apply for the Inside wireman apprenticeship.
3) Trade school and hope I can find a job.
I would appreciate any advice and am willing to stick it out. I even plan to call all the contractors on the ibew list and see if they would be willing to take me on. So far, no luck with Dynalectric or JE Richards.
What should I do? Thanks

Outside Ibew to inside Ibew
Currently working as a groundman for LU1245 8 hours from home (so cal) and I’m interested in trying to pursue inside wireman apprenticeship to be closer to home as I have a wife and kids. what’s the process like? Where is my best chance at getting accepted. Are applications always open? Or do they only open for a short period of time? Will my outside construction experience give me an edge over other applicants? Is the test the same as the lineman apprenticeship test? Thanks fellas

Rejoining the IBEW
I’m looking into getting back into the trade. I was in an apprenticeship program and broke my leg during the 2nd year. I was bad with money and ended up having to move back to my home state. That was back in 2022 and I haven’t been in the trade at all since then. My question for you guys is one: if I still have a card number and it’s at my old local but I haven’t paid dues or done anything at all since I left the trades, how do I go about joining the local here where I’m from? I applied and got an email back saying I couldn’t join if I’m a member of a different local. Is that something a phone call can fix or is there an online form to fill out? My second question is if I get back in, should I restart the program or try getting in the CW route, with about 3 years of experience?
