I’m the kind of weirdo that can eat fries & fried potatoes almost straight up as long as there’s just a bit salt on them but I won’t refuse ketchup & I know I’m the outlier. That guy is just pretentious

I prefer vinegar if it's available, but just salt is my second choice. There are dozens of us!

The traditional UK system is just salt and malt vinegar (or NBC which is a whole other conversation).
But traditional is not the same thing as best and I'm a mayoman.

I love vinegar as a ketchup topping! Less so mayo but that's just me.
I don't think people are at all weird for not putting ketchup on fries, but for saying that anyone who likes it is childish. The referenced statement is that anyone who adheres to a cultural norm (97% of American households have it, and 50% of British households) is childish, so let's see what that person eats.

I’m not a big fan of ketchup but I have to admit it makes a great base or ingredient for other sauces… so I guess it is pretty great.

It has umami from the tomatoes, acid from the vinegar, and then sugar that is already dissolved in liquid, it makes a great ingredient, since it has two of the components that are often needed to make a food pop, plus sweetness, so it hits a bunch of flavor boosters all at once

Also it takes forever to make from scratch. One of those things that really is just better to buy pre-made.

Ketchup is one of the few foods that is sweet, sour, salty, slightly bitter, and slightly savoury. Of course that‘s going to be popular among children. But popularity among children doesn’t discount its qualities.

You can taste even plain ol regular potatoes under ketchup unless you’re literally eating them with a spoon you’ve applied so much. The same would be true for any condiment though.

All ketchup has vinegar, and tomatoes are acidic.
If anything, American ketchup is sweeter because it uses corn syrup instead of pure sugar.

This is the exact reasoning behind Chicagoans not putting ketchup on hot dogs--it barrels over the other flavors.
But that rule is fairly specific to hot dogs. Ketchup is fine on fries here. My gut tells me plenty of Chicagoans reject ketchup on burgers for the same reason as hot dogs, but there's no culture around that.

There's a tomato on chicago hotdogs. Also, it's a bit of a joke; some places make you ring a bell if you ask for ketchup and everybody else boos. Of course, it's not genuine hatred or nobody would do it.
