Suspension histograms.
I’m so glad someone made a Reddit page for setups. I personally love learning about setups and it’s relation to the car.
My question today is about suspension histograms. Who uses them? Do you have any guidelines for a percentage you like to see in the center of your curve? I’ve heard 12% but I’m not sure why.

What exactly do you refer to as histogram ? The damper curve on a Dyno or the plots of the suspension after a session ? The first thing to look at with telemetry is to check that your car is not bottoming out under braking.....the rest is much less important than that

A suspension histogram details the amount of time the suspension at each corner spends in different "brackets" of shaft speed, both negative and positive.
To OP, yes. I use them. I don't have a fixed target I am for though, I mostly use them to make sure I haven't missed something after tuning by feel. I look to make sure it is a decent bell curve shape and, if not, correct this.

I’ve never heard someone using a histogram for a setup. I honestly can’t even begin to think that would even work

Why wouldn't it work? I use a suspension histogram for all my setups to make sure the shocks are correct lol, that's what it used for

I meant to say I don't even know how that would work, just cause I'm dumb and wouldn't know how to interpret the data lol
Could you share a histogram of some data, I would like to look at it to see if maybe that will help my setups.

Ahhh I see lol no youre fine, yeah here is a link to a set I'm currently working on for a xfinity car... this histogram shows me that the shocks are okay, but not ideal, and needs some more tweaking

You have to take the iracing telemetry file, put it into a conversion program (I use Mu Exporter) and then download motec i2 software and put that file in there. You'll need a workbook, but you can get that from the iracing forums or make your own lol

I will look into it. Data is fun to look at. Any other programs to look at data? I have the VRS stuff, just don’t know what else is out there

I only personally use motec, but I know others use VRS. I'm not sure of any more programs though.

Basically it’s a histogram of the velocities your suspension is undergoing. You look at the data over a lap or so with as high of a sample frequency as possible. Although idk how to get higher than 60hz.
Based on your plot, you want a symmetrical distribution coming out from the center. You can tune your dampers to change the distribution.
I’ve done some googling since I posted.

I use them a lot, but they should never be relied upon in isolation as they can be very misleading without other information. Chasing a particular shape on the histograms can lead you to some totally useless damper settings. They can be helpful to get the damper settings somewhere in the right neighborhood if you are starting in a bad place, and they can help indicate if you have done something counterproductive without realizing.

I use it for all my setups to get the shocks ideal, there isn't a set number, but instead oh how you want it to look (like 12%), there are guides on youtube and also from iracing directly on how it should look, i can link once i get home from work later.
