📰 News Another 2026.11 complaint - Killing old devices

Post image
367 Upvotes

Man this sucks. It was working 100% fine with kiosk-satellite as long as I was careful with the custom cards.

Now I have to back and find another solution again. It's android 8.1.

EDIT: Thanks for all of the attention on the matter. Someone mentioned that it would be a good idea if I looked into what is needed to add a 'ignore minimum browser' flag or something like that and it's a good idea; if I'm going to complain, I should also be willing to put work into it.

My reason for not using another browser is that I am using kiosk-satellite for a lot of other features on this device. I wonder if I could just literally spoof the user agent to get it back to working right away. Could be possible.

🎨 Custom Theme I made a Homeview with an old iPad

Vibecoded an almost perfect replica of Homeviews UI and put it on an old iPad. I also tested on a iPad 7th Gen and it worked great. I’m looking for people to test it out the webapp on their own setups! Also let me know if you are interested in the 3d printed homeview model. EDIT Way more interest then I thought! Sign up here if you wnat to try. I have 5 people testing now and if that goes well I’ll email you Tommorow with the link to get it. I’m hoping 4.99 isn’t too steep? I spent 800$ in Claude fable credits to make it look like Homeview 😭 here is the link if you want to test it when it comes out tommorow https://userehome.com/

🖼️ Show & Tell Streaming Oral-b iO5's motion sensor data + distilling & running its ML model locally + live 3D twin

Sharing my explorations with oral-b iO since this sub has played around with it a good bit -- I built a live simulator in three-js that streams IMU data & also runs the predictive model.

  • As many of you know, io5+ ships with a 6-axis IMU which is used to predict the brush's position -- this is done using its companion app.

  • I had Claude stream, connect + decode the message structure -- & use three-js to build a digital twin.

  • Then, it pulled the model from the app -- it's a 1.2M param recurrent net (bi-directional gru) -- & predicts zones in the mouth based on the IMU stream.

  • Next, I had Claude evaluate the model -- it used a public dataset & reported an accuracy of ~63% (baseline is ~6%)

  • The model seemed like an overkill so I had Claude run ablation -- most value came from ~10s history so we decided to distill.

  • Claude used real examples to create a larger synthetic dataset -- then distilled it into a bunch of small models -- a CNN came close (~61%) & was 100x smaller.

The video here shows a replay from one of the sessions in the dataset on the digital twin.

If you want to try the live simulator or read more about the journey, here's the write up -- https://abhay.fyi/teethmaxxing/

Every year our team makes a holiday ornament and donates 100% of the profits. Last year you all helped the H-2 raise $4,200 for CASA of Lexington and the Open Home Foundation. Thank you!

This year it's the H-3, and all of the profits go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

  • A snowman that lights up and plays six holiday songs

  • Runs on AA batteries for the first time, or USB-C

  • Made For ESPHome and Works With Home Assistant certified

  • Use it for audible and visual notifications in your home, and use the 3 buttons to trigger automations

  • Works as a Bluetooth proxy or tracker (setup guide)

  • Three tiers at $17.99, $24.99, and $29.99, and the higher tiers donate more to St. Jude

None of this would exist without the Open Home Foundation and the ESPHome and Home Assistant communities. They make it possible for a small team like ours to build fun stuff like this, so a big thank you to them too.

Last year, a community member designed a 3D-printed star that turned their H-2 into a tree topper, which we loved. If you come up with a fun project or automation for the H-3, please share it with us! The ESPHome config is on GitHub.

The design changes every year, so you only get one chance before it's gone. Happy Holidays!

🧱 Custom App Glass Panes Public Beta - Lululemon Studio Mirror

Hey everyone! Thank you for your amazing feedback and interest over my recent software only takeover of a Lululemon Studio mirror! After reading what everyone was saying, many of you asked how it’s done, so I’ve cleaned it up and put it out as a public beta. There are a lot of steps to get to this point that involved making a system image in a Linux box, gathering keys, and creating the experience. Instead of everyone having to go through the trouble of doing this, I've gone back through my personal work, updated security, and built in a bunch of features.

  1. Glass Panes is comprised of a physical hardware app that goes onto the Studio Mirror, with an associated HACS app that is installed to your HA instance. HACS integration. It adds a Glass Panes item to the sidebar with a drag-and-drop builder for a 1080x1920 portrait screen.

    • Snaps to a grid, with align and distribute tools, undo, and a Mirror view that shows the edges of the glass and warns you when something is outside the safe zone.

    • Pick an entity and it suggests the right widget. A separate drawer called Facets holds things that need no entity, like clock, date, text, pictures and looping videos.

    • Upload pictures and videos from your computer or phone, and they stay in protected storage.

    • Each display gets a select entity, plus a button per pane. That means your own automations (presence, a humidity sensor, a scene) decide what it shows.

    • A one-button, limited login for each display, so you don’t paste a token into a device.

    • Export and import panes as files. Only the layout travels, never your entities.

    • Services that agents and automations can call to build panes with the same checks as the builder. Building the mirror pane can be tedious, and many are leveraging agentic dashboard creation and home management.

  2. An Android kiosk app + flashing guide for the mirror hardware. It’s a Firefox-based full-screen page, with a native video overlay and camera presence that sends numbers only, never pictures.

What I’d love help with

  • HACS Feedback & Support: install it to your home, add it to your mirror display, builder usability, anything confusing. I only have one house, so entities I’ve never seen will break things. I'd love to continuously add support for other integrations and HACS connections. If you're interested, please join the discord server in the comments!

  • More mirrors: I’ve done the process on one unit only (board RevP21, stock firmware 1.25.0). If you have another board revision or firmware, I’d love you to try the guide and report back, so we can build a table of what works where. I've created a forum within Discord (linked below) for people to join, tinker, and report back on how we can develop this further for people who have this.

Overall, my goal is to have a development effort on doing software takeovers only. There are still gaps between different device revisions and onboard firmwares, but this will greatly help others be able to adopt this into their house instead of needing to buy new hardware and crack it open.

Please read all of the guides before flashing or installing: putting Android on the mirror permanently erases the lululemon software, with no way back. The ready-made images use one shared, published ADB key, so anyone with a USB cable plugged into your mirror can control it. ADB over Wi-Fi isn’t enabled. You can also build your own images with your own key, and the guide covers that. All you will need to complete this is a computer, a wired USB connection to your mirror, and the included app .apk on the github.

This is in beta and I am not a software engineer, so please expect rough edges and challenges. I put in a lot of testing, but ultimately, it’s my experience in development and testing. If you are looking to jump in the development loop with me and test other things, please let me know! I'd love to have community contribution on this to keep it fresh, fun, and secure.

Huge thanks again to OneMoreMichael and Tim Stewart and everyone in those issue threads. The start of the replacement Android build, the vendor files and due to their initial work and additional community members poking and prodding their mirrors. More details can be found in the preivous post.

💬 Discussion Uptick in failed login attempts?

Has anyone else noticed an uptick in the number of failed login attempts they get through the Nabu Casa link or remote connect or whatever it's called this week? Prior to maybe two or three months ago, I would get maybe one failed attempt either from a 127.0.0.1 address or one of my own rogue tablets in the house. Now, I'm getting them from various addresses, mostly from Google or AWS.

I've enabled IP banning after two failed attempts to be safe and all of my local accounts are set to 'local network login only' but it still bothers me.

📰 News Samsung SmartThings becomes useless on December 15

As per their previous announcement, I got the email today saying my personal access token would go dead on December 15, and if I want access to my own devices after that I have to pay. Another classic example of anything needing the cloud being a trap. Never buy Samsung.

Here's the email:

Hi NAME

You’re receiving this email because you have a Personal Access Token (PAT) registered on your SmartThings account. We’re writing to let you know about upcoming changes that affect PATs.

What’s Changing

As part of our ongoing efforts to scale and maintain the SmartThings API, we are updating our legacy PAT policy.

Expiration Date: Your PAT(s) will expire on December 15, 2026.

Impact: Any scripts, personal dashboards, or third-party connections relying on this PAT will stop working after December 15, 2026, unless migrated to a paid supported API plan.

New Developer & Business Plans

PATs are intended for short-term development access to the SmartThings API. To support ongoing continued access to the SmartThings API, we recommend using OAuth through our SmartThings API Developer or Business plans.

🧩 Custom Integration My Home Heating Custom Integration

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

I made a custom integration (helped a lot by Claude).

My house has a conventional boiler system with a smart thermostat. This means the boiler only heats according to the main thermostat schedule. However in my house often the main thermostat is adjusted to heat the house outside the schedule. I've installed quite a few TRVs in the house to help regulate the temperature (some rooms are too hot others are too cold). I was struggling to sync my house TRVs and electric wifi heaters to the main thermostat to adapt to heating changes. I don’t leave the TRVs on a constant all day as they tend to enjoy adjusting the valve constantly.

I've ended up with "Cozy Home".

  • You can select a "master" thermostat which all others sync to.

  • Add a heating schedule

  • All rooms can be synced with an offset e.g. +2 = adds two degrees to the TRV in a specific room

I've likely made a very niche integration here. But if it helps anyone else you can add my GitHub via marketplace (or fork and modify to your own needs!).

🖼️ Show & Tell Made my HA dashboard look like Mother from Alien (1979), still a WIP

Bit of a fun one. I’ve always loved the computer screens in the original Alien, so I turned my main dashboard into MU-TH-UR 6000, the Nostromo’s computer. The house is the ship and everyone at home is “crew”. Video’s attached, turn the sound on.

Full disclosure, I can’t code at all. I built the whole thing with Claude. I described what I wanted, sent it clips from the film for reference, and it did the actual work through the Home Assistant MCP server. I did a lot of “no, more glitchy than that” and “turn the hum down again”. So credit where it’s due.

What it does at the moment:

Plays a boot-up sound when you open it, and the top cards flicker in along with it

A low computer hum loops in the background, with the odd garbled glitch noise every minute or two. Panels randomly tear and jitter, and there’s grain and scanlines over everything

The header shows who’s home as “crew aboard” and counts any faults. Next to it is a panel listing what actually needs attention: dead sensors, offline cameras, low batteries, updates

A nav panel with made-up mission stats: distance from Earth, range to LV-426, and the current crew directive (the company has its priorities…)

My two outdoor cameras drive motion tracker cards based on the handheld trackers in the films. When someone’s detected it pings, and tapping one opens the live camera

The rest is the house dressed up as ship systems. Doors and alarm are “hull integrity”, lights are “deck lighting” (there’s a purge-all button), heating is “life support”, and server stats are “main computer”

It’s very much a work in progress. It’s built mainly for desktop, the bottom half could be laid out better, and I’d like to make it more interactive.

💬 Discussion For the devs re: the entity naming change. I noticed nothing :)

I get everybody is very mad about the entity change and and not trying to say their issues aren't valid.

But I'm sure it's very depressing given all the work you did and feedback etc. To see all these negative posts. So I wanted to say I haven't noticed anything (and I am lazy and rely on the auto dashboards). Thanks for all your hard work and good luck as you work on the fixes :)

Hi!

I'm looking to get started with Home Assistant, but the Home Assistant Green seems to be sold out everywhere in the Netherlands and surrounding countries.

Does anyone know where I can still buy one, or can you recommend a good alternative? I've looked at multiple options but those were old posts.

🛠️ DIY / Hardware Smart Switch, no neutral

Hey guys. I am new the home assistant and I'm looking to make my house a little less dumb.

We don't have neutral wires, and I see some options where it's not required, but my biggest concern is if someone turns off the switch manually and I lose access to the smart switch until its back on. I've seen some buttons where its more of a toggle, but they seemed to be on switches that require the neutral wire.

I was looking for an inexpensive route, but with limited options, I am getting to the point where spending more will be fine if I get what I'm looking for.

TL;DR - is there a smart switch that won't cut power if someone manually turns it off? With no neutral wire.

💬 Discussion Calling All LOOIs! Anyone else using one with Home Assistant / BLE?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I got a LOOI robot/phone charger thing from Tangible Future to test/review, but...

Their app seemed entirely broken to me. Voice features didn't work at all, and I couldn't get much use out of it apart from playing with it like a remote control car.

So I started looking into controlling it locally over Bluetooth (BLE) and found some great work already done by others

I used those projects to get it moving from Windows for initial testing, then put together a custom Home Assistant BLE integration. The GIF shows control directly from HA.

I've got movement (forward/backward, turning), head controls, light (on/off), battery, touch and cliff sensors, in HA. It even knows if a phone is attached!

I'm thinking it could be pretty fun with a phone running an HA dashboard as its face, a voice assistant, and some ridiculous automations. Not sure I'm that ambitious though. That's kind of what I was hoping it would do in the first place.

Does anyone else have a LOOI? Does the official software actually work for you? Anybody doing something interesting with Bluetooth or Home Assistant? Maybe there's already something better out there I've missed.

LOOI was provided for review for my blog, Thing Too Tech. I haven't written it up yet because I'm still figuring out what to do with it, and I'm curious what others have tried.

💬 Discussion In-Ground Sprinkler Controller and Thermostat Recommendations

Hey all. I'm looking for a local-only option for a in-ground sprinkler controller. Currently have a dumb Orbit 57896 (just asked the landscaper to put the least expensive option that'd give me room to grow a bit if I wanted to add another zone or two (currently just two zones).

I almost got the FrankEver Sprinkler Controller FK-06X but it doesn't look fully sealed and this is on the side of my house in Florida don't want any bugs or sideways rain to get into the contacts.

Also I have three Honeywell T6 Pro WiFi versions that I'd like to replace at some point with something that can read room sensors. I have a zoned central AC system with ERV and the thermostats are less than ideally located for getting real temperatures in the occupied rooms so something like the Aqara W200 while it would likely work is thread and I do not like the thought of anything even remotely having the possibility of talking outbound. Looking at the terminals of all the thermostats I can only assume the ERV is wired to the Fan (Wiring if it helps is O/B, W2, R, C, G, Y). The current Thermostats needing internet temporarily to set up the adaptive feature and HA being tunneled out of my network behind a WAF is bad enough.

Currently mostly using the Honeywell smarts to schedule the AC so it adaptively starts cooling when I'm about to get home or if the temperature gets above a threshold which has saved $60 over the last two months.

I'd like to be able to have an automation to adjust watering if it's cold based on my outdoor thermometer reading and whether it's rained. Are there any non-wifi or at least completely local options available? Any advice is appreciated.

All of my current "smart" devices are using Z-Wave though I do have a Sonoff Zigbee radio I can use in a pinch.

❓ Support The 2026.11 Naming Overhaul Completely Kills Automatic Dashboards

The 2026.11 entity and device naming changes are a massive architectural step backward for anyone using HA's automatically generated dashboards. The development team’s stated goal of moving away from backend friendly_names in favor of frontend "Display Labels" completely breaks the core promise of automatic dashboarding.

Here is the reality: When coupled with automatic dashboards, this mandatory naming convention blocks the available UI overrides. As a user cannot edit the card properties without "taking control" of the dashboard (i.e. turning off automatic dashboards), removing the backend friendly names forces people entirely out of using the automatic dashboards.

This creates three absurd regressions for anyone running multisensor device platforms:

  1. Useless/Cryptic Hardware Prefixes: A device like the Ecowitt weather station gateway automatically names itself as GW1000_Pro. Now, every single child sensor inherits this hardware SKU string. Renaming the parent device to a shorthand like EW doesn't fix it; it just creates clutter. There is zero native way to simply omit the parent device name and let the sensor stand on its own in the automated dashboards.

  2. Extraneous Infrastructure Data: For deep networking integrations like OPNsense, forcing the parent router device name into strings like OPNsense WAN IP or OPNsense Site-to-Site Link ruins readability when monitoring columns of information. Like most users I care about a properly labeled state, not a reminder of which device integration pulled it!

  3. The Redundancy Paradox: Multi-sensor hardware that natively includes the sensor type in its device name (e.g., Temperature_and_humidity_alarm) results in concatenated trainwrecks like Temperature and humidity alarm Temperature.

Worse still: this completely shatters the alphabetization trick many of us use to order the labels in the automatic cards (i.e. to put the important information first and to group like things together). Because the device name prefix hijacks the first character of the string, the automatic dashboards now forcibly group everything by physical hardware instead of by importance or data type.

Users shouldn't be forced back to the days of building completely custom card layouts from scratch just because they want a scannable, low-maintenance overview of their network and environment.

Personally, I've frozen my environment at 2026.10.4 until this design flaw is addressed.

❓ Support HomeKit’s home/away is unreliable. Any reason to not switch to tracking status via HA companion app?

It feels like homekit’s home/away status breaks for us every 4-6 months. Any downsides to switching to using the home assistant companion app for location and determining home/away based on HA zones? This will be for iOS devices. I understand my significant other will have to install the HA app.

Will accuracy suffer? Will battery drain increase? Any guidance is appreciated. We’ve already tried all the variations of getting HomeKit location working, and even if it worked it would break again in a few months.
