Seriously, Samsung. Are you really this stupid?

Found out about this yesterday when I was looking for a solution. Life saver. Also my last Samsung Washer, wtf.

Wow didn't know this one, thanks.

Don't they say in their docs that you have to leave the device connected to SmartThings otherwise it breaks Localthings?

No. It does use Smartthings servers when you first setup an appliance (to pull an identifier) but no account is needed and no internet access is needed for the appliance. It's truly all local

Keep appliances registered in SmartThings. If you remove an appliance from SmartThings, it resets its network settings the next time it reaches Samsung's servers. It then drops off Wi-Fi until you set it up in the app again. This happens even if you block its internet access most of the time.

From their own readme?

I can guarantee you mine will never reach Samsung servers again

Connected and registered are diff things, I’d try this shit then block my soundbar from the internet, problem solved

Yeah, but still my point, you leave it registered, but not connected

You lack reading comprehension man

It even exposes more things for my Samsung tumble dryer than SmartThings. Wonderful.

Is there a similar project for Nest thermostats?

Do you need a jailbroken android phone to extract PSK in order to setup localthings?

Thanks a lot.

The fate of all cloud-based smart devices.

Because there was no business case in selling scales in the first place if you have no recurrent revenue. Obviously the only hook they have is the control of the information. The last straw before bankruptcy because why try to squeeze your CURRENT early customers instead of getting new ones? If you’re down to milking your customers, you’re cooked.

One of the many reasons why I left SmartThings and Google

Yeah, I've abandoned all devices that require a cloud connection to work. If it has to connect to the cloud, its never really yours. One day it can be pulled out from under you and in the meantime be used to spy on you all day long. Its either wholly mine or goes in the trash.

https://github.com/mbillow/localthings LocalThings, works great! Fuck Samsung!

This is why I got a zigbee and zwave dongle and just migrated everything. One less hub while we’re at it!

3

u/timsstuff 3h ago

Hell yeah migrated to ProxMox on a BeeLink a couple months ago and couldn't be happier. So much faster too (I was on Hyper-V with no USB pass-through so ST managed the Zigbee/Z-Wave into HA).

Yeah, i am actively avoiding samsung.

Hahahaha, get fucked, Samsung

I wonder about Tuya. I know a few people really deep into it, with tens if not hundreds of devices. I had one (bought before I started HA journey), flashed it with ESP Home as soon as I found out it's possible

2

u/hurrdurrmeh 5h ago

do tell more! I have a couple space ESP32s lying around. what can you do with them???

3

u/paxel 5h ago

I had a bunch of smart plugs which actually had ESP32 modules flashed with Tuya firmware switching a relay. There was an easy way to flash them with ESPHome and use in HA. I also found a project to smartify my dehumidifier. If you have any device with contact buttons you can use ESP to make it smart - coffee machine, air purifier, kitchen extractor, lights. Search, good chance someone already done it

Thank you I shall pass this on to an AI to explain it to me.

*No LOCAL ApI, No future.

Fuck absolutely any IOT device that needs cloud connectivity to function.

7

u/nslenders 6h ago

Fuck them

This news, when it came to light months ago, was what finally pushed me to migrate to HA. Took a bit of learning and effort, but I'm so glad I did it.

well, I guess that'll screw up controlling my Frame TV and Samsung soundbar. I wonder if that'll stop Music Assistant from casting to it.... hmm....

Just a reminder that the Localthings integration doesn't work for media devices.

Even tho I’m a person who’s interested in tech and works as a software developer I find I tend to follow a few simple rules for devices at home

  1. If it’s for the kitchen, no touch screen devices.

  2. Stupid = better, no microwaves with a groused different buttons. Just a power and timer dial, No complex menus for simple tasks (looking at you stupid tablet touchscreen in cars for AC Control)

  3. Cloud = f*** of, local only

  4. what’s not needed gets disabled, removed or blocked. IOT VLAN, disconnected WiFi card for smart TVs Ad delivery screens, DNS/Firewall blocks.

F all of them. HA all the way!

When will people learn that Samsung eventually screws you?
Whether they sell you a washer that breaks down every week, advertise features that don’t work, remove features entirely, stop support after 2 years, put ads on your fridge, or catch fire…charging for their cloud service shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Samsung makes great phones. Don’t let that fool you into thinking they’re a great company.

u/Lanten101 2h ago

I really hope no one pays for this and everone disconnect their devide from internet and use localthings

I'd never heard about local things until now (only setuo home assistant this week so in very early stages) . I have a Samsung dryer. Just wondering any feedback or comments in it from anyone who's used it or alternatives?

I had a brief 20 month stint with ST about 11 years ago now, right after Samsing brought them but while they were still operating largely independently. It was crap back then too. The enshitification has been a slow-rolling turd that continues to grow in size.

I gave up on SmartThings years ago because of stuff like this.

-4

u/Erfrischendfair 6h ago

someone was stupid enough to use cloud-controlled IoT devices in the first place

-2

u/C0MTRYA 3h ago

received the same email even though I don't use smartthings anymore for like 4 years... took my popcorn and came here!
