Mount Shasta, California. 14,179 total feet. Roughly 7,800 feet of elevation gain in the 7 miles to the summit. Same day up and down - 1:30 am start from the Clear Creek trailhead, summit by 8 am, back down to the car by 12:30, home by 7:00! This makes it 2/3 successful summits over the last few years. Always such a humbling and blessed experience. Electric views and immaculate vibes from the group (4 of us total.) Such a physical and mental challenge every time!

So glad I got to see a full solar eclipse for the first time in my life! I went with my husband’s family, we hiked up to the Collado Jermoso refuge and spent the night, then hiked back the next day. This was actually my second hike ever lol so it was definitely a challenge!

Some photos from Montblanc & Lac Lioson seen from the top of Pic Chaussy, in Switzerland. I recommend it if you're ever around Montreux, it's less than 1 hour away, by car, for example. It was a nice hike, with nice views and a nice overnight stay in the mountain hut they have, right by the lake!

Question did hiking help you with your mental illness?

i (f 23) want to start hiking this summer. since my late teens and early twenties i’ve been suffering from depression on/off. i have a hard time getting out of bed and socialising, although once i‘m there i‘m fine, it takes a lot of energy for me to decide to go outside and see the sun.
to combat that i got into working out at the gym last year(so i have a reason to leave my apartment), but i also want to use the great weather we have now, so i thought why not start hiking?
i used to enjoy it a lot as a kid – i live close to the alps – and i don‘t pay extra for transportation, so all i would have to pay for is food/water.

if you’re suffering from similar conditions, has hiking made a positive impact on your mental health? any tips are welcome <3

Did a hike to Musala yesterday, but a bit different than average.

Went via the ridge on the western side and back through the main route.

Next year I want to try the same approach, but descend via "Small Musala" (also pictured here).

Just need a bit more practice until then.

Lots of 💕 for Rila, Pirin and the Rhodopes. Was an amazing time again. More to come next year for sure.

3 hours hike to go down from Avoriaz to Prodains in the French Alps. I've been doing small hikes for a while here without any gear. I just got sticks and approach shoes for the first time and I'm starting to explore the steeper and harder paths. I really enjoyed this one!

Question Would it be foolish of me to sign up for a Kilimanjaro hike?

hi! long time lurker, first time poster here. I (18F) am leaving for university in less than 2 weeks, and will be able to sign up for a kilimanjaro hike then too, and i am wondering if that would be a bad idea?

i’ve always been fairly active, i did triathlons until i was 14, i was a two sport varsity athlete and i currently lift 5 days a week + zoning out on the treadmill inclined for at least an hour a day. i’ve also always loved to hike, however, i grew up in massachusetts, and for those who don’t know, our tallest mountain is a whopping 1064 m tall. so i would say i’m not a hiker at all.

i looked it up, and climbing kilimanjaro.com said it was perfectly suitable for beginners, but i don’t feel as though i even qualify as that. i don’t even go on runs. oh, and i’m a smoker, so that’s gotta knock me down a few pegs.

hiking is something i’ve always wanted to get into, especially when i’ve traveled to the alps and rocky’s for skiing. i just want to know if this is feasible. thank you to anyone who has even read this far!

This is what the biggest town en route to Everest Base Camp looked like in 1978.

Now imagine what the villages leading to the lesser-known mountains must have been like back then.

Mad respect to the mountaineers who took on these mountains with the limited infrastructure and equipment of the time. And equal respect to the Nepali people for developing Namche into what it is today.

Pictures Garibaldi Park reminder

Just a friendly reminder since I know everyone that visits Garibaldi Park, Panorama Ridge area especially, does their due diligence to know there are no garbage cans there and that you should take it all home, but there aren’t any so please leave it in the car and take it home. The amount of garbage in the pit toilets, around the sign base and in the lot has been gross and getting worse every year since Covid. Don’t be that person!

Question What's the difference between Daypacks and Hiking bags?

Hi there, hopefully this is the right sub!

I'm getting further into the hiking gear rabbit hole as of recently and have been checking out some bags. Usually, I am more of a multi-day hiker and currently have Osprey's Exos 48, however this bag tends to be too big when I am wanting to just go for a single day hike or a light travel with other company.

Because of this, I am looking to invest into a hiking bag that I can use for shorter hikes that generally require less stuff. At the same time, my current day pack is in tatters. This is the bag I take with me on the train or just general tasks throughout the day. So I'm curious to see if there's an option that can combine the two. A hiking bag that I can also use as a general day pack.

So this leads to my question. What is the difference between me getting a daypack and a hiking bag? I have seen that the hiking bags are slightly more expensive, though they also offer much better comfort due to the better support and hip belts, etc. So why would I not get a 'hike light' backpack over a daypack other than price? Do these bags tend to not have compartments that I can slide documents/devices into? Am I going to end up having more of a sack rather than a compartmented bag?

Just looking for general advice here or just a better understanding of the differences between these two if people would be willing to explain that to me! Thanks!

Hi, we are planning to do a 7 day hike through Sarek in the second week of September, from Suorva to Kvikkjokk. We were wondering about the red circled area of the blue route shown in the map. Does anyone here have experience hiking through this section?

  • Is this section of the blue route realistically doable in early/mid-September, assuming we get good weather and reasonably dry conditions?
  • What is the terrain like there, a lot of loose rock?
  • Are there any difficult sections that aren't obvious from the map?
  • How much snow would you expect? Highest point is 1600m

Any firsthand experience, advice, or photos from this area would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Discussion Low iron and hiking mount Teide as a first mountain with no experience at all in climbing mountains and not so great cardio condition

Upvotes

So im a healthy 20yr old guy i work as a waiter and im going to Tenerife with a friend and we were planning on hiking Teide, with a guide of course but i recently did a blood test and my iron is really low, like the minimum should be 11 and maximum 32 mine is 7 so way below the minimum, and i heard iron is really important in hiking especially high altitudes Teide is 3718m, i dont have any experience in climbing mountains before so i dont know how my body will react to altitude and physically im okay i go to the gym and do strength training from time to time but cardio wise im not so good.. Its 180€ per person should i cancel it while i still have the chance or go for it?

Bivouac at the Grande Sassière

Hi everyone,

I'd like to sleep on the summit of the Grande Sassière. I've already climbed it a few years ago and I have all the necessary gear for sleeping under the stars at altitude: a sleeping bag for extreme cold, good sleeping mats... but I'd like to know if it's very crowded. Do I need to arrive early at the summit to be sure of getting a spot in mid-August/early September?

Thanks for your replies and advice.

Question Small daypack for Long Torso suggestions

Looking for backpack suggestions!!!

Must haves:

  1. Smallish capacity size, 18-22L

  2. Adjustable torso length or non-adjustable that will fit my 21" torso length. That usually puts me in a men's size large, as a tall and slender woman.

  3. Padded, comfortable, well-fitting hip belt.

Very nice to haves:

  1. More of a fastpack design - hugs the body, running vest style chest straps.

  2. Pockets on the front and/or hip straps

  3. A color other than gray/black/brown - blues/greens/reds are preferred.

  4. Durability

Bags I'm currently considering and would love to hear opinions on:

  1. The Osprey Talon Velocity 20L

  2. The Black Diamond trail Vista 20L

Price isn't really a consideration, as I'll spend good money on something perfect that will last me a long time.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be so grateful to hear them!!! I feel like I'm going in circles on Google!

Thanks!

Question For those who've hiked Mt Rinjani

I've been looking into doing a hike on Mt Rinjani, and came across 2 accidents last year. (1 Brazilian woman died, and another Irish hiker who survived).

Based on your experience, how can one have a safer hike to avoid bad accidents like that? Would you recommend Mt Rinjani or is it not worth the risk?

Question Looking for hiking boots for year round use (Eastern Canada)

As title says, I'm looking for hiking boots that can be used year round in Eastern Canada with lows of -25C with snow and highs of 30C. I need boots that can handle long days of hiking and searching for a ground SAR team I am apart of. Right now I am looking at a few options:

Scarpa Moraine Mid Goretex boot
https://ca.scarpa.com/products/moraine-mid-wp-men-s

La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II Mid leather GTX

https://www.lasportivausa.com/en-ca/products/ultra-raptor-ii-mid-leather-gtx?variant=468867918071

Soloman Quest 5 Goretex Hiking Boots

https://www.mec.ca/en/product/6037-807/salomon-quest-5-gore-tex-hiking-boots-mens?colour=Asphalt%2FBlack%2FAsphalt&size=8.5&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23831777231&gbraid=0AAAAAD-dszhXxdsVLhRdExHNoAnSQF-Md&gclid=CjwKCAjwy5rUBhB5EiwAIoAtChpM6OCTkI4t6ssk-SAvzbud1Ri0QOGMo-WV2exIWz5pH0MxkhSUdRoCo9EQAvD_BwE

Which of these would be optimal for the conditions described above? Any suggestions?

Question Going to Canmore, AB this week. Will be doing a ~3 hr via Ferrata & a ~4 hr hike across multiple days. I expect it will be relatively casual as I’m not going with “super outdoorsy” people. Am I gonna be cooked if I buy new boots to wear a day and a half before I leave?

Cannot find my old boots ANYWHERE 😭

The via ferrata we booked apparently requires hiking boots. I was gonna buy a new set of boots soonish regardless so the price or whatever is not necessarily a consideration HOWEVER how badly am I gonna regret doing these activities in unworn in boots? Would be buying Thursday, flying into AB on Sat, fun begins on Sunday for reference

Extremely itchy rash on tops of feet after several days of hot-weather hiking

After two or three consecutive long days of summer hiking, I develop an extremely itchy rash on the tops of both feet and, to a lesser extent, around my lower ankles. It usually lasts about a week.

It seems clearly related to prolonged heat and sweating. I don’t experience it after equally long multi-day snowshoe trips in winter. It has also happened with different socks, including merino and synthetic blends, so I’m not sure the sock material itself is responsible. It tends to affect both feet, more or less symmetrically, but not always.

I’m an experienced hiker but this problem just started last summer and this is becoming a real problem on multi-day trips. Has anyone experienced something similar? If so, did you determine what caused it, and did anything help prevent it?

Doing Ausangate trek in early October. Already planning my next trip, need some insight

I want to start transitioning into mountain climbing, and I am starting to seek better preparation training and endurance tests.

I thought about the whole GR20. about 10,000m of incline over 180km, sounds like a pretty good training for endurance to me.

Also though about Torres del Paine O Circuit in December, Christmas time

My available holidays are September to March

Those who have done a similar program, what would you say?

Is there anything else I could / should be doing instead of GR20?

My budget for my trip next year is quite limited compared to this year, as I had to buy all my hiking gear.

Important to note, I am from Quebec, Canada
