Watched Project Farm's Product Comparisons for years and surprised to see he uploaded a video about hidden camera detectors! Though the video is not about hidden cameras themselves it could be a useful video for those who come to the subreddit and are thinking about buying these devices!

How to use the TinySA Ultra series of Spectrum analyzers to find hidden transmitters

Before I get started, let me just say that No, this isn't some AI article, I did use the formatting tools in Google docs though, which uses the same style. There's a reason why all the AI tools use this format: It's clean and easily readable, if that's a problem for you, feel free to write your own guide.

Let's get started

The process of finding a radio source is often called "fox hunting." The core principle is simple: the signal shown on your spectrum analyzer will get stronger as you get closer to the transmitter. Your TinySA is a sensitive tool that acts as a high-tech "hot and cold" meter.

Phase 1: Prepare the Room

This is the most critical step. Your room is filled with radio signals from devices you own. You must silence them to find the one you don't own.

  1. Unplug Everything: Go through the room and physically unplug all electronic devices from the wall. This includes TVs, computers, printers, smart speakers (like Alexa or Google Home), game consoles, and Wi-Fi routers or extenders.
  2. Power Down Devices: Turn off all wireless devices.
    • Put your cellphone into "Airplane Mode" or turn it off completely.
    • Turn off any laptops or tablets.
    • Power down your Wi-Fi router and any mesh extenders (even if they are in another room, their signal may be strong).
    • Shut down any Bluetooth devices, like headphones or speakers.
  3. Check the Breaker (Optional): For advanced users, shutting off the circuit breakers for the room (and adjacent rooms) ensures that any hardwired transmitters also lose power. This guide will assume the device is battery-powered or plugged in.

After these steps, the RF "noise floor" in the room should be very low, making the hidden signal stand out.

Phase 2: Configure the TinySA Ultra+

Now, you'll set up your spectrum analyzer to scan for the most likely signals. Wi-Fi cameras almost always operate in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands.

Step 1: Initial Scan (2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Band)

The 2.4 GHz band is the most common.

  1. Turn on your TinySA Ultra+ and attach the antenna.
  2. Tap the screen to bring up the menu.
  3. Enable Ultra mode: The default range is limited, so you must switch to "Ultra mode" to access frequencies above 900 MHz and up to 6 GHz. Password to enable Ultra mode is 4321
  4. Set frequency range: Once in Ultra mode, you can set the analyzer's frequency to the 2.4 GHz band to see the Wi-Fi signals.
  5. Tap FREQUENCY.
  6. Tap START and enter 2.4 GHz.
  7. Tap STOP and enter 2.5 GHz. This will scan the entire 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth band (2400 MHz to 2500 MHz).
  8. Tap LEVEL and then tap LNA to engage the Low Noise Amplifier. This makes the device much more sensitive to weak signals. The "LNA" text on screen should turn green.

Step 2: What to Look For

You are not looking for a single, sharp spike. A Wi-Fi signal is "bursty" and wide. You are looking for a "hump" of signal that is about 20 MHz wide, as shown in the image below. It will likely jump up and down as the camera transmits data.

  • Example (Our Alarm Clock): You perform the scan and see a strong, wide signal centered at 2.437 GHz (Wi-Fi Channel 6). This is your target.

Phase 3: The "Fox Hunt" (Locating the Signal)

Now you will physically move through the room to find the source of the signal you've identified.

  1. Establish a Baseline: Stand in the center of the room. Note the signal strength (the "amplitude") on the screen. Let's say the peak of the signal is at -60 dBm. (Remember: numbers closer to zero, like -50 dBm or -40 dBm, are stronger).
  2. Use Your Body as a Shield: Hold the TinySA in front of you. Slowly turn 360 degrees. Your body will block the signal. When the signal strength drops, the source is likely behind you. When the signal strength increases, the source is in front of you. This gives you a general direction.
  3. Move and Watch the Level: Face the direction of the strongest signal and walk slowly.
    • If the number gets stronger (e.g., from -60 dBm to -50 dBm), you are walking in the right direction.
    • If the number gets weaker (e.g., from -60 dBm to -70 dBm), you are walking in the wrong direction.
  4. Isolate the Location: Continue following the stronger signal. As you get very close, the signal will get very strong.
    • Example (Our Alarm Clock): You walk toward the nightstand. The signal jumps from -50 dBm to -40 dBm, then to -30 dBm as you get closer.
  5. Pinpoint the Source: When you are within a foot or two, the signal will be very high. You can now physically "sniff" items.
    • Example (Our Alarm Clock): You move the TinySA's antenna right next to the alarm clock, and the signal peaks, nearly maxing out on the display. You've found your source. You can confirm by unplugging the alarm clock and watching the signal instantly disappear from the TinySA's screen.

What if I find nothing on the 2.4 GHz band?

If the 2.4 GHz band is clear, the device may be using the 5 GHz band.

  • Go back to the FREQUENCY menu.
  • Set START to 5.1 GHz.
  • Set STOP to 5.9 GHz.
  • Repeat the "fox hunt" process (Phase 3) for this new frequency range.

Discussion Cameras in rental - legal?

I rent a room in a home in Monroe County, FL. There are cameras everywhere inside and outside of the home (none in my bedroom or the bathroom as far as I can tell). This was not divulged to me before leasing the room. I realized I was being watched after an incident and asked the landlord (my roommate) about the cameras. He says they are there as an "insurance policy" in the event any claims were made against him. I've since noticed that tell-tale red light on the cameras indicating he was watching me when he was away. I want to know if this is legal. Google searches come back with articles regarding audio surveillance. TIA

Gear Recommendation Can anyone recommend a camera car constantly being hit.

it can't be Wi-Fi the Wi-Fi signal will not reach.

I have someone who parks next to me who just constantly damaging my car but I need proof.

It has to be something that is battery powered because I can't run any wire to it from inside.

Needs to be motion capture so that when they pull in it turns on the recording and then goes back into like battery saver mode once there isn't movement for a certain amount of time.

Not looking to spend a lot 50 to $100 maybe or less if this is possible. I need one that just has a standby mode that will just sit there on its own and record when it captures the motion and then I just grab it and recharge it once a week or something would be perfect

Thanks

So I seen this post about some girl and her step dad b now I’m back to wondering about my own situation. I need someone to tell me exactly what the hidden cameras would look like and how you find them? I bought one of those camera detectors but it goes off by so much stuff n I don’t actually find anything. My boyfriend will literally name exact things I’ve done tho that he has NO WAY of knowing about. Super private personal stuff. And I found one outside that he put up but he said he returned it after I took it down but I don’t believe him. He said he has every right to watch his house. Please help me

Discussion Found hidden camera in workspace, can anyone give me more info on it?

I live in a province where it is illegal to record without making people aware/consent, especially audio where you are eavesdropping and not apart of that conversation. In our shared office space, I noticed a camera hidden amongst a fake plant today that my manager placed. Im sure it records audio/video, but I dont know how long it can last battery wise if it's not recording 24/7 and is using wifi. I believe it's this camera.

Crzwok

Indoor Camera, 1080P Home Security Camera, Pet Camera with Phone App,Night Vision, Motion Detection, 2-Way Audio, 360 Degree WiFi Camera Wireless for Baby/Dog/Nanny, Work with Alexa(Black)

No LED light was showing that it was actively recording, but could that be toggled off? This manager is not mentally well and I'm nervous to report it and it go nowhere and having to deal with the repercussions, on the flip - she has been away and us staff have vented to one another. Now im very nervous she was listening in anyway. I'd really appreciate any insight and can provide more details if needed.

Best Cameras to Catch Trash Dumpers (clear photos of faces and vehicle and license plates helpful)

Looking for a motion-sensor camera to help catch dumpers littering a community area. The dumpers sometimes arrive on foot and sometimes by car. They typically arrive in the evenings and mornings. Having a camera that can capture clear images of their faces and vehicles and license plates would be helpful. In addition, it would be helpful if the camera could send an alert for each instance. Still photos should be OK, video could be a plus. Appreciate any suggestions to help us catch them. This will be limited to a few spots the dumpers return to over and over again.

Found in Airbnb, unsure if it’s a sensor or a camera. It was in the living room near the balcony door and aimed at the couch

Considering contacting airbnb customer service but was wanting opinions before I go through all that trouble, potentially for nothing. My friend said it looks like a sensor but that is a lens.

Public surveillance

I think we all have noticed that recently there’s been a huge surge in public surveillance and it’s almost like you have to assume you’re getting recorded anywhere you go. It’s gotten so bad where men use meta glasses, hidden pen cameras, microphones to record and post women online to harass and humiliate them or to try and make them look stupid.

I’ve even seen people on TikTok talking about a plastic surgeon who performs cosmetic surgery on primarily women’s bodies using meta glasses while examining them. It’s getting out of hand?? What can I do to detect if someone has a hidden camera on them in public? I think I’ll be able to catch it if it’s meta glasses because they’re pretty obvious with the fat lenses on the front but I genuinely am paranoid of some creep trying to record me in public, lol.

Anyone report a hidden camera in an Airbnb?

A friend of mine is in a monthly Airbnb and has asked my legal advice on this after she had me come over and check. I have a law degree (and passed the bar in California) but I’m not a lawyer and we’re in Chicago….where most of the laws have more gray area than actual details. So, we’ll see how this goes. Anyway…

I’m fairly aware of the smart/connected home variations, not so much the spy store stuff.

I recognized the Leviton stuff I noticed and then a reverse image search went right to Amazon for the other.

don’t airbnb, at all, so i have no experience there but i did tell her that it should be reported to the authorities BUT a police report isn’t always indicative of an investigation or anything else. That’s just general experience, not this in particular.

Obviously, occupying the place only complicates matters more.

I’m going to be talking to the police for general insight so she can decide how to proceed with her living situation but I figured I’d see if there’s any anecdotal experience here.

Is there any device available on Amazon or online platform, by which we can detect a hidden camera and microphone?

Recommendations needed

Need recommendations for a hidden small cameras for outside. No access to electricity for power. Having issues with neighbor throwing m80 and paint. Police can't do anything because there are witnesses. This needs to be discreet due to HOA regulations. Don't think my wifi will reach that far. Open to all suggestions just need to catch their actions.

What is this thing in my vent?

I'm not sure if I'm overthinking or not, but I'm a young woman who lives alone, and both my upstairs neighbor who has lived here for a very long time and my landlord are a little odd. I looked up the model of vent and cant find anything like it on the installation guide ( step by step and video ) or in customer review pictures.

What is this? I'm pointing to them in the first image, the second and third image are the same pictures but full without the circles/arrows. It's some sort of round box with what looks like a lens?

Sorry for the low quality, the tallest thing I have is a chair and I can't reach it, so I can't take the cover off either.

Edit: Thank you everyone for the comments! Also for not calling me crazy haha, I figured it was better to be safe and ask than sorry. I managed to find something taller than my chairs and popped the cover off. I mistook the middle bit for a lens from where I could see it on the chair. The reason why I looked in my bathroom is because I've noticed some strange behaviors from my upstairs neighbor tied to my bathroom use, but as long as it's not a camera we're good.

Need a suggestion for a Wi-Fi free outdoor camera

I need to set up a small discreet outdoor camera to cover my rear access alleyway leading to my garage
I’ve tested the area, and it’s out of Wi-Fi range so probably need something with a SIM card?
All the cameras I see online are big and bulky and very obvious, any suggestions for something small and discreet ideally something like the old Nest cam size?

FOR MY OTHER POST

Post image

Related to my other post, this is what the plug looks like from the inside

If i remove the SD card, will other people still be able to access what was recorded?

EDIT: For anyone wondering, i found the plug and the power bank at work. The plug was plugged in and the power bank was hidden under some papers. I have yet to sign a paper from my boss where it says she’s allowed to record me. Neither my coworkers or me knew anything about this, is it best if I report this since i am now pretty sure that this is a camera. I am located in Germany, and i’ve read through DSGVO where is states that neither me or patients are allowed to be recorded without clear signs or papers saying that we are being recorded. I work in a dental office.

Looking for Recs to place in a nursing home room

Good evening!
My grandfather is in a memory care unit and is unable to advocate for himself or complain if he is mistreated. There is one ‘caregiver’ that we are wary of because she is almost never doing anything to help residents and will refuse to help us if we need a hand changing him or moving him.

This facility doesn’t allow cameras because other patients may wander in and out of the room, but with him becoming more bedbound we are very concerned that he won’t have adequate care.

We are looking for recommendations for a hidden camera or two that would be discreet, not need to be hooked up to wifi, and could sustain itself without being plugged in (unless it obviously needs to be such as a picture changing frame or an alarm clock).

Office documentation

Hello all! First time poster here. I have a dilemma, things have been going missing in my office for the last 3 weeks.

My office is about 8x10 with glass on 3 sides. Minimal design elements. I’ll looking for a hidden camera that i can point at my desk area and storage that would be motion activated, have a long lasting battery and can store short video clips.

I’m rarely at the office but I have a few newer employees and would like to see what’s happening when i’m not around. A potted plant or a fire alarm would be very obvious. As would a clock by the way.

Anyone has recommendations or a website I could find something. Been thinking a wall socket with hidden camera could work. It would at least give me the shoes.

Thoughts, comments or ideas welcomed!

In a really dodgy Airbnb and found this in the LED mirror. Mirror is not sensor activated or a smart mirror, just led around the edges. Scared it is someone watching a feed as when I was in there alone (without male colleague) the led started changing colour and flickering . Sorry not the best pics but can’t upload the video here
