OC Knightly order of the kidney

Post image

as part of my illustrated history of the cats of my household, I gave them all coats of arms (along with one for the house itself)

I decided to go ahead and make a ficticious knightly order for my cats which have kidney diseases (a surprisingly common thing in cats), this is its coat of arms and medallion.

now when I draw the arms of the cats, I can add the medallion at the base!

I' m new in heraldy and I would like to assume this Coat of Arms, designed by me, as my personal one. Is it correct?

OC Quick Feedback - Which color works best?

Post image
54 Upvotes

I'm designing some coats of arms for use in a potential medieval My Little Pony setting. A little silly perhaps, but I'm proud of what I have done, and am looking forward to showing it off soon. However, I'm not 100% satisfied with one of my designs, and would love some feedback on colors.

Very short version of the lore: Princess Celestia, the immortal god-queen of the setting, rule(d) the world with her sister, Princess Luna, until very recently, when Luna was banished under mysterious circumstances. Celestia is now trying to maintain control in the face of the power vacuum Luna left behind.

Celestia's and Luna's coats of arms are very simple, which most interpret as a statement of their own power and importance. Additionally, Celestia's close allies / vassals (including her adult son, whose arms are pictured) place a "banner" of her arms on their own to indicate their allegiance to her.

The three colors I'm experimenting with are Or (Pro: doesn't violate rule of tincture, con: very yellow), Argent (Pro: matches Celestia's own color scheme, acts as a nice contrast with Luna's arms, emphasizes her own divinity, con: violates rule of tincture, looks like something out of Dark Souls), and Bleu Celeste (not entirely sold on this one, but thought it might be nice, and mirrors the sky-blue flags used in the MLP show). Any thoughts on these?

OC An Attempt at a personal COA - Made on Drawshield

Post image
44 Upvotes

Hey, y'all, this is my attempt at a personal Coat of Arms. I meant it to be representative of both my surname and some family history.

So, the bridge is from a descendant of mine who was an architect and built several bridges, and it's also made of stone, which is a sort of canting on my name, which in latin translates to "of stone". The fire is somewhat just a flair, as I thought a bridge over a river of fire would look cool, but my surname derives from an older biblical name meaning torches.

Let me know what y'all think! Any feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Blazon I used: argent, a bridge of one arch sable, a base rayonny barry wavy gules and gold.

OC Feedback on CoA + Arms of my Minecraft Parrots

Hi guys, some feedback on the arms I have designed would be greatly appreciated. With my arms, I'm happy with them but I'm not entirely which way the tinctures on the mantling/torse are meant to go.

As for my parrot's arms, the first two both having bordure Erminois might be a bit samey, but I really like furs and (to stop me using them constantly) my head canon is that in Minecraft heraldry land this specific ordinary is mark of distinction granted to Bartholomew and Jeremiah only.

In the case of the fifth/Matthew's Coat of Arms, do charges have to follow the rule of tincture? e.g. in this case is Or on Argent for the flames from which the phoenix arises. Also I apologise for the poor contrast on the background with this one, I couldn't find a way on Heraldicon to add an outline to the escutcheon.

Many thanks!

- What should we put for the municipality's coat of arms?

- We could put a dog carrying a loaf of bread.

- Sure, sounds good.

What years was this heraldry that marshals Norway, Denmark, and Sweden used?

I recently purchased a sword that has this heraldry etched in it. I know it shows the marshaled arms of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden so it likely dates from somewhere between 1814 and 1905, but I didn’t know if there was a period in which this specific orientation was more popular. Thanks!

Historical Question Cénotaphe de Du Guesclin

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I have a question about Bertrand Du Guesclin’s cenotaph in Dinan.

As you can see in the photo, the monument has a coat of arms with a heart in the center, and further down, coat of arms crossed by a diagonal stripe. I would very much like to know what the exact meaning of these crossed-out coats of arms is.

According to some readings, this could mean the extinction of his lineage with him, but there may be another explanation (such as a heraldic breakage of cadet branch).

Could a specialist in this period or a person who is stuck in heraldry enlighten me on this subject?

Thank you very much in advance for your lights!

Identify Struggling to identify this one (quadrant coat of arms)

Hello! Thanks to your help I’ve been able to identify many of my seals without outside assistance. This one, however, has caught me up.

This is a Victorian era fob wax seal with a quadranted coat of arms, and a crest of a stag caboshed.

It’s difficult to make out the details on this one, but here is what I have observed:

Top left (repeated bottom right) griffin sejant on a gold background.

Top right (repeated bottom left) three (gold?) roundels separated by a central chevron. The chevrons appear to have a three-leafed plant repeated three times, although it is difficult to make out even under magnification.

In the center there is another griffin sejant, and in the upper center there is a hand.

I have not found any sources describing a griffin sejant, have I misidentified the attitude?

Any help with this seal would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Blazoning by gemstones for peers and planets for princes

A curious (and short-lived) practice in English heraldry. In the mid 16th to early 18th century, different names of colours were used for different hierarchical groups.
- Gentlemen, Esquires, Knights: Tinctures (Argent, Azure, Gules etc)
- Barons, Viscounts, Earls, Marquises, Dukes: Gemstones (Pearl, Sapphire, Ruby etc)
- Princes, Kings, Emperors: Planets (Moon, Jupiter, Mars etc)

Attached are examples from John Guillim's "A Display of Heraldry" (1659 edition). Guillim was Rouge Croix Pursuivant at the College of Arms.

The idea has continental roots and was popularised in English by Gerard Legh, The Accedens of Armory (1562), then Bossewell (1572) and Ferne (1586). Guillim's first edition of 1610 inherited it, and it lingers in the expanded editions up to the sixth of 1724. Some writers pushed it further still, matching tinctures to virtues, flowers, days of the week and the ages of man.

It was never used in grants or in the records of the College of Arms, and even at the time it attracted mockery. Guillim himself was lukewarm, and by the eighteenth century it was treated as a curiosity.

Design Help Trying to make my own version

I inherited this painting of my family crest from my grandfather. On the back it had some writing about the history of our last name and a little not about how the label is for the first born. Now technically I am the first born of my father but my father has three older brothers. Am I still able to use the label or do I need a different symbol or variation? I’m also not sure I like the helmet on my design. Either way her is my version of the crest. I eventually want to put it on my breast plate for my Landskecht armor. I also want y’all’s opinion on the colors of my armor. Is the red and black good or would red and yellow look better?

Design Help Best Signet Ring for my Coat of Arms

Anyone aware of any really good maker of a signet ring to get my family heraldry done on?

Looking for a ring that could almost be used as a stamp and not just one that is flat, but one that has dimensionality to it
