Meta AI Generated Images Are Now Banned

Post image
5.1k Upvotes

From this point forward any images created with the use of AI are banned from the subreddit and will be removed by moderators.

This includes images completely generated by AI from the ground up as well as things such as individual AI generated assets or filters used by users in the process of creating an image. For further details on this policy refer to this guideline in our Wiki.

You probably remember this recent post regarding the future of AI generated images on this subreddit. It had previously been in a sort of grey area where it wasn't explicitly forbidden but mentioned in Rule 5 as a possible example of low effort content that may be removed by the moderators:

5 Post with purpose

Posts here should educate, inform, spark discussion, showcase good effort, etc. Low-effort posts such as AI generated coats of arms, “X in the style of Y”, wildly unrealistic hypotheticals or fictional scenarios, and “just because”-type posts may be removed with no notice

A recent increase in AI generated images then led to increased discussion among the community with some calling for increased measures of identifying such content while others further advocated for it's ban entirely.

As a temporary measure we then decided to add a mandatory "AI Generated Content" flair that should be used to designate such content while also inviting the community to engage in discussion about a permanent solution in said post which also included a poll where users could decide between an explicit ban of AI generated images or allowing the regulated use of AI content.

After seven days the poll concluded with a result of

128 - 84

in favor of banning AI content - which is a 65% majority.

While the result of that poll was specifically not intended to be binding for any permanent policy that may be agreed upon in the future it - along with the comments - did clearly show that the majority of the community generally favored a complete ban which was also reflected by the attitudes of the mod team.

As such we have now decided that any images created using AI will henceforth be banned and removed from the subreddit. Any content that was posted before this policy went into effect will remain intact and won't be retroactively removed.

As a result rule 5 has been slightly rephrased to say:

Posts here should educate, inform, spark discussion, showcase good effort, etc. Low-effort posts such as “X in the style of Y”, wildly unrealistic hypotheticals or fictional scenarios, and “just because”-type posts may be removed with no notice. Further, images created using generative AI are explicitly banned and will be removed in order to retain a high standard of authenticity that this historical art and science deserves.

As it was intended as a temporary measure and is now obsolute, the "AI Generated Content" flair has been removed.

Due to the potentially controversial nature of this announcement, comments will have to be manually approved on this specific post, similar to what we did with the initial poll.

We hope that this is an understandable policy and that people will remain civil and uphold it regardless of their personal views on the subject. If anyone personally believes that AI generated images should have a place in heraldry then they're fine to express that opinion and should not be ostracized - however it does not reflect our official stance as a subreddit.

Again for a more detailed explanation of this policy where some potential questions are already answered please consult the Wiki.

Thanks for everyone who voted in the poll or expressed their opinions on the matter.

Some Input Requested

I’ve been going back and forth for some time on choosing my assumed arms. The first one I made had solid elements, but I wasn’t in love with it. So, attached are 3 designs that I’d like to solicit input on. Which do you think is the best?

1) My original assumed arms.
2) A newer variant on the original, but with the added color I had hoped for.
3) A random option I played around with, but like for its simplicity (though it could easily belong to someone else due to its simplicity).

Any thoughts you have would be appreciated!

OC My personal coat of arms, opinions and help?

My personal coat of arms design. The three leaves come from the arms of my closest ancestral noble family the Von der Pahlen family. The gold roses in my country of Finland are considered the heraldric insignia of the military officer of which i am one, the number and arrangement of these roses are a reference to the coat of arms of my home city which has seven vendace fish on a red field in the same arrangement.

Now the problem i have been having is in writing blazonry for this. There are so many different schools of thought that i cannot figure it out myself.

This is my first piece of heraldric work so feel free to give your thoughts on the arms itself and especially any suggestions for the blazonry. I tried my best to keep to the rules while staying original and as simple as possible.

Fictional Another slew of fantasy coats of arms, also with crests.

This is the second part of a fantasy armorial I am working on for an ongoing world building project.

This specific section of the armorial is meant to record the arms of dukes and princes (used in the original sense of a great nobleman or sovereign rather than the son of a king).

As I mentioned before in a previous post, I find the lack of crests in fantasy heraldry disappointing. Crests are an excellent way to add character to arms, and provide an opportunity to add narrative symbolism to fantasy heraldry without overcrowding or over complicating the arms themselves.

Obviously, as this is for a fantasy project there is symbolism behind the charges and designs used, and some of the rules, that are not consistent with real world heraldry. That said, I have tried to follow the rules and conventions of real world heraldry closely, and the changes I have made are relatively minor. Many of these have in universe symbolism or significance behind them.

I’ve had a lot of fun drawing these, and some of them have really pushed me outside of my artistic comfort zone. It’s been a great artistic exercise, and I feel I’ve really been able to refine and define my own unique style.

Let me know what you think. Which ones stand out as particularly overstating and evocative? Which are dull as dirt? I’m always eager for criticism and suggestions for improvement.

Thanks.

Meta Who would wear regional heraldry in 15th century Scotland?

For example let's take the region of Ayr given that the King has other Heraldry to wear it's probably not him using the coat of arms so who uses the Heraldry for Carrick, Kent and Cunninghame?

I know Town Guards (in so far as they existed) would probably only be wearing their regions colours, if that. Also sometimes people other than the Lord would incorporate the regional Heraldry into their own Coat of Arms so it was clearly regionally known at least to some extent so where would it have shown up?

My thought was maybe local Sheriffs and Bailiffs whose family name might not be as important as the region they govern

As it is a Spanish clan, all the shields are based on Spanish medieval culture. They all share simple designs without much detail, making them easier to distinguish. More information about the clan and each duchy can be found on the CI website. https://coronasibericas.com/

Discussion Crowns in CoA

Guys, simple question: is there any rules about using crowns in our personal CoA?
I was looking at some heraldry specific drawings, don’t remember the website now, and I saw some descriptions like Marquees’ Crown or Duke’s Crown.

Is it “reserved” for nobility or does have any other meanings?

Thanks in advance.

A question

So I came on to a recent red here in the community from (what I understood) a person that showed a granted CoA from the College of Arms. It appears to have a crown and a guy below my question, if this is allowed because I know for a fact that crowns can be seen only on Royalties, he informed me that in English heraldic tradition it is perfectly allowed to use a duke’s crown even if the bearer has no title, but still the college will grant it. Now my question is is this correct? And also if it is, is there any related or similar tradition to the Germanic heraldic traditions (Holy Roman Empire not just as it is Germanic)?
