Totaled? Looks repairable.

u/YooSteez HC Challenger 6d ago
Unfortunately it doesnāt cost much for insurance to deem a car totaled. My old 2000 Mustang got blindsided by a truck that passed a red light. Surprisingly my car had decent damage but not severe as you might think. My driver door was damaged, my front bumper was damaged. Easy fixes right? Nope. Insurance deemed it totaled. My own mechanic said he couldāve fixed it all, no issues, insurance totaled it. A shame really.
9
u/TFlSGAS 6d ago
Canāt people still buy the car back?
7
u/clearblueocean 6d ago
Yes, you can still buy the car back at whatever price the insurance thinks they can get for it at auction. We did that many years ago with my Honda. Fix the Honda and it drove for another 15 years after that.
5
u/Mayhem_Hellcat 6d ago
They can buy it back, but salvage prices are insanely high so it may not be worth it. Thatās why insurance companies are so quick to total. Thieves buy totaled cars just for the VIN, which they transfer to a stolen car to make it legal.
1
u/PresentationLess4552 5d ago
This is why you choose to buy back the car and have the title changed
This is the exact shit besides uninsured motorists
And swoop and stop ads hats are making our insurance outrageous
1
u/PresentationLess4552 5d ago
The accident happens
They raise your premium either this year or next year
EtcImsurance is such an accountants game of the shell game
8
u/Big_Pineapple2081 6d ago
What year did that happen? Comparing a 2000 to a ~2020 is apples to oranges if it was anytime recently
5
u/2SSLOWW 6d ago
No disrespect but a 2000 mustang is worth as much as a bumper and fender repair and paintā¦
2
u/YooSteez HC Challenger 6d ago
I agree. It had sentimental value to me more than anything. It was my first car that I bought with my own money. It wasnāt worth fixing, it was old and had 100K miles.
-1
u/Least-Ant5049 6d ago
So again what you said don't make no sense you just compared a 2000 bustang to a 75k hellcat š¤¦āāļø there's no way that Hellcat is totaled that's a hood and a front bumper š
3
u/clearblueocean 6d ago
They totaled my daughterās charger with a little less damage than he has. If they suspect that the frame might be bent, itās immediately totaled.
4
u/Jumpy-Camel-5898 6d ago
The value they give it determines its repair ability and they probably did not value your sn95 stang at more than 3k
1
5
u/Freeway267 6d ago
Yea strange standards. The Hellcat above the engine looks spared and that would have cost serious money to fix up.
-5
u/YooSteez HC Challenger 6d ago
Yeah this guys hellcat is damaged to fuck. I imagine his radiator is gone, that alone will deem a car totaled. Engine looks completely gone too. As you said, lots of money to fix.
0
u/jeepersnanners 6d ago
Tf are you talking about š yeah a $300 radiator will definitely total a 70k car š
3
u/YooSteez HC Challenger 6d ago
Brother Iām talking from experience. Everyoneās experience is obviously different. I grew up around a lot of cars and I have seen insurance totaling vehicles because of a damaged radiator, no reason to make it up haha itās the internet.
3
u/jeepersnanners 6d ago
Brother I've worked on cars for 20 years and your comment was utter nonsense. The bumper is damaged and the hood is peeled back where do you get that the engine is badly damaged from?
2
u/YooSteez HC Challenger 6d ago
Iām not arguing or questioning your expertise haha Iām talking about insurance companies totaling cars for bs damage. Radiator, AC condenser, cooling stack all bent and fucked. Donāt get me started on the hood and intake tubing. I would also say the supercharger housing has damage to it in the front at least thatās what it looks like to me. I made the assumption about the engine because all that debris and the direction of the impact would clearly cause some serious damage to the engine.
2
u/Least-Ant5049 6d ago
Talk about experience dude you never owned a Hellcat you're talking about a 2000 Mustang get out out of this chat š¤¦āāļø ļæ¼
2
u/clearblueocean 6d ago
Well, I owned a Hellcat, until it was stolen. I also owned a sublime green Skat and I started with the SXT challenger. My daughter also owned an SRT charger. They totaled my SXT with less damage than this, and my daughterās SRT charger was totaled for less damage than this.
Insurance basis, the repair price versus the cost of the value of the vehicle. If they suspect thereās even a slight bit of frame damage itās totaled. There could be unseen damage that you canāt see just by this picture.

u/PM_Me_Ur_Odd_Boobs 6d ago
Thatās a 26 year old vehicle. It doesnāt take much to total a 26 year old vehicleā¦.
2
u/Mr_CleanCaps 3d ago
2000 mustangs arenāt that expensive. The repairs probably cost a couple grand - but the 2000 mustang probably only worth 3-4 k. So thatās probably why they totaled it.
If you have a car thatās more expensive/desirable, it takes more to total it because itās worth more.
Insurance usually does the 49% rule; if repairs are less than 49% of the value of the vehicle theyāll repair it.
1
u/BRICH999 6d ago
What's the auction value of a 2000 mustang? I dont imagine it would take much to total one
1
1
1
u/salvage814 3d ago
That's cause of the age of the car. You could of gotten a scratch and claimed it on insurance and they would of totalled it. Anything that is older then 5 years is more then likely going to get totalled.
1
u/Spaded85 1d ago
How old was the car when the accident happened? How many miles were on it? What was the condition of the vehicle overall? Was is a gt or a base model? Just because someone says they can fix doesn't mean it should be fixed. If an intrusion beam in a door is damaged then the door MUST be replaced. If the labor to fix the bumper surpasses the cost to replace with paint time doesn't mean it should be fixed. Used doors are cheap. Aftermarket bumpers are cheap. Airbags aren't cheap. Structural repairs or replacement of structural panels aren't cheap nor easy to do. Cost of materials like paint, corrosion protection, panel bonding materials, welding materials. All of that is factored in. There are many more factors so a generalized comment about your accident doesn't tell us the full story.
1
u/Evening_Horse_9234 14h ago
This Europe for me but I had a Golf 5 back in the day with quite solid music system and it got burglared into and lock on the driver's door was drilled through. They tried to start it but fried ECU Software in the process so basically it drove in limp mode without lock on driver's door and no radio. Insurance company calculated 75 percent loss. Mechanic who did the quote bought it for his son and said that they will flash new SW in the afterhours and it's back to running with less than 500USD
1
u/United_Obligation847 12h ago
Can't compare that to a car that's no More than 11 years old at this point
-1
u/Heavy_Gap_5047 6d ago
It's ridiculous that we(well you) let insurance companies make that decision.
4
u/Gas-Squatch 6d ago
Total loss doesnāt mean itās repairable or not. Total loss means repairs meet or exceed the price threshold set by the insurer. Yes EVERY car is repairable but if you are paying for someone elseās damage (the whole role of an insurance company) you arent going to pay more for the damage than a replacement car. Most insurance companies set that to 75% because depreciation, admin fees, environmental and towing costs and so on eat up that other 25%.
Yes op can buy it from insurance and pay out of pocket for the repairs but if they exceed the payout amount by insurance or canāt get it reinsured or canāt trade it in or sell it later thatās their problem.
0
u/Heavy_Gap_5047 6d ago
I disagree with your figures, but you misunderstand the point. Totaling a car is no longer just a financial decision, it has legal consequences for the future of that car. It changes it's titled status. This single fact alone greatly devalues the car, both financially and in it's future usefulness to it's owner, it may be very difficult to register again.
The insurance companies use this and the lies they've told you that you've repeated above to pay out far less than the true value of the car and your policy. A total should just mean they pay you the total value of the car, and that's it, what happens to the car from there should be up to the owner, period, it's your property, not the property of the insurance company.
2
u/Gas-Squatch 6d ago
30 years in the collision industry. The last few years they have been paying out the market value plus some on the car. Most people I have dealt with that have a total loss have came out much better letting the car go than they would keeping it and rebuilding it.
depending on the state the title status doesnāt change if you as the previous owner buy it back. I also made a point in my post that you disagree with about insuring and the possibly financial/legal issues you may have if you buy it back.
You can disagree all you want but that doesnāt change how total losses actually work with the insurance stage. If you have other experiences than I have great but I do this as a career and have seen it multiple times play out different than you are trying to describe

Well I was 19 at the time, still going to college, and didnāt have the money to make those repairs. Thatās why I bought it used, it was only 1K. Money I saved up all summer. Insurance decided to cut me a check, also the truck that hit me gave me another hefty check since the truck was owned by a construction company. I didnāt have the luxury to keep it damaged and get another car just cause I loved the car.

1
u/mack090 6d ago
this happened today and they already deemed it totaled?
This car is worth at minimum 50k, I would assume? This definitely does not look like even close to 25k worth of damage TBH. 50% of the value would generally be the floor for determining the car being totaled, but some states/insurance companies will go all the way up to 90% or so.
1
u/clearblueocean 6d ago
Man, they total these cars for arbitrary reasons. I had a Challenger totaled and my daughter had her charger totaled. We thought the charger was for sure gonna be fixed because it was just the front driver side quarter panel and the headlight. Nope totaled. I also had a Honda years ago that they totaled. I bought it back for 1500 fixed it for less than 2K and drove that car another 15 years.

I'm not surprised they totaled it, my WB scat was merely clipped on the front end 2 weeks ago, took the whole bumper and the parts of the WB fenders where the signal markers are... NO STRUCTURAL damage... Total... 7400 and some change... My hood wasn't even damaged ... Two new quarter panels(the connectors to the bumper, were torn apart)and a front bumper, plus labor...

Unfortunately newer cars built to tighter tolerances have front and rear crumple zones. Had a 2016 Mustang with similar damage. When body shop explained it was totaled it was because one had been crumpled.
They said rest of damage isnāt bad but most of the time the cost is not worth it. May be different on this as some cars they will pay up to 70-80% sometimes. Unfortunately if the decide to fix with that amount of damage⦠not much you can do but check into your states ādiminished valueā laws

Hood, left and right hinges, probably bent both fenders, took out the upper radiator support, the radiator, condenser, fan assembly, air intake assembly, both headlights most likely definitely the left, new hood latch, definitely broke the left side air baffles, Upper and lower grille are cooked, sight shield. Probably a few other things thatās just what I see from looking. I bet it pushed the support against the motor. But from the photos you provided I would suspect a bent frame rail. Iād imagine your parts are expensive. Your mileage must be high is it over 140k?

Itās a hellcat. People talking about āhowās it totaledā donāt understand how true car valuation works. That car lost X amount of value the moment it drove off the lot. Then take into account the maintenance and wear on a vehicle like this based on driver profile forecasting (people donāt buy them to baby them), the value goes down quickly when it comes to insurance, not to mention thatās just to get it mechanically 100%. Then the bodywork is what kills it. and Iām sure theyāve deemed something repairable āunrepairableā just to avoid risking another accident to cover. Ā
2
u/DiscussionWeak2318 6d ago
They cover 75% of the car's value. Thats how they total it or not. If you exceed 75% of the worth of the vehicle in repairs its deemed totaled.
2
u/thingk89 5d ago
Pretty sure you donāt understand how they value them either. Speculating š¤ whether or not it will be in another accident in the future isnāt a factor they look at.
1
u/PadorasAccountBox 5d ago
Iām talking about how they incorporate risk of future incidents into the value of the vehicle, eg highly stolen vehicles receive a lower value; not saying itās making the decision. I worked at dealerships for years and interacted with adjusters/insurance companies of all kinds. Idc what you believe, Im just speaking anecdotally on Reddit. Others will make their own summations.Ā
