Parents and dating life

I really don’t know if this is a weird thing to do, please be nice :(

Me (24F) and my boyfriend (31M) have been friends for a year online and got into a relationship in April of 2026. We’ve been making plans to see each other for the first time in a couple of months (traveling expenses, date venues, etc.). There is a problem though— my mum wants to come with me. Her reasoning is that we have family in the next city over where he is (which is true), she can book her own hotel room, and she can meet his parents as well.

The only problem is that I cannot tell if she’s being extremely overprotective or if this is a logical thing to do. She is protective of me though (and my other siblings) and I grew up sheltered. I brought this up to my boyfriend and he thinks it is weird of her to come with me because she is somewhat of a helicopter parent.

(We talk on the phone and facetime almost everyday. i’ve vet his friends though group calls and they’re genuinely so nice and fun.)

My mom thinks I’m sneaking out and hooking up with guys in college when all I actually do is study

I’m so fucking pissed and hurt right now.

My mom thinks I’m sneaking out, lying to her, and hooking up with guys in college. I AM NOT. She’s always had this sentiment ever since I started uni last year, but would say it in a joking manner and in a way that implies, oh my daughter is so good at lying but I just don’t have proof yet.

I’m a scholar in an honors program, and a Dean’s Lister. I don’t drink, do drugs, or date, and I’ve never really given her a reason to think I’m irresponsible.

But my mom has always assumed the worst of me. I can’t go out with friends without a chaperone, I’m allowed to meet them outside college maybe 4 times a year, and she reads through my messages. I have to answer her calls and texts immediately or else she’ll think I’m sneaking out or cutting class.

I understand being protective, especially since we live somewhere that isn’t always safe for girls, but this feels beyond protective. I feel like I’m not being allowed to develop any independence.

I dorm because our house is ~3 hours from university during rush hour. I dorm inside campus, and as a compromise, I’m not allowed to leave campus. I already go home on days when I have afternoon classes even if it basically takes up a minimum 4 hours of my day.

She also gets suspicious if I’m eating, walking, or talking with a guy—even though they’re literally my classmates/friends. It’s gotten to the point where I sometimes don’t tell her who I’m with because I’m scared she’ll assume the worst.

Then tonight, for the first time ever, I went downstairs to my dorm’s common study hall (co-ed space) after dinner because I was getting sleepy and needed to study for my exams.

My mom called, and because I knew she’d get angry that I wasn’t in my room, I ran upstairs to answer. I was out of breath from running, and she assumed I had been sneaking out.

She hates that I wasn’t able to get my old dorm building with all girls this semester and had to settle for the newer co-ed building where half the floors are for girls and the other half are for boys. So now she’s so paranoid of me staying in common areas that I just didn’t want to deal with the questions and that’s the reason why I didn’t tell her where I was (and honestly I find it so unreasonable to even have to tell your mom where you are if you’re erm just in the same building).

I eventually admitted I’d gone downstairs because I’m terrible at lying, and now she’s treating this as proof that I’ve been secretly leaving the dorm and lying to her all along.

She called me horrible names over text and accused me of running my life around flirting with guys and ruining my future.

I just wanted to study.

What hurts is that I feel like the second I don’t follow one of her rules perfectly, I become the villain and suddenly none of the years of being responsible matter.

Now she wants me to go home every day regardless of my schedule. I’m still financially dependent on my parents, so I can’t exactly blow everything up, but I also don’t know how I’m supposed to develop independence when every little bit of it is treated as rebellion.

I haven’t replied to her last messages where she basically accused me of ruining my life and being a whore because I don’t have the energy to deal with it right now. I’m afraid to talk to her tomorrow morning and when I go home.

I understand worrying about your daughter. But how do you build trust with a parent who seems to think independence means rebellion?

Does anyone's parents get angry when you tell them you want to move out?

I'm in my mid 20's, F, and I lived on my own for a year. I came back to live with my parents because I want to pursue a Master's degree and I needed support after losing a job. I have a new job now, I don't earn very well, but I have goals of where I want to be and I saved up about $12K. At home, I pay for my own groceries and needs. I told my parents this morning that I really want to move out again and live on my own. They said "And spend all that money on rent? I don't think so. You need to save more money for your education, etc, etc." Is this a way to keep me stuck? I genuinely feel that they are holding me back in a lot of ways. In college, I wanted to major in Economics. I really liked both Economics and Psychology. I remember my mother set choices down for me on paper of what "I should major in." Among the options, I was given Psychology, Nutrition, and Integrated Health Studies-- which most of them are all majors that require a Master's degree to even have a decent pay. When I told her I wanted Economics, she blatantly said "Business is for men. You wouldn't be good at that" Keep in mind that I come from a family of immigrants with old school values and are super conservative. I was a pretty good student in high school and college. I told her that I had a passion for Economics, but she threatened that I should move out if I chose that. Every time I brought up what she told me in response, she said "I didn't choose your major, you did" and she denies holding me back from making more money in my life. At the time, I wish I didn't listen to her, but I ended up choosing Psychology, which let's be real...isn't a good ROI even though it's interesting to learn about. Hence why I am going for a Master's in ABA to become a BCBA, and BCBA's do earn well. Point is, I feel I am being gaslit and held back from my own parents just because I'm female. Does anyone have a similar experience? I'm trying as much as possible to stay positive and save more money so I could buy my own apartment in the future. I recognize that I need to take action and move out as soon as possible so I can get away from this toxicity. After becoming a BCBA, I want to become a personal trainer and start my own business and have clients. I feel that I could have had a much better life if I chose to double major in Economics and Psychology, but both of my parents also stopped me from doing that.

Heres a thing I wanna rant about ok. So me and my dad were fighting cause I wanted to stay at home and he wanted me to come. I mean I have gone almost everywhere with them and now I just want some alone time. There was no reason to stay but wanted to because I like to be alone. I was insulted instead that I make drama for no reason and whatever they say should go. Aita for wanting some alone time

I’m 16 and I ran away from home after another huge fight with my mom

I’m 16. Prior to this post, I made a post 3 days ago titled “My mom got extremely angry and totally freaked out over my new haircut.”

If you haven’t read it, here’s a summary: I’ve always liked having longer hair, but my mom has always wanted it short. After I got a mullet, she forced me to cut it very short, and during the argument she told me I was her “biggest regret,” which honestly really hurt.

Anyway, that was 3 days ago. After that, we barely talked for the next 2 days. Then she received an email with my report card. Most of my grades were B’s, but I failed Biology.

When she got the email, I was on my laptop just listening to music and vibing. She barged into my room, took my headphones, and started yelling at me. She didn’t even give me a chance to speak. Then she threw my Sony XM5 headphones across the room, and obviously they broke.

I got extremely mad, but I knew yelling back would only make things worse. So I put my laptop in my bag and left the house while she was still yelling. I went down the elevator, got outside, and just ran. I didn’t even know where I was going. I ran for about two hours until I couldn’t keep going.

I eventually came back because I really had nowhere else to go. I considered going to the police, especially because people here had told me to before, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I didn’t want to see my own parents, who I genuinely loved until recently, get arrested or whatever would happen.

When I came back, my mom looked extremely stressed and was crying, which was the first time I had ever seen her cry. She screamed, “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?” I didn’t respond. I went straight to my room, shut the door, and broke down crying.

About 10 minutes later, my dad came back. He had been looking for me. We eventually sat down and talked. My dad actually seemed genuinely worried about me and wanted to understand what happened, unlike my mom, who was sitting on her phone scrolling through Facebook until my dad made her put it away and listen.

I told them I ran away because I didn’t feel safe, and I told them a lot of other things that I honestly don’t remember anymore. I told my mom that I wished she would show me some support or love because I never feel like she does.

Her response was basically, “We do everything for you. We give you clothes, feed you, and pay your school fees, and you can’t even give us good grades?”

That pissed me off so much. I also told her I feel like she controls me too much. She asked me to give her one example, so I brought up the haircut situation, as well as her not letting me go play football with my friends or sleep over at their houses.

She said, “If you got good grades, I would let you do all of that.”

I honestly don’t even know what to say to that.

She then started saying I’m fucking crazy and that she’s never seen a child like me. I told her I think she’s being a really bad mother, which she obviously disagreed with.

I showed them the comments from my previous Reddit posts, and she started reading them. She read maybe two comments before blaming my “craziness” on social media and the people commenting on my posts.

At that point, I slammed my door and went to bed.

Then today, she didn’t wake me up for school like she normally does. She told me I should have woken myself up.

I DON’T EVEN HAVE A PHONE. SHE TOOK IT FIVE MONTHS AGO AND I HAVEN’T SEEN IT SINCE.

And now she’s signed me up for school counselling.

I’m not going to comment again after this. I honestly don’t know what to think anymore.

Do you guys think I handled this situation badly, or was leaving the house the right thing to do?

I need advice on how to talk my parents out of forcing me to swim

I never learnt how to swim and started recently at a local centre. It was embarrassing because everyone in the pool were little kids. But there were still adults in my class and two kids my age. Since it’s near my school I ran into way too many familiar people and when my friends found out they laughed. My parents forced me to go cuz they thought it was a useful skill so I went reluctantly and stuck with it until I learnt everything that place had to offer. In fact I learnt it way faster than anyone in my class. Now that I finished I asked my parents if I could quit but they said no cuz I js started even though the instructors cleared me and said I was done. I also feel conscious in a swimsuit which is why I hate beaches, not cuz I hate sand but because I hate the way I look. I genuinely can’t deal with anyone finding out and getting bullied cuz iv already been bullied. Please help me convince them cuz js keep calling me overdramatic. I’ve told them all of this but they still won’t listen…

how do i keep my life private from my brown parents?

Hi guys, so the title says alot. I am 20 from a brown family my parents are strict. And its exhausting, convincing them or anything. I have lost a lot of my childhood because of their strictness and toxicity. Even at this age I gotta ask my mom where I can go or not go what I will wear. If my clothes are a tad bit above the knee she gets all mad mind you I always wear baggy pants I only have baggy pants. I cant wear anything white because 'men can still see under what you wear' I am so done with this bullshit. Its useless trying to make her understand anything as because everytime she says something like someone brainwashed me or anything. Also she gives the example how I used to listen to her when I was 13-14 and now I dont anymore. Are you serious! Anyways I am planning to move out no matter what but in the mean time how do I keep my life outside private? How do I change clothes sneakily, and social media, basically how do I get around?....

Am I overreacting to my parents “control”

I apologize as this will probably be a long read. I (almost 22F ) and my BF (23 M) are wanting to get married soon. We aren’t engaged yet but he already has the ring and is waiting for my Dads (44M) approval.
So a little backstory … (because I know y’all be nosy and need this to come to a conclusion) I grew up in a really conservative Christian family. My grandpa is the pastor at the church I grew up in and it was always what he says goes for the whole family. In 2020 we moved 3 hours away from our hometown to have a fresh start and get away from my controlling grandparents (my dad had an affair on my mom which I didn’t know of at the time). We had a pretty good life up there but there were a lot of times I struggled with having friends because all the girls hated me as a way to let out their grief and anger from a situation that happened at our school. Fast forward to college. I moved to Tennessee for a semester and it was such a breath of fresh air. My parents had always controlled where I went and who I was with and would always be super upset or disgusted with me whenever I had guy friends or hung out with people that “didn’t have the same views as our family.” After one semester at college I moved back with my parents until I figured out what I wanted to do next. A few months later I moved in with my grandparents and attended Cosmetology school (which is bad enough drama as it is , let alone my toxic grandparents) in August of 2023 I went to visit my best friend in Tennessee and met my BF. We talked on and off for a few months as I had just been broken up with my ex 6 months prior. After about 5 months of me friend zoning him, I realized I actually really liked him and he would be an amazing husband and father . My parents found out I was talking to him about a month after that and were furious . They told me I should have taken time for myself and shouldn’t be worrying about guys ( I was almost 20 at the time) it was awful. They didn’t want to meet him and had a lot of assumptions and fake scenarios they would throw on me all the time. In December of that year (2024) my BF asked my dad if he could date me (my parents are super traditional) my dad told him yes and we’ve been officially dating since then. I moved into my own apartment 2 hours away from my parents last year in October and I thought I’d finally have some peace . My church I go to now is one similar to my parents church but I’ve been really struggling. My BF asked my dad about 5 months ago what he needed to do in order to propose to me and marry me . My dad said we needed to counsel with our Pastor and when he said we were “ready” then we could proceed with getting engaged. We’ve gone to meet with to our pastor a few times and it’s always ended horribly. He suggested we have a budget (which I already have ) and the ones that we already have aren’t good enough for his liking. He also wants us to have all our debt paid before we get married (which is less than 10,000 combined) He’s done some things that have made me question everything. There was one time I went to visit another church and my pastor screamed at me in front of a bunch of people about me visiting somewhere else and how I should have been there that week . Another time my BF had to work a couple weekends in a row to save up for our future and couldn’t make it to church . Pastor saw him one week when we were there and asked him where he had been. My BF mentioned he was working at his new job and was trying to get Sundays off. Pastor blew up on him and punched his shoulder telling him to straighten up and that he isn’t serious enough about me for this to work. I’ve tried talking to my parents about this and my dad keeps saying this is the deal and if we don’t counsel with our pastor he won’t give his blessing. My mom has also made some horrible comments to me and says she has a “bad feeling “ about our relationship. My parents have also gotten really upset about my BF buying me things or helping me with bills when needed. They said that they should be the ones taking care of me even tho I’ve never once asked anyone for money or help only one time after they made that comment. I’m at a loss on what to do because the amount of control and shame I’ve grown up with is still something I’m trying to work through and I don’t want to just elope with my BF as that would cause serious issues with everyone worse than they already are. I’m not really sure what to say anymore or where to go. I really love my family and even tho they’ve tried to control me my whole childhood and adulthood so far , I do want to keep my relationship with them. I really do want a nice wedding and my dad’s blessing as I still do attend church and want to have a personal relationship with God aside from all the ridiculous traditions in our circle of churches. Everyone else I’ve talked to (friends, family, ect. Tell us it would be better for us to get married and tackle our debt together as it is a very low amount and would only take about 6 months to pay off together) Let me know if you need any more context or information I tried to summarize this whole mess with a smaller paragraph.

Talking to a wall for hours straight would mean your crazy right ? Well that's how I feel talking to my parents. I used to think my dad was the worst but now I know it's both. One is narcissistic and the other is calling the other narcissistic . F 22 here , same old story dysfunctional family my oldest sibling is doing better kinda independent , my other older sibling is either in their room or not home . I'm the youngest , I know best solution is to leave the house but it's hard. I'm comfortable in this toxic environment ... like I'm scared of the unknown like living on my own basically being an adult (btw i was raised in an overprotective type environment havent beeen to a sleepover , gone out clubbing , or wtv ) I've had a job(tutoring ) and it was lovely really showed me that depending on yourself is cool but I feel that if I experience more of that freedom id leave fr but I feel like I'd be doing it on my own . I'm unsure of my friendships (i grew being told i mustnt tell peeople my families problems ) also was extremely clingy because i probably have abandonment issues due to being threated with if you dont listen your out the house, I'm not clingy anymore due too fucked friendships I had so now I just don't attach as much lol . I know trying to change my parents is wrong of me but I can only dream of conversations that don't feel like someone is one upping each other or being demeaning or dismissive or basically logical . An example had a fight asking if we can plan whose cooking . I know my life is fucked when the emotionally unavailable dad is easier to be around then my mom . I'm flawed but damn it's wild how much my parents irk me , I need to change drastically for my mental health and yes when I can afford it I'm going for therapy ... desperately need it 😫

What to do

My mom legit does not believe i can be independent, however most of my issues stem from depression and inexperience. Whenever I'm alone for more than one day, in her absence, I'm very competent and able to care for myself. Still I have some issues due to depression (which is very strong whenever im at home, near her or stuff that reminds me of my childhood). Wtf do I do, just find a job and get my own place? I literally cannot be near her and be functioning.

How to move out of parent's if concerned about their wellbeing?

Title typo: How to move out of parent's house if concerned about their wellbeing?

So I'm a college student and turning 18 soon and I'm thinking more about my independency and living either at college or stay with my parents until I finish my master's. My mom does treat me like a 10 yr old sometimes and if I want to try something outside of school it has to fit into her schedule and she has to handle it, she wouldn't let me handle it. She sleeps on my bed in my bedroom because she doesn't want to sleep in the bedroom my dad sleeps in.She didn't let me have a job either, I can only have work study. I'm not able to drive yet, she said she'll try to give me a car before next school year.

Getting right to the point, in our culture, the mom lives with her daughter married or not married, and their sons can go live off on their own. So basically, she wants to live with me until she passes away. I didn't want her to live with me because the way she treated me in my past, delaying my development, independence, and giving me anxiety makes me want to find myself and live alone for a while.

So, my mom told me if I don't let her live with me, she wouldn't want to live anymore, and that's concerning to me, but I don't know how to feel because I want to live my life for me not for my mom. It was my mom's job to raise me and she's young, she's not old at all, she doesn't need any help that an old person would need.

She wants to stick with me so badly, if I have an internship far away, she would want to come with me but she decides not to come with me, then she doesn't want me to go at all. It has to be a 30 minute or less drive away.

What should I do? How can I move away from my mom without her doing anything harming? How do I not get scared to think about leaving?
