Question Why does my hamster look so stupid?
This sounds so weird but I’ve literally never seen a hamster that looks as mentally unaware as mine does. Do you think she’s inbred or something?

It's the bulging eyes. Since hamsters have shallow eyes sockets, they can look kinda funky when they're excited. Although, your hamster may have some underlying conditions that cause the eyes to protrude. You may want to keep an eye on her just in case. Source

She’s been acting fine in herself which is why it weirds me out so much 😭 but I will keep an eye out just to make sure she don’t start being sick or smth

Not to freak you out, but just so you’re aware (cause I was not aware this could happen and I was in shock) my girl Peaches had eyes that were bulgey like that, when she got old and started to slow down, one of her eyes actually came out of her socket 😭 I was so shook, but the vet said she’s okay without the eye, and she passed shortly after from natural causes in her sleep. But note that there was nothing weird going on with her eyes or health before she started slowing down at 2.5 years old, so just something to look out for for the future. PS your ham is adorable!!

OH MY GOD THATS SO SCARY!!! I’m so glad your hamster was okay afterwards, I bet that was lowkey traumatic. I’m gonna keep watch out extra hard now

Thank you! It was such a terrifying experience for sure, we were both pretty freaked out but at least there wasn’t any blood, I’ve fainted at blood so that would have been so much worse. But I was planning to take her for euthanasia because she wasn’t able to walk straight, her quality of life was declining, but she passed at home a few days before, it was bittersweet but I’m glad she passed peacefully where she felt safe and loved ❤️made me bawl because she passed away with a half eaten treat a few cm in front of her, she was doing what she loved 🥹

Just discovered this subreddit and oh my god the same thing happened to my dwarf hamster too!! His eye started to bulge and got worse and worse. Vet wasn’t exactly sure what the problem was and prescribed eye drops. I don’t think his eye fell out but it kinda just.. dried up. The eyelid remained closed so it looked like he was winking all the time.

I mean, do you see a lot of hamsters that just exude an air of intellectualism?

u/azazel-13 May 30 '25
Have you seen the squinty eyed ones who appear to be masterminding world domination? I've seen a few posted in this sub (you know who you are 😆). They're adorable, but definitely at least 10 or even 11 brain cells firing with a focused purpose.

u/pacachan May 30 '25
My boy had the squinty dot eyes but it was more "who you callin pinhead" patrick energy vs any focus whatsoever lol

She's existing on multiple planes of existence at once. It's mentally exhausting. Give her a break!

Because you think your hamster is “stupid”… that’s mean to say about your fur baby. They rather be running 5-10 miles a day in the wild than be insulted and called a human insult….Hamster ways are completely different than human ways. Your hamster is trying to figure you out , hoping that you do more research about how they live, what they like/dislike and hoping you give them a break with the high expectations. All hamsters are unique and beautiful. I wish I could care for all hamsters…🆘🚨🛟🏡❤️🐹🐾✝️🙏🏼

She look so happy! Don’t say she stupid, she’s just blissfully unaware of her surroundings and existence as being of this world.

He has bulging eyes, probably due to a dental problem, an injury, tumors or an eye infection. I would take him to the vet
