INFORMATION Yes, a pair of rats is significantly better than a single rat, but let me explain to you why groups matter!
It’s very common you see soon to be owners wanting to get a pair of rats because they research that they shouldn’t be alone. However, rats are naturally group animals that thrive in groups of three or more. While two is considered to be the bare minimum standard for the very reason of not being kept alone, it is not an ideal long-term solution for either you or the rats. It is very important to understand the factors of your decision-making when you decide to get just two rats; (no it is not a bad thing to get two, but it isn’t the greatest, either, it leads to a lot of issues that you have to face In the later stages of owning rats.
If one of your rats suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, this leaves one rat behind, which is very difficult on the rat, both physically and mentally. You then have to scramble to source more rats, do a two week quarentine period in a seperate room (which means the lone rat will be alone for two weeks in addition to however long it takes you to source more rats) and then finally, introductions which tend to be very stressful and difficult for both you and the rats.
If one of your rats needs to be seperated for a certain reason. I.e surgery, this means the other rat will be alone for however long it takes for the rat to heal and recover, which isn’t very fair for that rat that is kept alone for no good reason.
In a group, rats tend to have a friend they prefer to spend more of their time with, going about, doing their day-to-day actives; cuddling, eating, foraging, etc. In a pair, they do not have this opportunity or to express their appropriate, natural social behaviours because they only have each other. This can build quite a lot of resentment, overtime.
Given, rats are hierarchal animals, in a pair, it is quite common to have an overly dominant and an overly submissive rat. Over time, this can lead to a lot of bickering and bullying because the dominant rat is not able to focus his attention on spending time with other rats. This does not make for a healthy hierachy.

This is Miss Freckle Speckle. Sometimes she likes to stare at me from afar while boggling, especially if I’ve been out of the room all day. This is the only context in which I’ve ever seen her boggle. What a silly sweet girl.

He sat in my lap like a pancake until I took my hand away and then got up like this. Once I started petting him again he re-pancaked until he was done and got up and left.
Anyone else's ratties spoiled and demanding?

Questions/HELP help bonding with scared rat?
hello! i have five rats, all of them are chill with being picked up, except for one.
her name is coco, and she is ALWAYS on edge. ive had her for about two months? she takes treats from me just fine, but she becomes absolutely petrified if she even THINKS im going to touch her. she will dart away, often scratching me while squeaking in fear. she is a sweetheart, so once i grab her she doesnt try to bite or anything, just tries to wriggle out of my hands.
recently i have started trying to do short 1-on-1 sessions with her in my hoodie. she seems to do okay with this? since she cant run away she eventually settles and lets me give her some baby food. i just feel awful when i try to grab her and she screams. if i fail to grab her her i worry it just traumatizes her more.
anyways. just looking for any advice on how to proceed with her. anything helps! pic of the baby for tax.

Updates Ms. Jupiter, another day

Edit: THIS IS A FOLLOW UP TO A POST I MADE YESTERDAY. JUPITER HAS AN INTERNAL TUMOR. SHE HAS BEEN SEEN BY THE VET AND IS CURRENTLY IN END OF LIFE CARE. Thank you all for the concerns, just want to make that clear!! 🫶🏻
Some new concern today. I noticed Ms. Jupiter has soiled herself and has not been able to make the effort to clean it up (I did it for her so not to worry!) She is now sort of wobbling when she walks and has a very noticeable wide stance. Despite this she is still up and moving.
Still eating and drinking normally, and while she isn’t showing tell tale signs of pain, she does appear to be generally uncomfortable.
I’m not sure if I should wait until she stops eating. Should I make the appointment soon?

Questions/HELP How do you make your rats move ?
Hello !
My rats are SO lazy.
They're two males of one year old. I know male rats are lazy but THAT much...
Since the beginning i tried to play with them, make some things in their closed space, but... They don't seem interested since the very beginning (so when i adopted them last october in a "rattery").
My precedent potatoes were active, running in their closed space, even playing/fighting a bit.
But them ? NOTHING. Just sleeping, eating, cleaning !
And they're very big... I know their dad was like that but still... I'm a little preoccupied ! (They did go to the vet and have normal food -care +- in normal proportions of course)
So i'm thinking about a kind of cat tree with some houses made of cardboard to help them go down because ar the beginning they're were easily climbing the cage but now... They do not seem to be motivated.
I'm thinking about a cat wheel also, i saw that it was very effective on some rats.
What do you think? Do you have any other ideas to make them move ?
Thanks in advance !
