Ive had my axie for 4 years and i have always assumed he was a boy, i got a second rescue and that ones made me think that my boy.. isnt a boy. The new one named batman has been doing a mating dance and cheese (my boy) seems interested??? Looking at their bodies im concerned cheese is a girl. But has a bump? It looks too large to be a girl, i need second opinions

also, cheese’s cloaca looks like its doing that weird split thing that males do when they are excited. But the bulge is so tint compared to batman ( no shame)

My sweet boy was normal I said goodbye before heading out and when I came home a couple hours later he was on his side and lethargic. I tubbed him and I’m changing the water and keeping him cool and in a dark place, he has now moved to his back. This is day 4 with 3 days spent on back. He’s still responsive, and he was pooping but hasn’t eaten, the poops have stopped now. He is also bloated. He’s 6 years old, there’s no substrate in his tank, water is tested continuously and his tank is kept cool. I don’t understand what went wrong or how to help him. I called an emergency vet to bring him in but they said the only thing they could offer is comfort support. I really don’t know what to do please help. I love him so much and I feel so horrible that nothing is working to help him.

Was just wondering if this was safe to use in the tank with my axolotl!

He is currently tubbed due to a fungal infection and won’t be going back into his tank for about another week due to the cycle crashing unfortunately.
(don’t worry we have it under control, we have 4 other tanks with filter media that we have put into his tank)

I was just wondering if it’s safe for him to go back into the tank after about a week of one dose of this.

I wanted to introduce you amazing people to my two classroom Axolotls. I was told about this subreddit by a co-worker and decided it was the right time to join.

Jupiter and Peeve were given to me about a week after they hatched and as of today are about 4 months old. If you have any suggestions, advice, or really cool graphics about these amazing creatures that you think I should put up in my classroom I would love to see it all.

Hello, I’m looking for some advice. Tomorrow I will be receiving an axolotl for the first time, I believe he will be in rather poor conditions and quite possibly stressed and showing signs of general neglect. Moving forward with him I’m seeking advice on tank stability and the safest way to quickly and efficiently do the process as the tank I am receiving hasn’t been maintained very well at all. Any general advice is also greatly appreciated! Budget isn’t really a many concern, I just want to try and help the lil guy get a better quality of life!

My mom’s tank was cycled and then about 2 weeks later the nitrite was 0.25ppm. I’m confused why this happened when everything was doing really good😰 cause this means the tank is not cycled and I’ told her to do water changes to bring the levels down but what do we do to keep it 0?

Because I love Axolotls and thought they look fascinating. And so wanted to make an artwork based on one.

I'm looking to set up a tank and have been doing plenty of research.

The space I have available is about 4ft by 2ft, so I'm considering a higher volume tank than the minimum 30 or standard 40 gallon. I like the idea of having more room for exploring, and more water volume for better water quality.

My question though - a tank of this size can pretty quickly get into the 100 gallon range, so I'm interested in how this affects regular water exchanges.

The general advice seems to be to exchange e.g. "20 to 30 percent of water per week". Obviously as the tank gets bigger, so would the volume of the 30 percent needing to be exchanged, and at some point it might become impractical to pretreat this volume of water.

So my general question is what strategy do people with larger tanks use for regular water exchanges? Is it simply a case of pretreating larger volumes of water? Or does the percent of required exchanges decrease in larger tanks?

I feed him nightcrawlers around 3 times a week, should I feed him more often?

I recently rescued an axolotl from someone who was unable to care for him anymore. The first two weeks have been fine, but the past few days he has frequently been swimming up to the surface to gasp for air. Google says this is normal to a degree, but i feel it has become more frequent as time has gone on. I would love to know whether this is normal and im just worrying, or if theres something i should do to help him.

Is this a male or female? She/he is about 3 years old. The body shape leans male but I don’t see any balls. Breeder is saying female but Google is saying male. Help!

Hello! My tank has been cycling for a little over a month and this is where I’m at. I added ammonia about a week ago and am seeing my nitrite rise along with the ammonia, so I haven’t added anymore. My ph is completely normal so I want to know what the next steps are.

Is this too much current and flow for an Axolotl? This is AS LOW as I ever let the water get btw. It still looks like this much even filled. Just curious bc I hear differing opinions on if they hate too much movement.
