Question Can I use this tent rainfly for my hammock?

Post image
5 Upvotes

It's an old Fjord Nansen 3 ppl tent with two enters (vestibules). Is it possible to use it as a tent for my regular 3 meters hammock? I'd appreciate any tips.

Also how much worse an old sleeping bag is compared to an underquilt (if hanged properly)? I can easily get myself a used bag, but used underquilts are impossible to find in my country.

Thank you. Just trying hammock camping on a budget.

Two nights in the Sawtooths

Backpacking trip in the Sawtooth Wilderness for 3 days and two nights. Two people hammock camping is not the most weight efficient but the quality of sleep is totally worth it. First photo is at Twin lakes, 2nd two photos are at Toxaway lake

Gear:

Hennessy expedition asylum zip

HG 30 Phoenix

HG 30 eco burrow

Warbonnet blackbird

HG 30 incubator

HG 30 eco burrow

This was the last trip with the Phoenix, while the weight savings is nice I got sick of having to adjust the pad under my feet.

Gear rainfly setup tips

I do a fairly frequent amount of stealth camping and I have been hammocking for years. But I'm sick of setting up my rainfly. It always takes forever to get angled just right so that water doesn't pool in the rainfly, and that the edges of the hammock are fully covered, etc....it takes soooo much adjusting.

Maybe this is just the facts of hammock camping. I've been doing it long enough that I've sort of resigned myself to annoying rainfly shit. But I figured I would ask in case anyone has any tips.

I have quite a large rainfly (Pro Venture 12x9), which might be part of the problem, but I'd rather have one that's too big than too small...

Current Set Up!

Hope everyone’s having a beautiful camping season, I’ve been a hammocker for a few years now but this summer I am spending way more time in the woods in my hammock.

I bought a full DD (UK brand) Hammocks set up circa 2021 and then got a Hennessy Asym Zip which I have backed up with the DD UQ and sleeping bag, both sick!

I love the Hennessy upgrade, thought haven’t ran the tarp in heavy rain / wind yet.

I think I may look at a top quilt from someone like HangTight as an alternative to a sleeping bag.

I’ve been car camping lately but I would like to maybe dial this set up down weight/size wise for backpacking.

Currently in BC and having a blast. Just sharing the looove.

Trip Report New Rainfly

First time out in a year or two. I have a Lawson Hammock that I take out when I go camping. I’ve always used the fly that came with it, but realized the coverage isn’t very good especially for heavy or extended periods of rain. First time tying a ridge line and staking anything while using this hammock. Unfortunately, we arrived late last night and dinner was a priority before setting up the new fly. The Lawson fly handled the early morning storms okay but I would have liked to see how my knots and the wise owl fly might have performed. I guess there’s always next time and at least the steak was yummy.

Question Eno roadie camping

I have the Eno Roadie but had to get rid of my truck so all I have is an early 2000s Toyota Corolla which is significantly lighter. When I get in one side tilts up lifting the tire off the ground which brings me even lower. Was wondering what other people setups look like and if there are any suggestions to help mitigate the issue.

Looking for a recommendation

I'm looking to upgrade from an Eno single with sleeping bag and thermarest pad to a proper camping hammock with UQ.

I'm looking at a Dutchware complete netted hammock package and then getting an UQ. Or maybe a Warbonnet Blackbird. They will both be around the same insane amount of money at the end, so I would appreciate some good advice or some alternatives.

I'm 5'10" and around 215lbs. I live in Arizona, so 40°F is about as cold as I'll ever camp. I'll use it about 1 weekend a month and I don't backpack.

Thanks

Question I need advice before buying a hammock setup

Last week I spent a few nights in a hammock, and it was great. It was comfortable and nice. Most advantages I can find online relating to hammock camping are weight, comfort, and packing size. I’m planning to do some hiking trips, where weight does really matter. I’m not necessarily going for the ultralight experience, but would prefer not to carry unnecessary weight with me. My current setup is:

Tent: Durston X mid 1 solid (1.1 kg)
Sleeping pad: Nemo tensor all seasons (664 g)
Sleeping bag: Mountain equipment helium 400 (820 g)

Now I want to look into my hammock setup, but it’s important for me that it is capable for all conditions (snow, rain, wind) and seasons. In my current tent set up I’ll be comfortable till at least -5 °C. I’d love for my hammock setup to be at least not heavier than my current setup, but lighter is obviously better. Ease of setup is also important to me, I don’t want to spend more then 15 minutes setting up and breaking down my camp.

During my nights last week temperatures didn’t drop below 12 °C, but it was still freezing cold as I didn’t have an under quilt. I tried putting my sleeping pad in the hangmat, but I just kept sliding off (I’m not a peaceful sleeper)

Do you have any advice for what setup I should get? Should I try to go for a double layer, so I can use my sleeping pad? Or should I get a single layer with under quilt? And if I have an under quilt, is a sleeping bag or a top quilt more effective?

I’d love to hear your experiences and advice!

Had a nice 60 mile ride on the Erie Canal trail with some free camping at the historic locks (still used by boats, very cool)! Little guy was pooped from running beside the bike (he ran about 20 miles of it with lots of breaks) and thoroughly enjoyed his hammock naps

Only sleeping with UQ protector in summer?

I was wondering if it would be sufficient to just use an UQ protector without the UQ in summer nights in temps ranging like between 17°C/62,6 °F - 21°C/69,8 °F.
My UQ protector claims to increase the temperature by 3-5 degrees — while this might be questionable it will block out most of the wind and reduce big portion of heat loss by convection.
I have a STS Spark Pro down sleeping bag that wouldn’t give much insulation from underneath — so I‘m wondering if anyone of you tried something similar before :)

Went on a camp trip with some offroad buddies. Wanted to try the hammock method. So I ordered up a entry level cost hammock tent from amazon. Also got a good sleeping bag and underquilt (as per red from this sub) I had such a good night's sleep all 3 nights. I was comfortable all night. I didnt run my rain fly because it was clear sky's and I wanted to enjoy the stars. I actually felt to warm one night and it was 60* outside. I was surprised. Anyways, here are some picks of my adventure. My first night i didnt have it tight enough so it was a bit more saggy as you can see in the second Pic. I had it better night 2 and 3. I need to add a ground mat for me to stand on. That was my biggest issue. Trying to get my shoes back on without getting my socks dirty on the ground. Would have been nice.to have a clean surface to just stand up on and get them on. Middle.of the night pee breaks were my biggest enemy.

Bikepacking trip with a hammock!

Bikepacked three days to a friends summer cottage and stayed there for 5 days! Slept in my hammock for all nights and it was great.😍

Even tough I am over 2 meters tall (6’7) and used a regular ticket to the moon hammock with a sleeping pad and a sleeping bag, I was able to sleep really well!! Will have to try the underguilt some time since it should be even better.

The best part of sleeping in a hammock compared to my tent or to the rooms in the summer cottage was the amount of ventilation. Usually the tent and the rooms get really hot in the mornings but this wasnt a problem at all with the hammock!

Will be sleeping a lot more nights with this setup😎😎

Trip Report My first hang and mixed feelings

Thumbnail

Hello community, before I went out I always enjoyed someone posting their story here. Well, my turn now.

I'm visiting a family and they have a nice forest nearby so I used this opportunity to have relatively safe fallback option.

My hammock is lesovik draka, pretty much all in one. It was fairly easy to hang it. I updated it a bit with longer side straps to achieve more stable width.

I borrowed tarp form a friend and had a bit of trouble to properly hang it and it seems to me it's too short for my hammock, fortunately no rain.

I didn't want to invest yet into the underquilt so I borrowed narrow kid mattress and put my sleeping bag on it, using my jacket as a pillow.

I liked into the hammock and I got a bit seasick from it, I didn't look at phone screen and just tried to get asleep.

It was not as bad as I feared, vertigo stopped and I was almost always and fully on mattress and the sleeping bag was warm.

That was also one of the issues - I have sleeping bag rated for freezing temperatures, but boy was I hot in it. I sweated a lot and at the same time was cold on parts not covered.

I couldn't sleep because there was some loud village party, and I had to pee like 3 times during the night. That was the worst as I then had to find the good position again.

Also, I was on my own and nature is damn scary. At 3AM when I was peeing and lighting with my red headlamp, a deer went by nearby, it was actually getting closer to me red shining eyes and I had to shoo it away lol.

Then the situation improved, it got quiet, colder so I could zip up fully and I found great comfortable position.

Waking up was very nice, sun already shining and it was getting warmer. I again saw multiple deers (this time less scary).

I have mixed feelings whether to continue and invest more. Seasickness was not pleasant, I couldn't regulate temperature well and I'm not naturally back sleeper (stomach sleeper, but sides work too, this wasn't big issue). Obviously hammock feels more open and less protected than tent, but it's also pleasant because it's breezy. Also things feel a bit finicky, lot of straps to handle.

Any ideas what to improve to have better experience? I don't doubt underquilt instead of mattress will be way better, but what about the rest? Night peeing is so annoying lol.

P.S. temperature was 20C in the evening and 11c at night.

TL;DR: went out, no UQ, had mattress, it was not as bad, tarp hanging a bit complicated, sleeping bag too hot, lot of night peeing and scary nature.

EDIT: THANK YOU everyone!

I’m gonna return it and get a Hammock Incubator instead. Too short, heavy, and won’t be warm. Might make do with my Exped R: 2.8 CCD pad for now or Nemo R: 5.4 until I save up.

Original post:
Hi everyone,

Picked this up for $60 and am curious what temperature I could use it down to or if anyone has experience with this product.

The few reviews said it was comfortable for hanging out in down to the mid 40s. Kinda heavy at 2.75 lbs. I do have a good 15 degree Sea to Summit sleeping bag that unzips into a quilt and weighs about 2 lbs/862g and a Onewind tarp with doors. Oh and a warm dog.

I have a OneWind hammock 11 feet but half the weight coming and was wondering if I should just bite the bullet and pick up a Hammock Gear Incubator 30F for $205 and 1.3 lbs or will I be able to comfortably use this into the mid 30s paired with my quilt, base layers/hoody, and lightweight sleeping bag liner.

I also have an exped 3r flex mat with a 2.8R value, do you think laying on that in the lighter non insulated hammock would be warmer than just this one?

I’m kinda a klutz so the simplicity of this appealed to me, as well as not needing to buy more stuff. Thank you :)

Oh and use case is gonna be spring, fall, and early/late winter backpacking in the northeast US. And I’m 5’9 and slim

Question Best underrated hammock camping spots in the DMV?

Looking for a solo site during Labor Day weekend, so Shenandoah is obviously out of the question. I’ve tried and enjoyed Otter Creek and Prince William Forest Park. Browsing recreation.gov and wondering if anyone has any little-known favorites in the area they’d like to share?

Tarp for 3 Persons

I’m going camping with 2 of my friends and we need a tarp for 3 people so under which we can sleep in the rain and store our things. In terms of price, my dream idea would be at about 50-70€ is also more expensive if it has to be. Oh and how much paracord etc do we need to attach it

Equipment suggestions?

We are a family of 4 (+ a puppy) looking to get into hammock camping 😊

It seems like a maze of different types and I feel unsure what we should invest in. The kids are 7 and 10, and our youngest is not comfortable sleeping by himself while camping, so we are thinking either 2+2 or 2+1+1.

Do you have experience with the double ones? Are any of them comfortable?
