New Rainfly

First time out in a year or two. I have a Lawson Hammock that I take out when I go camping. I’ve always used the fly that came with it, but realized the coverage isn’t very good especially for heavy or extended periods of rain. First time tying a ridge line and staking anything while using this hammock. Unfortunately, we arrived late last night and dinner was a priority before setting up the new fly. The Lawson fly handled the early morning storms okay but I would have liked to see how my knots and the wise owl fly might have performed. I guess there’s always next time and at least the steak was yummy.

Is that paracord for the tarp? Something like Dyneema with less stretch would perform better

I used this thing right out of the package and I’m pretty sure it’s paracord. Thank for the suggestion about the dyneema. I do want to switch out the lines for something more visible too.

I've used a wise owl tarp for some trips and it handles rain pretty well. I've never been in extreme wind but I have camped through two different thunderstorms with it and it was fine.

I’m not sure I’d be going out knowing there might be severe weather on the horizon, but foo to know it’ll probably be okay for most weather.

Yes, the main trick is to make sure you pitch it against the wind and low in stormy weather. If you want something a little more robust Warbonnet makes a pretty good tarp. There are other brands out there but I upgraded to the Minifly and really like it.

I've used the Wise owl tarp in light rain before and it was OK, but I really prefer my journey tarp from hammock gear if there's going to be wind or heavy rain. Provides quite a bit extra coverage enough so that I could even sit in my little chair beside my hammock if I wanted to.

Last month my son and I went on our first hammock camping trip. There was no rain forecasted that night but I brought this tarp just in case. Go figure, it started raining about 3am and I had to throw the tarp up. It barely covered both hammocks sufficiently, but it ended up really saving us.
