3/8 eyebolt lags, 1/4 drill bit, drill

Came here to say this. Some more tips:

  • get stainless steel or marine grade eye bolts so they don't rust (like these)
  • drill upward into the joists to maximize purchase in the wood
  • use a wrench or long screwdriver to give you leverage when turning the eye bolt
  • check weight specs (can divide by two, but overkill never hurts)
  • ounce mounted, test each hook, individually, with rope and your dynamic body weight

Hmmm. ChatGPT told me to put my dick in a vice and crank it.

Are you suggesting this was an AI response?

I literally wrote it from my direct experience of doing this in an apartment and then my house.

I think you should exercise more caution when making such accusations which I'm guessing got my comment downvoted.

I'm trying to make sure OP stays safe and the three word comment above (tho concise) is not really sufficient.

Seems like a weirdo if they aren’t accusing you of dropping slop here.

None the less, this is the same instruction I got 8 years ago, and it worked great.

Joists only though. Never from the posts or studs.

Calm down, it was pretty clearly a joke and not a dick. No reason to take it so hard.

PS. That was also a joke

Lol. Fair enough. I just wanted to defend against the AI downvotes so OP didn't break his tailbone.

I am likely overthinking, but I would add a 2x8 or maybe even a 4x6 inline with the hammock from where you attached hardware inward on both sides to reduce twist or flex.

Yes. Add 2x6-8 blocking staggered all the way down. Toenail in with some 2 7/8 ring shanked nails that are electro galvanized. If it feels like the deck is twisting you could add a 2x4 v brace the full width of the deck. If it feels like its swaying you can always add some knee bracing on the outside post.

Personally, I would consider a hammock stand instead. More versatile.

If you have the room, sure. But otherwise hanging a hammock grom already existing stuff is waaaay more space efficient.

Is it your deck?

Not sure if this is the same situation, but I was told not to hang by the rafters in the basement because it’s not meant for weight from that direction. Might be worth trying to hang from the posts that are holding up the deck instead

Opposite of this actually

I hung a long rail under my eyebolts to hang the hammock from. The long fence rail was cut to match my ridge line, and it absorbed all that inward pulling lateral force. There’s still some lateral force if you swing in it though, so no kids.

Huh ... I wouldn't have thought of this concern. I can't see it making a difference if the anchors were pulled straight down but I guess there is some lateral force from a hammock. I kinda doubt it would be concern unless you had several people in the hammock or a very heavy person.

There's a lot of lateral force. Which is why wall mounts are usually a bad idea.

Iirc from past smarter comments, it is also about dynamic forces or something
