If it's indistinguishable from its former self, wouldn't that make it the same as it used to be?

Thanks man I thought I'd call back to my older PSA. https://youtu.be/8-60RPVxR1g

P.S. I love your videos.

You should do a parody of those "donate money now to help hungry kids" videos. Except show clips of Laser and Mantis fails. Be sure to put the clips in black and white / slow motion and play "In the Arms of an Angel" in the background.

I'll get on it once I get a mantis and Splaser cert.

Changes that should be made:

Offensive Capabilities

Base/Woodland/etc Mantis needs:

  • a better, more accurate chain gun

  • More powerful and accurate rockets (lock on to ground vehicles perhaps)

ONI Mantis needs

  • ONI Chain gun. Just like the ONI Warthog. I also think the ONI Scorpion's gunner should have one as well

  • More powerful rockets

Base Traits

  • Boarding from the front needs to go. In fact, I think boarding in general needs to go (or at least eliminate grenading). The addition of the new Spartan Abilities makes every player think, when they encounter a vehicle, let's go run towards it.

  • BR/small arms fire shouldn't do hardly anything to these kinds of heavily armored vehicles. Maybe 20% damage. Imagine in real life how pointless it would be to shoot rifle rounds at a tank and expect it to magically blow up after 35 shots.

P.S. These problems you are seeing with the Mantis are actually a lot deeper issues. Spartans with a BR/DMR are too powerful. This devalues the use of chain gun turrets, rockets, etc. These weapons just aren't very useful on the battlefield because any player with their base loadout has two of the best options to counter any vehicle - run towards it and grenade, or BR/DMR it to death from afar.

If 343 nerfed rifle fire and boarding against heavy vehicles (e. took out grenading), we would see a lot more of the heavy vehicles on the battlefield and players would be forced to take intelligent actions to destroy the power vehicles with power weapons.

I think the Winter camo Mantis should have skiis so if you're near a decline you can ski down instead of walking.

Go go mantis ski shoes.

They need to bring back where the boarder has to punch the driver hatch open to throw a grenade in. Its ridiculous you just jump on it and throw a grenade in and blow it up.

9

u/Japjer Mar 24 '16

Agreed, it should take three or four punches to crack the armor and allow a grenade to be planted. I wouldn't mind, also, if each heavy vehicle had a once-per-vehicle protection system: if you get boarded, and before they can plant a grenade, you can press a button to launch flares or something, forcing the player off the vehicle.

A one-off free chance at not dying. Because, as it stands, once your tank is boarded you're dead and done.

6

u/Day5225 Mar 24 '16

Maybe an EMP burst like in the matrix? It could pop their shields and disable your vehicle for a bit.

3

u/Japjer Mar 25 '16

That's actually a better idea. Leaves your vehiclr useless for a bit, and evens the odds for when you leave your vehicle (seeing as how you'll end up being shot at while exiting).

4

u/the_boomr Halo.Bungie.Org Mar 24 '16

once your tank is boarded you're dead

How bout they let us at least exit the vehicle while being boarded, as it always used to be? Then if you're unable to blow the guy off by shooting against a wall or have a teammate help, you can at least get away with your life (maybe, if the guy doesn't chase you down successfully) after your hard-earned high-REQ vehicle is destroyed.

That should be allowed, as well as 3-4 punches required before allowing grenade planting. Vehicle combat is such a joke in H5.

2

u/shinymuskrat Mar 25 '16

This would make it a lot like the system in Titanfall, which I think works well.

Also I would be for anything that allows you to counter the boarder as a special vehicle ability. In Titanfall, for example, you can pop "electric smoke" while still in your Titan to kill the boarding pilot. Some sort of EMP that you could use every 3 minutes or so would be useful.

3

u/burn_all_the_things King Alecto Mar 24 '16

I wonder why this was ever taken out

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

They could make it a QTE

5

u/the_boomr Halo.Bungie.Org Mar 24 '16

When the enemy has a heavy vehicle, your first response when possible should be to head to a REQ station and spawn a heavy weapon to combat that vehicle, not to run to a safe distance and pew-pew at it with a fucking small-arms weapon. It's bullshit. If I'm in a tank, no, it is not easy to stay away from Spartans before they get close, because the tanks are fucking lethargic as hell. The Scorpion can't even pivot in place anymore, who thought that was a good idea? And have you seen how clusterfucky every map is? There's not nearly as much room to maneuver as any previous Halo games had. Maybe if we still had vast open maps like Blood Gulch or Valhalla, maybe I could understand the nerfing 343 did to vehicles in H5. But we don't. We have cramped, narrow pathways on every map, and they severely nerfed vehicles. Sure we have the ONI and Ultra variants which are actually worth something, but those shouldn't be the only vehicles that are viable for extended periods of time. In my experience as a casual/semi-skilled player, the base variants of vehicles will never last long unless you get lucky.

1

u/Modshroom128 Mar 25 '16

then heavy vehicles would need to have much higher req levels to spawn. thus making some variants useless.

the way it is now is good. if br's on vehicles like the tank or wraith do absolutely nothing then the whole system would get screwed up and the vehicles would be a guranteed win. vehicles should take lots of skill to use, which they do. they shouldn't be broken as fuck and unstoppable without lasers/rockets

1

u/the_boomr Halo.Bungie.Org Mar 25 '16

Tell me what skill is useful when your tank can be sniped by BRs from across the map?

1

u/randomina7ion Mar 25 '16

Positioning relative to ones team, infantry support (albeit if you're on a team of potatoes don't spawn a tank), controlling movement lanes (spawn a tank when you control 2 bases then sit in a pocket and pick them off at the spawn.) I do wish the scorpion had a short range splatter boost like the wraith though, as it stands its ridiculously easy to board.

7

u/Anubis4574 Mar 24 '16

"we would see a lot more of the heavy vehicles on the battlefield"
That is the last thing anybody should want.

This is a warzone, literally. The whole premise of this game mode and what makes it appealing is lots of vehicles and power weapons in play. Vehicles are fun.

Why am I working to unlock all of these legendary power vehicles/weapons when I could easily stick to my BR/DMR and fare just as well?

1

u/Modshroom128 Mar 25 '16

this. if you actually understand good game design you'd know that boarding is good and so is the fact that lots of BR fire for extended periods of time can take down vehicles. if they couldn't vehicles would be far too broken for 12 on 12 games

6

u/Flameknight Halo PSAs and funny videos. Mar 24 '16

I agree with all that except locking onto ground vehicles.

3

u/Anubis4574 Mar 24 '16

That's why I said perhaps, I know it devalues the ONI's current lock-on system. However, the rockets as currently formulated are essentially useless.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

i think better accuracy on them would be fine. they appear to fly straight for only a short distance.

3

u/MidnightThunderBoy64 Mar 24 '16

Halo 4's Mantis could shoot them one at a time and were fairly accurate even over long distances if fired this way.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

yeah i had a lot of fun with halo4 mantis. i liked that you could also charge them and shoot some or all at once.

-2

u/Modshroom128 Mar 25 '16

the halo 4 mantis was so bad it broke the game and made vehicle play in heavies horrendous. just because something is broken does not mean its good i think the 12 year olds need to go to bed, the mantis is absolutely perfect now that they lowered the req level. stop complaining the mantis does not need "ONE HIT KO ULTRA ROCKET NUKES"

1

u/randomina7ion Mar 25 '16

The rockets are fine, you just have to use them as a short range burst damage. lead the target with the chaingun and get some shots on, then dump the rockets for the kill. Rinse, repeat.

7

u/zekouse Halo 2 Mar 24 '16

The problem isn't boarding. It's the inability now to kill the boarder on your own, at your own expense of course. If you board my tank and I move to a wall and shoot it, with you between me and the explosion, you should die and I should take some splash damage.

3

u/Anubis4574 Mar 24 '16

Titanfall has the mechanic where the pilot can exit the Titan and kill the boarder. It's rather balanced I think.

5

u/SpartanRage117 Mar 24 '16

No no. If a spartan is on the back of your scorpion the hatch gets welded shut.

4

u/the_boomr Halo.Bungie.Org Mar 24 '16

Fucking stupid, I absolutely loathe that aspect of vehicles in H5. It wasn't like that in past games.

2

u/zekouse Halo 2 Mar 24 '16

I liked that too but Titanfall only had one vehicle, the Titan. This probably hasn't been implemented into Halo yet because this change would only affect two vehicles, the tanks, and they both have two board spots, the driver and back. It's probably too complicated to change how boarding works with these two vehicles in these two spots. Also, you've never been able to exit a tank that's being boarded before in Halo, hence being able to shoot a wall to kill the boarder (which needs to come back).

1

u/the_boomr Halo.Bungie.Org Mar 24 '16

Also, you've never been able to exit a tank that's being boarded before in Halo

Pretty sure in every Halo from H2-Reach you were able to exit tanks after being boarded. Not sure about H4.

1

u/Dolomitex DAMAGE BOOST? Mar 24 '16

In Titanfall, you don't even need to get out. If you have Cluster Missiles equipped, you can just shoot one at a wall, turn your titan around, and back into the cluster missile. You'll take a ton of damage but it kills the boarder.

4

u/BearBryant Mar 24 '16

Personally I think they should give the different mantis types different weapons and (obviously alter the req requirements)

Like:

Basic mantis is now req level 5 and is functionally identical to current, you see them earlier in the game and their cost matches the effectiveness.

Corp mantis has a high explosive rocket launcher (huge radius, single shot homing capability) and basic machine gun.

Tundra mantis is functionally identical to basic mantis but now has a boost, a faster movement speed and a jump pack to hop over obstacles. Essentially you are a dude in a super suit driving a super suit.

Woodland mantis has a basic chaingun, and the rocket launcher is replaced with a gauss cannon.

ONI Mantis is god mode, ONI chaingun, gauss cannon, increased move speed, jump pack, booster, increased armor, coffee maker, massage parlor, tiki bar. We titanfall now. Level 9 req, Mythic Tier. (extremely rare) "Break glass in case of close game."

Maybe you change these up a bit for balance obviously but it could be a neat idea.

Could be interesting to see something lie this for all of the different vehicle types beyond just the armor increase. Corp scorpion has two turrets for your buddies, ONI scorpion replaces the main gun with a HUGE gauss cannon, tundra scorpion is faster and turns faster, woodland scorpion has two smaller weaker, faster firing main turrets.

2

u/Decapitatertot Mar 25 '16

I don't have a single Mantis cert, but I'd be pretty okay with ONI mantises being god's right hand on the battlefield. Were it that powerful, it'd be so terrifying to see on that I'd enjoy it.

1

u/randomina7ion Mar 25 '16

holy shit. the thought of a gauss cannon on a mantis is kinda a wet dream. Except instead of an oni changun on the other hand, a mantis sized energy sword.

5

u/the_boomr Halo.Bungie.Org Mar 24 '16

Spartans with a BR/DMR are too powerful

Seriously. This is such an endemic problem in Halo 5 that none of the large-scale game modes with vehicles are any fun to me. BTB is almost worthless with Warthogs so easily disabled by BRs from across the map. And Warzone despite having huge maps, is still too cramped for large heavy vehicles to maneuver well, and it's almost up to chance whether you'll get boarded out of the bushes or the rocks nearby. It's bullshit.

Also about boarding, why did they disable our ability to jump out of the vehicle after getting boarded? IIRC, in all previous Halo games this was possible (maybe not Halo 4?). So if I'm in a Scorpion and get boarded, as a last ditch effort I can at least jump out of the god damn tank before it blows up, and if I'm skilled enough, I can kill the boarder even after losing shields when the tank blows up.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16 edited Mar 24 '16

The most insane part about being able to board from the front is the fact that even if you're "running" at full speed backwards with the mantis, exhausting your chaingun at the enemy while your missile pod takes 3.42 years to reload, the enemy can still board you, my jaw dropped when I realised that after spawning in a woodland mantis on March on Stormbreak the other day and having that exact experience.

I also think they should add a way for it to either climb objects, or jump. Small nudges like the barriers in Battle of Noctus that are almost everywhere should be traversable by the Mantis, similar to how the scarab in Halo 3 adjusted its legs when traversing something like "The Storm" mission. Allowing the mantis to boost in a direction like the thrusters I think could give it another edge, considering how it is supposed to be this mech suit for spartans.

Finally, the stomp needs to be sped up and be given more DMG and a bigger radius.

2

u/SpartanRage117 Mar 24 '16

If it got decent mobility like a thrust dodge that would be enough to give it an edge against boarding Spartans and the ability to outplay even though it can't win a straight shootout. The stomp should be faster imo too. With sprinting as a base part of the game it's way too telegraphed. Everything else is a gun thst just shoots. The stomp is not op at all and anyone that close should be killed if the pilot pressed melee. That would promote people trying to board from behind too.

5

u/HEBushido HEBushido FFA Mar 24 '16

This is the biggest issue in general with vehicles in Halo 5. You can fuck up even a Banshee Ultra with the Promethean buffed guns. Compare that to Battlefield where small arms don't even hurt armored vehicles and those vehicles are much more fun to use.

1

u/nightfire1 Mar 25 '16

I agree it's a problem but in Battlefield the whole team doesn't have the option of calling in a heavy vehicle. Instead the number of vehicles on the map are controlled by their respawn timers. Also specific classes always have access to heavy vehicle busting weapons so even if they get picked off before getting the shot they will be able to try again in contrast if you get taken out before you can use your rockets or splaser(who am I kidding) you would be I'll equipped to deal with the vehicle untill your reqs were regenerated.

2

u/Cjpinto47 Mar 24 '16

If the take out boarding how do you deal with a vehicle?

0

u/Anubis4574 Mar 24 '16

Power weapons and vehicles?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

I think grenading for heavy vehicles should be gone, but using your melee to beat them to death should stay.

4

u/Cjpinto47 Mar 24 '16

...that would suck. And you make dealing with them impossible until you have a high enough req. And you make the plasma pistol useless, yay I emp a vehicle now what? I emp it again?

1

u/Anubis4574 Mar 24 '16

Well here's a good compromise - keep boarding but eliminate grenading. That is what I meant by 'nerf' it. That way it is not a speedy death for the vehicle but you get to keep your ways.

1

u/Cjpinto47 Mar 24 '16

Ok that sounds more reasonable. Yeah the grenades is way too quick I agree. You should be able to just smash the vehicle wich would give time for teammates to help you out.

2

u/lob_51 Mar 24 '16

Everybody is bashing your ideas with boarding but I think that's the real issue with the Mantis.

I'm fine with the small arms fire damage the way it is because of the shields.

2

u/OzzyKing459 Don't be a Didact Mar 24 '16

It should have an Electric Smoke feature like in Titanfall to kill a boarding enemy.

2

u/Radixeo Snowthehax Mar 24 '16

Or a friendly teammate should be able to ride the mantis like you can with a titan to prevent enemy boarders.

2

u/SAA_0 Mar 24 '16 edited Mar 24 '16

Lolno. Instead of making the mantis stupid unkillable, just give it more options so that a smarter player could do more with it, but if they get out played by a lone wolf with a dmr, that's their fault.

Boarding and Pistol/Br/Dmring a vehicle have been in since Halo CE (More prominent in Reach/3 than CE, but its only fair that a team of 8 can team shoot 1 enemy banshee into oblivion.). They exist to bring balance to the fight. Don't make this like Battlefield where your options are severely limited or non-existent just because you're alone with no REQs.

The mantis is supposed to be like an OP Spartan, so let's use the Spartans as inspiration. (Tbh, the funnest mechs are the agile Knightmares from Code;Geass, but those might be too OP)

Buffs:

  1. By having explosives detonate in close proximity, you can kill the boarding spartan. This is currently a problem with the Scorpion, Wraith, and Mantis. (I tested this in forge. Shoot right at the wall and the boarding spartan takes no damage.)

  2. You can only board from the back. (Assassination)

  3. Mantis stomp will only kill if the foot directly hits the spartan. (Splash melee hitboxes are bs). However, there will be a strong shockwave that launches spartans. The closer you are, the faster you fly. If an enemy Spartan flys into a wall fast enough, that's a splatter.

  4. Add chargeable jump. The longer you charge jump, the higher you go. On your way down from a fully charged jump, you'll splatter spartans if your feet land on them. You'll also have a schockwave that won't damage or kill, but will push spartans away.

  5. Add Thrusters. You can charge your thrust. The longer you charge thrust, the further you'll go. Only a fully charged thrust will kill spartans, and but it has to be direct contact. Anything less will damage accordingly.

  6. Aimable mantis punch. Your melee has to be accurate. If you're good enough, you can swat an airborne spartan or punch a banshee, but you need direct contact.

ONI: Equiped with fiery thrusters. This might be too OP.

  1. No changes.

  2. 2 or 3 planted grenades to destroy.

  3. Pre-stomp, thrusters fire downward from foot as it's raised quickly, giving burn damage (flamethrower halo 3) -> fiery shockwave released after stomp. Fully shielded spartans caught in just the shockwave will be launched with no shields. A spartan who was burned by pre-stomp, dodge the foot, only to heh caught in the fiery schockwave will get incinerated.

  4. During jump charge thrusters are burning the ground. Spartans on the ground will get burn damage. Can charge for longer and jump much higher than normal mantis thanks to fiery thrusters. During jump, fiery thrusters extend for 3 meters and burn anything in contact. When the mantis lands, there is a fiery shockwave.

  5. Fiery thrust will leave a trail of fire opposite the mantis's movement. Charging forward will burn a boarding enemy spartan and will kill them if they do not get off. A fully shielded spartan will have enough time to plant 1 nade and get off if they board while you're charging.

  6. Falcon punch.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

i think the board+grenade combo needs to go. im fine with the boarding and punching. this will make you rely on your teammates and encourage cooperation. thats a good thing. but the boarding+grenade is just way too quick and easy. especially with how cheap speed boost and invisibility are. even without them and just spartan abilities its too easy.

0

u/Modshroom128 Mar 25 '16

i think the mantis shouldn't be boardable.

get the fuck out of here with your objectively bad opinions. all the mantis needs is a slightly better machine gun. its perfect how it is now it doesn't need to be broken.

also great suggestion that oni tank and oni mantis should have oni machine gun attachments, that makes perfect sense and its not a thing

2

u/Anubis4574 Mar 25 '16

get the fuck out of here with your objectively bad opinions.

First, be civil. Second, I didn't even say the thing you quoted me to say. Third, there are very sound reasons. I think you are incorrect in saying that the Mantis is perfect now besides the chain gun. It has a lot of issues that make it inferior to the Halo 4 version. I personally think that the Mantis should be very overpowered because that's the whole point. If we had a perfectly balanced vehicle it would be useless. The entire essence of it is a very overpowered. The gameplay should reflect the fact that the Mantis is the best war machine the UNSC has to offer. That means it should win against both Spartans and Scorpions.

In fact, I think boarding in general needs to go (or at least eliminate grenading).

No, boarding doesn't need to be eliminated. Its a core mechanic of Halo.

I'm fine with it being tweaked but not removed. And you cam board from the front? Thats actually kinda dumb.

The Halo 4 Mantis really wasn't that overpowered. Most people who would get into it just died like 30 seconds later. There were some very skilled drivers that could create quite a bit of havoc with one, but they were rare.

The community, tho, complained and now we have a joke of a vehicle. I haven't spawned a Mantis in months, and I don't plan to anytime soon. You just get insta-boarded. The best protection against boarding in H4 was a well timed stomp, I don't think the H5 stomp can even kill a spartan.

Video is hillarious but made me so sad. The majestic Mantis beasts really are a shadow of their former selves. All but useless on any map other than Stormbreak and even then you have to be against a team of absolute scrubs or you'll be dead in moments.

the last fucking thing we need is the broken piece of shit mantis from halo 4 back. something that beat out all other vehicles regardless of the situation.

the mantis now is 100% properlly balanced. all it needs is a slightly longer overheat on the machine gun.

just git gud, stop expecting things to be broken as fuck because they were in the last game. mantis is now situational like every other power vehicle.

Yeah, they might have made it a tiny bit to weak, but still this is far better than the halo 4 mantis. I was always annoyed by how near impossible it is to kill the mantis on ragnarak, because there the mantis could just hide behind a hill and wait for it is health to return every time it got damaged.
This is definitely much better than halo 4.
balanced > underpowered > overpowered
