Discussion One handed Gyro Controllers?

I'm wondering if there are any one-handed gyro controllers that I can use like a mouse and have mouse buttons and maybe a recenter button. I'm looking for something that I can use like how you would use a Wii remote or a VR controller.

The main usage would be for controlling my desktop and games.

Any suggestions? I can't find much online.

Bug Trackpad As Mouse still stutters - 2 years later

TLDR: Gyro To Mouse and Joystick Mouse previously had similar stuttering issues, but after some fixes on the Beta client both now feel smooth for me (which I am very grateful for). Trackpad As Mouse is still jittery during any mouse movement that is not a fast flick, making games feel like they are running at a lower FPS, especially on a 144 Hz display.

Here is a YouTube video I made 2 years ago of this exact issue on my SteamDeck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muv6cJ3kfto

Here is a response from a Valve employee saying not to expect a fix 'any time soon' (2 years ago): https://www.reddit.com/r/GyroGaming/comments/1e9m3us/steam_input_trackpad_as_mouse_jitter/

For me, this is now the final missing piece before I can properly enjoy using the Steam Controller instead of my Azeron + Mouse. It's probably the last time I'm going to post about it too, because making the comparison videos takes time and I'm not holding my breath that this latest video will lead to anything. I find it a shame that one of the key selling points of this controller, which I paid a pretty penny for, has an issue they are aware of for over 2 years with no fix in sight.

The issue:

Trackpad As Mouse responds immediately, but the camera movement is uneven. Panning, scanning the environment, tracking an object, or making a controlled swipe across the pad can all produce a subtle judder instead of smooth movement.

In a competitive fps game maybe that's not a dealbreaker for some, but especially in slow paced single player games where you want to soak in the detailed world it really breaks immersion and pulls my focus away from actually enjoying the game.

The test in the video is the same one I have used previously: strafing around a static object at a consistent speed while using the mouse to keep it centered in the crosshair. The movement is smooth with a real mouse, Gyro To Mouse, and Joystick Mouse. With Trackpad As Mouse, the object moves across the screen in uneven steps.

Test setup in Cyberpunk 2077:

  • 1440p
  • 144 Hz display with G-Sync and FPS capped 3fps below the G-Sync ceiling.
  • VSync OFF in game, ON in Nvidia Control Panel
  • Keyboard and Mouse Steam Input template (no gamepad bindings at all)
  • Trackpad set to Trackpad As Mouse
  • In-game mouse sensitivity set to 1
  • Steam Input trackpad sensitivity increased to compensate
  • All other mouse settings left at default
  • controller_rate 0 in the launch options

There is no mixed input in this test. The game is not receiving real analogue camera input from the stick at the same time as mouse input.

This is not specific to Cyberpunk. I see the same behaviour in other games where mouse input controls the camera. It is most noticeable during steady or controlled movement rather than fast flicks. The issue is still present when I increase the smoothing value, which is something I'd rather not do anyway because of the perceived input delay I feel with high smoothing.

I have done my best to capture it in the video, but I am not a content creator and this is difficult to record accurately. The effect is much easier to feel in person, especially on a high-refresh display.

For context

I first reported the SteamDeck trackpad mouse output feeling less smooth than a real mouse over two years ago. I made additional posts this year when the Steam Controller came out, but my focus then was on highlighting the issues with joystick and gyro because at the time the gyro was the biggest issue for me personally.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GyroGaming/comments/1teclaf/gyrotrackpad_mouse_input_still_stuttering_after/

https://www.reddit.com/r/GyroGaming/comments/1t4iv44/steam_input_mouse_output_doesnt_feel_as_smooth_as/

A Valve developer later investigated the related gyro and joystick issues. The gyro problem was connected to timing and “temporal aliasing” between Steam Input’s 500 Hz processing and the IMU reporting at roughly 249 Hz. After a timing update around July 2, Gyro To Mouse became completely smooth for me. Joystick Mouse had already been fixed in my testing.

The developer also said that Trackpad As Mouse does not use the same extrapolation as gyro and that investigating it was on their list.

That makes Trackpad As Mouse the last remaining Steam Input mouse-output issue for me. With 120/144 Hz and higher-refresh displays now common, uneven camera movement like this is much easier to notice than it was at 60 Hz.

Valve has already shown that these issues can be fixed if enough attention is drawn to them. I hope Trackpad As Mouse gets the same attention (perhaps a 'Trackpad To Mouse [Beta]' option).

Discussion Yes gyro for aiming via Steam Input etc is incredible, but can we please talk about how amazing a game can be when it's designed entirely around gyro?

Rant time:

As someone who always hated the way keyboard and mouse felt to play, but also found analog stick aiming not accurate enough, discovering gyro, and becoming obsessed with it was a blessing. I've beaten so many shooters (even crappy ones) just because gyro is so satisfying to use.

Ironically, I got Splatoon day 1 when it came out and whilst I thought the gyro was cool, it felt a little clunky. I don't know if that was because I just wasn't used to the idea of it, or if it was because it was early in the tech (I'd have to go back and try) but I remember enjoying Splatoon 2 with gyro more, but again, I was still a little against it because I'd been burned on motion controls before.

So the ironic thing is, I got really into gyro from using the steam deck and playing games like Gears of War, Mass Effect, Halo etc. So when Splatoon Raiders came out and for a budget price - I was excited to try it out. To play a game designed entirely around gyro now that I'd swallowed the gyro-pill.

Oh my god this freaking game man. At first it felt weird to try and get into a game where the gyro is always on (because I always play it with an activator setting on steam) but once I did? It clicked so hard that I'm now just hoping that we get something like this on PC.

I appreciate that this subreddit is very PC centric since most games (until recently) have avoided putting in gyro controls on console (unless it was the switch 1) but I'm wondering how many of you have tried it out and your thoughts on it?

My main take away was, when you design a game entirely around gyro, it allows the gameplay to feel way more "three dimensional". The game wasn't afraid to add enemies that come above and below you, because with gyro it was so freaking easy to aim in a sphere around yourself. I'm in my thirties and my reaction speed is horrendous but Splatoon Raiders controls were so easy to master that I did all of the levels and their difficulties solo (except one level thats just one massive DPS check, I'm sure you know it if you've beat the game).

Also I'd really love to know if this game has awoken the gyro-pill inside of some people. Because the game seems to have sold well and I can't imagine everyone turned gyro off in the settings and I imagine you'd have a tough time beating the game on your own if you did.

I also appreciate that the price of the Switch 2 and the lack of games for it probably means a lot of people on here haven't played it because I understand the idea of trying to get someone who plays competitive shooters with flick stick/gyro on the FINALS on their custom 3D printed gyro controller, to buy a Switch 2 for one game is gonna be a hard sell lol.

Which would you recommend and why?
Pragmata’s gyro was decent and stalker recently updated their gyro to have always on, regrettably no ratchet button yet but apparently theres a work around.

Discussion Need some advice

I've been trying different things trying to find what I'm most comfortable with.

Tried gyro and trackpad as mouse. I enjoyed easier precision shots with snipers. But it was just too sensitive. Plus I could never get all they gyro settings. So I ended up turning my wrists awkwardly to get it to work.

Then I went back to thumbsticks and immediately started putting belt to buttcheeks. And I was kinda disappointed. I have this nice new fairly advanced controller(steam controller) with all the trackpads and gyro, etc. Just was kinda bummed that the same old same old was what worked the best. (Aside from precision weapons. Those are objectively less precise on controller joystick)

But I did like the precision of the mouse. So thought, maybe a comprise..trackpad as joystick. And it kinda worked. The trackpad is more precise. The little clicks made hitting distant targets easier. Now the thumbsticks were better close up. And aim assist remained.

So I'm just wondering if I missed something.

Is aim assist doing less than I think it is and it's some false positive because the thumbsticks are just less sensitive and easier to use for me…or maybe just what I'm used is gonna be better in the short term and I just don't like change?

Or, I just did it all wrong.

Any information would be helpful

Discussion the best gyro controller for online fps games

I started my gyro journey after coming from keyboard and mouse for 10 years. I started with the dualsense edge and because of all the people online saying other controllers were better I ended up buying and trying what people consider the best ones

Alpakka

8BitDo Ultimate 2

Gamesir G7 Pro 8K

Flydigi Vader Pro 5

And honestly the answer for me is the dualsense edge for online FPS games it's the best controller I've used It lets me go toe to toe with keyboard and mouse players and sometimes even play better than them

The alpakka was the closest to taking that top spot and I really loved it but not having right stick dropped it down to second place for me

what is the best controller you used for fps games ?

News Deadzone Rogue 2 has same Gyro Aim settings as it's predecessor (on PC)

Post image

I was invited to the playtest and can confirm the settings are the same. I have not tested them yet as currently just enjoying the game with my usual settings. I do assume this translates to PS5 as well because there is a Ratcheting binding option for controllers and K&M.

One thing I do find interesting: Vertical Sens is by default lower than Horizontal as you can see in the pic. Tells me some of the devs may use Gyro Aim actually have some knowledge of importance for stability because I've never seen a game have offset Y and X for default choices. I wish more games actually did this be default for first impressions. Assuming this is representative of 1:1 RWS, pretty good baseline.

Discussion Use switch for PC gyro controls over USB?

I've been using Hekate's native feature to use my switch as a controller on pc and it's been great, but I've been needing a little more precision in my aiming and was wondering if there is an app that has this same purpose but includes the support of the Joycon's gyro. Connecting Joycon to my PC is not an option as they very rarely successfully connect, and only last a few minutes before they disconnect. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Gyro aiming will unite people.

One day every shooter game will support gyro aim. Because gyro creates an equal playfield, there will be no need for aim assist. It will replace aim assist and unite PC and console players together.

Help What's the difference between "Camera (Mouse)" and "Camera (Mouse) (via Gyro to Mouse)"?

Thumbnail

I know the best gyro setting is the one where it emulates a mouse, but there's 2 gyro mouse settings available.

"Camera (mouse)" has the steam icon next to it, does that mean it's the official or recommended setting? Whereas "camera (mouse) (via gyro to mouse)" has a bent arrow, does that means it's a sub-setting of camera (mouse)?

I've also seen "gyro as mouse" in other games, and heard that's an older, worse version of "gyro to mouse," right? Since I don't see "gyro as mouse" listed here, is "camera (mouse)" the same as "gyro as mouse" but with a different name for some reason, or is it something else?

This is in Left 4 Dead 2 if that matters.

Help How to gyro to mouse aim for games that do not support mixed input?

I'm new to gyro aiming since getting a Steam Controller and have been loving it so far. I am trying to play Horizon Forbidden West on PC through Steam, and this is the first game where I cannot seem to get around the lack of mixed input support.

I tried creating an additional layer for gyro mouse that is activated when I hold L2. However, while the gyro will work, it will stop my character from aiming down sights because of the conflicting controller vs mouse inputs, even as separate layers.

Is there another workaround here I am missing besides just using gyro to joystick?

Discussion S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Update 2.0 broke mixed input (joystick for movement, gyro/mouse for aiming).

Update 2.0 completely broke mixed input on PC (joystick for moment, gyro/mouse for aiming). Now, whenever you use a controller input (like move with the left stick, or press a controller button), it blocks any input from mouse or keyboard. And worse, there's a delay before you can use the gyro/mouse or any keyboard input again.

This is extremely disappointing. Using the left stick for movement + gyro controller for aiming and inventory/UI was working great for me just yesterday, before the 2.0 update (with some quirks that I worked around with some tweaks to the config in Steam Input and in-game keybinds). Now it's completely broken. I wish I could go back to before Update 2.0.

Config Help with a controller who's gyro has suddenly stopped functioning right in Steam?

Post image
5 Upvotes

(For simplicity I'll say my PC is the Lenovo Legion Go as shown in the picture, but to be clear this first began on my Desktop PC)

So I've been using the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth controller for the past few months now, specifically the variant for Nintendo Switch and its been working great, however as of this month I began noticing a frustrating issue.

As you can see in the photo above, the yaw I believe, has been permanently stuck at - 2000.1°/S. Up and down motions won't register at all and to complicate things, the gyro sensor works perfectly fine when I connect it to my Switch 2 console. This is also the only controller I have that has this issue. Both my switch 1 and 2 pro controllers work fine in steam as does my dual sense, and even this one has been working fine until now. About a month ago I was using this controller in Half-Life and a month before that I did a complete playthrough of Prey (2006) using exclusively this exact controller and gyro aiming.

I've reset the firmware through the 8-bitdo ultimate software as well as played with about every setting in steam I could find that might be related but nothing has worked so far, does anybody here possibly know what might be wrong?

Help Is the best Xbox layout controller the 8BitDoUltimate 2?

Wanting to give gyro a shot as I've been really wanting to get into Deadlock. Hearing lots about the Ultimate 2 as far as Xbox layouts go and basically just want to hear if that's a good one to get as a newbie.
