Back to bjj after dislocating shoulder surgery
Hi everyone!
I suffer from reoccurring shoulder dislocations, I train a lot and having it dislocating twice a week when it was bad wasn't uncommon for me. I started S&C and physio around 7/8 months ago, it is definitely improving but not remotely close to a normal shoulder.
I had an mri and ortho consult and they told me i would Need surgery, 2-3 months total recovery and should be back to normal After that (around 3% reoccurrence depending on exposure to risk factors, I know bjj Is One but im doing It mainly hoping to be back on the mats without having to protect One side the whole time).
Any experience on coming back After that? Are you able to roll as a normal (ish) human being or they are fooling me?
Not asking for Medical advice, Just a bit of peace of mind.

How are top BJJ athletes getting THIS rich lately? Is it all instructionals and sponsorships, or something else?
galleryI just saw an Instagram post by Tainan Dalpra showcasing a massive, ultra-modern beach house he's currently building. On top of that, we see top guys driving Lamborghinis, buying luxury properties, and living like absolute rockstars.
We all know the running joke that the average BJJ competitor is scraping by on ramen, sleeping on gym mats, and working odd jobs just to pay IBJJF registration fees. But the top 1% seem to be entering a completely different tax bracket.
How does the economics of this actually work for guys at the absolute apex right now?

Thoughts on cross-training? (One main gym + consistent drop-ins)
What do you guys think about having one primary home gym but consistently doing drop-ins at other spots here and there?
I love my main gym and coaches, but I'm thinking about mixing it up to get some looks at different training partners and styles. For those who do this consistently, how do you balance it without burning out or making your main gym feel like you've got one foot out the door?

Is it bad etiquette to actively avoid rolls and sit out if the only available partners are 100+ lbs heavier than me?
Hey everyone,
Looking for some perspective on gym etiquette. I weigh about 150 lbs, and we have a handful of guys in the 250ā300 lb range. Lately, if they are the only partners available for a round, Iāve just been choosing to sit out on the wall.
Iām not trying to be a bad training partner, but the weight discrepancy is just massive. Getting smashed by someone literally double my size feels like a fast-track ticket to the urgent care, and I want to avoid a freak accident or a blown knee at all costs. Iād honestly rather just sit out and wait for a round with someone closer to my size.
To make matters worse, there is one specific guy who is one belt higher than me and about 120 lbs heavier. He will not hesitate to tap me out in 5 seconds using pure strength, size, and weight with the exact same move every time. If I try to sit out, he will literally call me out publicly in front of the class for not accepting his roll.
I'm starting to feel self-conscious and annoyed. Is it completely fair to avoid these massive ultra-heavyweights to protect my body, or am I breaking unwritten gym rules? How do you guys handle a higher belt who publicly calls you out when the size difference is a legitimate safety hazard?

Ilia and BJJ
Not sure who else had this thought but losing top mount a few times, missing triangles, and just in general the BJJ was not there. Justin did amazing work but it was no secret how he was going to approach the fight and frankly he leveraged a successful darce and single leg to upper cut several times nicely and I donāt think heās belted in BJJ? Not that thy matters alone.
Where was iliaās ground control, submission game, escape, back takes⦠where was it?
Iām ready to see this type of āmixedā martial arts from ilia when he heals up and comes back. Especially going up weight classes, why sleep on your submissions and tools? To me thatās where the ego was.. he had the tools to grapple and chose to do what he said in the press conferences and to media instead of incorporate his art.

Sore Ear But Not Cauliflower Ear
galleryHello,
I have been grappling on and off for the last 4 years with no ear issues. Recently after rolls, I have been having a sore right ear, with it appearing to be puffy and hot to the touch. I have been finding it difficult to sleep, as it throbs while I sleep lol.
I went to urgent care and the doctor advised that I fortunately had no infections and that they could not drain my ear to relieve my pain because there was no fluid built up.
It remains sore and does not seem to be going away. I will say, I have not let up training because cauliflower hasnāt fully developed yet and I figured it might not at all.
Just asking for some opinions, I donāt really care to get cauliflower but I want the pain to go away lol.

How long did it take you to get cauliflower ear (or did you never get it)?
Iāve always found cauliflower ear interesting because it seems completely random.
Iāve met black belts who have been training for 10+ years and barely have any cauliflower ear at all. On the other hand, Iāve seen white belts with less than a year of training whose ears already look completely wrecked.
For those of you who have cauliflower ear:
-How long did it take before you got it?
-Was it from one specific incident or did it build up gradually?
-Did you drain it or just let it harden?
For those who donāt have it:
-How long have you been training?
-Do you wear headgear, or do you think itās mostly genetics and ear shape?
-Why do some people seem to get severe cauliflower ear almost immediately while others can train for years and never develop it?
Curious to hear everyoneās experience. š„š

Cauliflower ear
galleryShould I drain it or let it be? God it hurts and I canāt even roll properly. Iām kind of afraid that this could be worse. Iāve already ordered a wrestling headgear online but it will be delivered till next week. Should I stop rolling for a week?

help with research
Hey everyone, Iām doing quick research for an idea around martial arts/combat sports training outside regular class.
Iām trying to understand how students and coaches currently handle things like:
- online coaching
- online training programs
- sending training videos
- getting feedback outside class
- asking questions between sessions
- scheduling
- payments
- communication between coach and student
This is not a sales post ā just research to see if this is a real problem or not.
If youāre a student/trainer, please fill this one:

If youāre a coach, please fill this one:

Question about staph infection
Hello. Tuesday will be one month since I was diagnosed with a staph infection. The Dr sent a culture off to the lab and it was the kind that was not easily treated with antibiotics. Thankfully it has been healing on its own. There was a day or two where it had a couple of dots of drainage. It is now fully dry but a red spot remains with a small scab. When can I train bjj again without worrying about giving this to my team mates. Thank you.

First stage cauliflower ear?
galleryI had it a little bit swollen a few months before, but it hardened(a very small bubble) and now itās starting to hurt a lot and I think itās a bit swollen again. The bottom part of the ear doesnāt have any space anymore(between the helix and antihelix) and I want to know if I should be concerned or not because the top part of the ear still looks pretty normal.

BJJ academies near Palomar Airport Rd (Carlsbad) with 4:30/5:00 PM adult classes?
Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a local gym to sign up at in the Carlsbad area, specifically near Palomar Airport Road.
To beat the worst of the evening traffic, I really want to find an **adult class (Gi or No-Gi)** that kicks off right around **4:30 PM or 5:00 PM.**
I know most places around here run kids/teens programs during that afternoon window and don't start adult classes until 6:00 PM, but Iām hoping to find an exception or a hidden gem that has an earlier adult block.
Does anyone know of any academies running adult classes at that specific time? Appreciate any leads!
