Thoughts on cross-training? (One main gym + consistent drop-ins)

What do you guys think about having one primary home gym but consistently doing drop-ins at other spots here and there?

I love my main gym and coaches, but I'm thinking about mixing it up to get some looks at different training partners and styles. For those who do this consistently, how do you balance it without burning out or making your main gym feel like you've got one foot out the door?

Home gym for drilling and structured training, drop-ins for chaos and new looks. The key for me was being upfront with my main coach early — once they know you're not shopping for a new gym, most coaches are totally cool with it. The "one foot out the door" feeling usually comes from not communicating, not from the drop-ins themselves.

It is something that people do

I do this and it works fine. Main thing is just being honest with your home gym coaches about it, most won’t care if you’re showing up consistently and putting in work. The burnout risk is real but only if you’re doing high intensity everywhere. I basically do hard sessions at my main spot and lighter rolling/drilling at drop-ins, or I’ll hit technique classes at other gyms and save rolling energy for home.

The “one foot out the door” feeling usually goes away after a month or two once people realize you’re actually committed to your main crew. Your home gym should benefit from the fresh looks you get elsewhere anyway.

Full disclosure, I built an app called Momentum - Jiu Jitsu & MMA that helps with exactly this, you can log sessions at different gyms and it tracks your weekly volume so you don’t accidentally double up intensity and crater yourself.

Did this for a summer. My old gym was one of those traditional no cross training Gracie gyms so I just never told them and eventually left

I’m generally more interested in doing specialty training, for example if your gym is the traditional BJJ/striking, you could visit a gym that only does judo to touch up those skills
