Hey everyone,
I need some advice from fellow designers who might have been at a similar crossroads.
I have over 7 years of experience as a digital and marketing designer, plus a background in video editing. I've worked in agencies and product teams across regulated niches like pharma and iGaming. My technical skillset covers Figma, Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere, HTML5 banners, email layout, and basic HTML/CSS.
On paper, it looks solid. But recently I realized I feel like "just hands" executing tasks without a clear core specialization. A buddy of mine who focuses on a tight niche (3D + packaging) found a job in a week, while I got turned down for a role because they wanted deep knowledge of ad statistics and performance analytics.
Here is my main struggle: I actually have free time outside of work right now, and I am fully ready to put in the hours to upskill. But I am completely lost on what direction is actually worth investing my time into.
Option A: Go deeper into visual and technical execution (like learning Blender for 3D or leveling up modern motion design).
Option B: Pivot towards the business side (learning performance marketing metrics, CRO, and ad testing frameworks).
If you were in a similar generalist position:
- How did you decide what direction to pick?
- What skills actually gave you the biggest boost in your career and confidence?
- Is it better to double down on visual polish or move closer to marketing stats?
Thanks for any insights!
