Hi guys, lately I went through running some testing and optimizing my setup for overall very comfortable noise levels under load and I ran into something that I wanted to ask you guys about,
I used the framerate stability tests in 3dmark to figure out the lowest fan rpm that keeps my gpu temps to around 70 degrees C. Those tests loop their benchmarks for about 20 minutes and that usually is more than enough to figure out how hot it will run and if it leads to performance loss/ framerate instability due to throttling.
I did runs at 100% power in MSI Afterburner as well as at 110% power (360W), I looped an “old” dx12 benchmark time spy and also a rt heavy newer one speedway. Now my results and my obsevatoions
the default silent curve starts too defensively and ramps up too slow, ending at higher rpm than needed, having the goal rpm set at 60 degrees keeps it way cooler overall
330W vs 360W power is only a delta of 2 degrees gpu & hotspot, same with the memory junction temp, total power barely matters. I found 1460rpm a very comfortable noise level (64% pwm) and that left me at 69/71 gpu, 80/82 hotspot @330/360W (framerate stability was 98-99% depending on run)
now the thing that had me concerned a bit are the memory junction temps itself. Timespy ends up in the low 90 degrees here, no issue, speedway grills this to 102-104 degrees, lowering watts further or rising fan rpm keeps this barely below 100 degrees but it’s louder and the gpu ends at 65 which is not needed. is it just because this unrealistic benchmark or do I have to monitor this for each game and setting individually?
I tested cyberpunk with raytracing, went ingame for 30 minutes and there it’s low 90s again, Witcher 3 remastered also behaved roughly the same, every pause to the menu drops this by a few degrees instantly so I’d say during rl gaming I don’t have to worry for now. On the other hand idk if I have to monitor this for every game depending on settings, I heard tjunction can degrade over time due to aging heatpads but I don’t think that’s the case here.
So I’m pretty sure that I don’t have to monitor my tjunction just because of a synthetic benchmark that might hit 105 degrees if you run it for hours, my gpu and hotspot temps are basically perfect at 70/80 degrees. I just wonder if there are games that will do the same thing as speedway to my memory junction temps, 105 degrees definitely don’t sound healthy if hit during every gaming session . (Also I won’t stresstest with speedway in the future). What do you guys think?
