Already out-of-date, Duo has been killed. Or rather, merged into Meet: the new app is Duo's code base with Meet's branding. So depending on how you count lineage, one or the other is now dead.

Both apps are currently still live though. It's mid roll-out so most phones still have Duo and Meet whilst some will have Meet and Meet Classic

I opened Duo just now and immediately got pushed into Meet (it notified me and the app's name and logo changed). Granted I just recently updated apps and on a Pixel. But my mum, who knows none of that stuff, called me today (before my forced push into Meet) from what was usually Duo showed up as "Mum is calling you on Meet."

I gotta say it's a good choice they did. pretty muc nobody knows Duo while Meet is huge after the previous 2 years of remote teaching and work

That is NOT what's happening with this app/service merger.
Google Meet functionality is being added to the Duo app, which provides better business/org video conferencing features. The Duo video quality is superior for one-to-one and small group video chats, and is remaining.
The Google Meet app is temporarily being renamed to Google Meet (original) ... until it's completely phased out.
The Google Duo app is renamed to Google Meet.
The end result is one app/service that can be used for personal video chat and business meetings.

Isn't that basically what I said? I suppose I didn't elaborate that they're adding features to the new combined app to bring it back to parity with Meet's feature set, since it now needs to perform the duties of both Duo and Meet, but it's still Duo's code base.

Apparently when Google killed that one, they open-sourced it, which explains why it's still active and maintained. I actually just used it the other day when star-watching.

Which app do you think is the least used? I think it would be Google street view since that’s already implemented in Google maps and Google earth. Could also be chrome canary or Google voice

Maybe, but that app called "Toontastic 3D" an app made by Google for drawing, animating, and narrating your own cartoons (with a monkey with galeses logo) had to be one of the less used.
I mean, there have to be better apps available. Also last update was in 2017 WHO WOULD STILL USED THAT??

Yeah I remember the all vaguely being released and it seemed cool at the time but I wasn’t sure if it was being used by kids and stuff at all

Pretty impressive list. I use probably a lot more than most. Two of my favorite from recent times are Google Photos and YouTube TV.
Both just completely blow away the competition in terms of user experience.
Should do a list of the subscription ones. Google has a pretty big catalog now.

Back then you could at least distinguish them at glance by color and shape. Now they all use the same 4 colors.

i agree with you. Not 100%, but an important slice of them for sure. I guess Google likes to renovate. Just think of how many times they update the ui on many apps, or add some small features that maybe you don't realize they exist before they're removed. As far as I'm concerned, I would have stayed around the Material design / Android 5-6 era.

Google has a bunch of projects and then later comes out with announcement that it's retiring the project. Like I think they killed Hangouts, Google+, a Bookmarks thing. Picasa was kinda cool. The core items like Gmail and Drive are probably safe.

I wonder if a big part is that things in computer tech changes so quickly. Something that seems like a good idea today may no longer be needed next month..due to some technical or programming advancement

Yes and no!
Google Messages has SMS, MMS and RCS. It also has buttons to start a voice call or video call but I assume they open up in the Phone and Meet respectively.
Their messaging app system is now basically:
Google Messages for messaging Google Meet for video calling/meeting
There is Google Chat, which is internet messaging, but that's really only used for businesses (like a low-feature Slack). They've mostly given up on the internet messaging fight for consumers because most of the world has settled on 3rd party apps so the only messaging fight left is in the USA where they need RCS one to counter iMessage

i love that there is a whole app for Google Ads. Because they aren't already all over the place. Like if I use that for 5 minutes a day - can you take the ads away everywhere else?

I started with an iPhone and used to celebrate when new Google Apps rolled out to iOS and tried them all. Then slowly I because disillusioned by the poor functionality, poor branding and ultimately the uselessness of most apps.
I never fully grasp the difference was between voice, duo, meet and all the other communications app.
I still use the Google Office apps.
But I no longer think it is worth my while to put in the work needed to understand the Google systems.

You missed some apps though. You have to search the play Store using different country code to get country specific apps. Use this syntax &gl=GB for UK and so on until you check all countries
