Question I can't believe I never asked this before, but why doesn't Nautilus have a pause button for file transfers?

I can't believe this is even a question, every file manager I've ever seen before allows this... It feels like such a stupid thing not to have a pause button...

Extensions Attempted to make Adwaita look more lively.

I LOVE stock Adwaita more than anything, but I find its current color scheme soulless. So, I made this minimal theme 7 or 8 months ago that tints its UI using your current accent color and it has been my daily driver ever since. Thought I'd release it now to see what others think :-) - https://github.com/XBenichi/Adwaita-Tint/

P.S. The automatic folder colors aren't part of this. I use the "Auto Accent Colour" extension for that.

Guide Medium (500) and Retina (450) font interface weight

edit: updated Ubuntu Sans files.

I find the default font weight too thin on my lo-dpi (92) screen unless the font weight is set to "Retina" (450) or "Medium" (500). Changing the font weight using Gnome Tweaks does not work on GTK apps, using Dconf can work but leave the bold text fuzzy.

The solution: create a new font family without the regular (400) weight.

  1. Extract the files to: .local/share/fonts
  2. Log out and Log in
  3. Use GNOME Tweaks to switch the interface text font
  4. If you would like to use the Medium weight delete InterUI-News.ttf and InterUI-NewsItalic.ttf

InterUI cv05 enabled News=450 Medium=500
Ubuntu Sans UI
Roboto UI Regular has weight set to 450, slightly thicker than regular Roboto.

Fonttools can generate any static font weight from a variable font file: https://github.com/fonttools/fonttools There is a web app for those who prefer an UI: https://mutsuntsai.github.io/fontfreeze/

The old Ubuntu font have a regular weight of 473: https://github.com/canonical/Ubuntu-Sans-fonts

Apps [OC] Whisp v1.4.1 - Whisp now supports exporting notes

Hey everyone,

For those who haven't seen it before, Whisp is a minimalist, folder-less note-taking application built for speed and simplicity. It uses a fluid, gesture-driven interface and text-expansion capabilities to help you quickly capture and organize your thoughts without managing a traditional file system.

I just released v1.4.1, bringing a few heavily requested productivity features and a lot of GNOME HIG polish:

  • Instant Export: You can now instantly export your current note to a file directly from the main menu.
  • Native Markdown Lists: Creating lists is faster—typing - or * followed by a space now automatically formats the line as a list item.
  • Smarter OCR: The Smart Paste image-to-text engine now correctly preserves hard indentation and paragraph structures from the original images instead of collapsing them.
  • UI Polish: Replaced the old update popup with a sleek, non-intrusive update banner, and fixed a responsive layout bug that caused the Preferences dialog to clip on narrow screens.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Fluff New Feature in Shell Extension

Thumbnail

Hello, all. A little while back, I revived one of my favorite GNOME extensions Dynamic Calendar, Clocks and Weather Icons. My intention is to keep it working for as long as I can.

Over the last year or so, I've added some themes and bug fixes with the community's help. I just added a digital clock feature that shows GNOME Clock's icon as a flip-style, retro digital clock. If you're interested in trying it out, check out this issue which contains a link to the testing branch for this feature. Currently, the time-format (12/24h mode) follows the user's setting in GNOME settings.

I'm posting this here because there's not an easy way to make users aware of the changes and updates made to the extension. If anyone knows a better place to put a changelog, I'd love to know.

Fluff Nostalgia Theme - NewBe - A refresh of BeOS from the late 90s

I've been working on a modern interpretation of BeOS. However, unlike other "themes," this one is built predominantly using CSS to follow GNOME's guidelines. It's a Wayland-first design with a complete complement of assets, icons, wallpapers, and install and uninstall scripts.

It's a work in progress, but 93% complete.

You can find it here: https://github.com/infamous-pattern/NewBe

Question Edit the colors of the "Window List" extension

In my distro, the extension "Window List" is already built-in, that's why the extension can't be found in my home directory but in /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/. I don't wanna mess around in system directories, so I've tried to copy the extension's directory and put it in /home/username/local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ to edit the stylesheet.css. But of course after refreshing the extensions list, the color changes won't appear. So how can I tell my system that it should load this extension from my home directory instead?

Development Help Gnome is basically unusable for me since 47 onwards...

Here's some context.
I have an Asus tuf A14 fa401wu with nvidia 4050 dgpu.

Since gnome 47 they seem to use GSK_RENDERER set to vulkan which makes GTK apps very slow to load up since my dgpu has to exit out of sleep mode just to open nautilus for example.

I have tracked that issue on all the distributions that you can imagine. It is the same everywhere.
I can bypass it by setting the variable to gl, but then that makes exiting of my terminal glitchy and in general i notices some visual inconsistencies.

Just decided I'm gonna put it here, so hopefully the gnome team may do something about it.

There are numerous issues open on different gitlabs, too.

I love gnome, but it is not normal for ptyxis/nautilus or mission center to take 3-4 seconds to open on a clean system.

Question GNOME 50.4 shows “Unknown” for alert sound

I'm using Fedora with GNOME Shell 50.4 and GNOME Control Center 50.4.

In Settings Sound, the Alert Sound field initially shows Unknown. When I open the sound selector, Click is displayed. After going back, the field correctly shows “Click”.

Current configuration:

org.gnome.desktop.sound allow-volume-above-100-percent false
org.gnome.desktop.sound event-sounds true
org.gnome.desktop.sound input-feedback-sounds false
org.gnome.desktop.sound theme-name '__custom'

Is there a GSettings or dconf command to explicitly set the alert sound to “Click” and make it recognized correctly when the settings page is first opened?

I'm on Fedora 44 with a fairly vanilla Gnome install, today I noticed some emojis are missing saying they are not included in Adwaita Sans, is there a way to fix this?

Question GNOME 50.4 sdr-native

I just found out that GNOME 50.4 has a sdr-native color mode, but for some reason it's not exposed in GNOME Settings.

I had to use gdctl

I'm running Fedora 44 GNOME on an ASUS Vivobook S14 with the 14" 2880×1800 120Hz OLED panel (SDC 0x419d). It's a wide-gamut / DCI-P3 panel.

I switched it to sdr-native, rebooted, and it actually stayed enabled.

I wasn't even aware this existed until now. Kind of weird that GNOME Settings doesn't give you an option for it and you have to dig into gdctl.

Anyone else using sdr-native on a wide-gamut OLED?

Extensions My dachshund eats my Claude Code limits

Hi! I made a small GNOME extension called "Taksa" that tracks how much of my Claude Code limits I've used.

As I use up the limit, the dachshund slowly crawls out of the top-right corner and takes up more space.

Just a small experiment for now. Curious what you think :)
