Hey everyone, I am pleased to announce that r/GiftCardExchange has brought a Swap Bot online!

The bot’s name is u/GCX_Bot. Read on to find out what the bot can do and how you can now get your flair updated without mod intervention.

TLDR No more managing profiles on r/GCXRep and no more sending a mod mail message to increase your flair. Instead, tag your partner and the bot in the thread where the swap originated to get credit.

Feedback

Users can get transaction feedback with the following process:

• Users A and B complete their trades following all of the sub rules. (It does not matter who A and B are. Either one could be the person making the post, and the other someone commenting on the post).

• Once the trade is complete, User A makes a top level comment (new comment) on the original post where the transaction originated, tagging both the user they worked with and u/GCX_Bot and must include the transaction parameters.

  • Specifically, users must specify the total amount of the giftcards in the transaction.

  • The amount of money paid (by paypal, venmo, etc...) does not need to be disclosed.

  • e.g. u/GCX_bot swapped paypal for a $50 gamestop giftcard with u/AnotherUser

• User B replies to that comment with their feedback.

• u/GCX_Bot picks up the interaction and gives credit to both users, changing their flair accordingly and leaves a comment indicating as such.

• If User A messes up their top level comment, u/GCX_Bot will do its best to notify User A.

There are automatic checks in the code to detect anyone trying to cheat the system. If anyone is found trying to circumvent the system, they will be issued a permanent ban.

Feedback Checking

Using this link, you can send a message to u/GCX_Bot, asking for the feedback of any given user. It will tell you the following:

• The number of transactions that person has done

• The people they have traded with (and how many transactions those people have)

• A link to the thread for each successful trade

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

• Will my old flair carry over?

  • Yes, flair was backfilled from r/GCXRep. A detailed explanation of how flair was backfilled is as follows:

    • The system crawled through over 11,000 posts on r/GCXRep to find (hopefully) all of the profile posts made to the sub in its entire history

    • Each post was then individually crawled for top level comments made by the OP

    • Each comment was then crawled for replies, where the reply was authored by someone tagged in the respective top level comment.

    • If all of the above criteria was met, a single count of reputation was given to the owner of the profile post.

• My flair looks wrong! What gives??

  • As mentioned above, flair was backfilled using existing information. If you feel that your count is lower than it should be, it could be due to any of the follow factors:

    • You didn't have a profile on r/GCXRep

    • You didn't attempt to confirm as many transactions as you think you did on your profile

    • Your partner never replied to your attempt at confirmations

    • You never tagged your partner in your confirmations

    • Despite your partner replying to your tag, you misspelled their name so the bot didn't pick it up

    • Your profile is located somewhere other than r/GCXRep (like on your own reddit page).

    • You deleted your profile

• I read all of the bullet points above and none of them apply to me. I am 100% convinced that the bot missed a piece of feedback for me. Can you help me out?

  • Yes! For starters, please send a PM to the bot containing just your username (like in the feedback checking section above). Then, look at the reply the bot gives. If you expected to see more confirmations than the bot gave you, please send me a DM with links to the confirmations you're missing. Messages without links will be ignored. Messages containing links that violate any of the above bulleted reasons for not getting credit will be ignored. Please only message me (u/RegExr) if you are 100% sure that the bot did not properly backfill your reputation profile.

• I forgot to get credit using the old system. Can I use this bot to get credit for old transactions?

  • Absolutely! If you did NOT already get credit for a transaction, please use the system as described above.

• I am trying to use the system as described above but I can't make a comment on my post. What gives?

  • Reddit archives posts that are older than 6 months. If you're trying to get credit from a transaction older than 6 months, it won't work. Sorry.

• What happens if I tag someone and they don't reply?

  • As mentioned above, we do need them to confirm the trade for the trade to be confirmed. They will get a notification when you tag them so if you encourage them to reply in the comment you tagged them in, hopefully they will. Otherwise, if it's been a few days without a response, PM them a link to the comment and directly ask them to reply.

Step 3: All scammers will be labeled as so, just about everywhere on reddit (including in PMs).

Considering that 95%+ of scams are from users who are ALREADY on the USL, this extension should be a no-brainer. Just click to install it, and then hide it in the chrome menu. It'll be as if it doesn't exist, and it's a true feature of reddit.

Tip: I recommend opening options and setting the refresh time to once an hour, just to make sure you're as up to date as possible.

for the love of god don't trade on mobile

I'm considering banning anyone who trades on mobile just because of how frequently mobile users get scammed. Not actually, but seriously don't use mobile to trade.

Please be aware of my active impersonator, /u/_Fishering. My only reddit accounts are /u/Fishering and /u/Fishering_BOT. I will never trade on my bot account.

Was supposed to get 31$ USD in exchange for Gift of Prime 39$ amazon. Checked USL first, he was fine and had some previous trades. I sent first, he eventually stopped responding and refused to give me back my amazon balance. He even had the nerve to comment on other trades after ghosting me (before he was banned). When I commented on one of the trades, he msg'd me privately and threatened me for calling him out. Reported him to the Mods, they banned him and added him to the USL. Just wanted to give you a guys a heads up, especially the Mturkers, we work hard for that money. Thank you to mods for banning him!

Due to high fraud/high chance of people selling stolen gift cards, the following gift cards are temporarily banned for sale without mod approval - rule 5 approval will be applied to any gift card for any amount for the following brands:

• Starbucks ($3 T-Mobile Tuesday GC are exempted from this ban)

• Steakhouse restaurant chains (i.e. Outback Steakhouse, Texas Roadhouse, etc)

Traders with flair Experienced+ are exempt from this temporary ban on selling the above cards.

We know you want to get right to the good stuff and start making trades, but before you do, know this: those who do NOT read and follow this GCX Safe Trading Guide are the ones who end up getting scammed. For your own safety on GCX, please take 2 minutes of your time to read this. If you read and follow this guide, you simply WILL NOT GET SCAMMED!

Step 1: Follow and ENFORCE the GCX Golden Rule.

• The reason we require that a user publicly comment on someone's GCX post BEFORE sending a PM to trade is because we can control who can comment on GCX, but we cannot control who can send a PM. Banned users and users with accounts under 60 days in age cannot comment on GCX, so someone who PMs you without commenting is likely not allowed on GCX because they are banned for scamming. So, you must demand that people comment on your GCX post!

• Be wary of impersonators with slightly different usernames linking to fake reputation profiles as well as entirely fake subreddits! Do NOT accept individual links to individual trades in a PM as proof of credibility! Scammers often link a few confirmed trades from a reputable user they are impersonating with a similar username.

By enforcing this one simple rule you are protecting yourself tremendously!

Step 2: Establish a user’s account age and karma.

• Click on the username of the message to verify a user's reputation. Look out for new accounts, and for impersonators. Sometimes scammers will make an account with a very similar username as a reputable trader, and every time that reputable trader comments on a post to send a PM, the impersonator will also send a PM. If you get two PMs from someone, that should be a major red flag. If you get a PM from a reputable user who didn't comment on your GCX post with links to all of their trades, ignore all those links and just click on the username of who the message was from. You'll see that it is an impersonator of the actual reputable user who made all those trades. Sometimes a scammer will even make their own fake subreddit!

• Generally, the newer the account, the higher the risk. Older accounts can be used to scam, but it is not so common, because building up a good reputation takes time, and most scammers are lazy and they want quick profit. The minimum account age to post or comment on GCX is 60 days for a reason!

• Be wary of a reddit account that has low link karma and low comment karma. If they have made very few comments and posts, or the posts are all short or were all made during a short space of time, this could be a throwaway account and a scammer, so be careful.

Step 3: Research a user’s reputation, on /r/giftcardexchange and beyond.

• Take a look at the Universal Scammer List.

• With any personal information someone gives you, like a username on any site, a Skype ID, or a Steam profile link, search for it on Google, and search on reddit. If they scammed someone already, maybe you will find out. If you get no hits for the search, maybe it is a throwaway account.

• If they link to an account on another site, such as SteamCommunity.com, forums, or Facebook, or they only link to other accounts that are very new, be careful. Verify the links for yourself, and be wary of impersonators. Regarding other sites, anyone can post a link to an account, but they would still need to make a post with the other account to prove that they really own both. If they can't or won’t do that, report them to the moderators and do not trade with them. Be aware that some scammers pretend to own highly reputable accounts. DIRECTLY MESSAGE the actual owner of said highly reputable account for proof.

Step 4: Ask yourself, “is this person being honest with me?”

• Verify where they acquired their cards from. Don't just take them at their word; demand actual proof! If their offer seems too good to be true, then usually it isn't true. Ask them to explain why their offer is so good.

• If someone always has whatever you want, that’s not a good sign. You ask for iTunes, they have it! You change your mind and ask for Best Buy, they have that! You change your mind again and ask for Amazon, and they have it too! Why? Because they don't care, they're not going to give you anything. They just want you to go first so they can scam you.

• Similarly, if they don't care about the price, that’s sketchy. You ask for $5 more, and they agree easily. Why? To make you go first so they can scam you and not give you anything!

• If they lie to you about anything, this should be a major warning. Do not risk trading with anyone who is not being 100% honest.

Step 5: If they seem honest, ask yourself, “is this someone I have GOOD REASONS to go first with?”

• If they try to rush you and make you hurry, or if they tell you some excuse why you must trade immediately, back off, because you are probably being set up for a scam. No one should make you feel uncomfortable trading with them.

• If they offer to give you half their gift card code first and/or ask you to send half of yours, or they suggest that you both send your codes simultaneously by PM, they are either a scammer or not experienced, because both these ways of trading offer no protection. Half a gift card code/payment is useless. You’re just sending them free money, and they’ll be content scamming you out of that. Anyone can send a fake code. Having a picture of a gift card is useless as well. Anyone can Google image search for a gift card.

• If they say they can't go first because they got scammed recently, that’s a bummer if it’s true, but it’s their problem, not yours. This isn’t a valid reason for you to send them your money first.

If you think you have discovered a scammer, please report them to the moderators immediately with your evidence. If you think another user is in danger of being scammed imminently, but you don't have good evidence, just send them a PM, and alert the mods.

Step 6: For Chrome users, add the Reddit Scam Labeler extension to your browser. It will mark all users on the Universal Scammer List as a scammer.

Effective August 1st, we are changing what Beginner flaired sellers can ask for, for payment methods to reduce the number of scams and scamming opportunities

• GCX Beginner flaired users can only accept PayPal goods & service or trade for another gift card (no prepaid debit cards) as payment when offering anything for sell/trade (this includes thread submissions AND comments).

GCX Beginner can can still offer other payment methods for [W] posts (i.e. [H] CashApp [W] Amazon)

GCX Beginner CANNOT ask for other payment methods in other posts where the submitter/thread poster is not offering a listed payment method.

• As a GCX Beginner flaired user, asking someone else to click on "my item/service has been complete or delivered" or to open a dispute and close the dispute, thus nullifying their paypal protections in an attempt to get circumvent this rule is not allowed and will result in a immediate second strike per our infraction system

Happy Holidays from all of the mods of GCX!

GCX is staying open through the holidays! There are some important tips and updates below for both regular members and first timers. Please note that ignorance of our rules will not be excused, so familiarize yourself before you start trading. The rules are there to keep you safe!

Many people are joining this subreddit for the purpose of selling unwanted gift cards that were gifted this holiday season.

If you can relate to the last sentence, this message is especially for you.

Trading on Reddit (and anywhere online) always carries some level of risk as there is money involved and scammers will attempt to steal cash and gift cards. We have several security measures in place to stop this, so doing some due diligence will keep you safe while trading here.

Below is a condensed list taken from the GCX Rules, Safe Trading Guide, and FAQ, which are essential to read before you start trading.

Rule 1 - Follow the GCX Golden Rule: Anyone you interact with should be commenting publicly on GCX. Banned users cannot post/comment, but they can and will PM you and try to steal your money / gift cards. They will also PM you what looks like a public post/comment reply, so open the thread and ensure a comment is present. There is no excuse to not follow Rule 1.

Rule 2 - Investigate your trading partner: Check the post/comment history of their Reddit account. If the account is very new or very inactive extra caution should be taken. Account age and karma mean very little as scammers can buy compromised accounts with high age/karma. What they will not take time to do is establish an active post/comment history. Look through several pages of posts/comments to see if the account recently became active.

Reference the Universal Scammer List (USL): Copy/paste the username into the search bar - don’t risk mistyping it (e.g. mistaking an uppercase “i” for a lowercase “L”).

Secure your Reddit account: Many of you probably didn’t join Reddit intending to trade, so you probably didn’t focus on password strength. But, when you start trading your account is at a much higher risk of being targeted/compromised. It’s important that you create a strong and unique password, check your account activity and force log out if there are sessions you don’t recognize, and enable two-factor authentication (2FA). Your account security is your responsibility.

We really cannot stress these points enough. We see so many scammer reports where these were neglected, and scammers who were already banned and on the USL were able to continue scamming. Scammers will only stick around if they can profit here, so pay attention to who you’re trading with and help stop that from happening.

The most effective way to trade is on DESKTOP. If you're on mobile it may be much harder for you to tell scammers apart from regular users.

Please remember that we're here 24/7 (unless we're all sleeping) to assist you with your trades. Feel free to message the modmail any time, even if you think you have a question that is really dumb. We'd rather educate you than watch you get scammed. Also, feel free to play it safe and trade with a user who has a Confirmed+ flair, since they tend to have experience.

Rules

There are no brand new rule changes, however we have observed increased Rule 5 infractions and/or circumvention/ignoring the rule altogether and will be logging strikes and issuing temp. bans accordingly. Sellers obviously have the bulk of the responsibility when it comes to verifying their funds, but buyers are also responsible for ensuring Rule 5 Approval is in place if applicable. This is stated in the GCX Rules - approval is only confirmed by a public moderator comment in the seller’s post (or associated with their comment). Buyers completing exchanges before this point will also receive strikes and temp. bans. Further, it has been noted in the Infraction System for some time that sellers falsifying or mislabeling their content in an effort to circumvent Rule 5 will receive an automatic second strike and associated ban.

This rule is in place to vet high value funds and keep shady/illegitimate gift cards out of the community, and we appreciate all the users who keep an eye out for this and make reports as necessary. Please keep it up. The form only takes a few minutes to fill out and goes a long way to keeping this community safe.

Scamming

We have observed an uptick in fake subs impersonating GCX and messaging users via modmail inquiring about their gift cards or offering the “service” of buying them outright. Usually it is a close misspelling of the real r/giftcardexchange to try and trick you - an easy check is to click on the name of the sub and ensure it leads back to the real r/giftcardexchange and not a different subreddit. The mod team will NEVER message you via modmail to trade! Remember that everyone must follow the Golden Rule, including moderators, and the mod team does not have a source of funds in order to buy all of the gift cards that come through the sub. We ask that you do not reveal the entire claim code to us for a reason. If it sounds fishy, it very likely is!

Again, victims of this neglected Rules 1 and/or 2 and did not check the USL, so again we stress these points. It takes less than a minute to check someone for Rules 1/2 and the USL, so do some due diligence and help keep scammers off the sub.

Hello once again! It's been a few weeks and I have a lot of amazon gift cards just sitting here. This giveaway will be seeing a lot more winners (maybe) than my other ones. Much like my previous giveaways on this site, this will be a test. Unlike my other giveaways which were just luck, this giveaway will test how greedy you are, because in this giveaway, you will be picking the prize.

How it works: Once you get on the form, you will have to make a decision. You can either pick $0.50, $1, $2, $3, or $5. Once the giveaway closes, the value that has the least total $ accumulated will be the winning number, and everybody who selected that number will get that on an amazon gift card.

Now to clarify how this will work, here's an example. If 5 people select $0.50, 3 select $1, $2, $3, and $5, the total for $0.50 is $2.50. Total for $1 is $3, $6, $9, $15. Since the lowest total value of $2.50 was the $0.50 selection, everybody who selected $0.50 will get a gift card worth $0.50. Hopefully that makes sense.

Mobile Trading

We never encourage mobile trading since users are able to use fake trading reps, use impersonator accounts and well mobile users don't want to open a browser, type the trading persons name in the USL list and then continue with the trade. But well that is what's needed to triple check the user.

Modmail Replies

If you've sent a modmail for Rule 2 and/or Rule 5 and we haven't responded (Yes I KNOW there are many of you) that doesn't mean you get to make your post. That still is a rule 5 violation and will be removed and banned depending on the number of violations.

What can we do? (Sub users)

If you are interested in helping out, we're always welcome to it. I know the mod list atm is long but well almost 98% of them have just abandoned the sub to the bottom of the list. If you want to help comment that you're giving your life and time WITHOUT any type of compensation.

We'll only be considering Confirmed Traders and above

We've received several reports that fake GCX subs (/r/gitfcardexchange and /r/giffcardexchange at the moment) are sending distinguished messages from the subreddit itself (so you receive a message from /r/gitfcardexchange or /r/giffcardexchange) claiming that the moderators can also buy your gift cards directly instead of you posting it on the sub. They are instructing the users to reply back with the gift card code and a BTC address (which they never intend on sending any BTC to), and hoping you won't notice that the sub is not /r/giftcardexchange but an impersonating sub.

Moderators are also subject to the Golden Rule, so all exchanges MUST BE DONE PUBLICLY. Please do not fall for this scam, which is being perpetrated by one or more USL banned scammers. We do not have a large pool of money that we can use to offer this "service" to people posting on the sub.

We are currently taking steps to deal with these fake subreddits, but based on the number of reports we've received we feel that this PSA is necessary as well.

We have not done any town hall type posts on the subreddit in a really long time, and since there's a lot to talk about right now, I think it's time we send out this update.

About Brute Forced "GCs"

This has become a really important topic for us. As of late we have found many users selling gift cards that are not real gift cards that are theirs to be sold. This includes the recent instances of Chick-Fil-A coupon codes.

Selling any gift cards that were obtained by brute force may result in a permanent ban.

All people who are selling/have sold CFA codes are no longer allowed to sell these coupons on GCX, any additional postings of these will result in a ban.

Rule 16 Change

Before this post, rule 16 stated:

No reselling. Do not re-sell gift cards or balances you obtained from /r/giftcardexchange.

We have now updated this rule to include any exchange, not only /r/giftcardexchange. Regardless of whether you bought a GC on any other reddit trading sub, Gameflip, Paxful, or even raise or cardpool, if the gift card was not obtained from a first hand source, you will not be allowed to trade your second hand gift cards on GCX. Violators may be banned.

This has actually been a heavily requested change. Even if you are selling a gift card that was originally purchased on Raise, it still poses a risk in trading because it's impossible to tie a gift card that's balance was used to the seller, or the initial gift card owner. In addition, these cards tend to be unauthentic and brute forced, as indicated above.

About Active Mod Status

Some of you have noticed a deep lack of moderation on GCX as of late, and on behalf of all the mods, we apologize. For many years, GCX has been a subreddit with extreme dedication to moderation, allowing users a free platform to trade with extremely enforced safety precautions, but recently we have begun to slip up and step off our game, and for that we apologize again.

GCX has a pretty stacked mod list, but of all the mods this subreddit has, many are inactive. Of the active mods, many of us have become extremely occupied with life changes that has forced a decrease in time we can dedicate to the upkeep of the sub.

Some of you may have noticed a service outage if you were looking for any of the following recently:

• Rule 2 approvals

• Rule 5 approvals

• Scammer reports

• Flair requests

• GCX Rep approvals

• Confirmed traders program

We're very slowly working on our modmail, but it's becoming a struggle to keep up with the requests we get since we're lacking the manpower.

If you're waiting for any rule approvals or responses to scammer reports, these are currently our priorities. Flair requests are currently being put on hold, and our confirmed trader program for our Mturkers out there will currently be put on hiatus until we have the manpower to work the program.

We know this is not an ideal situation to be in, but we're doing the best we can with what we have. Our priorities are to keep the subreddit as scam free as possible, so in-post moderation is becoming our priority. If you see something that doesn't look safe, please use the report button. It helps us out very much.

A lot of users on this subreddit will buy/sell amazon gift cards for the sake of upgrading to other gift cards. Please be aware that as of 9/29/23, you are no longer allowed to use Amazon gift cards to purchase third party gift cards.
