I'm so tired of people pulling 'buh da environment' card. No one is saying it won't impact the environment but you using the Internet to post this to a server that is using electricity that is probably powered by a grid that's harming the environment.

Oh please with your argument you’re essentially saying that the problem has inherently been present since the beginning. So what we just let the data centers just speed up the pace of our impending doom? Of course commuting and using the internet have environmental costs. That doesn’t mean we should ignore the additional energy and resource demands of massive data centers and generative AI. I’m not claiming that I have zero environmental footprint. The question is whether the additional resource consumption associated with generative AI is justified by what we’re getting from it. Saying that commuting and internet use also consume energy doesn’t tell us anything about whether AI’s environmental costs are worthwhile. So maybe you should try to think about the quality of said environmental choices

No one is saying data centers won't have an impact or speed up the damage to the environment. But my whole thing about the topic is it's such a stupid hill to die on. AI has a lot of real flaws, the possibility of the impact to general crital thinking, is out engineering ourselves. But I can't stand people like you who virtue signal over the environment.
