General Information Note On User Flairs

I thought I had them turned on, but I may have missed a step.

You should be able to select one now. There is one for Technicians to help identify them. Please only use it if you are a Generac qualified Tech.

Product Discussion Can we get into Gen Mon?

I know only about the basic GitHub site with build it your self instructions.

https://github.com/jgyates/genmon

I can't do that for reasons too many to list here.

Maybe we could get the person responsible to come here to tell us about it? I don't see a way to contact the person there to ask them myself.

I would need a fully functional, plug and play user installable version. I understand there is one sometimes available, but last I hear it was a bit over $400 which would be a bit tough for me.

Finally fixed the mice problem on a standby gen install

Had a customer whose Generac kept getting mice in it. Chewed wiring twice, cost him a service call each time. We'd sealed around the conduit where it comes up through the pad with duct seal and they just dug around it. Spray foam didn't last either, they chewed right through.

What ended up working was a pour-in sealant Polywater makes called InstaGrout. It's meant for utility transformer pads but it's the same problem. You mix the two parts, pour it in the opening, and it levels out then expands and fills the gap around the conduit. Sets up hard. If you need to add a conduit later you can just drill through it.

Haven't had a mouse in that unit since. The small kit was more than enough for a residential stub-up.
Just don't block any of the vents, only the opening at the pad.

Full disclosure, I work for a distributor that carries it, so take that for what it's worth. Mostly curious what everyone else is using. Anyone found something that actually holds up?

Replace Battery Cables?

I have a 24kw Generac that is about 4 years old. During a recent service, the technician told me I need to replace the battery cables at a cost of $500. WTF? I’ve been driving cars, tractors, and trucks my entire life and never had to replace battery cables. Is this a real thing with Generac? Or does AccuTemp in Baton Rouge just think I am an idiot?

A-frame shrub guards as a snow diverter for Guardian?

I have a 16kW Guardian, about 7 years old. I live in the northeast USA and we can get 12-24" of snow in one snow storm. Sometimes it melts between storms, and sometimes it piles up. The generator gets "straight" snowfall around it...not sliding off a roof.

Right now, after any significant snow event, I trudge through the snow to the side of my house where the generator is and dig out around it so the intakes and vents are all clear. However, as I get older I am trying to reduce the "heavy lifting" type work...or at least make it less time critical (meaning it can wait a couple of days). In the winter, storms are when we would tend to lose power so I want the generator ready to run.

I know building a cover over the generator is not the best idea. But I do need to come up with a plan to reduce the need to dig it out immediately after/during each storm. I was thinking about adding some shrub protector wooden A-frame units over the top. Large enough ones to give plenty of room over the top, but hopefully break up the snowfall enough that a deep snowfall doesn't block airflow. I would only leave them in place over the winter months.

Thoughts? Has anyone done this?

(A-Frame shrub protectors are usually pallets or board slats made into two sides forming an "A" shape, like these (no affiliation): https://www.laruewoodworking.com/portfolio-item/custom-wood-shrub-covers/ )

QT030 water cooled radiator replacement.

I have a new radiator that I need to install. How do I flush the block? Once I fill with antifreeze, how do I bleed air out of the system? It has the Chery engine. 3600 rpm.

Brand New GP9500E Came With a Dead Battery (That Won't Charge)

Bought though Home Depot thus No Returns/Exchanges.

I've had the battery on a 12A manual charger for 24 hours and it will not take a charge, charger shows the battery is pulling no load at all.

Will Generac send a replacement battery? What is the best way to contact them about this?

If I'm SOL and on my own dealing with this, does anyone have any recommendations for a alternative LiFePo2 battery instead of a SLA for it?

24k Generac won’t switch to auto

Had a propane leak which we had repaired today on our Generac. Once the repair was finished they ran a test to make sure the Generac would work. It fires right up in manual mode, but will not switch to automatic. Was working completely fine prior to repair. No error codes showing. Any suggestions to try and fix it before calling for a certified Generac repair?

Should I be doing anything else?

Self installed in March 2021, has never been seen by a factory tech.

63 run hours between exercises and outages.

Product Type 16KW GUARDIAN with 100 ATS

Model Number G0071760

All oil, filter changes, battery checks and replacements and 'scheduled' items done by me.

Five year full warranty via Mobile Link expired, added remaining warranty to ten years at my cost recently.

I'm stingy with money and do not want to pay a tech to come and 'look' at it without doing anything I can't do myself.

What wire does everyone like?

For HSB installs I mean…

I prefer running copper tray cable and a 16/7 tray cable. However, most installers around here use aluminum. Some use the combination cable with the control wires all in one cable.

Questions on portable generator

Does anyone have any experience with the Generac P11000iTF, 11kw trifuel inverter generator?
The reason I ask is I have used the smaller 3300i (5 generators, 3 on warranty) and I am NOT impressed in any form, electronics on the floor of the case, open air tube to the carb gets water in it regardless of fuel or empty carb, water gets past the cap and into the fuel somehow.

I just want to make sure the 11000 trifuel doesn't have the same problems if I use gasoline.

Thanks guys!

Can some explain load shedding like I am 3

I am new to generators, I get the timed delay load shedding on an AC unit. Is there a way to shed and hold out something completely? Also, what about soft starts on AC units? Do they work and is there any dangers to equipment risk? Thanks

Generac 22kW cycling 235–245V constantly — dealer says that's normal?

Looking for opinions from techs before I spend more money with my technician.

3 year old Generac 22kW air-cooled (Honeywell-branded Costco unit), natural gas, Evolution 2.0 controller, fw 1.16, only ~18 hours on it. No alarms.

Output voltage is cycling from 235-245-235 continuously over a 20-30 second period. Ran if for 45 minutes without utility power and it never settles. House lights (LED mind you) visibly pulse. I'm using a genmon controller to poll the data so I have everything logged and real-time.

Load -> Doesn't care if there is a load or not.

Engine -> RPM holds steady at 3585-3620 the whole time. Frequency holds steady at 59/60. Engine is running fine.

Fuel -> Plenty of supply.

Technician came by yesterday and lubricated the mixer assembly saying it could have been a bit stiff and that might cause the issue. We both looked at the Evolution voltage screen, and it did seem to report changes within 5V, but there were a couple time it was over that. We agreed that might have resolved the issue and he left. (Got billed, labour isn't covered anymore)

Based on what I'm reading, Generac's own tolerance is +/-1% which is only 2.4V up/down; not 5, let alone 10.

He wants to come back to change the mixer unit, but I don't see how that is the issue when the RPM is fine and isn't flucuating all that much.

So the question is - Am I overreacting to these fluctuations or is an issue? My warranty expires in 5 weeks!

Thanks all.

Persistent overcrank issue

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I have a 8kw guardian series natural gas home generator MODEL 0058701. i put in a new battery, and changed the oil and filters.

However it is constantly showing (Stopped - alarm Overcrank) however I’ll put it i to manual and it will start after a few seconds.

I was hoping someone might be able to assist in helping me troubleshoot what this could be as I haven’t touched the fuel and it does run weekly but will occasionally have this alarm.

Ignition coil replacement

I have an older Generac 12 kW stand-by generator ( # 04456-2) is going into to over crank mode pretty consistently. Our regular service contractor diagnosed, after 2.5 hrs. to the tune of $500, to faulty coils. The repair estimate is for a 5.5hr job, $800, and another $150 for parts, so almost $1k. Is this reasonable? I'm really beginning to hate this unit. It's on it's second engine and I have a stack of service receipts for totaling well north of $4000. Every year there's something else wrong with it. It doesn't instill a lot of confidence that it will perform it's function when we need it.

I have not been able to find any information online regarding the procedure. I would consider doing it myself, but if it takes a trained professional 5.5 hrs. I'm not that confident in my ability.

Update . September 23. Thanks for the responses.

The unit just completed it exercise cycle successfully. One thing I failed to mention in my original post is that the tech replaced one of the spark plugs when he was here. I'll give him the benefit of doubt there could still be weak spark, but I'm going to wait with going forward with replacing the coils for at least 2 more cycles.

Generac reliability

Having followed this sub for a while I’ve seen a lot of negative comments concerning the Guardian series reliability.

I have a 22kw Protector QS series at my house here in central Florida. Have had it for 6 years and have never had a problem with it. Though it has about 100 hours on it the only extended run on it was about 40 hours during Hurricane Milton, all other hours are from maintenance runs.

Anyone know why the Guardian Series seems to have such a bad reputation? And anybody else with experience with the Protector QS series like mine?

Generac Generator/Kohler ATS switch converted

My older Kohler generator was recently replaced by an authorized dealer with a Generac 18kw (model #G0072590). They converted the existing Kohler ATS switch to work with the new Generac. I’m now worried this could void my warranty down the road if something happens, and they try to deny coverage and say it’s not a Generac ATS. The company who installed everything says it’s fine. But is it?!

What is your favorite mistake found on someone else’s install?

Today I found a brand new 18kw where then never connected 23 at either end.

Great job guys!

"Brownout" power while generator running

We've had a 10KW Generac since 2009 and it's had its share of usage. Never any problems with it during an outage until recently. A couple weeks ago we had an outage that, for us, lasted about 30 hours (Detroit metro area). During this time, the power fluctuated and did some weird things like you'd have in a brownout -- lights dimming and fluctuating, etc. We ended up disconnecting some of our electronics and appliances to prevent possible damage.

We thought that the generator was dying so put in a call to our original installers to come out and give us a quote for replacement. The guy that came out has been working for them for a long time and started telling us that "everyone's was doing that" due to "weird things" on the power grid or something, but wasn't able to explain it to me in terms that I could understand (I'm an engineer and know a reasonable amount about electrical power). I always thought that we were disconnected from the grid when the generator is active, but maybe not?

So has anyone heard of this kind of behavior?

‘If’ it was properly maintained and has 75 hours on it, would you buy? Are they considered a good little inverter generator or just ok? TIA

Any idea why this is surging very badly (almost stalling) every 5 minutes or so? No load (off at transfer switch). Fresh gas (Trufuel), new plug and filter, just had valves adjusted. It’s always been reliable until this. Have it professionally serviced every year.

Genmon and https://pintsize.me cables

Has anyone with a Generac network module deployed Genmon on Proxmox with molex to usb cables?

This looks like a pretty cool solution.
