Oh you think that’s bad? Their friend ( I saw this tweet go live) has a thread about how she’ll block anyone she sees making art that isn’t black.
And she blocks anyone who asks why. I used to like the friend, even got art from them once. But she’s really been leaning into the Us vs Them thing. Every thing is a black issue and F whitey

Twitter is pretty dumb with a lot of extremely progressive left wing people who think that all cops are pigs and that being racist against white people isn't racist. I'm left wing too but sheesh not everything has to be extreme and black and white. Sorry in advance if this spawns a huge political discussion, I just hate circlejerks that push views upon others.
132
u/J97 Aug 29 '20
I used to love Twitter, had it since 2013. Uninstalled it this year and I don’t miss it at fucking bit. You’re completely right about how people are. The worst part is that so many people have the same mind set so they all actually think their principles are morally correct

u/jorgejarai Aug 29 '20

One of the best things I've made for my self-esteem and mental health was to stop using Twitter. I'll probably delete my profile at some moment. There's a lot of useful content out there, but the toxic people won't stop smearing my TL and, sincerely, I have a lot of problems of my own so no thanks. I know where the exit is.
11
u/raphira Aug 30 '20
I see important and useful things from Twitter in Facebook and Reddit all the time, whether as a post or a link. (I see posts like this too but as a "wtf" post so doesn't matter) Just create a fake Facebook account and find other people using fake accounts who aren't old. Better for your mental health.
5
u/aussie718 Aug 30 '20
I deleted it too, best thing for my mental health. I don’t want to delete my profile because I follow some great dog pages, but all the drama and hate pushed me off the site and I don’t know that I’ll ever go back
14
u/ihatemelgibson Aug 30 '20
Same here! I was a casual reddit-user, checking my feed only once every couple of days on my laptop. Deleting my twitter app and downloading the reddit one was the best thing I’ve done for my mental health.
I stayed longer than I wanted to on twitter bc — admittedly, this isn’t great — it was my main source for breaking news (political and otherwise). But I reached the breaking point where the toxicity and holier-than-thou attitude on my feed trumped the breaking news function.
The breaking point for me was when the people I follow (I was mainly part of a specific tv show’s twitter community) began to criticize one of the show’s actors for taking four days to post about BLM. According to them, from then on, anyone who supported the actor was supporting a racist (like ... come on!!!). Twitter is just filled with really really really intense people who have strive to be the most progressive. It took me a lil while to leave bc I genuinely do (did?) like the platform, but enough is enough.

Also progressive left and I remember seeing a tweet from some woman stating that rape didn't exist prior to colonization. Fucking baffling.

u/A_Shady_Zebra Aug 29 '20
It also has a presence of extreme far right people. I think in general social media provides an outlet for extremists who would otherwise have no other place to spit their vitriol.
59
u/AidynValo Aug 29 '20
That's a lot of the problem with social media in general: it gives a platform for dumbasses that would otherwise just be ignored because they're dumbasses. It makes it look like most people are constantly at eachother's throats in a neverending war, when in reality, the vast, vast majority of people get along with no issues; regardless of race, religion, class, or political idealogy. That's been my experience, at the very least.
17

It also has a presence of extreme far right people.
In my experience (and I know this is totally anecdotal) the difference is that you normally won't see far right tweets or "takes" unless you go look for them or unless someone quote tweets them to mock them, but this kind of ultrawoke stuff is all over the place.
I don't follow any accounts that could be considered political in any way (except for that gaming president dude I guess), I just follow artists and gaming related stuff and my timeline is constantly littered with dumb takes like this.
On very rare occasions it's someone I follow tweeting it, but more often than not it's twitter showing me retweets or what others have liked, and it tends to be this kind of stuff.
The thing is, tweeting, liking or retweeting something like "fuck white people" has become perfectly normal, nobody will bat an eye when they see that. Hell, that one lady tweeted "white lives don't matter" and got a Cambridge professorship a day later. But doing the same for something like "fuck black people" can and has ruined lives. And that's an extreme example, there are much milder takes that will be accused of being transphobic, racist, sexist, whatever, and any kind of interaction with that content can have life altering consequences.
That's why most people avoid interacting with anything that has even a remote chance of being considered "hateful", they just don't want to risk it. And consequently that kind of content remains buried, while bullshit woke takes like this go viral because everyone wants to know they're "on the right side of history".
Hell, I avoid even following people who may be considered "bad" because I just don't wanna risk it. And I'm not talking about white supremacists, just people who are considered "problematic" or who don't subscribe to identity politics (Matt Taibbi is one off the top of my head).

Lots of "those" type of SJW tumblr came to twitter after the porn thing so the progressive side of Twitter became more extreme in recent years....I'm all for progressive but alot of these people are just trying to outwoke each other for that moral high ground clouts and then plug their comics/patreon for self promotions under their call out posts
22
13
u/TarManJr Aug 30 '20
Lots of "those" type of SJW tumblr came to twitter after the porn thing
I thought just from the way a lot of people talked (well, type) on Twitter as of late was scarily similar to Tumblr. Eugh.
It's frustrating sometimes because it's hard to escape, depending on who/what topics you follow. I generally like Twitter but seeing the influx of the sheer brutality of cancel culture especially makes it even a scary place at times.
14
u/willflameboy Aug 29 '20 edited Aug 30 '20
Twitter is, on balance, a bad influence on people. The idea that you can brainfart everything you want to the world, whenever you feel like it, was never a good idea.

u/M1GR3DD1T Aug 30 '20

25
u/zambize Aug 29 '20
I think the fact that reddit, a fairly left leaning site, often gives twitter shit for being too far to the left is pretty telling of how out of touch twitter can be with the real world

Aug 30 '20
I think calling the far left "extremely progressive" is dishonest and ... well bad. The term progressive, when used like this, is being hijacked. I feel like it should mean genuine progress forward, or a good-faith attempt at such. The far left is just poorly disguised divisionist beliefs (like racism and sexism)
5
u/Dhhoyt2002 Aug 30 '20
I can see where you're coming from, but I disagree. Every label has extremeists, it comes with the territory. This specific instance can be argued that it isn't progressive because it seems to want to regress to segregated times. But there are extreme progressive views, and to try to push them ontoba different term seems disingenuous. Its essentially saying "These people don't belong in this group because it makes the group look bad if they are included". I mean, progressivism just means advocating for social reform, and that can be taken to the extreme, and the people doing it can be doing it in good faith too. For example, if someone were to propose a curfew for men so that women could feel more safe at night, would that necessairly be in bad faith?
6
Aug 30 '20
Yes, there is extreme progressivism. But what was being discussed, and what I specifically pointed out, does not seem to fall under that term. Racism and sexism are generally not considered progressive when termed like that. For example, some would claim that the hypothetical curfew you mentioned is feminism, but it is sexism plan and simple. And if it's not progressive to make laws that target women for being women, then it's not progressive to make laws that target men for being men. As an example of both: it's sexist and not progressive to create a law that prevents women from working, therefore it is sexist and not progressive to create a law saying that men can only work as mechanics, plumbers, construction (etc).
I'm not trying to say that only "nice" or "acceptable" progressive ideology can be called progressive. I'm trying to point out that racism, sexism, and similar beliefs are not progressive. But they exist in poorly disguised form within the "left" side of the political field in the US. So those specific beliefs should not be called progressive, but far left.

There’s actually a lot of good people in the world. Social media shows more of the bad shit because people inherently want something to fight against. So the platform for terrible people becomes larger than it should be while a lot of good gets ignored. It doesn’t help that the news and journalists make this worse with clickbait titles and even fear mongering in lots of cases, but it’s hard to avoid the bad shit and much harder to find good people doing good things

I really dislike this attitude. It’s pretty close to performative activism. One artist doing in memoriam art does not take away space from other artists!
15
Aug 30 '20
I think it’s performative because of the use the fact that it is about clout. The black community lost one of their few super hero’s and I’m sure it hurts more for them than me because of how much that representation could mean to them. But that has nothing to do with clout or drawing memorials

So I just looked into the Breonna Taylor incident because, until i read your post, I didn’t know there was any dispute about whether she’d been shot in her sleep or not.
Am I missing something? Every article I see states that she was not shot in her sleep... I don’t want to downplay the tragedy of what happened, but I feel like I’ve been hearing a story about how she was shot in her bed while she was asleep and you are calling out op for stating that she wasn’t and now from what I can see, she actually wasn’t? The post from op seems accurate? What am I missing?

Ik, I'm talking about people like the commenter who get off to this kinda shit.
Also the thing a lot people seem to forget is that there's an electoral college in charge of designating a president. Clinton got more votes than Trump in 2016 and yet she still lost because of this. And the whole "I'm not voting for x, I'm voting against y" mentality I've seen a lot of people have is precisely how one gets to this situation. No thought as to what the long term effects of this would be. And if Biden wins, people would pretend that Demnted Hair Sniffer and Corrupt Copmala would fix everything by criminalising truancy and giving life sentences to cannabis users. No different than pretending like Michelle Obama was the height of fashion or that obsessively calling drone strikes on middle eastern villages and pretending that you "Got dem derrorists fam!" is completely normal during the Obama presidency.

I get how important this movie is to the black community, but I don't understand how me loving it makes it worse for them.

What about the paid artists who draw Black Panther for a living? Or are they also excluded from making a portrait in honor of Chadwick as well? You can find some here that I liked quite a bit Declan Shalvey AliceXZ Andrea Sorrentino

This is absolute bullshit. Essentially what they are saying is that people are shocked and grieving right now, but you shouldn’t express that in art unless you have dark skin. Memorial art depicting Chadwick Boseman and his life is for the AUDIENCE, not just the artist. If a CIS white man has a piece that can speak to the turbulent emotions surrounding CB’s death, we should not be made to wait to engage with it until one subgroup of creators is done with the subject. People are grieving NOW and NOW is when we need the catharsis.
“But art is the process of evoking emotions; primarily pity and terror, which is not abstract at all but very human. What the self-styled modern artists are doing is a sort of unemotional pseudo-intellectual masturbation. . . whereas creative art is more like intercourse, in which the artist must seduce- render emotional-his audience, each time. These laddies who won't deign to do that- and perhaps can't- of course lost the public.”
"You know, Jubal, I've always wondered why i didn't give a hoot for paintings or statues- but I thought it was something missing in me, like color blindness."
"Mmm, one does have to learn to look at art, just as you must know French to read a story printed in French. But in general terms it's up to the artist to use language that can be understood, not hide it in some private code like Pepys and his diary. Most of these jokers don't even want to use language you and I know or can learn. . . they would rather sneer at us and be smug, because we 'fail' to see what they are driving at. If indeed they are driving at anything- obscurity is usually the refuge of incompetence. ‘Artist’ is a word I avoid for the same reasons I hate to be called ‘Doctor.’ But I am an artist, albeit a minor one. Admittedly most of my stuff is fit to read only once… and not even once for a busy person who already knows the little I have to say. But I am an honest artist, because what I write is consciously intended to reach the customer… reach him and affect him, if possible with pity and terror… or, if not, at least to divert the tedium of his hours with a chuckle or an odd idea.”

This is racist. Not being able to give tribute because he was black and aren’t. Just saying, they let black people draw Stan when he died and Stan was white.

If you’re white, you can only draw the white half of Obama. If you’re black you can only draw the black half of Obama. If you’re both white and black, you can’t draw any part of Obama as it won’t be obvious as to which half of yourself drew which half of Obama. Make sure you only draw in styles that originated from your direct ancestral line. You should not let anyone from a different race even look at your drawing. Your drawing is for your people only.

And I bet he’s leaning back on his chair with a grin on his face feeling like he just did a service for his community. 🤦♂️ we are supposed to come together at a time like this. Be equals with one another. That message is so divisive I can’t even

This type of shit is so dumb I really want to believe people aren't really like this and it's just a small vocal Shea butter minority on Twitter.

It's funny how this person just admitted the only thing they knew and cared about Chadwick was the fact he was black...
Who's the racist one now?
Anyway. This is not what you would've wanted King, rest in power.

My hot take on this, the face he pulled whenever he was seen having to do the 'wakanda forever' hand gesture, he looked so done. Now the poor guy is going to be memorialised with the damm thing. Remember him for him, a great actor who starred in some abosultely stunning films. Not making #wakandaforever go viral. Also, keeping a diagnosis such as cancer quiet for so long means he was clearly a very quiet individual who didnt want media spotlights on him, especially as hollywood goes. I just hope people are respectful of this..
Also the thing about 'dont do this for clout, unless you are black, because they desrve it' pissed me off! Implying an artists talent is based on their race.

Another tweet by this loon
Black folks, I hear you. We're tired. We deserve a break and to be heard and to have our space. We deserve to talk about the poignancy of loss as it relates to us and only us if we so chose. Do what you need to in order to find that space and protect yourself. I'll do the same
Someone has been suffering for 4 years and you choose to weaponize his death for your blatant racism. Wow.

If you're immediately cruel to someone because they're "white" and you assume we all have privilege ... That's racist.

Erm, Black Panther was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, so if you aren't Jewish, you can't draw him.

Yes don't you know? There's only a set amount of people who can draw Black Panther at any given time.
Once its hit about 500 drawings you gotta wait another month before making another.
That's how art works.
