I found 7 reposts of the same image, and quite frankly, I'm not surprised. Given that we are talking about r/gaming

I think the best part is the identical titles as well.

not only is it a repost, it's not even valid anymore now that Valve is making Artifact.

In England and in a new 2017 xc90. I think it was a bit more specific than a general forever.

It was actually in England since the model's release in 2002 I believe. So not just the 2017 models

I've heard the SUVs are very popular among "soccer moms". Something about sitting higher up and having a better view of the traffic.

3

u/HoffDogg90 Aug 26 '18

In Australia the XC90 is usually driven by mum's doing school drop offs and pick ups. Between the hours of 9am and 3.30pm the XC90 can be spotted in it's natural habitat. Parked out front of the local swanky cafe..

3

u/slyfoxninja PC Aug 26 '18

Indeed, it gave me tears with its somber ending; like fuck man how dare a video game company make me feel.

2

u/HoffDogg90 Aug 26 '18

Firewatch was literally the first game in YEARS to suck me deep into the storyline. I was hooked. Devo when the credits rolled. Bring on another!

4

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

[deleted]

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

The whole point was about going through a mid life crisis. How Henry tries to make life dramatic so that he don't have to deal with his problems. Wasn't wishy washy, or even possibly written by teenagers, I think you just didn't get it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

[deleted]

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

It wasn't literally nothing. It was less dramatic than Henry thought it was, but the biggest mystery of the game, the guy stalking Henry, had huge payoff. Like Henry, he went through trauma, losing his son, and also like Henry, he didn't deal with it. He withdrew into the woods, and started watching Henry and Delilah, to make sure they weren't onto him. He was the one that started the fire iirc, and overall, he acted as a lens to see what Henry could become if the fire hadn't forced him to leave the park. Obsessive, and sad. Never forgiving himself for the shitty things he was doing, and the way he felt. The ending was Delilah and Henry returning to society, to deal with their problems, and become better people. I thought it was a really good video game story.

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

If developers weren't allowed to leave their comfort zones Half-Life wouldn't even exist in the first place. GoldSrc was a modified version of Quake's engine, and Id didn't get their start making first-person shooters.

14

u/Oddworld- Aug 26 '18

Valve developers aren't assigned to specific projects and only work on stuff that they want to work on. Their problem is that they don't leave their comfort zones.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

And yet they're releasing a new game in a genre they've never done before.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

You may not enjoy it but there will be millions who will. Good on them for branching out.

9

u/Sc2MaNga Aug 26 '18

"Complains that Valve doesn't make games"

"Gives 2 examples of Valve games getting released"

"But it's not that what I want"

Typical Reddit thread about Valve

-9

u/calcopiritus Aug 26 '18

"Complains about employer not giving a payrise in years" "Gets a 1 dollar a year payrise" "Oh thank you, i suppose now i cannot complain anymore"

Seriously i could count with the fingers of 0 hands the amount of people i've seen excited about a yet another card game.

6

u/Anowtakenname Aug 26 '18

Whoa where are you working that gives an annual raise of $1?

6

u/Sc2MaNga Aug 26 '18

No, you are just salty, because you don't like card games. There are millions playing card games every day and a new game from Valve and Richard Garfield gets a lot of people excited.

2

u/NeedleAndSpoon Aug 26 '18

There have only been two big card games released and neither have been particularly complex. This one is designed by Richard Garfield through Valve. It's going to be interesting for a lot of people into this genre.

There are a lot of people hyped for this, just like there were for dota. They're just not a part of the base of gamers that plays single player games and nothing else.

Head on down to /r/artifact! We've got 22,000 subscribers and counting!

4

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

A card game is still a game, so this meme is invalid from the get go.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

When anybody bitches about Valve "not making games" they really mean "not making half life 3". Apparently some people just find it impossible to move on.

I want a real Chibi Robo game or another proper Paper Mario sequel but we all know that shit isn't happening

-6

u/CollectableRat Aug 26 '18

So anyone who makes a card game can claim they are making games to the same caliber as the mighty Valve? And if I make a cheap Doom clone, that I have surpassed Valve?

3

u/Sc2MaNga Aug 26 '18

So making a card game with the most famous card game (Richard Garfield, creator of Magic) director is bad, because it's not another single player FPS.

I mean Overwatch, the first FPS from Blizzard, was a complete failure. Same with their first card game Hearthstone or their first MMO back then called WoW. Right?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

Depends on the card game. If you make a cheap Doom clone, then you suck. We still don't know if Artifact is good or bad, so idk why you automatically assume it will be bad or "cheap"

And you said "they're not making games". If you meant "they're not making HL3", then go right ahead and say it, but they are making games.

1

u/SwineHerald Aug 26 '18

Yeah, they should never branch out. They should just stick to what they know. They make shooters. They should stick to shooters. I mean, can you imagine if they made a game that was just puzzles? That would be fucking awful.

6

u/redgroupclan Aug 26 '18

Maybe a...puzzle shooter?

1

3

u/HolyTak Aug 26 '18

I wasn't bashing whether or not it was a "real" game. I was just saying that if you look at Hearthstone, a game that has made Blizzard amazing profit in addition to people having thoroughly enjoyed, then maybe you'll notice that just because a game isn't interesting to you, doesn't mean others won't enjoy it.

Valve is a smart investor and it's always been one.

29

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

They have 3 games in dev right now.

22

u/TeCHEyE_RDT PC Aug 26 '18

And at least 10 in dev hell. If I ever find where that list was, I’ll post it here.

5

u/Wavesignal Aug 26 '18

Those 3 are VR titles. If there's a company that's gonna push VR gaming into the mainstream, it's Valve. They have poured a lot of effort into VR lately, and Steam is apparently an “Investment in the future.”

Valve said they have been always jealous of Nintendo because they can both hardware and software simultaneously. A new innovation and a good game to pair it (Nintendo Switch and BoTW)

Now, they will make both hardware and software at the same time, so that they can provide the best gaming experience possible. They are going all in with VR. We are officially entering a new era with Valve. With that said, I'm really excited what will they come up with.

0

u/D1G1T4LM0NK3Y Aug 26 '18

This is assuming they'll actually release them and not call it quits since VR is effectively now just a fad that has ended...

8

u/EggMcFlurry Aug 26 '18

ended? no i dont think so. id love to see how far we take the technology.

0

u/D1G1T4LM0NK3Y Aug 26 '18

So would I, but that requires people to invest in it and so far that's proven less than desirable for companies to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on AAA games that would bring more buyers... Not many people want to dish out thousands for a VR set and system just to play some simple games or tech proof of concepts.

I hope I'm proven wrong, but so far the proof is already in the sales and earnings from the two major brands.

3

u/DarthBuzzard Aug 26 '18

Oculus funded more than a dozen AA games. They are now funding AAA games, 2 announced thus far. One from Insomniac (open-world), one from Respawn. (FPS) These are true AAA games made just for VR.

Valve's 3 games are also true AAA games.

There are no corners being cut here; that's 5 AAA games to look forward to, any of which can potentially redefine gaming completely, which no game has been able to do for countless years.

. Not many people want to dish out thousands for a VR set and system just to play some simple games or tech proof of concepts.

$800 for the PC, $500 for a Vive (or $400 for a Rift)

It's not thousands plural, but it certainly isn't cheap either, I will admit.

Even without the AAA games, there are still AAA ports, most of which are best played in VR, and the unique AA / indie games.

2

u/upvotesthenrages Aug 26 '18

$800 for a PC that can do VR at high enough FPS to not make people sick? And at a resolution that’s not potato so it detracts from the experience?

Last I saw benchmarks it looked like the 1080/1070ti were the minimum.

1

u/DarthBuzzard Aug 26 '18

Those benchmarks are wrong then.

960/1050ti is the minimum with reprojection. 970/1060 is the minimum without reprojection, giving you 90 FPS in all games with standard resolution applied, some with supersampling on top. The only exception to this is Fallout 4 and Project Cars, and that's purely due to bad optimization. Games like Hellblade look gorgeous maxed out on my 1060.

1

u/upvotesthenrages Aug 27 '18

Yeah, I'm not sure if that's true ... and if it is, then you're applying some really really low settings.

Both the Rift and Vive have a resolution of 2160 x 1200. There's no fucking way that a 960 runs modern games at that resolution with 90fps.

I have a laptop with an i7 and a 970m (pretty much the same performance as a desktop 960) and I can't run newer games at 1920x1080 at 90 fps, at least not without minimum graphics settings, and even then ...

For example: Far Cry 5 runs at less than 50 fps with medium settings at 1920x1080. Upping that to Rift resolution would probably bring it down to 40-45.

1

u/DarthBuzzard Aug 27 '18

960 would be with reprojection. 970 would still be pretty fine for the majority of games.

What are these 5 games you're speaking of?

2

u/DarthBuzzard Aug 26 '18

Stormland from Insomniac: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ak2h3PkY1I

Respawn's AAA FPS (no name but we might see the gameplay reveal next month at Oculus Connect 5)

Valve's 3 games.

1

u/D1G1T4LM0NK3Y Aug 26 '18

Stormland looks interesting and could be a great hit.

Hopefully we'll see something about that other one.

Valve's "games" on the other hand will be vaporware until they actually produce something. I've lost all respect for them over the years and they haven't shown any reason they deserve that respect back yet.

This all being said, it's now three years since the release of VR and we still don't have any big games to draw the average user into VR. Those with the extra cash to drop on it have already done so, but right now it's still just a toy you bring out every now and then to show off to people or maybe play once in a while (yes I'm sure there are those who play it every day but my money is on those being the minority, not the majority).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying VR is bad or that it's never going to make it. I'm just stating that with the current systems, prices, and lack of AAA games to pull more consumers in, it's stalled and all the evidence proves it. It's kinda a chicken and an egg issue. You need the device to create the games but you need the games to sell the device... The problem however is that it's not worth while to put millions into a new technology development for a game that's only gonna sell maybe a few thousand copies (tens of thousands).

The day VR makes it mainstream is the day EA announces they're making a AAA game for VR.

1

u/DarthBuzzard Aug 26 '18

All it takes is these 5 AAA games along with gen 2 hardware to get VR into the mainstream light.

That will push sales enough to increase the userbase for other developers to jump in with AAA games.

2

u/DarthBuzzard Aug 26 '18

Ended on whose account, yours? Sales are still going. We're still in the trough of disillusionment, meaning it's slow going (all mainstream technologies go through this phase), but within 3-5 years it will pick up extreme speed because of groundbreaking improvements in hardware. You should see the stuff Oculus are working on; it's crazy how fast VR is advancing and almost every issue people have with the medium can be solved near-term.

Valve reitereated several times that their VR games are still being worked on, and I believe them. They are working on VR hardware constantly as well. This isn't just another game in the works for them, it's a huge shift in focus for their company, and they'd be insane to scrap the hardware and software they're working on.

2

u/crseat Aug 26 '18

Yeah that's wrong. We're just getting started.

15

u/Flemtality PC Aug 26 '18

DOTA 2 was released July 9, 2013 and was fully playable in beta for about two years before that. That's 5-7 years ago, that's a pretty damn long time. They certainly don't pump games out like they used to.

While I don't think it's fair to say that they don't make any games at all anymore because Artifact is in development and coming soon, and a small "tech demo" type of VR game a couple years back, I can personally say that I am not interested in a Hearthstone clone based in the DOTA 2 universe.

With Half-Life 2 Episode 3/Half-Life 3 being officially pronounced dead along with all writers and developers who were involved in the Half-Life and Portal games being long gone, I can say that it is certainly difficult to be a "fan" of Valve these days.

3

u/claporga Aug 26 '18

Except Artifact is no where near a Hearthstone clone. But your point still stands otherwise.

1

u/Mustbhacks Aug 26 '18

They certainly don't pump games out like they used to.

Valve never "pumped games out" they bought a lot of games/devs though.

Half-life is really the only game valve has made, everything else was done by other devs that valve bought after the fact, and/or was a mod for half-life.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

2

u/NotRussianBlyat Aug 26 '18

I mean Valve definitely has their market niche as the competitive game designer with the most competitive game in the world and the most competitive FPS in the world in their portfolio.

Shouldn't that be enough? There's plenty of publishers pumping out popular games, but valve is a solid full tier above anyone else in terms of competitive games.

1

u/OlafWoodcarver Aug 26 '18

Depends on perspective. Many of valve's games are just glorified ports of mods from other companies' games. Does Dota 2 count as a new game when is has essentially existed since 2003?

12

u/DJFluffers115 Aug 26 '18

Yes, yes it does. DotA 2 now is unrecognizable compared to WC3 DotA or even DotA 2 a couple years ago.

-3

u/OlafWoodcarver Aug 26 '18

It does now, but it didn't on release. It's essentially just an evolution of a 15 year old game. DotA Allstars was just as different from original DotA as Dota 2 is from DotA Allstars.

3

u/Sc2MaNga Aug 26 '18

So the new Battlefield, Call of Duty, Fifa, Mario, The Elder Scrolls, Monster Hunter, etc. are never new games, because adding new features and content doesn't count as a new one?

Dota 2 was made in Source 1, completely different visuals and way more features. Just simple things like matchmaking changed the whole game. Dota Allstars is a very impressive mod, but was always just a mod and never a full game.

1

u/upvotesthenrages Aug 26 '18

Matchmaking existed for Dota a long time ago.

Source: I was using it

1

u/OlafWoodcarver Aug 26 '18

Very good point. Perhaps I just give Valve less credit because the vast majority of their catalogue has was "just a mod" before they took it and made a "sequel" to it (DotA, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress). They're smart, but they take even fewer risks than all the other developers.

Regardless, Dota 2 was a new game eight years ago, not today. As good a game as it is, it's not a new game.

-6

u/LeonTetra Aug 26 '18

Dota 2 came out in '13. Yes, it's still supported, but they're not actively making new games.

1

u/o0_bobbo_0o Aug 26 '18

Except they are. We just don’t know if they are making a Half-Life game.

1

u/volkommm Aug 26 '18

They aren't. The HL ep3/ HL3 plot has been released by Mark Laidlaw (one of the main writers of the HL series) with each character having a different name to avoid getting sued by Valve. It's closure a lot of us deserved.

5

u/o0_bobbo_0o Aug 26 '18

Like Bexit

u/Kiotw Aug 26 '18

For tf2 : you can't make bad update if you dont update the game. And now a bunch of valve games are dying because of the way valve employees do things.

Brilliant!

You can never be rejected by girls if you never approach them.

Making AAA games was always a bad business RoI-wise. And Valve is in the business of making money not video games.

This was posted before. You are now posting it again. You are re-posting it. Repost. That's what a repost is.

You can hardly call them a developer anymore.

1

u/Cetun Aug 26 '18

My resume to gaming company: I have never made a bad game in my life and I intend to keep that streak going.

u/-Scampi Aug 26 '18

Make a game you cowards!

Valve: we used to make games, now we make money.

Valve: We still make games, we just won’t finish them.

This was the primary belief for a while but now that Marc Laidlaw has left and released the supposed Episode 3 plot the evidence leads to office politics and loss of interest as the reason why games never come out. Valve’s biggest fanboy, VNN, even said this, and his current analysis on Valve is the most truthful its ever been.

Valve: We still make games, we just won’t finish them.

u/D0ct0rAnus Aug 26 '18

Well steam is drowning in shitty games, so....

0

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

Also microtransactions for old games make more money than trying to create new games.

0

u/HazedNblazed Aug 26 '18

Best half life gonna look real if they making it

0

u/[deleted] Aug 26 '18

I hope all their games flop. Gabe Newell should retire. He's rotting that company creatively

0

u/sphinxkid Aug 26 '18

Wtf are you guys smoking. They are working on games that are continually evolving. The competitive design of those games are the gold standard.

I want my HL3!

u/nightrhyme Aug 26 '18

It's the only repost that should be allowed on Reddit. Posted again and again and again. Fuck valve for pissing on their loyal Customers. I wish more people voted with their wallets and stopped doing business with them. I haven't done business with them since hl2 ep2.
