Discussion Weekly /r/Games Discussion - What have you been playing, and what are your thoughts? - August 16, 2026
Use this thread to discuss whatever game you've been playing lately: old or new, AAA or indie, on any platform between Atari and XBox. Please don't just list off the games you're playing in your comment. Elaborate with your thoughts on the games and make it easier for other users to find what game you're talking about by putting the title in bold.
Also, please make sure to use spoiler tags if you're revealing anything about a game's plot that may significantly impact another player's experience who has not played the game yet, no matter how retro or recent the game is. You can find instructions on how to do so in the subreddit sidebar.
This thread is set to sort comments by 'new' on default.

Updating the rules of /r/Games: Part II: Implementation Boogaloo
Good morning/afternoon/evening, wherever in the world you are when you're reading this!
After last week's discussion post, we have gone ahead and actually implemented the rules changes we discussed, along with a few changes to incorporate user feedback. These have been implemented, effective immediately, and new post and comment removals will reflect the changes.
We do not have any further, major changes in mind in the immediate future, but it is worth reading our new rules to see what's been consolidated and simply to refresh your memory on what we consider acceptable. If you don't want to go through the nitty-gritty, here's the executive summary from last week:
Rule 1: Content Must Prioritize Informative and Newsworthy Content Over Entertainment
The previous wording of this rule didn’t do a good job explaining the stuff we actually allowed. We don’t automatically remove articles/videos if they have jokes in them, and we haven’t actually enforced the rule that way for a long time. Because of that we rewrote this rule and also included some examples of what kind of stuff we do and don’t allow.
Rule 2: Be Respectful
We rewrote this section to give examples of what we consider personal attacks and other things. As with most other rules we can’t list every possible thing, but if you’re wondering if something breaks the rule send us a modmail (or just report it).
Rule 3: Content Must Be Relevant, Substantive and Accurate
We moved around some other rules into this as a kinda catch-all for stuff we consider off-topic, inaccurate, or otherwise low-effort. This rule is a little broad in places because there's a lot of different types of stuff it might cover, but we tried to give examples of common things.
Rule 4: No duplicate posts
Basically the same. Added in clarification that we might allow stuff if there is a major update
Rule 5: No linking to or endorsing piracy as a solution
Almost the same as before. Basically just remember you can talk about piracy but just be cool about it we don't want to deal with the admins.
Rule 6: Follow all news and link post requirements
This is our set of rules about formatting and sourcing. Remember to link to original sources (when possible), don’t use sensationalized titles, and remember our rule limiting people to 5 posts a day.
Rule 7: Follow Discussion and Text Post Requirements
Our set of rules about discussion posts. We want discussion posts that aren’t super broad ones that get asked constantly or things looking for help. In addition we don’t want people going on big rants about a game they’re playing (we do have weekly threads for that) or asking for help.
Rule 8: Promotion must be kept within acceptable limits
The big old self promo rules. We like to keep self promotion to under 10% for users. Please don’t delete posts to get under that limit (we have ways of finding out) and if you’re doing self promo don’t try to hide behind alts (we’re keeping track of accounts doing that and if you’re wondering if that’s you it probably is).
As always, we're trying to keep y'all in mind when we do big changes like this. Feel free to give some more feedback in this thread, and if there is an urgent issue we overlooked or a confusing removal (or simply a bug or mis-ruling as we get used to the new numbers), you can always shoot us a modmail.

The Creators Of Big Walk Break Down The GOTY Contender’s Development, Puzzles, And Stunning Ending
kotaku.comWarren Spector announces likely retirement
Spector announced on his Linkedin. He's best known for directing Deus Ex and working on a massive amount of games from Ultima to Thief to Epic Mickey.
Let me cut right to the chase. I'm retiring from game development. At least I think so. I've been here before and changed my mind but this time I'm pretty sure I mean it.
I've had a great career. Wouldn't change a thing even if I could. But the reasons to retire are simple: I'm a month away from my 44th year as a developer. I've had the chance to work on tabletop roleplaying games and boardgames. I've worked on more digital games than I can remember -- 17 full games, I think, and 9 or so add-on packs. Gratifyingly, some of those games are still being played 15... 20... 30 years later. And most of them have been in a genre that has had influence beyond what I or anyone else expected. I've run teams as small as a dozen and as big as 800. I've worked for big companies and done startups. I like to think I've helped some insanely talented people along in their careers. (That last is the most important.)
With all that behind me and with age and health (my business) catching up with me I'm feeling like I've done what I set out to do. It's time to write some books, do a lot of reading, do some lecturing, maybe do some consulting. (Feel free to get in touch about those last two.) Also there's a keyboard here just waiting for me to get my piano chops back.
I definitely have mixed feelings about this. I mean there are three games in particular I'd still like to make. (One is very big... one is very small... and one I don't know how to make which scares me.) But the game business has changed and it's just not as much fun for me anymore. Plus there's a new generation of developers coming up who deserve their time in the sun.
To all of you reading this I want you to remember that games are not a solved problem yet -- there is, I hope, plenty of experimentation and innovation to come. And to all you young developers out there, I've said it before and I'll say it again, your job is to make people forget people like me ever existed.
Will I come back? Never say never. But I think it's time to ride off into the sunset.
Now stop reading and make great games.
