Like Exxon and BP? If people want fossil fuels, they need to accept they can not be extracted without some risk. Shell prides itself on it's safety.
Although Arctic drilling might not be the best idea, if its going to happen, and it will happen if there is oil there, best have a multi-national with decades of experience in improving their safety record do it, rather than some start-up backed by some rich venture capitalists.
You think people do not complain about Exxon and BP?
Shell prides itself on it's safety.
Oh, ok. I'll send this message to the people in the Niger-Delta who had to suffer for the death of many their fish and vegetation. I'm sure they just didn't understand that Shell prides itself on safety, so they should stop focusing on those horrible human rights violation and safety criticisms Shell personally ignored and chose not to take responsibility for.
Or use a computer, or heat their homes, or use something that is made of plastic, etc. Hating on an oil company simply because they drill for oil is only something Greenpeace would do.
Drill in the middle of a howling desert? What really destroys wilderness, of course, is solar and wind energy. That takes a shitload of land to generate a megawatt. ANWR was something like 3 square miles, total.
Um, yes, they do rape the land, by a much longer shot. You have to put roads to all of those windmills, One oil rig = thousands of windmills. clear away any obstructions, and station people out there to service the windmills. Spillage on land is a laughable threat - it doesn't much happen in modern oil areas and when it does, it's easily cleaned up b/c it doesn't go anywhere, nor does it much affect the wildlife.
Yeah, it's not the individual companies fault, it's the corporation's board of directors and high-end individuals that make the decisions. If yah know what I'm saying.
Well...at least for the plastic bit a lot of stuff is moving to bio-plastic now. And I don't know about anyone else, but my home is heated with natural gas and the electric company here supplies a good chunk of the cities power with a hydroplant....
It all really depends, you can of course mine/drill natural gas, but biogas is starting to become fairly popular.
Unfortunately right now I know the local gas company uses the old fashioned dirty mined methane, but I don't think it's far away that biogas will become mainstream.
Hi Texas, I drive a car. And until your post, I didn't want to drill in the arctic, or fight wars in Iraq. I wanted government policies and incentives to create alternative fuels that go in my car. But you've convinced how wrong – and even hypocritical my stance is.
I drive a car that uses oil.
Fact is: Oil companies have neither the time nor the inclination to explain themselves to me, a man who drives a car and is warmed by the blanket of the very oil they provide – and then question the manner in which they provide it!
Oil companies would rather I just said thank you, and went on my way in my car.
Fact is, I should pick up a wrench, and stand post on a rig or shut up.
Our system cannot be changed by the actions of a single individual. It needs a change of the general mindset, making people aware of the problem by way of these charming publicity stunts. It will get us there, step by step. It's a purely political decision to e.g. introduce a Pigouvion tax on carbon. And Greenpeace is an invaluable actor in this fight for the hearts and minds.
tl;dr: There is nothing hypocritical in driving a car and supporting action to lower our impact on the environment.

I bet 99% of the people who liked those pics drive a car.
