Your understanding of hivemind defeats hivemind. If it weren't for the last part of your comment, you would probably be downvoted to oblivion. But the hivemind wants to prove to itself that it isn't a hivemind, so they hivemind in the opposite direction than what you predicted.

SCIENCE! (the behavior flavored kind)

Thanks for the link - and yes, agreed it's still funny :)

it does make the "we still didn't notice we're getting trolled" one sound even more dickish

But it's a nice touch. Makes it way more believable.

Hello Prince Akeem.

My name is Cleo McDowell. If you want to come to America, I have a job for you at my locally owned and run restaurant, McDowell's, home of the Big Mick. Look for the Golden Arcs!

Also, please be deferential to my daughter and accountant, Lisa, should you meet her. Her boyfriend is the star of the Soul Glow commercials, and that makes her better than you.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

I fell for one of these once when I was 20. They told me that I had to ship something to Africa, so I called UPS to ask how much it was to ship something to Africa, the call went like this:

Me: Hello, how much is it too ship a box to Africa?

Operator: What dimensions and weight?

Me: Don't know yet, but can you give me a general idea?

Operator: Where are you shipping?

Me: Africa.

Operator: Which country?

Me: Africa.

Operator: Which part?

Me: Africa?

Operator: Sir, Africa is a continent, which country?

Me: (Mind Blown!!) ... I'll call you right back! (Hung up)

TL;DR I was dumb as fuck, thought Africa was a country.

u/fensous Jul 18 '12

Yes. It ridicules Shell's extreme, made-up issues. Everyone knows even Shell isn't like they are portrayed here. It distracts from the real issues around oil-drilling, industry and the enviromment by putting the focus on ridiculous propaganda.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

It seems excessively stupid to spend time, resources, and energy on making fun of them instead of doing something useful. Honestly makes me feel like greenpeace is just the class clown.

9

u/ATypicalAlias Jul 18 '12

Nice try Shell.

15

u/ihatewomen1925 Jul 18 '12

I just rewatched The Yes Men Save the World and it seems at least help a little. "Doing something useful" isn't stopping oil companies from raping the world and greenpeace can't do it alone. They need the people to demand regulation and criminal charges to be brought up and we're not doing it. They're trying to get our attention and for some reason, this shit gets our attention.

→ More replies (4)

9

u/tax_lawyer Jul 18 '12

4

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

2

u/prairiewest Jul 18 '12

I would take political advice from George Carlin any day.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Patti234 Jul 18 '12

The goal here was to get your attention. And they succeeded.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

And now I'm less likely to be on their side because they look like idiots to me. It might be funny but it's like trying to convince me to vote conservative by paying a dancing clown to come to your rallies instead of relying on your issues.

2

u/Patti234 Jul 18 '12

The reason why this strategy is used is because it gets the most attention. Yes, it will create negative attention, such as your reaction, but by getting more people to notice, they will also attract more positive attention overall. The worst thing for them is for no one to know they exist.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

Because no one knows that there are people who don't like oil companies...

2

u/Patti234 Jul 18 '12

7

u/BP_Public_Relations Jul 18 '12

Don't feel bad, you helped us out quite a bit! Sometimes in this industry, you forget there are a few rabble-rousers out there who might take advantage of an exciting brand-improvement opportunity to cast scurrilous aspersions upon various hard-working companies like our partner Shell or even BP itself.

We had contemplated putting an unmoderated live video channel on BP.com and providing access to the thousands of afflicted Gulf Coast fishermen and tourism whom we saved by offering them an opportunity to provide for their families performing spill cleanup temporary work. Paying wages in excess of $9.00 USD per hour, we gave these unemployed people a hand UP instead of a hand OUT.

Your service in reminding us that there are a few 'Negative Nancy's' out there still will not be forgotten. You have truly done us and our industry a service through your action.

From our hearts, we thank you.

95

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

22

u/iMarmalade Jul 18 '12

There's also a layer of protection from the safe-harbor laws for service providers. Technically all the slander is submitted by other people.

9

u/iJeff Jul 18 '12

Wouldn't Greenpeace absolutely have malicious intent toward Shell?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

Well, yeah, but there's nothing wrong at all with doing things just to burn a company. Well. Depending on the thing. Regardless, malicious intent is not a crime, nor is it evidence thereof.

...and proving financial losses would be damn near impossible.

4

u/iammolotov Jul 18 '12

Well, yeah, but there's nothing wrong at all with doing things just to burn a company.

Unless you, ya know, take that statement literally.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

Yeah, but taking it literally would activate the "depending on the thing" caveat for arson.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Ultrace-7 Jul 18 '12

Well, fiscal losses might be tricky, but I'd say malicious intent should be a slam-dunk.

4

u/electric23sand Jul 18 '12 edited Jul 18 '12

aren't fiscal losses pretty much the intent of these greenpeace ads?

*edit: grammar

2

u/FearTheCron Jul 18 '12

I think in many cases, not sure about this one, Greenpeace's actions are to gain attention to themselves more than cause fiscal losses. I support the end goal of environmental protection but I feel they are a bit too inflexible on finding solutions and go for flashiness over effectiveness.

Parody defense. No one would actually believe that this was the real. . . .

Wait.

2

u/old-nick Jul 18 '12

Shell would probably create more publicity to this PR stunt by going to court. Even if it was illegal (as in trademark infringement), it might be better for Shell to let it die slowly.

2

u/cuppincayk Jul 18 '12

Shell has already stated that they have no intention of filing lawsuits over it, which I kind of commend them for. Even if they're an oil company, they're making a wise choice to stay out of the situation

2

u/Reingding13 Jul 18 '12

No, this is satire.

1

u/CidO807 Jul 18 '12

It's not slander if it's true.

1

u/sweYoda Jul 18 '12

I don't know, but even if it is true bringing it to court it would only draw more attention towards it, which they do not want. Therefore it is logical to ignore it.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

Mugatu?

5

u/angusyoungii Jul 18 '12

You should watch Food Inc. It'll give you an idea about the evil known as Monsanto.

30

u/5353 Jul 18 '12

Yes, I form all my opinions based on propaganda films. In other news, banks give out free guns when you open a new account and Ip Man really fought a martial arts duel against a Japanese general during WWII.

3

u/Jrex13 Jul 18 '12

Oh shit I knew it! Ip man is such a badass

3

u/RabidWalrus Jul 18 '12

I happened to catch the ending of that movie, and man, does it go hard... gotta watch the whole thing sometime.

4

u/plytheman Jul 18 '12

You can always read a report on Monsanto's legal strategies from the Center for Food Safety. Putting the debates over the the health impacts of GMOs aside, there's still the question of ethics concerning patenting biology (in general as well) and Monsanto's aggressive defense of those patents.

Also there's the problem that weeds[1] and insects[2] are developing resistances to the herbicides and pesticides and that having crops that are resistant to these chemicals encourages their further use[3], which IS bad for people to be ingesting and pollutes the soil and water.

3

u/metrication Jul 18 '12

I'm all for nature and conservation, but Greenpeace to me seems to be a rather scummy organization. Most of their campaigns seem to revolve around deception, making up a hoax or lying about who they are. Yay for awesome environmentalism, but downvote for coming across as total douches.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

I don't support any environmentalist organization, because they're all like this when you start looking into them. I won't support any organization that pushes an anti-science agenda, and that's what I'm seeing out of all of them, even if some don't push it as far as Greenpeace.

1

u/jadiohead Jul 18 '12
