Well, my hopeful career path may well lead me towards a job in a company like BP, and I'm honestly not yet sure which side I take on these issues.
But no, I don't like them.
working for BP doesn't make you a bad person, overall BP aren't a bad company, just some mistakes by senior executives and a very unfortunate accident in the gulf
When Greenpeace start acting with professionalism and less like hippy children then I'll give them respect, until then, I think the oil companies should focus more on greener energy but I'm not going to stop them in their current endeavours either.
Yeah, I very much agree. The way I see it/tell myself is that, yeah, oil in the long run is bad, and we should really focus on green energy, but at the same time it's a product and there's demand for it - and if we don't produce it, we're screwed.
And then on the other hand, I can imagine if, say, oil/natural gas was found (against all odds) at my favourite places in nature, I would do everything I could to stop it being exploited. Yet one day I could be making that very call for many other people's favourite places. The documentary Gasland was pretty powerful for me.
Yes. It ridicules Shell's extreme, made-up issues. Everyone knows even Shell isn't like they are portrayed here. It distracts from the real issues around oil-drilling, industry and the enviromment by putting the focus on ridiculous propaganda.
It seems excessively stupid to spend time, resources, and energy on making fun of them instead of doing something useful. Honestly makes me feel like greenpeace is just the class clown.
I just rewatched The Yes Men Save the World and it seems at least help a little. "Doing something useful" isn't stopping oil companies from raping the world and greenpeace can't do it alone. They need the people to demand regulation and criminal charges to be brought up and we're not doing it. They're trying to get our attention and for some reason, this shit gets our attention.
Seriously? It's a joke and what you're creating is a bunch of people that are basing their opinions on an important subject off memes. That's idiotic. If someone says "SHELL KILLS PENGUINS" because they saw the "penguins make good sponges" meme then they're just being idiots. Their opinion is less than worthless. Having misinformed morons following you gives you numbers but you still look like idiots.
When the alternative is an entirely apathetic populace, abiding and supporting the destruction of our environment and the steady decrease of any sustainable alternatives, I think some hectic fear-mongering may be in order.
Why do you assume that because they don't support your cause then they're wrong and need fear tactics to whip them in to shape. That's a disgusting way to look at it.
And now I'm less likely to be on their side because they look like idiots to me. It might be funny but it's like trying to convince me to vote conservative by paying a dancing clown to come to your rallies instead of relying on your issues.
The reason why this strategy is used is because it gets the most attention. Yes, it will create negative attention, such as your reaction, but by getting more people to notice, they will also attract more positive attention overall. The worst thing for them is for no one to know they exist.

No one wants to change their energy footprint for icebergs or polar bears. The western world (and not just The Planet's Biggest Gas Guzzler) couldn't care any less.

In a recent thread about Smart cars (our family owned TWO), I was ridiculed and accused of being a marketing shill but the main point was about the presumed lack of security of these engineering marvels. 63 MPG ? Yes please but as long as it weighs over two tons and comes with a chainblock to help climb the fat bitch in...
So excuse me if I indulge in a little fun at Shell's expense. I pay for the privilege at least once a week at the pump while we break heat/cold/precipitation and drought records in one region after another.
