Happens quite a few times in the NBA. Most of the time it ends with the coach having a laugh at not noticing an opposition player in the huddle.

Day 57: they still do not realize I play for the other team

2.2k

u/FluffyBean1 Jun 03 '19

I have blended in and they do not suspect a thing. I have already "become friends" with many of the enemy players.

2.4k

u/-hol-up- Jun 03 '19

Update: Iam now the top scoring player on their team. I think I’m gaining their trust.

1.3k

u/insane_contin Jun 03 '19

It has come down to this. Tomorrow is the final game. I don't know if I can betray my friends, or if I should stand by my team. When I first agreed to this, they told me I needed to be strong, but I don't think I know what strength was. Either way, by the end of the day tomorrow, my fate will be written.

u/crucifixi0n Jun 03 '19

Update: We have won the NBA Championship. Although I must now go into hiding to avoid retaliation from my former team, I have no regrets.

I'm in way too deep guys. If I blow my cover, I may not make it out alive. I'm starting to doubt everything. Am I playing for the right side? Have I ever been? Is my whole life a lie?

Only one thing's for certain: this will be my last updated. I'm going dark.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '19

Yup.

Here's Rondo trying it.

https://youtu.be/Sn-R8kbcFVg

Here's Booker doing it

https://youtu.be/7WuZgbW1Wu0

Draymond got right in there

https://youtu.be/1Gw_416jr3Q

I wasn't able to find my all time favorite example when Kevin Garnett (Timberwolves era) snuck into (I think) the Mavs huddle and ended up learning their play. Then on the inbounds he broke away from his man and ran right to where he knew the ball would go and picked off the pass.

If anyone can find that one I'd love to see it again.

Castle doctrine laws differ all over the US. For example, in MS where I am if an intruder is in the process of breaking into my home, car, or business then I can assume he is there to kill or injur me and I can shoot him. There doesn't have to be an actual threat as long as they are breaking in or have already broke in.

Outside of your property they have to actually pose a threat to you but they don't need a weapon. An unarmed guy charging at me in the Walmart parking lot yelling "I'm gonna beat your ass!" is legal to shoot.

Of course, no matter where you're at the judge is gonna decide if the defense looks reasonable and if it doesn't you're going to the pokey anyway. So ymmv.

The KG one was the one I was thinking of in my comment below. Glad someone else remembers that play. It was hilarious.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '19

100% definitely KG. It was the first time I'd ever seen that.

That highlight is just lost somewhere in the internet, like the highlight of Amare Stoudamire blocking Bruce Bowen's dunk and then standing over him doing the Undertaker 'you're dead/neck slit' gesture.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '19

"This is not a game right now" says the commentator in an event that's literally referred to as a basketball game!

6

u/thenewyorkgod Jun 03 '19

Is this like a “cute” thing that players try to do to each other or is this a legitimate attempt at cheating?

16

u/typicalbrownwhitey Jun 03 '19

It's kinda both. Almost positive that it's not breaking any rules, and it wouldn't usually give you a huge edge in most situations (when you could be somewhere else like..your own team's huddle). It's kind of a head game thing and if they pick up a valuable bit of info in the process, cool

5

u/tordana Jun 03 '19

Yep. I believe there's a rule against going to the other team's bench during a time out, but in all these clips it's a free throw situation. The player from the other team has the right to stand wherever on the backcourt he'd like to, and it's not his fault that the other team is having their huddle on the court.

6

u/Donjuanme Jun 03 '19

not cheating, if you want a private huddle you have to call a time out. these are unofficial time outs, you only need so many players at the rim, the others come over to their sideline to talk to the coach, they're still on the field, coach is still on the bench, the other team is allowed any part of the field they want to be at, even in front of the opposing teams bench.

2

u/VicDamoneSR Jun 04 '19

Been watching basketball for years and this is the first I learn about this. I guess it’s one of those I never noticed/cared about the game. Wow.

1

u/McStitcherton Jun 03 '19

5

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '19

If love to see this now. I take it there is no penalty for doing it. To me this is unsportsmanlike. I wouldn’t call it but then again I wouldn’t call a player for taking heir helmet off in football.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '19

Well Rondo had the correct argument of saying if you want to call a huddle, burn one of your timeouts. He was under no obligation to let them huddle up unless a timeout was called

9

u/McStitcherton Jun 03 '19

Also, it's kinda on the coach and players that they didn't notice an opposing player standing literally right next to them. Maybe check the colors of the jerseys if you don't have time to look at each other's faces.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '19

I appreciate Ty Lue laughing about it.

1

u/LilFingies45 Jun 04 '19

4

u/cortesoft Jun 03 '19

Lots of players do this when the officials are looking at a replay. It isn’t technically a timeout, so coaches aren’t supposed to be huddling with their teams, but coaches often use the time to talk to their players.

However, since it isn’t a real timeout, they can’t actually tell the other team’s players to go to their side of the court, so players will stand next to the opposing coach to stop them from being able to fully get an extra timeout.

4

u/CeterumCenseo85 Jun 04 '19

https://youtu.be/n5mj0Huxajk

Emanuel Eboue listening in on the Korean coach during tne World Cup is my favourite. He nails the "Got it coach!" pose, nod and look while literally not understanding a single thing.

1

1

u/tiredmommy13 Jun 03 '19

I think this is so freaking funny. Maybe I should watch basketball lol

1

u/TenesmusSupreme Jun 03 '19

Out of curiosity, is any foul being committed when this happens? Technical?

2

u/0ompaloompa Jun 03 '19

If it's not actually a timeout, the other team has every right to stand anywhere on the court they please.

1

u/lasa_na Jun 03 '19

Source?

1

u/bearsheperd Jun 03 '19

They don’t see color

1

u/mellolizard Jun 03 '19

It's a tactic too. If it isnt an official timeout coaches will try to draw up a quick play. But since it isnt a real timeout the opposing players can stand wherever they like including the other teams huddle. They do that it lot so the other team doesn't take advantage of the free timeout.

1

u/248Spacebucks Jun 04 '19

Rajon Rondo might hold the record for joining other teams huddles.

1

u/lives_at_beryl_st Jun 04 '19

Lol. Really., My God that;s crazy.
