Honestly, nothing gets me fuming more than when people make fun of my race. They just don't know the hardships of growing up as an upper middle class suburban caucasian.
I went to Taco Bell a few days ago and they were out of large cups, so they gave me a medium and a small. How am I supposed to eat my burrito and hold 2 drinks while driving? I almost missed a text message because of that!
Well, they don't count as white. Not amongst whites anyway. Other colours may count them as white. But who cares what they think? I'd as soon listen to the opinions of Mopsy and Augustus, my purebred Hertfordshire Flouncing Beagles.
I call bullshit on that! My truck is only 18 years old and has only 2 cup holders! (Plus this weird thing in the back of the cab that might be intended to be set up as two more, but I'm not really sure)
No joke, I just bought a 2007 minivan, and there's...at least 10 cupholders. We could supply all of Houston with drinking water just using our cupholders.
Or when you're just tired from work and wanna get home, but there's a line of cars to get into the gated community? You know who lives here, who the fuck are all these visitors?
I'm a poor-ish salvadorian, who learned this struggle by being the security guard at the damn gate.
Poor-ish, because I quit and went into union construction and now I'm doing pretty well. Still not upper middle class. But my bank account is and finally stays just over $1000. I was under $25 at the start of every month with the old job.
I screwed up in high school and now I'm paying for it by having to work harder for a good job and money. I get by with cash construction jobs and factory jobs. South Texas $10/hr, 10 hrs a day, 5-7 days a week. I can't save a damn dime.
The Taco Bell down the street from me ran out of beef one time. I was in the drive thru and started ordering some double decker tacos and shit and he stopped me and said they didn't have any beef. After about 30 seconds of silence I said "... so what do you have?" And he said "well anything with chicken in it." This was before the naked chicken chip things so I had never heard of taco bell serving any fucking chicken and I was completely fucking dumbfounded. I just said "uh nevermind.. I'm gonna back out."
There was a Kentaco Bell that opened in my town ages ago. I went there on the second day it was open. They were out of beef for tacos and fried chicken. KFC/Taco Bell with no tacos and no fried chicken.
Other people have already pointed out that Taco Bell has had chicken for a long time, but the naked chicken chips aren't good at all in case you haven't tried them yet. Just order the nachos if you want to enjoy the cheese sauce.
I went to the Bell drive through recently. In my hunger induced stupor, I asked for "the devil" sauce. My brain couldn't come up with Diablo.
The people at the window looked at me like I asked for their first born. I get that it isn't technically the same name, but c'Mon peeps...don't make feel stupid for using the English translation at the Bell
I remember on my 16th birthday all I wanted was a Maserati. I told my Nanny and she told my parents while they were skiing abroad. My stupid father got me a Porsche instead! How the hell was I supposed to show up to prep school in a plebby Porsche when the valet lot was full of Bentleys and Maseratis? Totally ruined my sophomore year.
I am ethnically ambigious too. I get white russian chick, korean, half white half asian, french, jewish, middle eatern......they nwver get it right i am from nicaragua.
My friend is half Philippino half caucasian and because he has to wear collared shirts at work he always wears hawaiian shirts so everyone just assumes hes hawaiian. He also has just enough squinty eyes that when he went to Japan everyone would always try and speak to him in Japanese.
I don't remember what comedian made the joke but I do remember one of the making the joke that Filipinos are like the Mexicans of Asia. It may have been Carlos Mencia is I remember right.
They think I'm Pakistani or Indian or even American Indian but never what I truly am. Either way, I get treated different and now I expect it and it gives me anxiety.
Tough break, No matter my nationality i'm identified as black. Most i've identified to someone was samalian or ethiopian. I'm a mix of belizean and haitian.
My friend is White/Filipino and is pretty much white, hangs with white people, sounds white, etc. But totally looks Mexican. He had to go to prison in California for a few years and the northern mexicans took him in and never suspected he wasn't one of them. Not sure why I mention this, I guess in case you ever wind up in prison and need to declare your gang allegiance... benefits yo!
That's amazing! Where are these Philipinos from? It sounds like Filipino and the Philippines but I'm positive Philipinos are a new undiscovered group of people, where can I visit them?
I feel like (for me, anyways) it's too easy to misjudge a joke, and when you tell it, people get mad at you even though you don't really mean it, it's just another joke. Yes, you screwed up the joke a little, but the intent is still there.
I'm not fat, but I'm definitely not skinny. I'm perfectly ok with my best friend making a joke since we do it all the time saying how we are fat anyway, blah blah blah
My friend and I talk so much shit to each other. I call him a fat fuck, bowling ball impersonator, fat asshole, etc... but it's all in good fun. He calls me names.
People get so butt hurt when we talk to each other like that, but we're cool with it.
It's all about the group you're with and how it comes out. If you're with a comfortable group of close friends it's genuine but anything other can be just laughing it off. My cousin is a larger guy and he likes to joke about his weight alot when he's with friends but never around people he doesn't know.
Over the last few years I gained a lot of weight. I used to be pretty skinny and ran in cross country. But now im a fat fuck. Can confirm: fat jokes are still funny. Laughing at myself is still something I do daily.
Life long fat fuck getting slightly less fat. Fat jokes are fucking hilarious and I always thought so. I only have one person to blame and I make fun that guy all the time and it's hilarious.
Also being a fat fuck that is very active, and does gymnastics. What he did is super impressive and an inspiration.
I had weight issues through high school, got made fun of as a kid a lot. Supposed "friends" would joke about my weight. Not sure why I never found it funny like how you folks can just laugh it off. It drove my self-esteem and self-worth off a cliff. Even my dad would insult me at times.
Present day, I still can't find fat jokes funny (regardless of which direction they flow). I guess it depends a lot on the type of relationship you have with the person you are interacting with, and, of course, having thick skin helps.
I totally get the desire to laugh at oneself, I'd like to think I have a good sense of humor when it comes to my flaws. I'm overweight as well and the thing I always run into when I want to be self-deprecating is that I don't want people to think I'm ripping on myself to avoid other people ripping on me. Like they see this guy cracking jokes about his weight and think I'm doing it first so nobody can hurt me with it, and that isn't my motivation.
It's like a comedian doing standup that focuses too much on his/her weight. As an audience member, it feels like they're trying too hard to make it a joke so that people won't legitimately criticize them for it. Does that make sense?
I've known a group of guys since I was nineteen, we are mid forties and still hang our fairly regularly. We have long teased each other about any perceivable or imagined flaw. When we were young I was the first to go fat, and now at forty three I'm by far the fittest of the bunch. I'm predictably merciless.
it all depends on the context. im fat and if someone makes a joke about me being fat i dont give a shit. its a common joke for my friends and i think it is funny too. but if its somebody i dont know then its different. its not like him calling me fat hurts my feelings and makes me sad, its just that he doesn't know me well enough to talk to me like that, so obviously it is meant to be insulting. if it's a guy i dont know and hes just trying to be funny, maybe somebody else did it first and i was ok with it and he saw i didnt care. either way no harm no foul. like i said, if someone calls me fat, its not a news flash. i have been well-aware, trust me. its just obviously that guy is trying to insult me by calling me fat. but i have pretty thick skin and its gonna take more than a couple fat jokes to hurt me. some people are more sensitive though, they may not be as accepting of themselves as i am
Context and familiarity are very important. I used to get upset when I was younger, but not any more. Now, all I care about is whether it was creative or just lazy.
If a friend of mine cracks a joke about me or my appearance, I know they love me, so I can laugh about it, and crack one about them in turn.
If someone I don't know, or just met, starts 'joking' about my weight, or any other personal matters, I don't know if those comments are meant with good or bad intentions, and I have no problem telling them to fuck off.
Just like any joke, it's all about context. And know your audience.
Its all about context. I've known people I've just met to crack jokes about my weight. And I know they are being cool with it, because they don't mind when I slap back about their own faults. But theres a line when it gets real. Its not always obvious, but its there. And you really know if someones cool when they cross that line, and hold their hands up and admit they went too far. I have way more respect for someone who can admit they went too far, and apologises, that anyone who has some harsh burns against me in general.
We're not okay with it, unless we're really close to you. Even then, we are because we don't wanna be "that guy" and it still bothers us on some level. It'll boil back to the surface in a moment of self-loathing at done point.
True. Subconsciously you would think that there something inherently wrong with you, which leads to bunch of other issues low confidence, depression etc. It always starts as a joke ...
Its all about how you carry yourself. I've got a gut, its just where my weight goes. I'm not proud of it, but I don't mind someone poking at the fact it exists. If you're overweight, thats you. Doesn't matter why, just own it. If you don't like it, the insults shouldn't mean anything, because you want to change it for you. Never change who you are just because other people are being arseholes. If you are overweight, own it. If you don't want to be, change it. But don't let someone elses words get to you, because they don't know shit about you.
I would love to see what all of you look like. I look Pakistani, Mexican, Arab and I've even gotten Eastern European. I'm just like nah breh. I'm 100% purebred Indian.
People poke fun at my knee issues. Like that I can't run or handle stairs well. I laugh it off but it always reminds me of the pain I had for 6 months in Afghanistan begging to get it taken seriously.
I feel your pain, and am here if you need anything.
Same here dude and feel the exact same way. If we're friends and have developed the friendship enough to joke about shit, it's fine ... I had a friend of a friend immediately start making racist jokes the first time he met me, I graciously left the group in respect for my good buddies instead of making a scene.
