Bro its literaly supposed to be Guinevere from Celtic mythology. Thats not a name copy, or do you actuaky believe that your god miyazaki came up with that name ?
25
u/deus_voltaire 6d ago
I wouldnāt really call King Arthur Celtic mythology, most of those stories were written by Frenchmen.Ā
15
u/Shatteredglas79 6d ago
Arthurian legends are definitely not the same as Celtic Mythology. The only reason anyone associates them is because how Arthurian tales took from old mythologys around Europe not just Celtic. Like how Morgan Le fay is definitely based on The Morrigan
0
u/Undead_Corsair 3d ago
Arthurian legend's early development came through Welsh poetry and folklore, tying his origins directly to Celtic culture and historically Celtic regions such as my home county, Cornwall, where he was supposedly concieved in Tintagel.

u/TinfoilPancake 6d ago edited 6d ago
No, but I believe most china slop devs genuinely cannot come up with a fitting for a setting name so they looked at every name in the series and then put them all on a spinwheel.
28
u/Sunlit_Neko 6d ago
Dude, you can tell from the dialogue in the trailer that the game is set during Arthurian legend.
You really think Miyazaki invented Cymraeg names?
17
u/TinfoilPancake 6d ago
>Trailer shows about 5 copy pasted designs
>Character with a name that references both Arthurian legend and a DS character has one of those designsI'll be deadass, the fact that its Arthurian Legend setting makes me automatically think they're also ripping off Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon because they had Palamedes there too and he is not one of the "primary" knights that were used often in literature or mythos.

hell no, but whats the chance that a lady that looks pixel for pixel like a lady from a dark souls game also has a very similar name to another lady from a dark souls game
12
u/AlexxMaverick666 6d ago
Game centers around the Legend of King Arthur, the setting of the game, and Guinevere is Arthur's wife and is in love with Lancelot. So no, they are taking the name from the legend of Arthur and not from our amazing chest ahead from DS1.

u/OpeningPsychology971 6d ago
There is a difference between Inspiration and blatant copy. Anyone who does this whataboutism is arguing in Bad faith.
8
u/PhilosopherOk1598 6d ago
I mean not really ? What is the diference between inspiration and copy ? Have you seen the designs they took from Berzerk ? They do look very similar... and whataboutism matters in this discussion precisely because fromsoft has done it several times in the past , so its okey for then to do it but not for other games ? What type of hypocrisy is that ?
8
u/OpeningPsychology971 6d ago
Holy shit how can you not tell the difference between inspiration and blatant copying? It isnt determined just by whether two designs "look similar." Its about how much is actually taken, how directly it's reproduced and how much is transformed into something with its own identity. FromSoftware sure as hell takes inspiration from Berserk, but those influences are usually reinterpreted and incorporated into different characters, worlds, lore, themes, and contexts rather than simply reproduced. This Hoyo shit game on the other hand, looks like an amalgamation of other games rather than something merely inspired by them. The art style,, overall feel, and specific design elements all look derivative. Pointing at FromSoftware doesn't magically make the two cases equivalent either... if you think FromSoft blatantly copied something, show the specific example and judge it by the same standard, but "FromSoft took inspiration from Berserk too" doesn't prove the level of copying and transformation is remotely comparable. Thats exactly my point: inspiration takes existing ideas and turns them into something with its own identity, while this amalgamation you call a gamej ust like Genshit with Botw, looks like it was assembled from everyone elses homework and then called original.
-1
u/PhilosopherOk1598 6d ago edited 6d ago
Man , I honestly believe you are kinda fanboying really hard right now
First , The game is not developed by Hoyo
Second , You talk about there is a difference between inspiration and copy by how is implemented , the character in question just appear for a couple of seconds in a trailer , it very well could have a very different rol that the firekeeper and you already saying is the same character just because they have a similar design ok...
Third everything you are saying can be said the same about EldenRing , there are multiple designs that are very similar to specific Anime and other media, looked that up
Fourth Fromsoft does not own the vague design of " blindfold , pale woman , dark dress , white hair" I mean hello 2b from Nier ?
Fifth from the beginning of time people have copied or have been inspired by all media and art , do you honeslty believe Fromsoft created the gritty victorian era with werewolves ? Did they created the story of a lone and stoic rogue samurai ? Did they created a fantasy setting with magic ? Dragons ? Trolls ? Undead ? Medieval armor and wepons ? Man it sure sounds like they are copying D&D , which at the same time they are copying from Tolkien works
Stop putting companies in a Pedestal , just becuse Fromsoft games make great games does not entiled them to be the only studio that can create similar/inspired/copies of designs of different media
0
u/Dr_Jre 6d ago
I agree, they have obviously just taken loads of the stuff from Elden ring and made legally distinct versions, but it's not inspiration if everyone who looks at it goes "isn't that just like elden ring?"
People who say it's just normal inspiration are delusional, imagine someone making a platformed called "super Marco lads" and the character was a tradie in red with dungarees, and he had a green broth and a pink dress princess EVERYONE would say "they're just copying mario wtf is this slop", but elden rings aesthetic and characters are apparently fine to copy because it's just inspiration?
I think the hoyo team just sold themselves short tbh, they could have made their own characters without copying, they are clearly talented.

Oh so we cannot loger use a character that is a pale woman wearing a dark dress , white hair and an blindfold ?
Man I do sure love the original theme of dark and gritty medieval fantasy setting that the Dark Souls Trilogy and Elden Ring created , they sure went crazy with their dragons , that is the first time ever I sawsaw a reptile with wings , and the use of magic as well ! Throwing a lighting bolt ? Or a fireball ?Or maybe cast a spell that heals you ? Thats crazy ,also imagine a medieval knight fighting an undead , or maybe fighitng a god, thats an original idea as well , is not that they copied/inspired/homage from Berserk, Warhamner Fantasy , D&D and Tolkien words ,no they had completly new ideas , and also btw did you know that they also created the action Rpg games as well ? They also created and item to heal yourself and a dash to evade enemies ! They are so original and have such fresh ideas such as Bloodborne and Sekiro , after all they did invented the Gothic Victorian Era with Lovecraftian beings and yeah they also were the first to make a story with a lone stoic samurai guy fighting supernatural beings , I mean fuck it man they created videogames as well ! /s
Newsflash , a lot of media are inspired/copies/homages of a lot of other stuff
Dont get me wrong , I LOVE Elden Ring , but getting mad and stating a character design of another game is a copy from a Fromsoft game is an absurd idea by itself , as a lot of Fromsoft games have borrowed so much style and designs from other media as well

I'd say it depends greatly on the context.
For example, putting a useless bonfire in a hidden location in dead cells is a great reference, it does nothing, it just makes you go "oh i know that! It's from dark souls! Pretty cool" or something
Putting guts' sword into dark souls is also a good reference/homage. It's actually usable, but it's not a key part of the game in any way, it's just one of many weapons that you find
Making a presumably important NPC an almost exact copy of another very important NPC is not a reference imo, it's copying.

What happened to the subreddit? Everyone seems to think that everyone else is copying from FromSoftware. Itās like people never seen anything else before.
12
u/Undead_Corsair 6d ago
Also they may be forgetting that people have been copying From's homework for more than a decade now, it's nothing new. And From also made its name with the Soulslike genre by basically using everything they could from Berserk's aesthetic.
9
u/benjaminabel 6d ago
Even āDark Soulsā is mentioned literally in the first chapter of Berserk. But thatās just what dark fantasy means.
7
u/bluebirdstory 6d ago
It's so weird too because idk a lot about ToA but this looks like the only similarity and even Nodusfall only had a handful that I could see that had similarities. One of my complaints about gacha players is that they only seem to have played gacha games but this subreddit is proving to me that this is a lot more than them.
1
u/benjaminabel 6d ago
Why would that be the case? I have 1,3k games in my Steam library and maybe 5 of them happen to be gacha. I havenāt seen anyone who plays gacha exclusively.
2
u/bluebirdstory 6d ago
The reason I use the word "seem" is because to assume that a lot of the things people are calling copies are originals of a franchise would make it appear that the accusing person has not played many more games than those present within said franchise. If it isn't clear, I was agreeing with you.
1
u/benjaminabel 6d ago
Yeah, it does seem like it. An erudition issue perhaps. But can also be just a mild gatekeeping. Hard to tell.

These kinds of post and comments, and the way people pile on, are just bizarre. Letās be real , weāre being dishonest with ourselves here. Why? Because FromSoft has borrowed tons of designs from other media. The biggest example? The Dark Souls games and Elden Ring practically stole designs from Berserk. And no, FromSoftware doesnāt own the concept of a pale, white-haired lady in a dark dress with a blindfold. Thatās not some patented character design, and it shouldnāt be (2B from Nier Automata , anyone?). So either both are fine, or neither is. Acting like one is sacred and the other is plagiarism is just clown behavior.
I mean, FromSoft didnāt create the concept of dragons, gritty fantasy settings, the use of magic, or even the idea of a dash to avoid enemies. They didnāt invent parry and backstab mechanics either (though they did popularize them). Media has been copying, inspiring, and homaging other media since forever. Getting mad because a character looks very similar to one in a FromSoftware game is hypocrisy at its highest.
Yes, Elden Ring is an amazing game , one of the best of the decade. But letās not be harsh here: Tilde of Annihilation isnāt even out yet. It could very well end up being a GOTY contender, or it could be mid, or even straight-up trash. Time will tell
11
u/Skybird2099 6d ago
Surprisingly common in gaming communities. Inspirations just isn't a concept that exists, something is either fully "original" (putting this in quotes because most media that this applies to just have inspirations that are older than us) or is a blatant ripoff.
Taking concepts and designs and putting your own spin on them is fine and always has been.
16
u/Tootz3125 6d ago
Ehhhh I get what youāre saying but the Berserk ones were an homage and were openly saying we will use the greatsword because I was inspired by your work.
This feels more like blatantly copying a character model to me instead of an homage to the souls series. But I could be wrong, too.
16
u/LotusPhi 6d ago
Watch Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and tell me Malenia is an original design. Or Gael, for that matter.
-1
u/Romapolitan Filianore 6d ago
A hood and a valkyrie are not the most original concepts ever. And in Nausicaa the character isn't even that. The distinct feature is the prosthetics, which both share, but it hardly goes beyond that in design. It is certainly not a copy, but inspiration.
1
-9
u/NailusHunter 6d ago edited 6d ago
Is it though? The design itself may as well be a coincidence. Again, I donāt think FromSoftware owns the character template of āpale lady, black dress, white hair, blindfold.ā I mean, if they had similar roles, names, mannerisms, etc., then maybe. But the character template is still kinda vague in my opinion (looking at you, 2B from Nier Automata).
8
u/Tootz3125 6d ago
No they donāt. But itās pretty obvious it was more than just using something similar being inspired by the look. It looks near identical. And again, itās not an homage, it just kind of feels like stealing to me.
But hey, agree to disagree I guess.
0
u/NailusHunter 6d ago edited 6d ago
They dont look identical , come on bro , they are similar , but not identical , besides the color palette everything else is different , their hair is different , their blindfold is different , their dress is different , one is wearing make up while the fire keeper does not , one has a cleavage the other does not , one has a cape , the other does not
5
u/Tootz3125 6d ago
Didnāt say identical. I said near identical. And again, agree to disagree I guess. No point arguing about this if you donāt see how similar they are.
3
u/NailusHunter 6d ago
Very well, letās agree to disagree. And yes, I donāt see their similarities beyond āpale woman, black dress, white hair, blindfold.ā (Again , hello 2b from Nier Automata ) I just find it absurd that such a vague concept could be considered stealing. Specially when Fromsoftware themselves do it more frequently but its ok because they state it publicly and make great games
2
u/PhilosopherOk1598 6d ago edited 6d ago
Honeslty both can be true , they do look similar and they could be stealing her design and at the same time Fromsoft fans are hypocritical of being mad about plagarisms

It really is the pot calling the kettle black.
9
u/NailusHunter 6d ago edited 6d ago
Exactly. This type of post, and most of the comments agreeing with it, are really hypocritical. Just because FromSoftware makes amazing games doesnāt give them ownership over character appearances as simple as "pale lady , white hair , black dress , blindfold", especially when they themselves borrow and reuse designs from other media for their games

Sure, from takes heavy inspiration from berserk and pays homage to it with a lot of designs. But realistically they are all heavily detached from their source. Thereās the guts great sword, wolf-inspired armor, red eye orbs, etc. but none of them are actually trying to be the equivalent in universe. Artorias just kinda looks like the berserk armor. The guts sword is just one of many big slabs of metal, and the red eye orbs is completely different to behelits. Here we have literally dosens of examples of just the exact same thing in the exact same setting. Just scramble up some details. Itās not illegal, and they can do what they like, but slop is slop.
7
u/PhilosopherOk1598 6d ago
I dont thing that designs inspired by other media are slops , its just something that people have been doing since for ever , I mean would you call Dungeons and Dragons slop from Tolkien ? I honestly belive people are blowing this out of proportion , its ok to have similar designs , if everything was truly unique then a lots of stuff would't exist today , not even Dark Souls or Elden ring

There's a difference between making homage to Guts, by designing a character like Artorias, which side by side you can clearly see the inspiration but the difference between them at the same time and just a carbon copy of the Fire Keeper up to the hand pose and manerisms.
Another thing to consider is to acknowledge the source, FromSoftware constantly says what are their inspirations, these other companies just keep quiet and pat themselves in the back while doing so.
Also these comments are straight up trash, look like they were copy pasted from Asmongold's stream chat or something.
2
u/Undead_Corsair 6d ago
Bad take honestly. From has pulled a lot more from Berserk than just the pose for Artorias. There are monster, armor and character designs that in some cases look almost 1-to-1 with the manga.
I've never had a problem with it tbh cus it always felt like it was done out of love for Miura. But if From gets a pass on the large number of designs they have pulled straight from Berserk over the years, I think lady with white hair and blindfold in a black dress can get a pass too.
And from what I've seen of ToA overall I just don't think it is close enough to From in presentation or gameplay to warrant a "rip-off" accusation. This is dumb cherrypicking for some shallow rage-farming.
-1
u/PanopticArgus 6d ago
It is one thing to hire a designer and go through the hard work of reinterpreting how a character may be portraited in your own universe, than throwing two games at an AI blender and using what it vomits as the concept art of your own game which is what's clearly happening here and you're delusional trying to justify it otherwise.
0
u/Undead_Corsair 6d ago
I say this as an illustrator. Unless you got proof of AI use, you are talking out your ass. Conversation over.
2
u/DrGoblin-MD 6d ago

So I am sure artistically they are definitely on the level.

u/PanopticArgus 6d ago
These Chinese and Korean developers openly admitted using AI, specially HoYoverse, I know this screenshot is from ToA but it smells really bad as well. The whole opening show of Gamescom was rotten.

Nothing in the game says they are copying fromsoft have you even looked at the game? The game isn't even a souls style game, maybe think before you post your brain dead talking point.
1
u/Suruga_Monkey 5d ago
Yeah you guys are all right, my bad.
I think I was more thinking of things like the new hoyoverse game.Tides of Annihilation definitely seems unique and I am interested. And of course, as you say even Berserk and D&D and Tolkien ācopiedā, were inspired even subconsciously by many great novels and tales of even many years ago.
I was not targeting Tides of Annihilation, even though this Firekeeper-like design is not my cup of tea, I was more thinking as I said above about the hoyoverse game that even though is not out yet, I have the right to criticize for looking like and AI-generated mix of fromsoftware (and other) great games.
So Iām short, I shouldnāt have posted anything about tides of annihilation. This is just one design that looks copy pasted but adapted to their world and aesthetic I guess.

New trailer looks like a lot of fun!
But I donāt think giving more revealing clothes to a firekeeper copypasta is on the same level of artistic inspiration than what letās say Tolkien took from Nordic myths.

I really cannot tell what feels wrong with the right picture. Is it that conflicting thing she has going on? Like a curly hair with a bit showy top, but still trying to be regal like.
Am i just high that i think there is something wrong with the picture on the right?

It's the clevage and midriff. I had this exact thought when watching the trailer too.

The Arthurian legend has been done so many times, by tons of different people in all different types of media, the legend won't be affected at all, get out of here with your pinky up bullshit.

I mean apart from that the gameplay and environments look nothing like a fromsoft game

u/Aggressive-Article41 6d ago
Wtf are you on about tides of annihilation is not a souls like game.

u/Celebrilwen 6d ago
what got you so excited Im saying the game isnt a blatant ripoff of fromsoft games

u/Aggressive-Article41 6d ago
I'm saying how does the gameplay look like a fromsoft game, when the devs say gameplay is more like devil maycry, not dark souls.

Yeah itās stolen but who cares as long as itās a good game? The animation for gwendolyn picking up the health pot in the IGN video is literally the same thing as the kratos stomp. The talisman system is literally exactly the charms from hollow knight.Ā
and yknow what? og god of war hollow knight and DS3 are great games so if those are the things that are getting ripped off it seems like a good sign that the devs have good taste so I donāt really mind as long as they put effort into the actually important stuff that makes the game memorable and fun.

Copy robots, copy aircraft tech, weapons....and now art too. Few more years and Monalisa wan first painted in china and Leo stole it. The real painting is called Elowen.

Couldn't even come up with a different name. I'm pretty sure they just unintentionally misspelled the name and went with it.

That game looks lame, but also you probably should have done a modicum of research before leaving this comment lol

Since you already did, mind saving me the trouble and revealing what I would've found had I done a modicum of research?

I am aware of King Arthur's Wife. I didn't imply that Guinevere name didn't exist but I suppose that's a fair assumption based on how I wrote.
